AT EAST SUSSEX COLLEGE
We are delighted that you would like to find out more about studying at East Sussex College (formerly Sussex Coast College and Sussex Downs College which merged in March 2018). We are based in the beautiful South Downs and coastal areas of South East England. We have three campuses: two on the south coast in Eastbourne and Hastings, and one in the historic county town of Lewes. We are a government college with accreditation from the British Council or our English language provision. In our 2018 British Council inspection report, that was carried out in Lewes and Eastbourne, we achieved 13 out of the 15 areas of strength, and we therefore retain our position as one of the top English language providers in the UK. We are also proud to have won an award for Excellence in International Student Support in Further Education from the National Union of Students, and the UK Council for International Student Affairs. We employ a full-time Immigration Compliance Officer to help advise you on all aspects of student visas.
We have around 5,500 full-time UK students, in addition to around 200 international students at any one time from around 35 different countries. This rich mix of cultures and backgrounds makes for a vibrant, exciting and welcoming learning community. We are very proud of our students and their achievements. Our students have, in recent years, progressed to Oxford, Cambridge, London School of Economics, Durham, and to many other top universities and conservatoires, including those outside the UK such as Harvard University and the University of Hong Kong.
The last year has seen significant growth in our international work, with the college attracting an ever increasing amount of groups for ministays, English combined with work experience, and English combined with academic subjects. Numbers for individual English courses have also gone up and we are welcoming a growing number of Tier 4 and International Study Year students. East Sussex College is definitely the place if you are seeking high quality learning, new experiences, and the opportunity to meet people from a wide range of backgrounds. Our English Language examination results are outstanding and have been above national averages for the past three years. Cambridge PET, FCE and CAE exams had 100% pass rate in 2019. Where Are They Now? This year marks the 10th year since I graduated from East Sussex College. Many things have happened since then, but it is nice to take a more careful look back and start to appreciate that the college days have actually offered much more than I had realised at my graduation.

To me, ESC was the transition point in my journey; it connected my education back in China to the undergraduate and masters experience in the UK and the ongoing PhD study in the USA. It built a foundation for the academic kit you need to develop for university, and it equipped you with the skills to deal with stress, to balance coursework and extra-curricular activities, and most importantly, to manage relationships with peers and
I started studying at East Sussex College in 2005. I studied English, Maths and Information Technology as my goal was to study Software Engineering at Brighton University. In 2006, I was accepted by Brighton University and graduated with honours. Right after graduating, I started studying an MSc in Theoretical Computer Science at the University of Edinburgh.

Once I graduated from my master’s programme, I emigrated to the United States and settled in the San Francisco Bay Area. Within a few weeks of arriving in the US, I was able to get a job at a consulting firm working for technology companies such as Kabam, Facebook and Google. After a couple of years, I started working for a mobile cybersecurity company, where I was quickly promoted to the role of Chief Architect. In 2015 I founded a cybersecurity start-up, along with
instructors for your higher education. So on a personal note, ESC really provided a comfortable environment that cushioned all the impacts down the road. To many of us at ESC, our tutor, Jo, was so much more than a personal tutor, she was a mother eagle. She protects, helps and equips you to become a grown-up – she forgives your occasional lack of motivation, but she fences with your indolence and lack of discipline, and she never tolerates with you giving up on yourself. I am now completing my PhD on natural hazards, specialising in landslides, at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the USA. ESC stays with me as I now use many of the teaching and tutoring techniques that I learnt from Jo with my undergraduate students!
a friend of mine, in Silicon Valley’s competitive market. Within two years of starting the company, our start-up was acquired by Tenable Network Security. Our product is now being used globally by many large organisations. I am currently serving as Director of Engineering at Tenable Network Security, leading a large distributed team of engineers. During my time at East Sussex College, I was guided very clearly towards the steps I needed to take towards achieving my aims. My tutor and teachers truly cared about me and my goals. They invested a lot of time in ensuring that I was making progress and on the right track, and they provided a level of support that I have never experienced since then. Without their help and guidance, I would not have been able to lay the foundation needed for my further studies and career.

• Suitable for those on a smaller budget and allows students free time to pursue other activities. • We can now arrange the option of an unpaid work placement to combine with your English course for European Union passport holders only with a right to work. This will be an excellent addition to your CV and will greatly help you to secure work upon your return to your home country. • The 15 hours General English includes grammar and vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading and writing, plus a weekly tutorial to check your progress and let you know what’s happening in the college and local area. • If you are attending this course in Hastings you will be in mixed nationality classes with overseas students living permanently in the UK taking English as a second language (ESOL).

IELTS Summer Preparation Course
IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. It measures your ability to communicate across all four language skills-reading, writing, listening and speaking.
The course is ideal if you need to take the test for academic or professional purposes in your home country or elsewhere. It offers focused English language teaching which is designed to fully prepare you for the IELTS test. The classes focus on the skills needed to pass the exam at all levels. The minimum level is 4.0 and teachers are experienced in stretching and supporting their students so that you can achieve your individual goals. East Sussex College has its own IELTS test centre at the Eastbourne campus and you have the option of taking the test here at the end of the course. Please note that our Eastbourne IELTS test centre is not approved for UKVI IELTS so cannot be used for applying for a UK visa. For UK visa applications you will need to arrange a test at a UKVIapproved test centre.

1-1 Gold Standard English Language
The Gold Standard class provides an expert teacher on a one-to-one basis with the course content developed specifically to meet your individual needs.
You can choose from General English, Executive English or exam preparation in IELTS, PET, FCE, CAE or BEC. You can study this class on a parttime or full-time basis and it can be arranged to fit around teaching or work schedules on all campuses. One-to-one Lessons can also be a very useful additional support to help you on our English Language Plus and International Study Year programmes should you require them. The number of sessions available is flexible to meet your needs and can be combined with standard group classes.

Young Learner Summer School (EASTBOURNE OR HASTINGS)

We can offer a wide range of group packages depending on your requirements, from simple General English with social programme courses to a more complex course involving different subjects. For young learners the age range in Eastbourne is 11-17 years old. In Lewes and Hastings the age range is 14-17 years old. Here are the most popular options we have recently hosted (min age for all three options below is 16 years old): 1. English plus unpaid work experience (for EU students only) Normally students follow a week’s course in General or Business English with possibly CV writing or interview technique classes before undertaking one or two weeks of unpaid work placement in the local area. 2. I have never celebrated Christmas in my country so I was looking forward to it and very pleased to have the special dinner turkey, sprouts and potatoes. The atmosphere was fabulous. Care Of Under 18s East Sussex College welcomes students from all over the world. This section describes how we care for you if you are under 18 years of age.
PARENTAL CONSENT Before arriving at East Sussex College we will require you and your parents/ guardian to sign a parental consent form. This is to confirm that you and your parents understand the rules that we have in place for your welfare and the level of supervision that we provide for you. The College will inform your parents/ guardian of any breaches in the rules and the consequences. The form will include the your parents/guardian contact details in case of emergency.
TRAVELLING FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE ACCOMMODATION East Sussex College works with trusted local taxi companies to provide airport transfers. We strongly advise that your parents/guardians book our airport transfer service in advance of your arrival.
ACCOMMODATION If you are under 18 we usually require you to book homestay accommodation through the college. Alternative arrangements where you will have adult supervision, such as staying with a family friend, can be accepted, provided we have written confirmation of the arrangements from your parents at the time of the enrolment.

East Sussex College carefully recruits homestay hosts who meet British Council requirements. All homestays are inspected at least every two years by our Accommodation and Welfare Team. East Sussex College will only place you in a homestay where the main carer has provided an Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certificate, which confirms suitability to work with children. You will be placed in a single room. Twin room accommodation is possible if you are travelling with a friend of the same sex and similar age. You will be treated as part of the household and be able to enjoy morning and evening meals with your host family. There will always be a responsible adult at home overnight. East Sussex College has strict curfew rules if you are under 18. All homestay hosts are aware of the rules and will contact the emergency number if you are not home on time. Our curfew time is 23:00 daily. The student must provide written permission from their parents if they wish to be absent from the homestay overnight.
MEALS Homestays provide breakfast and dinner every day. Lunch is not provided but we have a canteen at all campuses, where you can buy lunch for a small price (around ÂŁ4 for a full hot lunch). Alternatively, there are shops on the campuses where sandwiches, snacks, and drinks can be purchased. At weekends, you will be provided with a light lunch by your homestay host.
TRAVEL Lewes Our Lewes campus is very close to the centre of town and most of our homestay hosts live very close as well. That means you’ll never be more than a 25-30-minute walk away from college. Your homestay host will show you how to get to college on your first day. You can then make your own way to college for the rest of your time with us. Eastbourne Our Eastbourne campus is just outside the town centre and you

may require a bus pass to reach the college. You can purchase a bus pass from the driver when you get on the bus. These normally cost £15 for a week’s worth of travel. Hastings Our homestay hosts in Hastings all live within a 10-15-minute walk from the campus. You will be able to travel between your homestay host and the college unsupervised. Your homestay host will show you how to get to college on your first day. You can then make your own way to college for the rest of your time with us.
SUPERVISION East Sussex College does not provide 24-hour supervision. After class you are very welcome to join the college’s social activities, relax in the common areas, or use the Learning Resource Centre. You will not be supervised during your free time but the College will give advice on how to stay safe during these times.
AT THE COLLEGE If you are under the age of 18 and on English Language Plus or mainstream courses, you may be in classes with adults. You are expected to attend every lesson and you must be on time. If you are under 18, you cannot take holidays or days off without parental consent. If you are absent from College we will try to contact you. If there is no response, the International Accommodation and Welfare Officer will check with the homestay and follow up until we are sure that you are safe.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES The College provides a variety of optional social activities. These are a good way for you to socialise and practise your English. Not all social activities are suitable if you are under 18, but we do aim to offer a variety of activities that everyone can take part in. All social activities organised by East Sussex College are supervised. East Sussex College also recommends a local company (UK Study Tours) which organises full-day weekend excursions for you. UK Study Tours has carried out their own risk assessments and follow best practice in particular with regard to students aged 16 and 17. However, if you are 16 and 17, you will be treated as an adult. Excursions organised by external companies are guided but there will normally be some time (2-3 hours) where you will be unsupervised. For example, there may be time for you to go shopping. These trips are not run exclusively for East Sussex College and people of all ages from other local schools often attend.
INTERNET ACCESS East Sussex College provides free access to the internet and wi-fi across our campuses so you can stay in contact with friends and family. Our servers are set to block content that is not suitable for under 18s.
East Sussex College is committed to providing a safe, supportive environment for everyone, and in particular for under 18s. You will receive a full induction on your first day, where you will be introduced to key members of staff. The induction includes a tour of the building, information about the course, the college, surrounding towns, and health and safety information. You will be issued with a 24-hour contact number that you can call for any out-of-hours emergencies. If you are under 18 you will be reminded of the curfew times and general code of conduct agreed in the parental consent form. You will be given specific guidance on staying safe in and out of college and you will be made aware of who you can talk to if you need help. You will be given your college ID on your first day and it is important that you wear your college ID badge at all times while you at college. The College has a safeguarding policy. All members of staff have received appropriate safeguarding and child protection training and know the procedures that should be followed if there is cause for concern. All homestay hosts receive relevant information and guidance on safeguarding young people and who to report concerns to. All homestay providers who host students under 18 are required to provide a valid Enhanced DBS.
