SUSTAINABILITY AT ESC.
It’s not just the Training Hub that’s future-proofing our planet. We have invested millions of pounds secured through a Salix grant from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) to deliver energy saving projects, with the aim of becoming carbon zero by 2030.
Our decarbonisation plan includes opportunities to decrease energy consumption and heat loads, increase onsite renewable generation, and improve carbon performance across our sites. This includes the addition of Ground Source Heat Pumps (Ore Valley, Eastbourne and Lewes) and Air Source Heat Pumps (Station Plaza and Lewes).
TAKING ACTION FOR THE PLANET.
We’re combating climate change by planting trees in Uganda and Bangladesh. In Uganda, 5,000 tropical hardwoods including 1,500 rare Mvule offset our carbon footprint. In Bangladesh, we support planting 600 freshwater mangroves to prevent flooding and protect communities. These projects reflect the College’s commitment to sustainability and global impact.

A-Level Programmes
3
A-Levels are two-year courses designed to prepare you for university, apprenticeships, or the workplace.
You’ll typically choose three A-Levels, or mix them with BTECs or other qualifications. Our programme follows a linear structure, meaning you’ll sit exams at the end of your second year rather than after each module.
Where can A-Levels take you?
University - A-Levels are one of the most popular routes to university. Choosing subjects relevant to your degree can strengthen your application. Our UCAS surgeries provide expert guidance on course selection, personal statements, and university applications.
Apprenticeships - After completing A-Levels, you can start a Higher Apprenticeship, gaining practical skills while studying up to degree level—a great alternative to university.
Work - A-Levels can also lead straight into employment. Many students have secured roles in banks, accountancy firms, law offices, and language schools, often through work experience placements linked to their studies.
Mixed study programme:
Look out for this badge! A mixed study programme combines A-Levels and Technical & Professional courses.

Apprenticeships.
What is an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships at East Sussex College offer flexible learning options: day release (one day a week at campus), block release (one week at a time), or Workbased learning with some college attendance. You’ll work at a relevant employer, applying and embedding your apprenticeship knowledge, skills, and behaviours in a real work environment.
You will learn on the job and gain qualifications at the same time.
Apprenticeships are for UK residents aged 16+ who have finished secondary education, whether they are school leavers, already employed, or adults.
School Leavers.
If you’re 16-18, an apprenticeship counts as full-time education. It allows you to break into your desired industry, gain qualifications, and get work experience. You’ll be paid for your time at work and for the time spent studying.
How do I find an Apprenticeship?
There are a few ways to find an apprenticeship.
To secure an Apprenticeship, start by finding your own employer. Offer to do work experience, which could lead to an Apprenticeship opportunity. Create a concise CV (no more than two pages) and research the manager/ owner of the company for sending your details. We can provide additional information to the employer if needed.
Register for the Talent Bank and attend remote Apprenticeship Information Sessions at East Sussex College via Zoom. We’ll address any questions and keep your details on file for potential vacancies. Check our website regularly for live apprenticeship vacancies linked to real employers: www.escg. ac.uk/ apprenticeships/vacancies/.
Explore live Apprenticeship opportunities on the National Apprenticeship website www.gov. uk/apply-apprenticeship. Create an account to apply and complete the application form thoroughly, including your qualifications. If you’re 16 - 18, consider applying for a full-time course alongside Apprenticeship applications.

Key facts:
Maths & English.
For apprentices aged 16-18, if you don’t have GCSE grade C/4 or Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English, you will be required to complete Functional Skills alongside your apprenticeship. For apprentices aged 19+, if you don’t hold these qualifications, it’s at your employer’s discretion whether you need to complete Functional Skills. You’ll be asked to provide certificates if you have GCSEs, so we can check if you are exempt. Functional Skills are practical qualifications designed to help in both work and everyday life.
Earn a salary.
With an apprenticeship you must be paid at least the Minimum National Apprenticeship wage. If you turn 19 in the second year of your apprenticeship, you must then be paid minimum wage for your age.
How long does Apprenticeshipanlast?
College apprenticeships last 1-4 years, depending on the programme and any approved prior learning. You will be employed with a contract lasting at least the apprenticeship duration and cannot be self-employed. As an employee, you will receive holiday pay, sick leave, and statutory employment rights.
Train - debt free!
As an apprentice you will never be asked to pay towards the cost of the qualification. This means that you will never have to take out a student loan, but you will have the benefits of still gaining a formal qualification.
Off-the-job training.
If employed for at least 30 hours per week, six hours will be dedicated to training. This includes day-release to college, compiling your portfolio, written work, assessor meetings, job shadowing, mentoring, competitions, mock assessments, and industry events. You will also be paid for this training.
Gain a qualification.
At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll receive a certificate confirming your skills, knowledge, and behaviours for your job role. We offer apprenticeships at various levels based on your job responsibilities. Many apprentices start lower and complete multiple apprenticeships, advancing within their company and into higher education.

Supported Transition
Learners are given dedicated time to become familiar with the college environment and routines, helping to reduce anxiety and build self-esteem. This supportive approach fosters confidence and prepares learners to successfully transition into departmental courses and college life.
Our Pathways programme prepares 16-19-year-olds with little or no formal qualifications for Level 1 Technical and Professional courses. Improve employability, social skills, English, maths, and IT through practical learning relevant to specific industries, giving you the skills to succeed.
Pathways (16-18)
We know that it can sometimes be difficult to reconnect with education and training. We put together our Inclusive Pathways programme to support and build the confidence of young people who want to make a commitment to progress onto mainstream college courses. We will work with you to develop a plan just for you and help you to improve your maths and English, if necessary.
“ I am an only child and haven’t been in an educational environment since year 9, so coming back to Pathways has helped me build my confidence with socialising and meeting new people, new experiences, without freaking out.”
