Tray columns are one of the most widely used types of distillation columns. It is also sometimes referred to as a plate column. The process of separating the number of trays and steps in the column is designed for the desired accuracy and difficulty. The height of the column also determines the number of steps. How Trays are Used in Process Plants After entering the liquid in a cross flow or countercurrent flow, the liquid flows across the column and tray. A reboiler located at the bottom of the tower separates the stream into vapor that returns to the column and simultaneously forms a liquid product stream. The vapor moves upward through the tray and get in touch with the downward flowing fluid stream. This process allows separation. Vapor enters a condenser at the top of the column. The condensed stream is divided into an overhead product stream or distillate, as well as a reflux stream that returns to the top of the column. Cross flow Trays Versus Countercurrent Trays The tray is used as a type of holdup for a portion of the liquid through which the vapor flows to achieve the vapor – liquid mass transfer that is required for separation. A cross flow tray uses liquid that travels sideways in the tray and in a vertical down comer. The vapor passes through the pores or into the tray and into the flow of liquid. Countercurrent trays, also known as dual-flow trays, do not use down comers. Consequently, upward flowing vapor and downward flowing liquid must compete to pass through the holes of the tray. This is why cross-tray trays are used more often in commercial practice, due to their wider operating range and higher separation efficiency.
