Deadwood Fund Grants Awarded

State Historical Society awards seven Deadwood Fund grants

PIERRE, S.D. - Historic preservation projects in Burke, Miller, Pierre, Tabor, Mitchell, Yankton, and Aberdeen recently received matching grants from the South Dakota State Historical Society.

“This historic preservation grants program is designed to encourage restoration or rehabilitation of historic properties and is one more way we can promote and protect our history and culture,” said Ted M. Spencer, State Historic Preservation Offi cer. “In 2021 we awarded a total of $151,050 among 11 projects which had matching funds of $434,548. The resulting total publicprivate investment was $585,598.”

The grants are awarded through the State Historical Society’s Deadwood Fund grant program. Funding for the program is from Deadwood gaming revenue earmarked by state law for historic preservation projects throughout the state. The program is administered by the society’s State Historic Preservation Offi ce at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre.

The following projects were the most recent to receive grants to supplement their work: • Burke (Gregory County): Gregory County

Courthouse, c. 1934; received $20,000 to assist in repointing and masonry repairs • Miller (Hand County): Hand County Courthouse, c. 1926; received $10,000 to assist with repair of ornate plaster • Pierre (Hughes County): Pierre First United

Methodist Church, c. 1910; received $10,000 to assist in stained-glass window repairs • Tabor (Bon Homme County): Tabor Log School

Building, c. 1872; received $5,000 to assist in general log cabin repairs • Mitchell (Davison County): Western National Bank

Building, c. 1906-1907; received $15,000 to assist in window repairs • Yankton (Yankton County): Yankton Post Offi ce

Building, c. 1904-1905; received $20,000 to assist with repointing and masonry repairs • Aberdeen (Brown County): Citizens Bank Building, c. 1910; received $15,000 to assist with repointing the exterior of the building

These new recipients represent a total award amount of $95,000 with matching funds of $334,851, resulting in a total public-private investment of $429,851. These fi gures are refl ected in the total 2021 statistics above.

Deadwood Fund grants are awarded twice a year with grant application deadlines of Feb. 1 and Oct. 1. They are reviewed at the spring and winter meetings of the State Historical Society’s board of trustees.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation is asking for your feedback on our Public Involvement Plan (PIP). The PIP is a critical guidance document to ensure SDDOT meaningfully engages with the public and stakeholders on transportation projects throughout South Dakota.

The PIP frames how SDDOT involves and informs your community, agencies, and the public about the department's transportation planning, project development and construction, environmental impacts, key issues, and actions. It outlines the steps and processes SDDOT will follow and tools by which to engage. This plan will shape and enable future public involvement and community engagement eff orts, and the transportation system across South Dakota.
