Point Loma Pointers win Pee Wee national championship

A group of young boys traveled across the United States and returned with a holiday gift to share with the entire Peninsula community in what is one of the feel-good stories of the year.

The Point Loma Pointers, a Pop Warner football Jr. Pee Wee Division II team, walked down a jetway at Lindbergh Field late last Saturday night

holding a Super Bowl trophy that proved them the best in the United States as a large contingent of parents, relatives, siblings and friends cheered and carried congratulatory signs.

They won the trophy with a 2413 victory over a team from Dallas.

This achievement is made more remarkable in San Diego, which was named by a national publication as the most frustrated sports city in

North America based on the absence of a single championship won by our beloved major league losers, the Padres and Chargers.

For the 29 boys and their coaches, their Super Bowl trip and triumph concluded a perfect season, winning all 13 of their regular season and playoff games before going undefeated in three games at the Pop Warner Super Bowl tournament in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Their odds-defying season was without serious challenge by opponents, even during the first two Super Bowl matches, held the last 20 years at the ESPN Wide World of Sports, a large complex of fields located on the grounds of Walt Disney World.

That was until the Pointers' final championship game last Friday when they faced off against the scrappy SEE POINTERS, Page 15

Culminating a community-inspired petition drive months ago favoring a boutique grocery over a chain drugstore, Jensen's Finest Foods debuted in JENSEN’S Point Loma on Dec. 9 with a Where: 955 brief ceremony before doors Catalina Blvd. swung open at 9 a.m.

Catalina Blvd. The lease for the former Point Loma Fresh & Easy was sold to CVS Pharmacy through a bankruptcy court in Delaware.

But that sale prompted a public outcry – and a successful petition drive at change.org – launched by Peninsulans to protect an existing mom-and-pop, Point Loma Cabrillo Drug, in the same shopping center.

Jensen's Finest Foods original market was opened in Blue Jay, near Lake Arrowhead, in 1940 by Einer and Marie Jensen.

Keepers’ kids recall Christmas at Lighthouse

Today, Santa is hard-pressed to find a suitable lofty entry at the lighthouse dwellings on Point Loma.

Fireplaces that once warmed every room have been removed. But in the glory days of government-appointed keepers, chimneys a-plenty rose through the rooftops.

Kids living at Point Loma Light Station in the 1930s and ’40s didn’t realize, at the time, that they were special. Some 60 years later we’d find them and paste their narratives in the annals of lighthouse history.

Though the keepers themselves have long since passed, the rich Christmas memories of their adult children survive.

“It was wonderful growing up at the lighthouse,” recalled Florida resident Lexie Johnson Johnson (she had also married a Johnson). Her father, Milford, served as keeper at Point Loma from 1931 to 1952.

“My mother was a great cook and our little old dining room really groaned with all the food and people. During the war, no matter how many were invited to our house, my dad would always go to the U.S.O. and bring at least two servicemen home for Christmas dinner.”

There were times when everything on the table came from Milford’s garden, “except sugar, salt, and pepper,” Lexie says. He raised

pigs in a large enclosure on the lighthouse grounds. “So there was always a ham on Christmas.” A good-sized fresh tree was decorated in the front room and a yule log burned in the fireplace.

Lexie loved walking in the fog, which often prevailed at Christmas time, “Though I never fell off the cliff.” Quiet as it might have seemed, the blaring fog signal was part of life at the lighthouse.

Fifty yards uphill from Lexie’s home was the head keeper’s dwelling where the Dudley family lived. Joan Dudley Eayrs of Oregon and older sister Pat Dudley Goulart of El Cajon also spent childhoods at

the lighthouse. Their father, James Eliot Dudley, was appointed keeper in 1938 and stayed until mid-1950.

Dudley’s three children were born during his tenure at Point Loma.

“We always had a big tree,” Joan says, “often standing in the corner of the sunporch. As we got older, Pat and I did the decorating; we learned to hang that tinsel piece by piece.”

There were 105 individual panes of glass in the sunporch windows.

Joan and Pat both tell of having made mixtures of water and BonAmi (a cleaning powder) for snowdrifts in the corners of each pane.

“But whoever made the snow, also got the job of cleaning it off,” Joan says.

“I don’t really think the ships at sea could see any of the snow on the panes,” Pat laughs.

Pat also remembers decorations at Marston’s Department Store, and celebrating with their Ballast Point Lighthouse neighbors, the Pozanac and Franke families.

“There was eggnog and old-fashioned fruit cake. Homemade plum pudding with flamed brandy sauce.

A huge turkey, grown in Dad’s chicken yard. Fried parsnips from the garden, rutabagas and cranberry sauce. Often we had lobster from our own rocks.”

Brothers Matt and Adam Zack are now involved in expanding the family business statewide. Noting the Point Loma site closed escrow April 1, Adam Zack said construction to refit the former Fresh & Easy began Aug. 1.

“We're probably about 75 percent complete right now,” said Adam Zack, noting finishing touches remain that will take some time.

Zack said Jensen's prides itself on its local-community focus.

“Our big mission is to be part of the communities we're in – and we've been in them for a long time,” he said.

“We really spent a lot of time talking to locals, to get a feel for what they wanted and expected in a store. We used that feedback to come up with our mix of what we feel the community is really looking for.”

What people are seeking, Zack said, is “great prices, quality and variety in

will have a full liquor license and local brews on tap.

At the helm of operations will be general manager Gabriel Shantz, who lives just a few blocks away from the establishment and understands the heart of Ocean Beach.

Working hand-in-hand with the owner, David Schiffman, they are creating a vision for Voltaire Beach House to be a truly comfortable, neighborhood hub.

Noting “nobody's quite like us,” Zack said the new Jensen's has a deli, self-service food and salad bars, even a poke bar with sushi chefs.

“We're trying to solve people's lunch and dinner needs, and our hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day,” said Adam Zack. “We're taking this store kind of slow,” he said adding, “We'll walk before we run. We're going to go slow, so we get it right.

The program that we do will just continue to get better.”

Jon Linney, Peninsula Community Planning Board chair, hailed the grocery's stores opening as a major step forward for local community control.

“We took our neighborhood grocery for granted – until it was not there,” said Linney, who noted much of the Peninsula – La Playa, the base, Wooded Area, Sunset Cliffs – “is miles from a full-service grocery.”

Linney also pointed out the Jensen’s opening translates into 68 new jobs.

“Dad always shopped for us himself,” both sisters happily recall.

Salaries for lightkeepers were meager. “Our parents were frugal and we were given what was necessary, with a few toys for fun.” On Christmas morning, gifts at the Dudley

dwelling were handed out one by one, for the lasting pleasure of all.

These daughters of two Point Loma lighthouse keepers knew no other way of life, but that the sea surrounded them. “Christmas for us was probably much like it was for everybody else,” Joan says.

There were no Christmas lights on the lighthouse tower or outside anywhere. Lexie notes, “I don’t think that was listed as acceptable in the strict rules of lighthouse keeping.”

"We have a very balanced offense and that's what got us here," Balistreri said. "We (the coaching staff) watched film and created game plans for 14-15 hours a day to prepare for our opponents."

He noted the team added a special new defense during the tournament, calling it the "Disney defense," which coaches signaled by putting a fist on each side of their head in a tribute to Mickey Mouse.

Balistreri also cited intelligence as one of his team's weapons.

"One of our strengths is we are versatile and the kids can adapt. We have over 20 formations we can run without a huddle. And this is important because as you get older, if you're not smart enough, you won't play on the field."
