Letter from Superintendent Jeff Apse Community Task Force on Facilities Meetings Begin The District was hoping we would have 24 people express interest in being involved with a task force charged with developing solutions for District facility issues. 27 people applied for the opportunity, and while 24 was the number that was targeted for meeting organization and logistical reasons, Board members and administration appreciated the strong interest, and felt that if we have 27 people in our community stepping up to the plate and expressing an interest in coming to the table to discuss solutions for improving our programs and our facilities, then we should be welcoming them all. The following community members are on the task force: Jackie Blahnik, James Blahnik, Jill Butson, Jeff Daood, Jason Frinack, Melissa Gora, Lindsay Gust, Nancy Heim, Harrison Hundt, Lowell Jabs, Mena Kaehler, Heather Klason, Alexis Klassen, David Kramer, Jeff Mueller, David Mussell, Amber Neumann, Mitchell Prell, Megan Roessler, Rick Schaber, Julie Siebenaler, Kelly Spaulding, Heather Sullivan, Earl Voss, Drake Wagoner, Randy Ward, and Diane Welch. We believe that the group provides a strong representation of our community and are looking forward to the conversations ahead. Our first meeting was officially scheduled for Monday, October 1, 2018, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. with five other meeting dates penciled in for: October 22, November 26, December 17, January 28, and February 25. All with a start/end time of 6:30-8:30 p.m. At this time, our District does not have a comprehensive facility improvement plan in place. We want to build one that clearly maps out our issues, solutions for the issues, a timeline for addressing the issues, potential costs associated with addressing the issues, and funding options for generating revenue to fund the solutions. We want a plan that includes the voices of our communities’ stakeholders and that will help keep our facilities on track allowing the District to cater to the student program needs of today, while also allowing us to be fluid and adapt to meet future student program needs. Along with regularly scheduled task force meetings, we are planning to schedule meetings with various stakeholder groups to collect input that the task force will be able to take into consideration. Thanks for your support of St. Charles Public Schools.

Letter from Elementary Principal Ryan Ihrke I am excited to begin my first year as your Elementary School Principal. It will be interesting to have come full circle, and to be back in the first school I ever attended. I would like to thank those of you whom I have met for the warm welcome. I look forward to continuing to meet new people and to a great start to the 2018-2019 school year. I’d like to give a little background on myself. I grew up in the area; spending much of my teenage years hunting and fishing in the Whitewater Valley. I began school in St. Charles, but moved to the Plainview school district in third grade when my mother moved. I graduated from Plainview, before it became PEM, and moved to the Twin Cities to pursue a two-year degree in Music Business. After graduating, I transferred into the University of Minnesota’s English Literature program, where I received my Bachelor’s and then pursued my teaching license working with Winona State. I spent some time teaching in Pillager, MN but when my wife and I began having children we decided to move closer to home. After moving to Rochester, I taught at Triton in Dodge Center, MN while also finishing my Master’s Degree and principal license through the University of Minnesota. I spent the previous 2 years as the High School principal at Lewiston-Altura, and teach leadership courses for St. Mary’s University. Both sides of my family are from the St. Charles area – Ihrke and Lange – so I have many relatives in the area. My wife, Chloe, and I have been married since 2010 and have 4 children: Sophia (11), Genevieve (6), Anthony (4), and Celine (2). We spend much of our time outdoors; hiking, fishing, or just taking our dog, Max, for a walk before bedtime. Please keep in mind how important it is to help create healthy school habits with your students, especially at the beginning of another school year. Some best practice tips are as follows: • Get into a consistent bedtime schedule – research suggests 10 hours of sleep for 10 year olds • Read with your children every night • Ask your children about their day at school – teach them to be excited about school • Practice Math facts and counting • Make sure your children are eating a healthy breakfast • Consider both the quality and quantity of screen time your kids get – try to limit “entertainment” screen time and encourage your kids to use technology for learning I would love a chance to meet you and your children – please stop by to introduce yourself as you drop off / pick up your kids! I will also be available to meet during our conferences on October 15 and 16. If you have any questions for me or would like to meet me in person, please feel free to call the office at 932-4910 , email me, or stop in my office and visit.

High School News 2018-2019 Peer Helper Program The Peer Helpers program is a program in which a variety of interpersonal helping skills and behaviors are taught and assumed by a student who chooses to develop a helping role with others. The group’s (composed of sophomores, juniors and seniors chosen by their peers) aim is to be available for those students who are in need of counsel and may feel more comfortable talking with a Peer Helper. Peer Helpers can be used to help a student's day to day life at SCES/SCHS; mediate tension or conflict between students, assist a student who is having difficulties at home and/or listen and talk to a student who may just need a trustworthy ear. They provide help with tutoring, mentoring, and mediation. They are trained to understand confidentiality, mediate conflict, listen effectively and know their limits… and refer students to the school counselor or the school social worker when necessary. Our Peer Helper team recently completed a very successful weekend “skills” training retreat at the Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center near Lanesboro. They will continue to meet regularly throughout the year for support, training and problem resolution. This year’s team consists of Seniors: Mark Buringa, Axel Daood, Eli DeChamps, Katie Kramer, Talyn Pearson and Grace Wagaman; Juniors: Mitchell Apse, Caleb Bahr, Hannah Bunke, Korrigan Diercks, Allison Hansen and Annika O’Hara and Sophomores: Anna Daood, Jacob Harris, Leah Mundt, Lindsay Root, Ethan Warmkagathje & Dustin Zillmer. Please say hello & thank these wonderful students for their time and efforts when you see them!

Math League - Grades 7-12 Math League begins the season! Math League is a chance for students to explore math topics outside of the classroom and talk with other students, from both our school and other schools in our area, that have a similar interest in math. It is a competitive format that is set up to be fun and challenging. The season consists of five meets and a state meet for the top conference team and top individual in the conference. St. Charles is looking forward to a fun year of competitions. We will have many returning members, however, the Math League team is always looking for new members and can add them at any time. It is never too late to join!

It is common for students to believe that a college is right for them because of family opinion or school websites, but seeing the college is key. Students must fill-out a college visit form prior to visiting.College visit forms can be found in the Student Services Office or on the school website at: http://www.scschools.net/page/4513.

Boys Basketball - Season begins Monday, November 19 1- St.Charles was invited to play in the South Metro Hoop Fest again this year. The date will be 1/26/19 @ Trinity-River Ridge High School in Eagan. St. Charles played Minneapolis Roosevelt last year in this event and will face off against Cristo Rey Jesuit Academy this year. Game time is 4:45. Cristo Rey will be a very good team. They have won 20 or more games 3 of the last 4 years (19-7 last year), and return nearly all of their team from last season. They will be highly ranked in Class AA. We have an important conference game the previous night with Dover-Eyota, so this will be a busy couple of days 2- We will again be playing in the HVL/TRC Showdown to be held at the Mayo Civic Center on Dec.15th. This event is in its 3rd year and follows the format used by many colleges where teams from rival conferences square off against each other at neutral tourney sites. St.Charles drew Byron in a prime time game, at 6:45pm in the Arena. New this year at this event will be halftime games featuring 6th grade teams from each school facing off against each other. 3 - We have several, highly touted Class AA, AAA, and AAAA non-conference teams scheduled this season in St.Croix Lutheran, Minneapolis Patrick Henry, St.Paul Johnson, St.Paul Central and others. Our schedule certainly appears on paper to be our toughest ever.
