Lots of excitement was amidst at the Maritime Museum this spring! We partnered with The San Diego Museum of Art for this year’s Art Alive Petal Pop-Ups! SDMA implements the Petal Pop-Ups at surprise locations throughout town each year for four consecutive weekends, designed
as a way to bring joy to the community and promote Art Alive, The San Diego Museum of Art’s signature fundraiser and floral event. For the final Petal Pop-Up installation this year, SDMA chose the Maritime Museum of San Diego and adorned the ticket booth, and Star of India, with exquisite floral designs. According to Erika Ulring, SDMA Associate Director of Marketing and Communications, “It is such an honor this year to partner with another of San Diego’s important nonprofit cultural institutions and iconic landmarks.” The three other Petal Pop-Up locations included Little Italy, March 22-24; Old Town San Diego, March 29-31; and La Mesa Village, April 5-7.
Art Alive Petal Pop-Ups are large-scale floral installations created by SDMA’s floral
partner Native Poppy with flowers generously donated by Cali Wholesale Flowers at sites coordinated with four different community partner locations around San Diego County. Each location is a secret until launched live on The San Diego Museum of Art’s social media channels. The Maritime Museum collaborated with SDMA on the social media campaign, resulting in the highest online engagement and earned media ever delivered since the program began three years ago. Flower installations began early Friday, April 12 prior to the Museum opening. Throughout the weekend, the combined SDMA, MMSD and social media influencer buzz on social media, especially Instagram and Facebook, culminated Sunday, April 14 with mainstream broadcast news coverage and a 50% spike in general admission.
The Art Alive event held at The San Diego Museum of Art Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28 paired florals and art throughout the Museum. This year, Art Alive celebrated the art of India and featured a special installation from the Museum’s renowned Edwin Binney 3rd Collection of South Asian paintings as well a largescale floral creation in the two-story Museum rotunda
from Meghaa Modi, India’s premier concept and event designer, SDMA’s first international rotunda designer. SDMA also hosted a late-night Bloom Bash party that kicked-off Art Alive weekend. The 21+ event held Friday, April 28 featured all the fun and florals of Art Alive, plus live entertainment, contemporary art installations, food from more than 30 of San Diego’s top fine dining eateries, and the return of the Ferris wheel on the Balboa Park Plaza de Panama.
“Take
The Maritime Museum of San Diego is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a significant grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in support of the project “Take Me to the Water: Histories of the Black Pacific.” This grant will fund an interactive temporary exhibition that will explore the maritime practices of the Af -
rican diaspora in the Pacific region and fund a youth sailing training program with the aim of getting BPOC students out on the water.
We are truly grateful to the NEH for their generous support of this important project, which aims to illuminate and celebrate the often-overlooked histories of the Black Pacific community.
As of April 19, 2024, our Docent program is proud to announce that 11 of the 2024 Docent Trainees have completed training and earned their red badge. This is the largest group of graduates we have had in several years. We have a handful of
trainees still working on completion and expect them to be ready to go by summer. A job very well done by our Docent board and training committee.
We celebrated their success with a “Docent Graduation Sail” aboard San Salvador on May 21st.
Maritime Museum of San Diego, home to one of the world’s largest collections of historic vessels, fascinating exhibits, and on-the-water adventure guest experiences, will host the 5th Annual Oceanography Merit Badge Days Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. June 15, July 27 and August 10, 2024. Scouts BSA youth may enroll to earn their Oceanography Merit Badge through participation in one of three Saturday classes at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Scouts must complete one class to earn their Oceanography Merit Badge so participants can choose the date that works for them.
The program gives local scouting youth the opportunity to more deeply explore the ocean that is so integral to the San Diego community. By combining field work, laboratory observation, and scholarly discussion, Oceanography Merit Badge Days at the Maritime Museum of San Diego allow scouts to become fully immersed in the multiple branches of oceanographic research.
An OMB Days scouting parent participant shared their enthusiasm for the program stating, “Several of our troop scouts thoroughly enjoyed working on the Oceanography MB at the Maritime Museum. You could not ask for a better venue that allowed the kids to be out of a typical classroom environment. Scouts sure did enjoy hands-on experiences, exploring the museum and engaging with the great counselors!”
For 25 years, the Maritime Museum of San Diego has hosted highly popular and award-winning year-round educational events for hundreds of educators looking for exceptional, educational, and experiential programming for youth programs and students.
Tickets are $54.00 per participating scout and $24.00 per accompanying adult and includes general admission to explore the Maritime Museum of San Diego after class. Each scout or group of scouts are required to be accompanied by a parent or adult chaperone. All Scouts BSA Youth Protection guidelines must be followed at any event with registered Scouts present. Reservations must be done online in advance at sdmaritime.org. Space is limited and enrollment is based on a first come, first served basis. Participants with any questions may call 619.234.9153 x 124 or email peterd@sdmaritime.org.
