editor’s note Welcome to the first edition of Tipton Life. We are excited about our new magazine because it represents a partnership between Tipton Lakes Community Association and Home News Enterprises (HNE), local publisher of The Republic.

Our new, top quality quarterly magazine will focus on useful news and information for all Tipton Lakes’ residents and property owners.

By utilizing the professional staff at HNE, such as editors, journalists, photographers, printers, etc., many of whom live in Tipton Lakes, we will be able to communicate Tipton Lakes Community Association news and other useful information to further enhance the quality of life in our community. The total cost of each edition of Tipton Life will be covered by HNE through advertising revenue; therefore your homeowner’s assessment will not be affected.

Each edition will highlight our amenities and what we value most in our community. In this edition, be sure to read on page 30 what your neighbors are saying about the pedestrian path system. As one of our most valued amenities, the pedestrian path system keeps us connected and healthy.

Design Review Modifications Process

A

key component to the success of the Association’s ability to uphold our mission is the design review process.

Section 3.02(iv) of the Association’s declaration says, “Another purpose of the Association is to regulate design and construction throughout the Common Areas and Properties during the initial development stages and afterwards, in order to promote a high quality, aesthetically pleasing, architecturally sound environment and to generally maintain and enhance property values throughout the Properties.”

Many who build their homes here are introduced to the design process during new construction. Complete plans are presented to the master developer, Tipton Lakes Co., for approval prior to construction. Once the home design is approved and the home is built, all exterior changes require approval of the Design Review Modifications Committee (DRMC), which is administered by Tipton Lakes Community Association.

The Association has attempted to streamline the design review process and avoid creating unnecessary paperwork.

However, contemplated improvements must be approved by the DRMC prior to construction. To aid the Association and its members with this process, the Association developed a set of design review guidelines. In preparing these guidelines, the Association leaned heavily on the experience of more mature planned communities. Each section was added because of a challenging area that developed in an existing association. Our intention was for the guidelines not to be viewed as limiting our members’ freedom to act, but viewed as the best means available to protect property values.

Design The following are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions: What is the Design Review Modifications Committee?

The Design Review Modifications Committee is a standing committee of the Association’s Board of Directors. The committee’s duties include to “review and approve, modify or disapprove, within 45 days, all written applications of owners and of the Association for improvements or additions to lots, living units or common areas.” The work of this important committee of the Association aids in the establishment and maintenance of high-quality design standards for structures and landscaping throughout our community.

What types of projects are considered exterior modifications?

An exterior modification includes any change to the home or the landscaping. Examples include but are not limited to exterior painting, decks, roof replacement, room additions, landscape changes and swimming pools.

How do I obtain approval for my project?

The first step is to complete an application for modification. The form is available at the Association Office or online at www.tiptonlakes.com. Complete the form and attach photos, scale drawings and sample materials as required and described as part of the application process.

When does the Design Review Modifications Committee meet?

The committee meets during the second week of every month. All applications received by the first Monday of the month are guaranteed review at that month’s meeting, as long as all required materials are submitted with the application. The winter months generally see less activity than the spring, summer and fall seasons. If you are planning an upcoming project, now is a great time to get your project approved by the committee. Approvals are valid for up to one year from the date of approval.

Whom can I call with questions about my project?

The Association staff is available to assist you with completing your application. Lisa Beiriger administers the application process for the members. She is available to answer your questions and assist you through the application process. She can be reached at the Association Office by calling 342-8522 or by email at lisa.beiriger@tiptonlakes.com.

If you are considering a change to the exterior of your home or property, have reviewed the guidelines and have lingering questions, our best advice is to contact the Association Office for assistance. We will make every effort to assist you through the process, answer your questions and provide feedback in a timely manner. We recognize that the process may not be a perfect one.

However, the Association strives to provide assistance that minimizes confusion or frustration as we partner with our members to uphold our mission.

Staff Spotlight Meet Lisa Beiriger, TLCA Administrative Assistant

Chances are when you call the Association Office or when you walk in the front door, you are greeted by Lisa Beiriger, our Administrative Assistant. She has been with the office since October 2004 and just recently celebrated her 10th anniversary with the Association.

Besides answering the phones and greeting our members, Lisa serves the Association by administering the design review application process, including providing assistance to our members with the application process and gathering all supporting information that is required as part of each application review.

“Lisa’s smiling face and friendly approach, both in person and on the phone, help our members feel welcome at the Association Office,” said John Malina, Board President.

Lisa and her family moved to Columbus in 2004 from Ohio. Lisa and her husband, Paul, have three grown boys and Ozzy, their family dog. When not at the office, Lisa enjoys spending time with her family and traveling. A recent trip to Alaska was one of her favorite trips. Lisa and Paul are enjoying their time as empty-nesters and plan to do more traveling.

Volunteer Service is Key to Operations As we look forward to 2015, the Elections Committee will form just after the first of the year and begin the process of identifying candidates to run for the Board of Directors. Volunteer board members play an important role in the governance of our operations.

Board duties (as outlined in the Association covenants) include: • Enforce the governing documents.

• Prepare the annual budgets and financial statements.

• Set the annual assessments, send written notice to members, take prompt action to collect assessments.

• Supervise all officers, agents and employees.

• Secure a master casualty and liability policy.

• Reconstruct, replace and repair common area facilities as the need arises.

Board members lead several committees in order to fulfill their duties. These include: • Finance Committee.

• Lake Maintenance Committee.

• Design Review Modifications Committee.

• Covenants Committee.

• Grounds Committee.

• Community Relations/Welcoming Committee.

Talented and dedicated volunteers are always encouraged to serve the Association. Service on one of the committees is a great way to get to know the Association and how it operates. ith Indian summer in the rearview mirror, it’s time to prep for the coming winter chill. Whether you’re a firsttime homeowner or are familiar with the drill, area contractors say taking a few precautions to winterize your home in the fall can save you a lot of headaches come springtime.

It’s usually best to start with the simple stuff first, such as disconnecting exterior hoses before the first hard freeze, says Dave Dietrich, Business Manager with Lohmeyer Plumbing in Columbus.

While you’re removing hoses, look for leaks and drips, especially around the spigot. If you’re unsure whether the spigot is leaking, simply place a bucket underneath to see if you collect any water. What may seem like a minuscule drip can cause big problems if it isn’t fixed.

“It isn’t so much the dripping water that’s the problem,” Dietrich says. “It’s when that water freezes that the potential for serious problems arises.”

As water freezes, it expands and acts as a plug, but when it thaws it can cause the pipe to rupture.

Generally, when frozen lines thaw and rupture, the damage is going to be inside the living space of the home, Dietrich says.

Covering outdoor A/C units is beneficial for keeping out small debris and weather, says Bill Stott, owner of Advantage Heating & Air Conditioning. You just have to remember to take the cover off come springtime, so the unit doesn’t overheat.

However, if you have an outdoor heat pump, leave it uncovered, he says. Typically outdoor units are designed to be in weather all the time, and covering a heat pump can interfere with its operation.

ready for winter Making sure all flue vents are open and free of obstructions, like wasp or critter nests, is crucial for proper airflow throughout the home, Stott says. “Check for any loose wires, insulation or anything where an animal can chew on your outdoor lines,” he says. “Make sure they’re covered or wrapped with something that can’t be penetrated by a rodent.”

Permanent yard sprinklers and irrigation systems are tremendously convenient during the spring and summer, but just like other outdoor plumbing they need attention, too.

“A lot of people dealing with them for the first time who have never had them before don’t realize they have to be winterized as well,” Dietrich says. “They have to be blown out, otherwise come springtime it’s a lot of repair.”

When prepping a pool house for the cold, make sure all the drain and water lines and fixtures are properly winterized, he says. As you double-check that all water lines are clear, don’t forget to check the toilet bowl, he cautions.

“If you leave water in the bowl of the toilet, but turn the water off, that toilet will blow up,” he says. “So it’s

There are also potential issues that can arise in exterior walls that contain plumbing, such as a bathroom sink or shower valve, Dietrich says. It’s essential to make sure these areas have proper insulation because wind can penetrate vinyl siding and get to the piping.

“Wind is your biggest enemy during the winter months,” he says. “The driving chill will push into any cracks or crevices, making exposed plumbing vulnerable.

Last year was a good test for exposing weak areas like that, so if you didn’t have a problem last year odds are you won’t this year. That’s not to definitively say it couldn’t happen, but it’s less likely.”

Another area of concern is the garage. Typically, the garage space is not heated and will get colder as the temperature drops, Dietrich says. It’s a bad idea to leave your garage door cracked so pets may come and go at their leisure, because you are not only losing valuable heat, but you’re leaving any water appliances in the garage, such as water softeners, vulnerable to potential damage or failure.

Winterization checklist Consider adding the following items to your winterization checklist and ensure your home is in tiptop shape for the fall and winter seasons. o Update your window treatments. Summer’s venetian blinds and sheer curtain panels won’t keep the frigid air from creeping in on a cold night. Consider switching to a denser curtain fabric for the winter months to keep your home feeling cozy and keep heating bills low. o Schedule appliance check-ups. Your HVAC system, air ducts and hot water heater should be checked by a licensed professional to ensure all elements are in good shape for the change in weather — especially if any appliances worked overtime during summer months. o Don’t forget the attic. Check for leaks in the roof, possible cracks in attic windows and insufficient insulation. Doors and windows need extra help to hold heat inside your home. Inspect all door and window perimeters for cracks or tears in your current weather stripping. You also can add a second layer of protection with temporary weather stripping applied overtop your existing seals. o Deep clean and de-clutter. Thoroughly clean your home’s nooks and crannies inside and out. Ensure electrical cords, outlets and air vents are dust- and clutter-free; tidy up garages and storage areas; and clear any debris from your home’s exterior, especially around vents and drains.

ready for winter ture in the garage stays above freezing,” he says. “But prolonged cold or exposure to blowing wind will cool the appliances off quicker.”

Just as outdoor lines can expand and shrink with freezing and thawing, the same principle applies to water appliances, Dietrich says.

If you have a fireplace with a brick chimney, it’s important to inspect it as well, says Pete Kaiser, owner of Pete the Sweep in Columbus.

“A chimney is an exterior finger of bricks sticking up in the air making it vulnerable to the freeze and thaw in wintertime,” he says. “This can cause the bricks and mortar to swell and crack as the temperature changes.”

Finding cracks in your chimney early on can save on major repairs down the road, he says. Also, if you use your fireplace frequently, such as every weekend or throughout the week, it’s important to have it inspected and cleaned annually, Kaiser says.

“If there’s an eighth of an inch of creosote buildup on the damper, then it’s probably time to get it cleaned,” he says.

For those fortunate enough to escape to a warmer locale during the winter months, Dietrich recommends not turning off the heat in your home.

Dialing back the thermostat is OK, but just don’t set it too low, he says. You need to have some heat in the home that will offset the chill that is trying to come in from the outdoors, he says.

“You aren’t going to have air circulating with people walking around,” he says. “There won’t be any natural movements to keep cold pockets from developing throughout the home.”

He also recommends shutting off the water as a precaution to prevent freezing and thawing that could potentially rupture piping, he says.

“No one wants the phone call that there’s water running out of their front door,” he says.

Toasty tips To help curb your energy costs this winter, check out these tips offered by Duke Energy and the U.S. Department of Energy: Change is good. Make sure you have your furnace inspected regularly to ensure it is running at its optimum efficiency. Also change your furnace’s filter regularly.

Dial it back. To cut energy costs by about 10 percent, reduce your thermostat setting by 10 to 15 degrees for eight hours each day.

Caulk and seal. Make sure cracks and crevices are sealed with caulk or weather stripping to prevent warm air from escaping your home. Doors and windows are generally the most vulnerable areas. Also check to make sure the flue damper on your fireplace is snug.

Fan it. Set your ceiling fan to operate in a clockwise direction so that it pushes warm air down and circulates it throughout the room. And don’t forget to shut it off when you leave the room.

This event on Dec. 13 takes place at The Ridge for 25 local families who have been nominated by Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. Indiana winters can be cold, long … and fun at Tipton Lakes Instead of hibernating this winter, plan some fun activities right in your own neighborhood: Sledding on the “big hill” at the marina. Although unplanned and actually started as a construction pile of dirt, the “big hill” at the marina is a fun winter activity for those who like to sled. Pack up the hot chocolate and enjoy your morning or afternoon taking on the “big hill” at the Tipton Lakes Marina.

Winter wonderland nature walk. There is nothing more beautiful than a new snow hanging on the bare tree branches. There are several nature trails in the Tipton Lakes area that are beautiful in winter and every other season. If you don’t know where the nature trails are, stop in the Association Office and we can show you the locations.

Need a hangout for the kids on an unexpected snow day? Gather your friends and rent the lower level at the Association Office. Movies, crafts and snacks in a new location can help the day go faster and provide a needed change of pace. Plus, we are within walking distance, so you don’t have to dig the car out first. Call the Association Office at 3428522 for rental fees and information.

Try snow shoeing and cross country skiing. It’s not only great exercise, but a fun way to get out of the house and avoid the dreaded cabin fever.

Stay safe Many people love to get outside in the winter for exercise and recreation. But before heading out in the snow and cold temperatures, it pays to be prepared. Here are some tips for keeping safe in the winter cold:

Make sure your family understands how the cold can be very dangerous because of hypothermia and frostbite due to prolonged exposure. Do not allow children to play in the snow for longer than three or four hours at a time.

Over-exertion is also an important safety concern for adults.

Unfortunately, each year people have heart attacks while they’re out in the snow because they overwork themselves. When shoveling snow, make sure you take an occasional break from this type of hard work.

Before letting your kids go outside, tell them how to stay warm and see to it that they are wearing the proper clothing (including hats and gloves). Also make sure you know where they are playing (not by a frozen creek or lake unless you are sure it is solid).

Sledding and skiing accidents can and do occur each year, so just make sure you tell your kids to use common sense and to be careful. Supervising youngsters is really the best way to do this, but if you have independent teenagers you won’t be invited to the slopes. Encourage them to make good decisions and always think things through.

The first and foremost key to having a good experience outside in the cold, winter snow is to stay warm and dry.

The best way to do this is to dress in layers. Wool is definitely better than cotton at wicking away moisture from the skin, so if you have wool socks or a sweater to put on, wear them both. (Polystyrene is another material that works quite well.) Moisture doesn’t only come from the snow, it comes from your sweat, so it’s important that you do not overheat and get too sweaty and then cool down.

DANGER: Don’t find yourself on thin ice With winter approaching, ice will soon be forming on our lakes.

When ice forms and repeatedly thaws due to temperature variations, the remaining ice becomes very unsafe. In this part of the country we seldom have sustained freezing temperatures that will form ice to a thickness that is safe to support people and animals.

In previous years there have been incidents on Tipton Lakes where animals had to be rescued after falling through thin ice. In addition, in past years, reports have been made to the Association Office that adults and children were walking on unsafe ice in the canals and on the lakes.

All residents should be mindful of the dangers of walking on ice for themselves and their pets. If members observe others who do not understand this danger or ignore this caution, they are encouraged to speak to the members who are in potential danger and report such incidents to the Association Office at 342-8522.

Out for a stroll Pedestrian pathways keep Tipton residents on the move

By Jennifer Willhite l photos by joe harpRing If you ask the residents of Tipton Lakes about the one amenity they enjoy most, they’re likely to say the pedestrian pathways.

Diane Michael has lived at Tipton Lakes for more than 20 years and says the pedestrian paths are something all the residents love. Michael had young children when she first moved in and says she appreciated the peace of mind knowing her kids could use the pathways instead of the street.

“It was one of the many selling points for me, because my kids could bike, Rollerblade, and visit their friends easily,” she says.

Now that her children are grown, the retired elementary school teacher says she still uses the pathways four

times each week to walk and jog. They are a unifying amenity, she says, that makes it easy to get to know one’s neighbors. Every day there’s someone on the paths, which makes you feel secure using them, she says.

“Now, I would not move to any place that didn’t have sidewalks and beautiful paths,” she says. “It’s just such a part of my life; it’s one of the things I would look for.”

The meandering, winding nature of the paths was intentional by design, says Beth Parkhurst, General Manager for the Tipton Lakes community.

“When the development first went in, the roadways were designed in a strategic way to slow down traffic,” she says. “The pathways outlined the roads to offer residents a more scenic walk through the neighborhoods.”

The nearly 10 miles of pedestrian paths, which include nature trails and four underpasses, are intended to maximize pedestrian mobility and lead people to common areas where they can enjoy the amenities, Parkhurst says.

In the spring of 2006, one of three nature trails was established near the marina between the Blackhawk and Pintail neighborhoods as part of an Eagle Scout project, Parkhurst says. A few years later, the nature trail was enhanced with a bridge and bench as part of another Eagle Scout project.

Not only is the beauty of the nature trails appealing to residents, but the trails help preserve the surrounding natural environment, including trees, streams and wildlife habitats that are unique to the Tipton Lakes area.

When Lisa Brueggemann moved to Tipton Lakes in 1989, her sons were still very young. She says she wore out the wheels on the stroller walking the pathways with her sons, and now that they’re grown she walks her dog.

She says the pathways are paramount to the vitality of the neighborhoods.

“I’ve walked every square inch of the pathways,” she says. “People use them for everything, from biking to

walking, and mom groups walk them all the time. We even have people from the outside who drive in and walk on them.”

Since many residents, like Brueggemann, use the paths to walk their dogs, Tipton Lakes installed six pet waste stations along the pathways this past spring. The stations are strategically placed close to the parks and along the most popular sections of the paths so owners may pick up a bag at one and then deposit the collected waste at the next station, Parkhurst says.

“The stations are given attention once each week for disposal and replenishing the baggies,” she says. “The implementation of the pet waste stations has reduced the number of calls regarding disposal issues.”

One of the most popular sections of the paths is a two-mile stretch that starts at the marina, leads out to Tipton Lakes Boulevard, down along Goeller Boulevard across the dam and then cuts back onto Tipton Lakes Boulevard, Parkhurst says.

Pedestrian pathways During the summer he walks about five miles each day.

“The scenery is so beautiful it makes for an enjoyable walk,” the Edinburgh Middle School science teacher says.

Resident Angie Turner has lived in three different homes within Tipton Lakes over the past 18 years.

Turner, who works as a registered nurse at Columbus Regional Hospital, says the paths are an amenity she would not give up.

“It’s one of the reasons I live here,” she says. “My kids have grown up in Tipton Lakes, so I started out with the strollers, and then we graduated to the little bikes. I’ve ventured to every single playground in the area and now,

as an older person, I’m still truckin’ around the trails.”

In a survey conducted by Tipton Lakes a few years ago, residents were asked to rank the amenities by importance.

“We thought they would say lakes,” Parkhurst says. “And it’s interesting because the paths edged ahead of them.”

Turner says it is difficult to pick a favorite pathway or location because they’re all so beautiful. Part of the appeal, she says, is the scenery changes with the seasons.

“You would have to pry me out of the area,” she says.

“I love it so much here.”

Lake Maintenance North Dam Some members have contacted the Association Office inquiring about the excavation work recently completed at the base of the North Dam. For many years the grassy slope between the base of the North Dam and Goeller Boulevard has been a traditionally wet area. Wet weather conditions make this area very difficult to mow. The subsoil structure in this area is very heavy

clay. Surface water does not naturally percolate deep into the soil. Many years ago drain tiles were buried in this area to help remove the surface water accumulation. With time some of the tiles became filled with silt such that the water would not drain away.

The recent excavation removed stopped up drain tiles and added additional trenches and tile to improve the drainage.

Lighting the way When used correctly, holiday lighting can definitely boost your home’s curb appeal. Here are a few tips for making your home festive without going over the top. l Accentuate. Add some holiday atmosphere to the exterior by lighting specific areas of the house, such as the entryway or across bushes and shrubs. The key is to draw attention and complement the area, not exploit it. l Horizontal versus vertical. Horizontal lights are best when you want to enhance your home’s exterior. Use horizontal lights to outline the exterior, such as across gutters or trim. Use vertical lighting sparingly, such as when framing entryways. l Window dressing. Instead of outlining every window with exterior string lights, how about shining from the inside out? Icicle lights hung along the inside of the window frame create a subtle, soft ambience. You can further accentuate interior windowsills with frosted ornaments, faux snow, a crèche or holidaythemed statues. l Pick a color. When using lighting to accentuate your home’s exterior, it’s best to stick with a single color, such as blue, white or green. Adding too many colors into the mix can be distracting and a bit overwhelming. l Make it match. When using extension cords, try to match them to the environment. For example, if you’re stringing lights in your bushes, use a green extension cord so it will blend in.

Holiday Lights With so many types and styles of outdoor lighting to choose from, it can be difficult to decide which may best suit your needs. Consider these recommendations from the DIY Network: l Make sure the lights are waterproof. Water-resistant and waterproof lights rated for outdoor use are the best way to go to ensure your decorations endure any adverse, wet winter weather. Likewise, make sure any extension cords and connecters are also rated for outdoor use. l Play it safe. To avoid any accidents for yourself or your guests, make sure walkways and frequently traveled areas are free of cords. If you must have cords in those areas, make sure they are taped down or otherwise out of the way. l Net it. When lighting areas with a lot of bushes or shrubs, meshed net lighting is the best way to go. Not only do you not have to bother with weaving the lights in, out and around, but the net ensures equal coverage for the entire area. l Think small. Miniature lights are great for outlining the perimeter of your home and property. Reserve larger bulb lights for evergreens and rope lighting for fencing and posts. l LED versus incandescent. Although incandescent lights may be brighter, if you’re looking for longevity and energy efficiency LEDs are the best way to go. The initial cost may make you cringe, but if you can get up to three seasons’ use out of them, they’re worth the extra dough.

Assessments Fund Future Needs hen you mail your assessment payment each quarter, you are not only funding current operating expenses for the Association, but also setting aside a savings account to offset future funding needs.

For example, Repair and Replacement Reserves made up nearly 23 percent of your 2013 General Assessment each quarter. This meant that approximately $34.82 of each General Assessment quarterly payment made in 2013 was set aside for future repair and replacement costs.

Reserves serve the Association as a savings account by gradually and routinely setting aside funds for future needs related to current assets. By year-end 2014 an estimated $984,297 has been set aside in the General Reserve Fund. General Reserves include our lakes and dams, marina equipment and docks, entry signs, street signs, pedestrian paths, cluster mailboxes, office building and equipment, maintenance garage, truck and tree replacements. Clusters have various reserve accounts as well, mostly offsetting

future tree replacement costs.

The Association’s Finance Committee takes a careful look each year at reserve funding and expense levels, recommending changes to the next year’s budget. Reserve amounts are based on remaining useful life, projected interest income and future costs.

This detailed study will help determine if replacement calculations are on target.

In some ways, however, the Finance Committee’s work in this area requires a crystal ball. While not an exact science, the Finance Committee strives to set reasonable reserve funding goals that will allow minimal additional funding when the replacement or repair comes due. This allows all members to contribute, little by little, to replacement funds as they utilize the current assets and helps the Association and its members minimize the need for special assessments.

Under Dan Slattery’s leadership, as our Association Treasurer, the Finance Committee is currently working on recommending updated guidelines to the board to aid the Association in determining adequate reserve funding.

Canine competitors Doggie ’Lympics promotes fun and games to raise money for a good cause

By Jennifer Willhite l photos by Tasha Dawson If the inaugural Doggie ’Lympics, hosted by Tipton Lakes to benefit the Community Animal Rescue Effort, is any indication, it may be well on its way to becoming an annual fundraising event for the nonprofit organization.

The volunteer-based CARE program promotes spaying and neutering of pets and works to reduce euthanasia rates in Bartholomew and surrounding counties by finding foster homes for dogs and cats in shelters.

“The more altered animals there are in the community, the less the shelter is going to see coming in,” says Ashley Anderson, CARE president.

The estimated $3,000 raised at this year’s event is being disbursed to support CARE’s foster program, medical costs and its spay/neuter program, Anderson says. She and her husband, Travis, came up with the idea for the free event.

Frustrated with being unable to include his 2-year-old pit bull mix, Batman, while competing in area

triathlons, Travis was determined to create an interactive event for dogs and their owners.

Discussions about hosting such an event began last January, and on Sept. 13 the inaugural Doggie ’Lympics was held at the Tipton Lakes marina with several canine participants of varying sizes and their owners.

“I think the funniest moments were the dogs that weren’t cooperating,” Ashley Anderson says, “because we all have had those times with our dogs.”

The 11 a.m. opening ceremony offered the dogs and their owners the chance to get to know one another.

Event organizers set up a fenced dog park, sponsored

by MI Homes, where the pooches could get off their leashes for a while and expend some energy before the games began.

“Dogs are social beings,” Anderson says. “I don’t think some of the dogs that were there had ever been around other dogs.”

The dogs were divided into three classes of small, medium and large for each of the more than half dozen events.

Ruth Goode, owner of Pawsitive Energy Dog Training & Agility, created the obstacle course, which required the dogs to go through a series of jumps and tunnels and navigate cones.

“I designed the course so the training would be very minimal,” Goode says. “The goal was to make the whole thing simple enough that a pet dog with little training could still be successful.”

Besides the obstacle course, the dogs also participated in a water retrieval, which required them to swim out to designated cones, retrieve a toy and come back; outfield catch, where they’d retrieve a tennis ball and bring it back to their owners; and Frisbee Expo, designed to see how many Frisbees the dogs could catch.

There were two other unique events. Marathon Down was a three-round competition, which focused on the dog’s ability to stay still and lying down despite increased distractions as the rounds progressed.

And then there was the Dress ’Em Up Relay.

“There were two stacks of clothes,” says Tasha Dawson, who works in media and public relations for CARE. “You would take your dog to one stack and see how many items of clothing you could get on the dog, then go to the next stack and add more clothes. The dog had to have at least three items that stayed on by the end of the round.”

By the time the games ended at 3 p.m. there were nine winners per event from each of the three categories. Once their scores were tallied, first, second and third places overall were awarded. There was even a Mr. Congeniality award, given to an Australian shepherd named Ollie.

“Every dog that won a category got a medal,” Dawson says. “And the overall top three winners got a gift basket with treats, toys, pooper scoopers, etc.”

Doggie ’Lympics The dogs, their owners and other guests also had the opportunity to peruse the canine-focused vendors who were on hand, including Dressed to the K9’s, Tailwaggers (groomers) and Yo Mama Frozen Yogurt, which supplied doggie yogurt for the fourlegged competitors.

A couple of months prior to the event, the participating dogs and their owners took part in two training events to help prepare. And despite a little apprehension about the course being a bit too much, Goode says everything turned out great.

Under normal circumstances, such as with formal training classes, it takes about eight weeks of foundational training before a dog is introduced to obstacles, Goode says. In this situation it was more about slightly exposing dogs who hadn’t had a lot of training to what they’d be doing, she says. The other piece of it was giving the owners the tools necessary to do a bit of training at home prior to the competition.

“Training is really all about play,” she says. “And playing is what people are doing it for, because it’s fun.

The day’s events definitely drew a crowd as area residents of Tipton, who just happened to be walking by, stopped to watch. Anderson says she and other CARE volunteers chatted with residents about theirs and other rescue organizations.

“I think it was a good opportunity for people to learn about other animal programs and facilities in town,” she says.

The CARE organization definitely looks forward to the possibility of a Doggie ’Lympics 2015, Dawson says. “We’d like to make it our annual summer fundraiser. We want to add some events and perfect the ones from this year.”

Dog days of winter Cold weather can pose serious risks to your pet.

Check out these tips to keep your furry friend safe and healthy this winter: Ditch the itch. The back and forth of coming indoors from the cold during the winter can cause an animal’s skin and paws to itch and flake. Be sure to towel dry your pet when it comes in from outdoors.

Bring a towel. On long walks or when there’s slush, snow or rain, carry a towel to keep your pet’s paws from getting irritated by the stinging cold. Be sure to wipe their paws before going indoors, especially between their toes, to remove any slush, salt, ice or other winter debris.

Dress ’em up. Booties and winter gear, like coats, are a great way to not only give your pet a little style, but also help them to retain body heat and protect their paws from the cold.

Style and trim. If your pet is a long-hair breed, fur can collect a lot of things, from ice to salt and icky deicing chemicals. Trim your pet’s fur to reduce the risk of collecting nasty souvenirs from the cold. Also, regular brushing and grooming can increase circulation, which helps with body heat and improves the condition of your pet’s skin.

Second helping. Staying warm takes energy. Since loss of body heat can lead to dehydration, make sure your pet has access to plenty of water and gets a little extra food at mealtime.

Brrr, it’s too cold. When temperatures are especially frigid, be sure to keep pets indoors more often during the winter months and, when traveling, do not leave pets alone in a vehicle – even if you’re just running to the store.
