f you’ve recently cut through the alley alongside Apple Tree Supermarket on Newport Avenue, you may have noticed a new mural on the side of the building that brought a smile to your face. And that’s exactly what it’s supposed to do. Back in 2002, Chicagobased artist and designer
Mathew Hoffman created a simple sticker that read “You Are Beautiful” in order to spread some positivity in his neighborhood. He put the sticker everywhere, and eventually it evolved into a nationwide YAB trend. Hoffman is on a mission to put one YAB mural in every state and has encouraged people to write a letter about why they believed their city should be chosen.
OB resident Stephanie La Bue-Robles knew her upbeat and diverse neighborhood would be the perfect home. “I knew I had some competition with San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz, but I really wrote from my heart,” the 35-year-old yoga teacher said. “We are an eclectic community that loves art and that appreciates beauty in all forms.
We're really accepting here. It doesn't matter what you look like, or how much money you have, or even if you have a house or not. OB accepts everybody.” La Bue-Robles encourages people who see the sign to take a photo and use the hashtags #yab, #yabsticker, or #youarebeautifulOB. A judge on Feb. 25 scheduled an April 16 preliminary hearing for a Point Loma woman who is accused of attacking an acquaintance with a glass bong. Layla Maria Lugo, 25, appeared before San Diego Superior Court Judge Laura Halgen, who set new court dates for Lugo following her Feb. 8 arrest. Lugo is accused of inflicting great bodily injuries in a felony assault upon a 30-year-old man at a residence near Liberty Station and two blocks from Rosecrans Street on Feb. 8, according to court records. The man was taken to a hospital, but police said his injuries were not life threatening. Lugo fled after the 2:20 p.m. incident, but police arrested her a few blocks away. She pleaded not guilty to the two assault charges on Feb. 13. She remains in the Las Colinas Women’s Detention Facility on $30,000 bail.
