WINTER 2015

DAVID OLSON Chairman

Two years ago we expanded our mission to become an agent for change in South Dakota. The intervening years have been used to lay the groundwork for an exciting future for the Hall. It is a future you can be proud of.

This year we will unveil two new programs and a partnership with SDPB. They are: LEGACY OF ACHIEVEMENT. Soon all inductees or their descendants will be able to access our new network to tell their full up-to-date story. It is my hope they will use this opportunity to tell readers not only what has been accomplished but why and how. It will be a great resource for others to understand excellence. ACTS OF EXCELLENCE. Using our new network we will accept submissions from all South Dakotans telling stories of excellence. Acts will encourage and inspire excellence.

“ ...This year we will unveil two new programs and a partnership with SDPB.”

Expand Legacy of Achievement through videos, photos and documents telling stories of excellence

PUBLIC TELEVISION. Inductees will be interviewed and their stories shown on public television. We understand the power of television and will use this program as our initial foray into this medium.

Launch Acts of Excellence for statewide recognition

A SPECIAL THANK YOU to our staff, Greta and Keileen, as they work hard to further our cause. A special thanks is also due Board Vice Chair and Hall inductee Dick Gowen for his work in developing our new Champions for Excellence Network. And as always, a special thank you is due to our supporters. We cannot succeed without your help.

2015 Annual Donor Campaign No Debt, Increased Donors and New Programming Thank you to the generous donors for another successful annual campaign in 2014. Funding for the South Dakota Hall of Fame is provided through private donations used for the mission of Championing a Culture of Excellence in South Dakota.

C HUCK T RIMBLE 2013 Inductee “I am proud to be in the South Dakota Hall of Fame and know that many in my tribe ‐‐ the Oglala Sioux ‐‐ are proud as well. But it is also humbling to be counted among so many great leaders, many of them Lakota as well. I am pleased to be able to contribute financially to support this great cause.”

G ARY C ONRADI 2013 Inductee I support and contribute to the South Dakota Hall Of Fame as it is “the” organiza on that showcases the posi ve accomplishments of South Dakotans.

Our annual budget is $375,000 which supports five programs. Two are new and are launching this year—Acts of Excellence and Legacy of Achievements. We continue the annual Honors Ceremony, education program Legends & Learning and our Chamberlain museum with its exhibits and events.

The annual Honors Ceremony, now in its 38th year, is an opportunity to recognize those individuals who have overcome trials and tribulations to build outstanding lives. They begin to share their journey when elected into the Hall. Stories of our inductees are currently limited to a 250-word story which ends on the day of their induction. Our new program, Legacy of Achievements, allows our inductees or their descendants to expand that story. Why is this important? None of our inductees are particularly interested in boasting. It is part of our culture to be modest about accomplishments. But we learn through stories. We learn from example. When our inductees tell of triumphs and failure others can gain insights that may help them in their pursuit of excellence.

We induct up to ten individuals each year into the Hall of Fame. But we all know of others who have demonstrated excellence every day in every way here in South Dakota. We believe that they should be recognized. Acts of Excellence is a digital platform for that recognition. Both individuals and organizations are invited to submit Acts of Excellence. Those Acts will be publicized and permanently archived to recognize and give thanks. Acts of Excellence will encourage and inspire South Dakotans to pursue excellence.

New Exhibits for Museum Your donations also support The South Dakota Hall of Fame Museum, located directly off Interstate 90 in Chamberlain. The SD Hall of Fame began as the Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. In 1983, the organization broadened recognition of champions across all vocations. The SD Hall of Fame was designated as the state’s official Hall of Fame by the SD Legislature in 1995. Today the museum, opened in 2000, maintains exhibits using digital technology and traditional exhibits to tell the stories of over 600 inductees achievements, engaging visitors of all ages. In addition, new exhibits are planned to tell the stories of champions in a particular field such as agriculture, health, education and business.

Inductee Achievement Updates Businessman Larry Ness (2012) of First National Bank and Onward Yankton have challenged the community to come up with a “Big Idea” to aid in economic development and retain Yankton’s young people. Ness announced that the top prize would be $10,000 for an idea that could “start the process of creating our own future,” according to an article in the Yankton Daily Press.

Dale Lamphere (1987) was chosen to create a tribute in sculpture to Sturgis businessman, artist and philanthropist Tom Monahan. Situated at 2nd and Main in Sturgis, the marble and stainless steel sculpture is reminiscent of a motorcycle, an appropriate symbol to honor the man who designed and donated the world-famous Sturgis Rally logo. Artist Ron Backer (1996) has been commissioned to paint historical interpretations of Palm Desert, California, where he now lives with wife, Elle Marty. Known for his historical paintings, his work has been shown throughout South Dakota. Some of his better-known work includes a series on Lewis & Clark and several featuring historical scenes and people from his hometown of Sioux Falls. Former South Dakota governor Frank Farrar (2006) will participate in the April 25 I’m Ready For Summer Triathlon in Brookings. Farrar, who turns 86 on April 2, continues to fly his plane and work in his banking/credit card firm, as well as participating in eight to ten triathlons a year.

Rodeo legend Casey Tibbs (1978) will be the subject of a new documentary, Floating Horses, by a Denver filmmaker. Daktronics, co-founded by Al Kurtenbach (1992), was featured CBS News Sunday morning on Superbowl Sunday. CBS took an interest after a story about Daktronics’ founders appeared in the New York Times. From their humble beginnings in one room, the company now has video boards featured at major events throughout the world, including the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid and the University of Phoenix Stadium which hosted the 2015 Superbowl.

Turning 100 on January 31, 2015, physician Brooks Ranney (2000) delivered over 7,000 babies in an active practice stretching over 50 years. He was also an Army battalion surgeon in combat in Europe during World War II, was elected to Yankton’s City Commission and served as Mayor, and served as president of the American College of For more news about Obstetricians and Gynecologists. In speaking with the our Inductees and other Yankton Daily Press, Dr. Ranney said, “You can either go news from the South through life just getting along, or you can try to Dakota Hall of Fame, accomplish as much as you can. I felt it was a waste of please visit our Facebook page. life to do anything less than the latter.”

Al Kurtenbach We are pleased to announced that our digital platform for Legacy of Achievements is now being used by many of our Inductees to continue to share their ongoing stories of excellence. Each inductee can add text, photos and media to expand their initial biography and official photo.
