“Among the gifts of this fine program are: outstanding theological and spiritual resources for personal and ministerial growth; companions at the same stage of life’s journey; and thoughtful guidance in interpreting and preparing for the Church of the 21st century.” – Sandra M. Schneiders, IHM,

New Directions aims for a holistic sabbatical experience: spiritual, social, physical, and intellectual. The program offers a timely opportunity to discern and articulate new directions for professional ministry and personal development. One’s outlook can be immensely enriched and broadened in JST’s culturally rich environment. Students from more than 40 countries attend the school. Sabbatical participants enjoy the opportunity to befriend younger students, the next generation of ministers. Participants engage in workshops specifically designed for them and choose from courses available through JST and the Graduate Theological Union. Sabbatical cohorts numbering 10-15 promote engaging interpersonal relationships and stimulating diversity. Participants can enroll for one or two semesters. The school offers housing for students.
“ The blend of solitude and community, study and leisure was perfect for me! I loved the interaction with the faculty and students from so many different countries and cultures.”

“ I’ve received a new pair of eyes with which to see myself, others, the world and God differently. The Sabbatical was like a contemplative journey, gazing at God’s face so that one learns to gaze at the world with God’s eyes. Through the various program components, New Directions was ultimately an experience of receiving a new heart– a heart of flesh not stone.”
- Anthony Pernia, SVD ( former Superior General) Philippines
