President’s letter Dear Friends, I am so very excited to congratulate the Leadership Bartholomew County class of 2015. Throughout the year participants interacted with many of the community’s leaders at multiple venues. Each month was a new experience where philosophies were shared and networks expanded; experiential learning that fostered growth and developed strengths through social collaboration. The Board of Directors desires to provide an experience that alters perspectives and perpetuates the values of the community. An experience that involves great effort, from the board, the facilitator and the presenters. This year our new facilitator, Amber Fischvogt, brought her innovative style to LBC, and her plans for next year promise to invigorate the curriculum through retrospective assignments and externships. Partnering Amber with our program committee chairwoman, Abbie Bush, was a fortunate happenstance for LBC and the community. They are moving LBC in a direction that promises new experiences for our participants and bolsters the modern perspective the board has adopted over the last few years. Barbara Stamper has taken on a new assignment. Our former recruitment chairwoman is now our director of alumni relations. Barb’s first scheduled event, a gathering at Hotel Indigo for all LBC alumni,
was brilliant. Guest speaker David Elwood spoke on the importance of leadership in the community, and his words were inspirational. I look forward to future events. Collaboration through Coalition Leadership (CCL) is presently in its second run, and in year two the first cohort continues to work on their projects while this year’s cohort is in project development. I believe Jack Hess has exceeded expectations with his curriculum and perpetuated the Miller values infinitum. All in all a good year for Leadership Bartholomew County. We have served the community for more than 30 years, and although I have had the privilege for only a couple of years, I understand the value of service in this community; it exists in the emotion expressed when I say, “Columbus is my home.” Through the combined efforts of the board, the facilitator and the presenters, we will continue to remain good stewards of the county’s leadership education. Thank you,
Thomas A. Sobat, Ed.D. LBC Board President

Looking back at this year’s programs
E
ach year, Leadership Bartholomew County strives to provide class members with enriching and meaningful class sessions that couple personal leadership exploration with discussion of important community topics. This year’s class included panel discussions, field trips, tours and the creation of a personal leadership philosophy. The class year kicked off in September with an extended session devoted to the impact leadership has had on our community. In her keynote speech, Sherry Stark focused on J. Irwin Miller’s vision for Columbus and the steps taken – then and now – to make his vision a reality. To further understand their role in our leadership journey, class members also explored their own leadership styles by completing the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test and participating in a series of activities to demonstrate differences in the way individuals think and act. Over the next several months, class members attended sessions focusing on the following topics: • The “value proposition” of Columbus, past and present • Changing demographics of
Bartholomew County • Challenges facing local nonprofits • Influencing change through collaboration • Agriculture’s impact in Bartholomew County • Local approaches to education One of the highlights of our program year is the graduation session held in April. This session serves to merge all of the community topics discussed during the year with each individual class member’s personal leadership journey. This year’s graduation session was held at Harrison College. Class members worked in teams to share and discuss their personal leadership philosophies and applied their leadership styles in a team building activity. Teams then artistically represented a “super-leader” with the qualities and characteristics they most value in a leader. Graduation ceremonies started with a keynote address from Jim Bickel, president and CEO of Columbus Regional Health. He focused his presentation on his personal leadership journey and the lessons in leadership he has learned along the way. Class members were presented with a plaque and certificate of completion before the closing of the final session.

LBC Prepares for Class of 2015-2016
P
reparation for Leadership Bartholomew County class sessions for 2015-2016 is already underway. We look forward to providing new class members with the opportunity to network, explore leadership and discuss important community topics. The 2015-2016 program will run from September through April, with class sessions meeting the second Tuesday of each month. The September, January and April class sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. These sessions will focus on personal leadership development and leadership training topics. Sessions in October, November, December, February and March will all be from 8 a.m. to noon. These sessions will cover community leadership topics and offer the opportunity for collaboration with class members and guest speakers. Topics will include community development, civic leadership, community collaborations and the impact of local education initiatives. New for the class of 2015-2016 is the opportunity to participate in various community activities – or externships. Class members will be asked to take part in externships as a way to enhance their LBC experience, learn more about the community and connect with community leaders outside of class.
Interested in Applying?
Applications for the 2015-2106 class will be available on June 1. Applications are available online at www.leadershipbc.org. They can also be
printed, filled out and dropped off at the Chamber of Commerce at 500 Franklin St. in Columbus. The deadline to submit an application is July 31. Should you have questions, please call 812-3794457. Tuition for the 2015-2016 class is $495. Class size is limited.
Graduation Policy
Leadership Bartholomew County requires class members to attend seven of eight class sessions in order to graduate. Because class members learn about community leadership topics by participating in discussion with each other at each class session, frequent absences damage the quality of the program and cannot be accepted. Class members who miss two or more sessions will be allowed to graduate the following year by attending those sessions that most closely correspond to the sessions they missed.

First graduating class of
Collaboration through Coalition Leadership
L
eadership Bartholomew County, in partnership with the Institute for Coalition Building, graduated the first class of Collaboration through Coalition Leadership (CCL) in November 2014. Class members attended seven, threehour workshops held once a month for seven months. During these workshops, class members were taught the process of coalition building and the concept of stakeholder relationships. Jack Hess, executive director of the Institute for Coalition Building, served as facilitator and will continue in this role for the CCL Class of 2015. As part of the class curriculum, participants compiled a list of complex community issues and formed teams to address these issues using the coalition building model. Class members chose areas of interest based on needs in the community and their personal passions. These project teams continue to work on their chosen community issues beyond the scope of the program and are aligned with stakeholders in Bartholomew County involved in each of the areas. Jack Hess

Second CCL class underway
T
he second class of Collaboration through Coalition Leadership kicked off April 9. Twenty class members met at Harrison College for a morning focused on the leadership story and values of the greater Columbus and Bartholomew County community. In his second year as CCL facilitator, Jack Hess explained to the participants how this nextstage leadership development experience is designed to address a complex community challenge using the coalition building process and the concept of stakeholder relationships. As was a requirement for last year’s class, current class members identified a list of complex community
issues ripe for collaborative action. The challenge goes beyond a community service project. Rather, it is intended to be a longer-term engagement for a group of stakeholders to better coordinate and align efforts. Five guiding teams were formed based on each team member’s preference and passion for a specific community challenge. These teams will work closely together over the next seven months to work their way around the coalition building process wheel as part of an action learning model – an educational process whereby people work and learn together by tackling real issues and reflecting on their actions. The groups left the first workshop eager to dig in and hit the ground running. The end goal of the CCL program is to increase community capacity by teaching the practice of coalition building to our community’s emerging leaders. Participants in the second CCL class are: Kelly Baker, Cruz Baisa, Anthony Blair, Kelly Benjamin, Debbie East, Zach Greiner, Jan Harris, Diane Hawes, Beth Jones, Bill Mahoney, Richard McCoy, Luz Elena Michel, Sandra Miles, Angie Shafer, Jen Shaver, Cheri Stone, Bryce Wagner, Lisa Westmark, Janice Whittington, Andy Young

A special thanks to the following organizations for their continued support and partnership:
Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce
The Chamber of Commerce was one of the original founding organizations of LBC. The Chamber continues to provide support for the program by providing administrative support.
Heritage Fund – The Community Foundation of Bartholomew County
The Leadership Bartholomew County Fund, established by Tom and Lynn Bigley in 1993, helps provide partial scholarships for LBC participants. A gift to the endowment is a wonderful way to honor a recent LBC graduate or to recognize a birthday or anniversary. Alumni and others interested in contributing are asked to contact Tom Sobat, LBC president, by calling 812-374-5228. In addition to managing the LBC Endowment Fund, the Heritage Fund also partners with LBC and the Institute for Coalition Building to provide grant funding for the CCL program.
Columbus Service League
For the past several years, LBC has partnered with the Columbus Service League to offer leadership training to top students recognized by the Service League’s Youth Leadership Bartholomew County program. This program is designed to recognize and reward accomplishments of our community’s youths. The top students were invited to participate in two LBC sessions to learn from current Bartholomew County leaders and dialogue with LBC class participants.
Lara Hodson and Sarah Warfield present their team’s super-leader to the class.
LBC Alumni Event
F
or the first time in several years, LBC hosted an event for alumni and friends. The event, held April 16 at Hotel Indigo, featured informal networking and a presentation by David Elwood, chairman of the board of Elwood Staffing. He shared five key principles of successful leadership and reiterated to the class that all are leaders regardless of title or position. Nearly 60 alumni and friends were in attendance.
This event marks a reinvigoration of LBC’s alumni network. With hundreds of graduates in the community, LBC plans to ramp up networking and socializing opportunities for alumni over the next year. Alumni interested in receiving communications about events should send updated contact information to contact@leadershipbc.org and like us on Facebook at Leadership Bartholomew County.

Leadership Bartholomew County
Julie McClure
2015 LBC GRaduaTe “Leadership Bartholomew County is a wonderful opportunity to gain insight into Columbus’ past, present and future. I loved meeting new people and learning how they are working to make Columbus an even greater community every day. My classmates became my mentors and our class leaders became our contacts and reference points to new opportunities for leadership and service.”
