We had a fantastic time at the 2020 Honors Ceremony weekend, held September 10 and 11, 2021. The event was marked by so many memorable moments we won’t soon forget. The weekend began with a reception at the South Dakota Hall of Fame Visitor & Education Center. Attendees had the opportunity to view exhibits, see the Class of 2020’s Inductee panels in their home in the Inductee rotunda, enjoy food and drink, and meet with the Inductees from the Class of 2020. Saturday morning commenced with the Anniversary Reunion and Governor’s Brunch. The brunch included comments from the Governor and was the setting for the Anniversary Reunion of the South Dakota Hall of Fame classes: 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015. You can view the Anniversary Reunion booklet on our website, to learn more about the many Dream Chasers that make up these classes. This banquet is a special way for past Inductees, family members, and friends to experience the way their loved one’s legacies are still being remembered and honored, even 40 years later. OSCAR HOWE

RICHARD ADEE

AWARD-WINNING NATIVE AMERICAN ARTIST

CO-FOUNDER OF THE LARGEST BEEKEEPING OPERATION

Revolutionary, passionate, and talented are words that describe this South Dakota artist. Oscar Howe was born into poverty on the Crow Creek Reservation on May 13, 1915. He was a Yanktonai Nakota Sioux, and his Native American name was Mazuha Hokshina, which means “Trader Boy.” As a child, he was very interested in lines. He would draw with charcoal from a wood stove. His grandmother, Shell Face, taught him the art of painting on buffalo hides. Just out of college, he was becoming famous for his paintings and was selected to paint the dome in the Carnegie Library in Mitchell and several large murals in an auditorium in Mobridge. Oscar was a professor and artist-in-residence at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion for 25 years. During his career, he received many honors and awards, including Artist Laureate of South Dakota and the South Dakota’s Governor’s Award for Creative Achievement.

In 1957 Richard Adee and his brother, Stanley purchased their first commercial honey bee operation in Bruce, South Dakota. They operated 1,600 bee colonies for honey production. As the company grew, they expanded from honey production to paid pollination as well. Adee’s beekeeping still follows a migratory pattern. Each summer the bees are in South Dakota and the Midwest for honey production. After the honey is harvested in the fall, the bees are moved to California for the almond pollination season. When that is completed, some of the honeybees are sent north to Washington State to pollinate apples, and the rest go to Texas and Mississippi to rebuild and re-queen over the spring months. Then they are returned home to the Midwest to begin the cycle again. Today Adee Honey Farms is the largest commercial beekeeping operation in the country, with more than 80,000 bee colonies and nearly one-hundred employees.
