INTRODUCTION

Why Study Anywhere Else.

East Sussex College students celebrated receiving their A-Level, T-Level and Technical and Professional results in summer 2022, following two years of hard work and dedication! It was a history-making year for the College, as one of only 50 T-Levels providers nationally, to receive the first T-Level results.

The first cohort of T-Levels at East Sussex College had a superb 100% pass-rate - 8% above national average. An impressive 81% of those T-Level students achieved a higher Merit or Distinction grade.

39 A-Level courses received a 100% pass-rate - highlighting the quality of provision on offer at the College and fantastic news for all of our students and staff who worked tirelessly through lockdown and beyond.

Our Eastbourne campus achieved an outstanding 99% pass-rate. Building on this success, the A-Level provision at Eastbourne has now been expanded to include a wider range of subject choices for students.

Student Voice.

The Student Voice at East Sussex College is central to providing an exceptional student experience.

To ensure a representative Students’ Voice, each course group, including adult, apprentices and international students, elect two Course Representatives. Course Representatives represent the views of their fellow students at both the campus-based students councils and their relevant course area curriculum feedback meetings.

The Student Voice also includes:

Students’ Union -

All post 16-year-old students at East Sussex College are automatically members of the National Union of Students (NUS) and as such, members of the College’s Students’ Union.

Students’ Governors -

Student Governors are elected to both the College’s campus-based Local Governing Boards and the College’s Main Governing Board. The role of the Student Governor is different to that of the Course Representative who is required to represent the views of their respective groups. Student Governors provide a student voice, their voice, to the College governing body and respective governance meetings.

Turing works to provide students with the opportunity to experience a global education - the programme provides free travel, accommodation, cultural experiences, language support and a 4-week work placement with a local employer.

We were delighted that Travel & Tourism and Cabin Crew students had the chance to visit Disneyland Paris - a fantastic opportunity to aid their learning and, for some, a once in a lifetime experience. Students attended a convention, valuable talks and had loads more fun opportunities!

We provide our students with the perfect platform to shape their futures and become success stories. Many of our former students have remained in touch and kept us up to date on their progress since leaving the College. Here are just a few examples from some of our exceptional recent students.

Iman & Almayra Shah.

East Sussex College Performing Arts

alumnae Iman and Almayra Shah are already making waves in the film/television industry. The pair recently featured in a TV advert for homeware giant, IKEA, and have had several other high profile ventures in acting and theatre roles since leaving the College in 2022.

“When you’re in this industry you get given a voice,” Almayra told the College. “I’d love to become a motivational speaker and help people struggling with mental health issues and raise awareness for certain things. When you become such a big influencer, you can become a role model for people. I’d love for someone to look up to me as a role model and set good examples.”

Almayra added, for want of a better term, or perhaps to highlight a strongly maledominated industry, “Our main goal is to make it up there with the big boys!”

Iman has ambitions for the West End and has the right attitude and outlook. Her priorities? “I don’t want to limit myself on anything,” she said. “My main goal is to be part of a successful atmosphere.”

Josh is Parliamentary Spokesman for the Eastbourne and Willingdon Liberal Democratscampaigning to be Eastbourne’s next MP. Staff always said Josh would be Prime Minister one day! Watch this space!

Jupiter Humphrey-Bishop.

Jupiter Humphrey-Bishop, Hospitality and Catering alumna, returned to college in May 2023 to speak to current students about her award-winning journey in the industry so far and her current role in the Royal Household! Jupiter finished her studies in 2019 and has gone on to excel in a variety of high profile roles in the industry, including at The Grand Hotel in Eastbourne and her current role at the Royal Household.

Jupiter was also crowned the winner at the 2023 Gold Service Scholarship awards - a prestigious title for anyone keen to climb to the pinnacle of the hospitality industry.

“It was during that time at college that they gave me all of this motivation and encouragement to look ahead into the future. It got me thinking about my two year, five year, ten year plan. Work placements were really, really important and I’m so thankful for these opportunities.”

We prioritise building strong partnerships with parents, understanding that parental involvement plays a crucial role in a student’s educational journey. Through engaging welcome events and informative parents’ evenings, we ensure that parents feel welcomed and involved in their child’s education.

What is Further Education (FE).

Your young person is on the brink of embarking on an exciting new chapter in their educational journey known as “FE” or Further Education. FE offers them the opportunity to delve deeper into their passions and interests beyond school. It’s a chance for them to specialise in specific areas or industries that truly captivate them.

They can pursue Technical and Professional courses like Diplomas and T-Levels, which provide practical knowledge and skills. Alternatively, they can opt for a more hands-on approach through an Apprenticeship. Another pathway is to explore three A-Level subjects that align with their academic aspirations.

All of these routes are the next step in helping your young person prepare for work or university. FE is free to all young people starting a course if they are aged 19 or under on 31st August prior to them starting college. However, there may be additional costs for kit, uniform and trips.

Come & Visit Us.

We host a number of open events throughout the year at each of our campuses. This is a fantastic chance for you to visit with your young person, have a look around, chat to our tutors and get to know us a little better. Don’t worry if you can’t make it to one of our events, you can also book a campus tour!

Choosing the Right Course(s).

There are many qualifications to choose from at East Sussex College. Your young person may already know what they’d like to study, but don’t worry if they’re still undecided. Our highly qualified team can talk through all the options - looking at things like predicted grades, personal interests, and future goals. Our careers advisors are also on hand to guide and recommend next steps after college.

Our Safeguarding team ensures that your young person is safe and protected. Our wellbeing mentors provide a safe space for students to seek advice and support about any issues they may be facing, whether college-related or something more personal.

Additional Learning Support.

If your young person requires any additional support then our Additional Learning Support (ALS) team can help. They’re an incredibly important part of our college and can help with things such as learning difficulties and disabilities, inclass support, and assistive technology.

Financial Support.

Students joining us from school, aged between 16 and 18, won’t be required to pay any course or exam fees.

There may be some additional costs for courses such as uniform, materials and equipment or trips, but students may be eligible for a grant or bursary. This topic can be discussed in greater detail during your young person’s interview or at enrolment.

Maths & English.

If your young person didn’t manage to achieve a Grade 4 in GCSE Maths or English, then they will be able to retake them at college. Depending on their grade and the outcome of a short assessment, we’ll be able to enrol students on the right level of course ensuring they can work towards gaining either a Functional Skills or GCSE qualification.

Education & Inclusivity for All.

As a college, we continually strive to ensure our college environment promotes diversity, respect, and inclusivity.

We collectively recognise the value that disability, gender, race, sexuality, faith, culture, age, and background brings to our college. We strive to produce a work and learning environment that is safe and free from all forms of discrimination. As a student of ESC, your young person is expected to treat others with respect.

ESC Training Hub.

East Sussex College was selected to establish one of five new decarbonisation academies across Sussex to support the development of skills in retrofitting and green energy installation. The ESC Training Hub in partnership with OHM Energy was officially opened by author, documentary filmmaker and TV presenter Simon Reeve in October 2022.

“We need to protect what we’ve got, we need to claw back what we’ve lost. Renewable energy is all part of that. We have to believe in it, we have to invest in it, we have to study it, train up to use it - the ESC Training Hub is so needed locally, but we need more around the country. I think ESC should be taking over Britain to get more of them out there!”

O

CARBON ZERO TARGETS 40
SCAN HERE TO... find out more about our ESC Training Hub.

The ESC Training Hub can be found at Hampden Retail Park, Eastbourne, BN23 6QU and is just a few minutes away from our main Eastbourne campus.

Inside, students and apprentices get to work with the latest retrofitting technology in the construction industry, gaining experience through hands-on learning, which includes a replica house within the building, complete with solar panels and other retrofitting technology.

This is a truly groundbreaking step in terms of green training. We are ensuring the future of our construction workers, giving them the knowledge and skills they need for a net zero future. In February 2023, we even welcomed delegates from SkillsFuture Singapore who came to see the facilities, with the aim of adopting a similar training resource in Singapore.

Sustainable Solutions at ESC.

It’s not just the ESC Training Hub that’s future-proofing our planet. We are taking massive advancements across our campuses to create a more sustainable future.

We have invested millions of pounds secured through a Salix grant from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) to deliver energy-saving projects, with the aim of becoming carbon zero by 2030.

Our decarbonisation plan includes a range of opportunities to decrease energy consumption and heat loads, increase on-site renewable generation, and improve carbon performance across our sites.

This includes the addition of Ground Source Heat Pumps (Ore Valley, Eastbourne and Lewes) and Air Source Heat Pumps (Station Plaza and Lewes).

Mvula Carbon Capture Project.

We signed up to the Mvula Carbon Capture Project in 2020, run by United Nations Association Eastbourne, and have pledged to plant 5,000 mvule trees each year in Equatorial Uganda.

The mvule tree can capture an exceptional amount of CO2, estimated to be five times that of an oak tree in the UK. We calculated that we produce 5,786 tonnes of CO2 per year, so we offset our emissions with the trees planted. It is expected that within the next 20 years these 6,000 trees will capture at least 60,000 tonnes of CO2.

Advanced Level qualifications, better known as A-Levels, are two-year courses that are perfect for helping you get into university.

Most students choose to study three A-Levels or equivalent (such as a combination of A-Levels and BTECs/other Technical and Professional courses). Our A-Level programme follows the linear structure which means your exams will be at the end of your two years, rather than at the end of each module or year.

What Next?

All of our courses provide fantastic progression opportunities, whether your goal is going away to university or staying local to study your degree here with us.

You may also be considering an Apprenticeship or entering full-time employment. Our A-Levels give students excellent and varied progression opportunities.

Opportunities.

University - A-Levels are the most common route to university. If you want to study a degree, it is useful to look ahead at the courses that you are interested in as this often helps you figure out which A-Levels to take. We regularly run UCAS surgeries to give course advice and help you with writing your application and personal statement.

Apprenticeships - Once you have finished your A-Levels, you could start an Apprenticeship. The introduction of Higher Apprenticeships a couple of years ago, means that you will now have an opportunity to study up to the equivalent level of a degree.

Work - Students may be able to find full-time positions in a number of organisations that relate to the subject they have studied, thanks to their work experience placements. In the past, students have gone to work for local banks, accountancy firms, solicitors, and language schools.

Entry Requirements.

Our general entry requirements to study 3 A-Levels are: 5 GCSEs grade 4-9 including English Language and/or Maths at grade 5.

Our general entry requirements to study 4 A-Levels are: 6 GCSEs grade 4-9 including English Language and Maths at grade 6.

Subject specific entry criteria may also apply.

What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship delivery is either day release, where you will come to one of our campuses to study once a week, block release, where you come to college to study for a week at a time or predominantly work based learning, meaning you will be largely based at your employer workplace with some college attendance either at a campus or online.

For all Apprenticeships, you will be working at a relevant employer organisation where you will be able to apply your knowledge in a real work environment, embedding the knowledge, skills and behaviours that you have learnt in your Apprenticeship study.

Apprenticeships

Our Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are suitable for anyone 16+, who has finished secondary education and lives in the UK. Apprenticeships are suitable for those already in employment, school leavers or adults.

School Leavers

If you are 16 - 18 then you will have to remain in education and an Apprenticeship counts as a form of fulltime education. It is a way to break into your desired industry, gain a qualification and gain work experience in your chosen field. As an apprentice you will be paid for your time at work, as well as the time you spend studying.

Adults

Many adults use an Apprenticeship as a way to break into a new industry or build upon their existing skills, in a current job role. You will be able to progress in your career without paying for the qualification and you will be able to sign up to the Apprenticeship scheme regardless of age.

Employed

Many of our existing apprentices are already in employment and approach the college to gain a qualification whilst staying in their existing job role. It can be a way to upskill and gain a nationally recognised qualification, which is beneficial for career development.

How do I find an Apprenticeship?

There are a few ways to find an Apprenticeship, including:

Find your own employer

You can start with this option at any time if you hope to secure an Apprenticeship. Offering to do some work experience may be a good way forward as you could then try and turn it into an Apprenticeship.

Start putting together a CV. If you don’t already have one, start by Googling ‘write my CV’ and you will get lots of ideas. It should be no more than two pages. You will need to find out who the manager/ owner of the company is so that your details are sent to the relevant person. We can ring the employer with more information if they would like to take you on.

Look on the National Apprenticeship website

All the live Apprenticeship vacancies are on this website: www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship

You will have to create an account if you want to apply for anything. If you decide to apply you’ll need to complete an application form - fill this in with as much detail as you can as these are used to decide who to shortlist and put forward to employers. Put down any qualifications you already have and be honest about all of the information you include. If you are 16 - 18, we recommend that you apply for a full-time course just in case you can’t secure an Apprenticeship.

Register for the Talent Bank

It may be useful for you to attend a remote Apprenticeship Information Session at East Sussex College, currently running over Zoom. We will run through any questions that you may have and explain Apprenticeships in further detail.

We will also keep you on record on our Talent Bank in case any vacancies come up that may be of interest. Don’t forget to keep up to date with the latest East Sussex College vacancies by visiting: www.escg.ac.uk/apprenticeships/ vacancies/. You can apply for these jobs at any time and are live apprenticeship vacancies that the college offers linked to real employers.

Key facts

Maths & English

Maths and English Functional Skills will be included alongside the Apprenticeship if you don’t have GCSE grades 4 or above, or Level 2 Functional Skills, regardless of age. You will be asked to provide certificates if you do have GCSEs so we can make you exempt. Functional Skills are very practical qualifications, and the aim is that they apply to your working life and personal life.

Earn a salary

With an Apprenticeship you must be paid at least the Minimum National Apprenticeship wage. If you turn 19 in the second year of your Apprenticeship, you must then be paid minimum wage for your age.

How long does an Apprenticeship last?

All the College’s Apprenticeships last between 1-4 years, depending on your chosen Apprenticeship. Any approved prior learning you may have may also mean the programme length is reduced, depending on what you can evidence and experience in the subject of interest.

You will be employed, with a contract of employment provided by an employer. The contract of employment should last at least the duration of the Apprenticeship and you cannot be self-employed. Because you are employed you will benefit from holiday pay and sick leave and are subject to statutory employment rights and responsibilities as per any person of employed status.

Train - debt free!

As an apprentice you will never be asked to pay towards the cost of the qualification. This means that you will never have to take out a student loan, but you will have the benefits of still gaining a formal qualification.

Off-the-job training

If you are employed for at least 30 hours per week, six hours of your working week will be spent on training. Training will be made up of lots of elements, but essentially you will be asked to record any activities where you are learning a skill relevant to the job role. Forms of training include day-release to college, putting together your portfolio of evidence, written work, meetings with your assessor, observing other members of staff (shadowing), being mentored by other members of staff, competitions, mock assessments, industry events or conferences and so on. You will also be paid for this training.

Gain a qualification

At the end of the Apprenticeship, you will receive a certificate confirming that you have the relevant skills, knowledge and behaviours for your specific job role. We offer a range of Apprenticeships at different levels.

The level you complete will be based upon your responsibilities within your day-to-day job role. Many of our apprentices start at a lower level and may complete more than one Apprenticeship, as they work their way up with a company and into higher level education.

Can’t make up your mind?

If you can’t decide on a course, don’t panic. Apply for your first choice, and if after your interview you want to apply for another course, we can add this to your application and arrange another interview.

Interviews:

If we have all the information we need on your application form, we will invite you to an interview. The sooner you submit your application, the sooner you’ll receive an interview. You will receive a letter/ email telling you what you will need to bring with you on your allocated day and time.

Interviews will commence in December, and interview sessions will take place regularly throughout the year. The interview is a good opportunity to find out more about your chosen subject(s) and will give you more information and make sure you are considering the right course for your future. Your parents /carers are welcome to come with you.

Offers:

After your interview, you will be given written confirmation of your offer and the exam grades (or other requirements) you need to secure your place. Once you have an offer, you will continue to receive information about starting college and your journey to an exciting future will begin.

You will be invited to attend enrolment in late August - this is when you officially become an East Sussex College student! You will need to bring in your exam results and we’ll contact you to tell you exactly when you start your course.

Course Cancellations:

In the unlikely event that your course is cancelled, we will do our best to find you an alternative course to help you succeed in your career ambitions. Where possible, any payments towards the cost of your course can be transferred to your new course. Any refunds will be credited by bank transfer (BACS) to your bank account.
