Letter from Superintendent Jeff Apse June Issue 2021

May 13, 2021 Dear Parents and Community Members, As I write this we are preparing to close the book on the 2020-2021 school year, and I am glad to see we are finishing the year in a somewhat traditional fashion. Last week our 6th graders had the opportunity to enjoy the traditional 6th grade camp experience at Whitewater State Park (with a few adjustments to stay in compliance with pandemic requirements). To go along with that, our High School is preparing for an outdoor prom and graduation ceremony where participants will be encouraged to wear masks if they want to, but will not be required to wear them to participate in either event. To say the 2020-2021 school year was difficult would be an understatement. One way to describe it (if you have seen the movie Inside Out from Disney Pixar) is to say that we have had way too many of these moments

and not enough of these moments to help keep life balanced.

I have fielded a few questions asking what the 2021-2022 school year will be like. As of today, we know that Minnesota’s Safe Learning Plan requirements officially expire on our last day of school, May 21st, all COVID related restrictions that Minnesotans have had to follow (aside from wearing masks indoors) officially expire on May 28th, and the state’s mask mandate will expire on or before July 1, 2021. I am extremely optimistic that we will be able to deliver educational programming to our students in 2021-2022 without having to adhere to a myriad of pandemic related restrictions. I know and understand how difficult this year has been for our students and their parents. I also know and understand how difficult this year has been for our staff. They have truly gone above and beyond pushing themselves to respond to ever-changing challenges. I am proud of the effort that was put forth by all. I wish the best for our graduating seniors as they turn the page to the next chapter of their lives, and I hope that all of our students, their families and our staff will be able to find time this summer to relax, recharge their batteries, and to find peace from the burdens we have all been shouldering. Thank you for your patience and support. Sincerely,

Jeff Apse Superintendent of Schools

ST. CHARLES PUBLIC SCHOOLS FACILITY UPDATE A number of facility improvements, most stemming from the 2019 referendum, are being made to our schools. The majority of work slated for the Elementary School that was being funded by the referendum dollars is complete, and construction on the High School project commenced earlier this spring. The summer of 2021 will be extremely busy, and the High School will be closed for much of the summer to accommodate the work that is scheduled. High School construction will continue into the 2021-2022 school year, and we anticipate that the work will be completed in the spring of 2022. Click on this link to review a slideshow highlighting what has been accomplished and to preview what is in store for 2021-2022: https://drive.google.com/file/d/ 1DGA88Yiq7Pvk7mBMZy4ALb01N0s0shF9/view

High School Principal - Dr. Bernard Thank you, We had a great end to the school year. Students and staff all had to be extremely flexible because of many different factors. On top of the COVID 19 restrictions that we all dealt with, we also started the construction at the high school. I will try to post updates during the summer as bigger pieces are started or completed. (Please scan the QR code links to the right)

As we get closer to the start of school in the fall, please be on the lookout for notices of open houses and tours of the new facilities. Some areas will be completed by this time, but many areas will still be under construction for the majority of the 2021-22 school year. Though we will have some disruption next year with the completion of the project, we will have very nice improvements at the end. As always, please reach out to me personally if you are having difficulties in any area of school. Have a great (extended) summer, we will see you all back here in the fall.

Industrial Tech was busy with multiple Spring projects Technology in Woodworking: 5th hour class built benches for one of the kindergarten classes and they were delivered with a smile!

Building Trades (4th hr): The class built a shed for Habitat for Humanity of Winona County. The shed will be for a new construction home that Habitat is beginning to build in Winona. They framed the walls and cut the roof rafters at school and then we constructed the shed in Winona during the last week of school. They temporarily assembled the roof in the Shop so that students could learn the process of assembly.

FALL SPORTS BEGIN AUGUST 16, 2021

Peer Helper Corner Peer Helpers have had another successful year with 65% of the peer helper team matched currently and/or at one time with students in both buildings. They have been doing a fantastic job connecting with these students and subsequently has made a world of difference for many of them especially with such a challenging school year. Due to continued Covid restrictions, we were unable to have a midwinter mini retreat opting instead for additional virtual trainings this spring. It’s evident the school year is winding down for everyone so revisiting the importance of being there for each other as well as the student body has been encouraged at our monthly meetings.

2021 Decision Day! SCHS celebrated Decision Day 2021 in May. Seniors wore their college shirts (and pins) to celebrate their college decisions - good job Seniors! Mrs. Olson provided donuts for the Seniors.

We will be saying goodbye to our seniors at the end of this school year and saying hello to 6 new incoming sophomores next year! The recruiting/nominating process happened within the freshman class the first week of May. Current peer helpers addressed all freshman classes about the positive qualities of a peer helper, reiterated the fact that our group has been around for more than 30 years and above all, shared that we believe many times students prefer to talk to their peers about things going on in their lives – forming the framework of our group. All freshman were then asked to nominate (individual ballots) one person in their grade that they would trust to discuss a personal problem with. Nominations were tallied and voted on by current peer helper team members and students will be notified accordingly. All peer helper members will be required to attend our annual Fall Peer Helper Retreat at the Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center near Lanesboro the weekend of October 2-3, 2021. More details will follow late summer.

Time to spend the summer VISITING COLLEGES! Many campuses have opened back up - register on their respective websites for campus tours! The best way to find out if a college is a fit for you is to go to the campus. Applications will open in late August and we will hit the ground running in September doing applications as soon as we are back. Job Shadow - I highly recommend upcoming Seniors and Juniors do a job shadow this summer! Call or email someone that has an interesting job to you, and ask if you can shadow them for a few hours! It's a great way to see what a day in the life really entails. Schedules will be out early summer - watch your email/JMC for details.
