From the Academic and Campus Director Welcome to our November Campus News! This is a very warm welcome for a couple of reasons! It seems that spring is here and soon the weather will be nice and warm.

The second reason is that we have exciting news for the Perth students and campus staff. We are partially opening the Perth campus to classes from the beginning of Session 3.

The reason for this partial and limited opening is that we need to ensure the health and safety of all staff and students.

At this stage this is our primary concern.

We shall be able to welcome back some of our students. Unfortunately, not all classes will be held on campus. Please make sure you carefully check your timetable. It is possible that you will have one or two classes on campus and the other one or two will still be online. It is also likely that some of you will still have all your classes delivered online.

We shall be sharing a training video with our Perth students which outlines the steps you need to take to ensure everyone’s safety, including your own, on campus. Please ensure that you take your time to go through the presentation and understand all the requirements. There will be extra cleaning on campus, and we shall be implementing some hygiene and distancing rules that everyone will need to follow. We hope you agree with us that this is a great first step in moving toward resuming all classes on the Perth campus. Of course, the timing of that will depend on the health advice we receive from authorities in WA. On all three campuses Student services will continue looking after you and you will still need to make an appointment to come and see us if you need help in person. Otherwise we will continue to be available to help you online.

Session 3 commences on 2 November 2020 and we wish you all, our continuing and our new commencing students on all three campuses, a very successful Session. We hope you managed to have a short break between Session 2 and Session 3, and you are now refreshed and ready to start or resume your studies. Remember to regularly check your SCU emails and the SCU website for any updates and news. We wish you a successful Session 3 and remember to contact us if we can help you in any way.

Learning Advisor Dear students Academic misconduct is a breach of academic integrity which can result in serious penalties. But, did you know that at SCU it does not matter whether students deliberately or unintentionally engage in academic misconduct?

In other words, intention is not relevant in deciding whether to report a case to the Academic Integrity Officer or not. And, did you know that the impacts of academic misconduct can reach beyond your time studying at SCU? Yes, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right! It is becoming increasingly common that graduates are asked to disclose their record in relation to academic misconduct to prospective employers. Why? Because instances of academic misconduct are now viewed as a negative indication of oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s character. Do not gamble with your future. Remember that support is always available to you in developing your academic skills further to avoid academic integrity breaches. Do not hesitate to get in contact at diarossides@scu.edu.au.

How can you practice academic Integrity to avoid serious penalties?

1. Never share your assignment with a class mate. If someone copies your writing, you can both be penalised, so please make sure that you do not send an assignment to anyone, and do not allow others to photograph your writing.

2. Use Turnitin strategically. After submitting, look at the similarity and make changes to your assignment if needed. You can resubmit several times before the due date.

3. When using sources such as journal articles, always make sure that you are not copying and pasting directly. Make sure that you reference each and every source that you use.

4. Never let another person write your assignment for you. This is absolutely unacceptable and will be severely penalised.

Student Welfare Counsellor Dear students, Hi, I am Vanesse your SCU Perth Campus Counsellor. I am passionate about working with students and promoting good mental health and wellbeing at SCU. As your counsellor, my role is to listen, recognise strengths and vulnerabilities and invite growth. I can help you with managing stress, anxiety, depression and other emotional, relationship or family issues.

Fun fact: Perth is a beautiful city and presents many opportunities to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is being present in the moment, and observing your thoughts and feelings with a kind attitude. I have been collecting local images to appreciate where we are, and utilize our surroundings to mindfully ground ourselves. I would like to work on a Mindfulness Album for our campuses.

If you need help with your academic or study skills, please make an appointment with your tutors or with our Campus Learning Advisor, Dia Rossides. She will be able and happy to advise and help you.

This album will consist of mindfulness images identified by our students (wherever you are).

Research shows that patting a pet reduces your blood pressure and eases stress as hormones related to stress and anxiety are released when you connect with a pet. Career Edge Program

SCU provides the Career Edge Program for all students to join. This program includes 3 levels of content to equip students with knowledge, skills, and confidence to enter positions within the Australian business context. Students are then eligible to participate in an in-company small group project (after 2 years) and a 10 -12 week internship experience (after the entire 3 years of the program).

For the In-Company project, we had 26 students participated from all 3 campuses. One student stated: "Overall it was a wonderful experience. A key outcome in my opinion was: learning to work in a diverse team of members from different educational backgrounds. We had five members from various fields and we were able to utilise each of our strengths to together complete the project." - Student In relation to the Internship experiences, since last month, we now have 5 students who have been placed in accounting and software development internships. We have another two students who are waiting for an outcome from their internship interview. We would like to congratulate these 7 students and wish them luck! We will also provide feedback from these students once their internships are complete.

Each year, the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour celebrates the heroes and stories intrinsically linked to the Victoria Racing Club’s 159-year old Melbourne Cup race and its contribution to the nation's historical and cultural heritage.

The 18-carat gold Lexus Melbourne Cup trophy visits various destinations in an effort to unite communities by engaging councils, schools, hospitals, aged-care homes and racing groups in events to raise funds for local causes. For the first time in its 17-year history, this year’s Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour will be a combination of physical and virtual visits to communities across Australia.

The People’s Cup will visit 27 destinations as part of this year’s exclusively domestic schedule.

Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed by Canadians and other members of the Commonwealth since the end of the First World War in order to remember all those who fought and died in the line of duty to keep us free. It was originally called ‘’Armistice Day” to commemorate armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 am - on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The poppy is the symbol of Remembrance Day.
