Deep dive with massive schools of fish Your Open Water Diver certificate allows you to dive with a certified diver up to a maximum depth of 18 m. While there is plenty to see and enjoy within these depth limitations during scuba diving in Andaman, people always want to go deeper, to satisfy their curiosity. Going deeper is not as straightforward as a simple descent to a depth deeper than 18m, you are subjecting yourself to higher partial pressures of Nitrogen, which makes you susceptible to Nitrogen narcosis. Additionally, dive planning becomes extremely important as it allows you to safely stay at depth. It is important to remember that part of being a responsible diver is to dive within the limits of your training, certification, experience, comfort, and ability. An integral part of your diving journey is to explore new underwater environments and to take part in dives that challenge you.

The SSI Deep Diving Course opens the door to many new and exciting dive sites including deeper wrecks, reefs, wall dives, and more. Through this course, you will be taught how to plan and execute a deep dive with a higher degree of comfort, by obtaining a better understanding of the factors involved in deep diving, all under the supervision of your SSI Instructor.

Dive Fitness and Safety

As all Scuba divers are aware, diving can be a strenuous activity particularly if one is unfit.

The deeper you go underwater, the more strain you are subjecting your body to during your scuba diving course in India. As part of any SSI educational program before any inwater training, you are required to fill a medical questionnaire. You may request the dive center to email you a copy of the questionnaire before you arrive in Havelock. In case you are suffering from any of the conditions mentioned in the questionnaire, a medical fitness certificate has to be issued by a physician, ideally a barometric physician. Given the weather several people get a cold or congestion, while you can take decongestants to allow you to dive, we recommend avoiding the dive as in case the effect of the medicine wears off in the middle of the dive you risk getting a reverse squeeze.

Course Work and Theory Your dive center will issue your online learning materials, which you can access online as well as offline with the MySSI app. You can complete the theory and review section before reaching Havelock. The Deep Diving Specialty final exam can be given online or on the app. This course aims to provide divers with the knowledge and skills needed to safely conduct open water dives to depths between 18 to 40 meters. Dive planning and management of partial pressures of gases based on the mixture you are breathing as taught to you in the Open Waters course will be revised for scuba in Andaman. During the dive, you will be taught how to maintain neutral buoyancy and stay at a particular depth for your safety stop as well as how to deploy an SMB. You will also undergo a nitrogen narcosis test. The specialty requires you to complete a minimum of 3 dives at depths greater than 18m to get comfortable dealing with these conditions and challenges.

Wall dive The Wall One of the most popular deep dive sites in Havelock is “The Wall”. As the name suggests it’s a sheer cliff with the shallowest end at about 10-12m and the deepest part is around 55m, which is outside the realm of recreational diving. The top of the wall houses a vibrant reef which is home to schools of snappers and fusiliers, groups of Moorish idols, Bannerfish, Groupers, and Butterflyfish, with giant Trevally, Barracuda, and Napoleon Wrasse hanging around. Owing to the presence of unpredictable currents and changing tides, this site provides an enriching and challenging experience for divers of all levels during scuba diving at Havelock Island.

Johnny’s Gorge The site named after a local diver (who is very much alive and continues to dive) is a circular reef split by a gorge. The top of the Reef greets you at a depth of 20 meters and then drops off to a Maximum Depth of 34 meters. The reef has several Giant barrel sponges, which are hundreds of years old, and have grown so large that some can even encompass a diver. The reef is home to schools of colorful fish, Sweetlips, and Snappers with groups of Triggerfish scattered about and Barracudas lurking about. In the sandy patches of the reef, you can find resting White Tip reef sharks and a variety of rays; Devil Rays, Eagle Rays, and Manta Rays. The presence of sharks and rays makes this site a favorite amongst divers.

Diving at Havelock Jackson’s Bar Named after a local diver, this is a giant plateau rising from the ocean floor. The shelf itself is at a depth of about 25 meters with the sides sloping down to sandbanks at the depth of 30 odd meters. Resting under the sand, flying around the reef are numerous Blue Spotted Sting Rays. Along with the usual denizens of the reef, you can find an occasional White Tip Reef Shark. The Plateau itself is not barren, with plenty of coral rocks, soft corals, and sponges providing shelter to Snappers, Parrotfish, Moorish Idols, Sweetlips, big groupers, and even bigger Napoleon Wrasse. You can observe those mind-blowing creatures on your own during your deep-sea diving in Andaman.

Dixon's Pinnacles Again, named after a local diver, (Johnny, Dixon, and Jackson are brothers), these are three underwater pinnacles that also act as cleaning stations. The shallowest end of the pinnacles is at a depth of 16 meters and the deepest end goes down to 35 meters. Each pinnacle is covered by a multitude of vibrant hard and soft corals, housing large schools of Surgeonfish, Batfish, and Snappers. The most popular fish at the pinnacles are juvenile Emperor fish. Above the pinnacles giant Trevally and Barracuda circle hunting for prey.

At the deeper end, you can find a group of Napoleon wrasse.
