LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,

I think we all welcomed 2021 with hope that COVID-19 and the year of the pandemic were distant friends far behind us. In all the traditional ways, it was a fresh new year with all the hopes, dreams, resolutions, and anticipation each new year brings. In many practical ways, COVID-19 continued to be our constant companion.

Just like you and your families, the Hospice of the Chesapeake team had to find creative ways in 2021 to continue to be hopeful for a new year but to keep practical matters close at hand. The duality of 2021 launched a new way of “being.” We stopped saying “when we get back to normal” and adopted the philosophy of “working forward” in our new reality.

I believe two years of living within a pandemic, in every phase and back again, has made us a stronger organization and one that stays focused on the “why.” I’ve often said the how of providing care might have changed in the last two years but the why of providing quality hospice and supportive care continues to be our driving force. What is the why you might ask? Well, simply put caring, for those in our communities living with illness and loss is at the core of our organization and will continue too truly be our “why.” We believe fundamentally changing how families experience advanced illness and loss will benefit generations in a profoundly universal way.

You will read on the following pages how we expanded our reach and met our goals for the citizens of Charles County and how we believe fundraising has been universally changed as well.

Thank you for helping us to build our legacy, your legacy, and the legacy of your hometown hospice. I’ve said it many times and I will stand firm in my belief that we are stronger together than apart.

Thank you for sharing in our mission of caring for life throughout the journey with illness and loss.

Following the 2020 acquisition of Hospice of Charles County, our primary focus was expanding care for the community.

We had four primary goals including:

increasing and streamlining access to hospice care

fully utilizing the Inpatient Care Center launching supportive care solidifying and furthering external partnerships with healthcare partners and community businesses and local donors.

Investments in Our Future

It was clear that significant investments would need to be made to allow our team to achieve our four primary goals. We implemented plans to achieve them, including:

Our Hospice Team - Stabilizing and increasing the availability of team members in Charles County was critical to our success.

Physical Spaces –

Refurbished and revitalized the Inpatient Care Center. With the support of Delegate Edith Patterson we received a $200,000 bond from the State of Maryland. This investment delivered new floors and fresh paint, refreshed patients’ suites with new state-of-the-art beds, smart TVs and comfortable chairs that convert to sleepers.

Jump to December 2021 and we believe we have achieved those goals and then some:

496 hospice patients cared for in 2021 versus 451 in 2020 representing close to a 10% increase in those cared for.

40 hospice patients care for in the Inpatient Care Center.

Launched supportive care program and opened the Hussman Supportive Care Center in the Waldorf location.

Opened a new education and training center that would allow our team members to learn new skills through a hands-on learning environment.

Expanded our space for grief support groups and counseling sessions.

Opened the Hussman Supportive Care Center with generous donations from John and Terri Hussman. We launched this new level of care that was previously not available.

Updated the IT infrastructure throughout our Waldorf location and deployed new technology to the hospice team.

$463,774 raised from 626 donors versus $165,762 in 2020 allowing growth in programs and services not covered by Medicare and private insurance.

Partnerships That Have Lasting Impact

Our strategy also included building/rebuilding our partnerships with our community healthcare partners and local businesses to align with our common goals.

Partnering with the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center to create a seamless transition process for hospitalized patients who have chosen to move to hospice care at home and those who choose the Inpatient Care Center in Waldorf.

Solidifying our partnership with Waldorf Toyota to further support our We Honor Veterans program.

Each of these leaders in their respective industries have been critical to our success and to expanding our mission of caring for life throughout the journey with illness and loss. We are incredibly grateful.
