2023-2024 Annual Report

Page 1

A BRIEF LETTER WELCOME

On behalf of the Nashville Sports Council, we are excited to celebrate over 30 years of making a difference through sports tourism. Over the past three decades, we have hosted major events that have become central to Nashville’s expanding sports calendar, including the TransPerfect Music City Bowl, the St. Jude Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series, and the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament.

In addition, the Sports Council has played a key role in supporting high-profile events such as the 2019 NFL Draft, the 2016 NHL All-Star Game, the 2014 NCAA Women’s Final Four, and the 2022 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Through our dedication to volunteerism and community involvement, these events have generated over $1 billion in direct economic impact since our founding in 1992.

The success of these events, as highlighted in this annual report, would not have been possible without the invaluable support of our individual and corporate members, as well as the countless volunteers who have made a profound impact on Nashville’s sports tourism industry.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to advancing sports tourism in Nashville for many years to come.

Sincerely,

WHAT

THIS YEAR

EVENTS AND INITIATIVES

This year has been nothing short of remarkable for the NSC, and we owe it all to the incredible teamwork and dedication of our members, volunteers, and staff. From hosting large-scale sporting events to driving impactful community outreach programs, every initiative we’ve undertaken has been fueled by your unwavering commitment and support.

Our volunteers played an essential role, ensuring that each event was executed seamlessly, often working behind the scenes to handle countless details and make sure everything ran smoothly. Our members have been the backbone of our success, providing the critical resources and support necessary to help advance our mission. And, of course, our dedicated staff worked tirelessly to bring all of these efforts together, from planning and organizing to executing and overseeing every aspect of our events and initiatives.

We are incredibly grateful to each and every one of you. Your hard work, passion, and commitment have been the driving force behind the NSC’s success resulting in record-breaking numbers and impact on Nashville this year. Together, you have created unforgettable experiences for our community and helped strengthen the foundation of our organization for the future. Thank you for being a vital part of our team— we couldn’t have done it without you!

Each year, local youth football leagues receive thousands of dollars in donations for equipment, uniforms, facility maintenance, game officials, and new programs.

In addition to financial support, leagues are given an official bowl helmet sticker, free tickets for coaches and players from championship teams, and mouthguards donated by Delta Dental of Tennessee. Together, the Bowl and Delta Dental of Tennessee have distributed over 150,000 mouthguards statewide.

CORE EVENTS

2023-2024

BIG MACHINE MUSIC CITY GRAND PRIX

Since 2021, the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix has brought the excitement of IndyCar Racing to downtown Nashville. Each year, the event offers both locals and visitors a weekend of concerts, activities, and thrilling racing action.

TRANSPERFECT MUSIC CITY BOWL

Founded in 1998, the Music City Bowl has transformed what was once one of the slowest tourism weekends into one of the busiest. Over the past 25+ years, the Bowl has generated more than $400 million in direct economic impact.

Did you know that over the past 30 years, Nashville has hosted over 200 events including but not limited to:

SEC MEN’S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Since its debut in Nashville in 1984, the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament has established a lasting presence in Music City. The annual event generates a direct economic impact of more than $20 million.

For more than two decades, the St. Jude Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series has attracted tens of thousands of runners to Nashville’s streets each year. In classic Nashville style, bands line every mile marker to cheer on the runners, with a concert capping off the event.

SEC Football Media Days was hosted at the Grand Hyatt in Nashville July 17-20, 2023. The head coach and three players from each of the fourteen SEC universities attended this event. The Nashville Sports Council oversaw security for the head coaches and players.

Auburn University Head Coach, Hugh Freeze spoke on the team’s plan for the season at the 2024 SEC Media Days.

The Big Machine Music City Grand Prix made its return to Nashville in August 2023, drawing tens of thousands of fans for a weekend of festivities leading up to the Sunday IndyCar Series race. Attendees had the chance to learn from motorsports industry leaders, participate in fan events downtown, and finally witness cars speeding through the streets of Nashville at over 200 mph. Ahead of the race, the Nashville Sports Council managed FanFest and the Pit Stop Challenge on Broadway, allowing fans to get an up-close view at the top IndyCar drivers, vendors and other fun activations. In addition to day-of activities, the Nashville Sports Council oversaw the recruitment and management of approximately 400 volunteers to serve in roles such as Hospitality, Access Control, and Zone Captains. Volunteers ensured that all fans were having a positive and fun experience at the 2023 Big Machine Music City Grand Prix and we are grateful for all the time they dedicated to making this event a success!

Direct Economic Impact: $45 Million*

Viewership: 1.1 Million

*Data is an estimate based on previous year’s economic impact provided by Big Machine Music City Grand Prix

Volunteers at the 2023 Big Machine Music City Grand Prix enhanced the overall experience through multiple avenues such as access control, way finding and more.

The Tennessee Volunteers squared off against the Virginia Cavaliers in Nissan Stadium on September 2, 2023. This was the first meeting between these two teams since the 1991 Sugar Bowl, in which Tennessee beat Virginia 23-22. Tennessee beat Virginia 49-13 in front of a crowd of 69,507; the largest college football game ever hosted in Nissan Stadium. The NSC assisted with game, team, and ticket operations for this event.

Direct Economic Impact: $20.3 Million

Viewership: 2.5 Million

University of Tennessee and University of Virginia football programs played a neutral site game at Nissan Stadium where fans and locals alike came to cheer on the Vols and Cavaliers.

The 2023 TransPerfect Music City Bowl at Nissan Stadium celebrated 26 years December 30 premiering on ABC with a strong matchup of Maryland vs. Auburn; only the 4th ever time competing against one another. Despite a short-handed offense, Maryland came out strong against Auburn in their first matchup since 1983. The Terrapins quickly took control, scoring 21 points in the first quarter and cruising to a 31-13 victory before a crowd of over 50,000.

Maryland found the end zone on its first 3 drives, racking up 226 yards in the opening quarter. With quarterback Billy Edwards stepping in for Taulia Tagovailoa, he led the charge with a touchdown run and a touchdown pass to Preston Howard. Cameron Edge, usually the Terps’ No. 3 quarterback, also contributed with a touchdown pass to Dylan Wade.

Auburn’s offense struggled throughout the game as starting quarterback Payton Thorne completed just 13 of 27 passes for 84 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. The game was sealed when Maryland’s Glendon Miller returned a 44-yard pick-six in the third quarter, extinguishing any hope of an Auburn comeback.

Direct Economic Impact: $24 Million

Viewership: 2.6 Million

The SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament returned to Nashville this year, where it will remain until at least 2035. Held at Bridgestone Arena from March 13-17, the tournament drew in a total of 112,360 fans from across the Southeast. The four-day event concluded with Auburn securing an 86-67 victory over Florida. The Nashville Sports Council aided in the success by securing volunteers, hospitality, and assisting in tournament operations.

Direct Economic Impact: $24.5 Million

Viewership: 6.46 Million

Volunteer, Zach Crutcher, cleans the playing surface at the 2024 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament in Bridgestone Arena. Zach’s stellar work ethic and genersity of his time earned him the 2024 Felicia Carol Wilt Student Volunteer Scholarship alongside Carrie Pittman.

The St. Jude Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series Nashville made a strong return this past April, with over 24,000 registered runners participating in various distances, including the One Mile, 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, Marathon, a Doggie Dash, and a KiDS ROCK event. The marathon showcased all that Music City has to offer, with multiple stages along the course featuring live entertainment. The route began at 8th Ave. and Broadway, leading runners through the heart of Nashville and past iconic landmarks such as Lower Broadway, Music Row, the Gulch, and ending at Nissan Stadium. The Nashville Sports Council recruited 2,000 volunteers to make this event a success!

Direct Economic Impact: $56.2 Million Volunteer, Payton Elrod, passes out bananas to runners at the finish line at the 2024 St. Jude Rock’n’Roll Running Series: Nashville held throughout the streets of Downtown Nashville and surrounding areas.

The Nashville Sports Council’s Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser made its return to Gaylord Springs Golf Links this May. Thirty teams, comprised of 120 players, competed for prizes and took part in a silent auction featuring sports memorabilia and unique experiences. The event raised funds to support the Sports Council’s mission of bidding on and bringing major sporting events to the Greater Nashville Area, aiming to generate a positive economic impact and enhance the quality of life.

The Nashville Sports Council’s Women in Sports Initiative was established to increase awareness, engagement, and promotion of women in sports through events and community involvement. This initiative consistently promotes women’s athletics through social media, dedicated events, and content series.

This year, in partnership with PNC Bank, the Sports Council continued its HBCU Through Her Eyes content series highlighting local HBCU athletics trailblazers; Katrina Chambers of Tennessee State University and Corrinne Tarver of Fisk University. Additionally, the 5th Annual Nashville Tip-Off Breakfast showcased local women’s basketball coaches and players in a preseason panel previewing the upcoming season. To further this same mission, the Sports Council co-hosted a panel to celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day with Vanderbilt Athletics. The panel had the opportunity to share their stories and provide a greater impact on the next generation of women in the sports industry.

RICK REGEN VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

ANDREW STEWART

In the bustling city of Nashville, where sports and music dance together in harmony, there is a man named Andrew whose heart beats for both. Retired in 2018 after a bicycle accident that could have dimmed his spirit, Andrew found himself with time on his hands and a desire to give back. Little did he know that this path would lead him to become the Rick Regen Volunteer of the Year.

Andrew’s journey with the Nashville Sports Council began in 2020, a year that the world will not soon forget. He eagerly signed up to volunteer at the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament, only to watch as the event was swept away by the pandemic’s tide. But this setback didn’t deter him; it only fueled his passion. In 2021, Andrew found himself at The Golf Club of Tennessee, participating in the NCAA Men’s Golf Regional. It was his first real taste of volunteering with the NSC, and he was hooked.

The Big Machine Music City Grand Prix soon became his favorite event to volunteer for. The energy, the thrill of the race, and the camaraderie among volunteers and fans alike made it an experience unlike any other. Andrew’s most cherished memories include helping a mother and her son in a wheel -

chair navigate the crowded track to find parking downtown, a task made possible with the help of another dedicated volunteer whose name escapes him but whose kindness is not forgotten. Beyond these moments, what Andrew treasures most are the connections he’s made—the amazing people he’s met, both in the stands and behind the scenes, and the NSC staff who have become like family.

When he’s not volunteering, Andrew can be found cheering on his beloved Tennessee Volunteers, with a soft spot for all the local teams, even Vanderbilt on occasion. Andrew’s story is one of resilience, community, and an unwavering love for the sports that bring people together. Through his dedication and kindness, he has not only made a difference in the lives of others but has also found a renewed sense of purpose in his own.

The volunteer of the year award is named after Sports Council founding board member Rick Regen, who for nearly four decades had a major impact in sports in Nashville. He was also a pivotal figure in bringing the Tennessee Titans, then Oilers, to town. Additionally, Regen was a leader in the support of the expansion bid for the NHL to award Nashville a franchise in what would become the Nashville Predators.

Andrew Stewart can be seen wristbanding patrons to acess the Hospitality Area at the 2024 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament. Volunteers like Andrew help the NSC staff ensure the best overall experinece for SEC Fans during the tournament.
