Letter from Superintendent Jeff Apse March Issue 2019

Community Task Force on Facilities Continues to Make Progress A Community Task Force that includes 27 community members from various backgrounds has been meeting since October, 2018, providing their input and feedback on the District’s efforts to develop a comprehensive facility improvement plan. The Task Force is charged with assisting with the development of a long-range facility improvement plan to guide our District’s future facility improvement efforts. They are ultimately charged with developing a recommendation on the plan and the solutions they feel the District should pursue for the School Board to consider. Beginning last spring and extending into the fall, Nexus Solutions, the facility planning firm hired by the District to assist with our planning efforts conducted an assessment of our School District’s facilities. Nexus’ efforts identified more than 100 potential issues and possible solutions for addressing the issues, along with possible solutions for generating revenue to fund the solutions. The total estimated cost to address the issues if we tried to take on everything in the plan is more than $32,000,000. I’ve been asked by some, “hey, I hear the District is looking at a $30,000,000+ referendum.” My response to that is that we have had our facilities assessed, Nexus Solutions did their job, they are supposed to find issues, and they are supposed to pitch solutions for us to consider, and they did just that. While some of the solutions they have helped identify would require support through a vote from our tax payers, some of the potential solutions would not require a vote to implement. Some of the issues and solutions identified are not high priority items, so things we do not necessarily need to pursue today, but are good things to have identified for future planning. We presented the results of our facility assessment along with our first draft of a long range facility improvement plan to our Task Force in December. The presentation to the Task Force also included a review of potential concepts for some solutions (not all 100+ solutions Nexus identified) that could be packaged into a future referendum. The Task Force had an opportunity to review, comment, and critique what was presented to them. The Task Force’s comments prompted a series of considerations for the District which sent us back to the drawing board to explore other ways to solve some of the issues we are exploring solutions for. A revised set of concepts was presented to the Task Force on January 28, 2019. While the revised concepts received positive feedback, we are still in the development phase, and have some work to do before the Task Force is ready to bring final recommendations to the School Board. Along with meeting regularly with our Task Force, we have made an effort to reach out to a variety of different stakeholder groups to both provide them with an update on our progress and for them to offer their thoughts and suggestions. We have met with District staff, students, the St. Charles Lions, our area Booster Clubs (Baseball, Football, and Wrestling), the St. Charles PTO, our area farmers, and most recently area business leaders. Information about our Task Force, including its purpose, the issues they are helping explore solutions for, meeting agendas, meeting minutes, presentations to stakeholder groups, articles, the most recent draft of our facility assessment results, and conceptual drawings of potential solutions are available on the Facility Task Force’s website at: https://www.scschools.net/page/4947. The items with the most recent dates, include the most recent information. You can also find the Task Force’s website by going to the District’s website at www.scschools.net, clicking on the “District” button on the menu at the top of the screen, and clicking on “Facilities Task Force”. If you have questions on the plan we are developing, and where we are at in the process, please ask a Task Force member, call me at the school at (507-932-4420), email me (japse@schs.k12.mn.us), or stop by. Thanks for your continued support of St. Charles Public Schools,

Jeff Apse Superintendent of Schools

The trees were purchased from Jim Whitings Nursery with funds made available from a Winona County SHIP Grant. The apple trees are part of a Farm to School initiative to provide an opportunity for students to pick and prepare the apples and incorporate in our food service program. SHIP (Statewide Health Improvement Partnership) is working to create healthier communities across Minnesota by expanding opportunities for active living, healthy eating and tobacco-free living. Artists in the High School Business Office High School Art students were given a real-life opportunity to commission their talents with the vision of Business Office clients. The Business Office expressed what type of artwork they desired, as real-life clients, and the artists created the pieces accordingly. Read the interviews to find out more about these talented art students.

Alex Torres - Senior

Erin Hongerholt - Senior

Given a broad idea of his Business Office client, Senior, Alex Torres, used watercolors to create the river and birch tree paintings. Although not having used watercolor for very long, Alex shares that it was the best choice for this type of commissioned piece for the client (see photo). Always having a love of art, Alex would sketch with pencil on paper as a kid. Alex’s art hopes to inspire the everyday kid with an “I can do this” attitude. If someone were to say to Alex “there’s no way I could ever do art”, Alex’s response is, “have you tried?”. Future plans for Alex include having a job commissioning his art through clients as he doesn’t enjoy deriving his art from his own ideas.

Senior artist, Erin Hongerholt, has been creating art since elementary school. Erin’s artistic career began with cartoon art where she developed a love of all things artistic and a drive to compete with her sister. Using acrylic paints on canvas, Erin artistically created encouraging words of art for anyone to read as they enter the High School Business Office. Though the visual things around her and the bad handwriting of others Erin was inspired to create her piece (see photo). Erin’s passion for art has driven her to continue creating comic strips and enjoys sharing them with others and hopes they find her storytelling inspiring. Erin’s words of encouragement for others that think they can’t create is, “I didn’t think I could pull this off either.” Erin encourages others to draw everyday and plans to go to college for art. Erin will continue her education at Stout in the Sequential Arts Program.

Mitchell Apse - Junior

Hayley Burkholder - Junior Junior, Hayley Burkholder, has been creating art since 9th grade. Through blending techniques she used acrylic paints on canvas to create her art piece for the Business Office client (see photo). Hayley uses her artistic abilities as therapy and she’s able to concentrate on her art with help of art teacher, Mr. Torres. Art to Hayley is beautiful and she is able to express herself as she makes it her own. Hayley feels the leaves painting she created for the client is the prettiest painting she’s ever done with a black and white illusion painting coming in as a close second. Hayley hopes to inspire others with her art by showcasing it for others to appreciate and hopes to raise funds for the Art Club. With hard work every night, believing in yourself and giving it your all Hayley hopes that others will take the plunge and try art. Hayley hopes to attend RCTC and take art classes while envisioning a small business someday using her creativity.

Using acrylic paints on canvas, Junior, Mitchell Apse, creates a piece that emphasizes the school spirit for anyone that enters the Business Office. From creating drawings to designing the Boys Soccer team logo, Mitchell has always loved art. Art gives him a break during the rigorous days of school. The satisfying, crisp letters in his piece (see photo) are Mitchell’s favorite part of his commissioned piece. A favorite art project that Mitchell created was during his 9th grade impressionism unit when he created his own rendition of a famous painting using his own style and without fine lines. Mitchell encourages others to know that art can be fun because it can be different than other classes and that art can just “happen”. Mitchell hopes to pursue a career in field videography after high school.

Rain Gardens Our rain garden was finished in November and is patiently awaiting Spring! We had three classes out in November to help plant our 60+ plants and mulch. Rain gardens help capture runoff and allow it to soak back into the ground instead of running to the streets and down the storm drains which empty to nearby water bodies. We are also registering the garden as a schoolyard habitat through the national wildlife federation. The rain garden was fully funded by our community engagement grant. The grant aims to combat storm water, which can pollute our local rivers and streams.

Kindergarten Registration Registration for those starting Kindergarten in September 2019 will take place at St. Charles Elementary School on: Friday, April 12, 2019 from 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm Do you have dead markers, highlighters or dry erase markers laying around the house or in your backpack? St. Charles Schools is a registered school with the Crayola ColorCycle Program! Students and community members can drop off any spent markers at the High School or Elementary School and our school takes care of the rest! The Crayola ColorCycle accepts ALL brands of plastic markers, dry erase markers and highlighters. Thank you for your help in keeping them out of landfills!

No regular Kindergarten classes will be in session on this date. This is a great opportunity to meet the Kindergarten teachers, tour the classrooms, and collect important documents such as birth certificates and immunization records. Please notify the Elementary School (932-4910) of your intent to attend Kindergarten Registration. We look forward to meeting you and your child!
