“WE KEPT AN EYE ON THE GOAL” Greenville’s Renaissance the Product of Decades of Vision and Leadership Chris Worthy

Contributing Writer

Newcomers and visitors to Downtown Greenville are most often drawn to the city’s food scene, entertainment options and the iconic Falls Park. The city’s vibrant, bustling downtown is a work in progress – a fact made obvious by ongoing construction – even as it offers a walkable experience that lands it on “best of ” lists across the country. But it is hard to fully appreciate where Greenville is today without knowing where it was before its renaissance started. The forces and factors that shaped the city’s downtown area are nuanced, according to Greenville Mayor Knox White, but recent decades have included several leaps of faith that had incredible results. White and John Boyanoski detail much of the city’s history in their book, “Reimaging Greenville: Building the Best Downtown in America.” “What makes Greenville different is that when the downtown collapsed in the ’70s, there was a core leadership that was determined not to let the downtown die, not to walk away from it,” White

said. “We live with that history and think, well, that’s the way it was. What you find is that in most cities in America, the downtowns died. It didn’t happen everywhere, but a lot of cities were very slow to react to it. Some are just now reacting to it 20 or 30 years later. We were fortunate that we had a collective leadership that said, ‘let’s not let it die’.” The Daniel Building and the former Greenville News building served as bookends to the downtown and cornerstones for what was to come. “Maybe 10 years after that, when the department stores had left, Buck Mickel, Max Heller and Tommy Wyche would bring in designers from, of all places, San Francisco, to look at Main Street,” White said. Landscape architect Lawrence Halprin created the design for a downtown that was only a dream at that point. “They decided to bulldoze Main Street from four lanes to two and create wide sidewalks and plant trees in what was a desolate place,” White said. “It would take years for the trees to grow out, but that

PLACES TO KNOW Points In Greenville’s History and Rebirth Allen Temple AME Church

Though the congregation was organized in 1881, the church was built in 1930. It serves as a center of community impact still today.

Christ Church

In addition to the historic church building, the adjacent cemetery is the final resting place for many from Greenville’s history.

Greenville County Courthouse

The former courthouse, a Main Street icon, has found elegant new life as retail and office space.

Huguenot Mill

Built around 1880, the mill is now part of the Peace Center and is home to weddings, special events, arts opportunities and more.

Hyatt Hotel

When the hotel opened in 1982, it was one of the early centerpieces of what leaders hoped would be a reborn Main Street.

Peace Center for the Performing Arts

Created through a public-private partnership, the center opened in 1990 and quickly became an important part of the arts in Greenville. It now serves as a hub of Broadway tours and resident companies that delight locals and visitors from across the country.

The Poinsett Hotel

Built in 1925, it was long empty when an extensive renovation began in 1997, adding another anchor point to Main Street.

Reedy River Falls

Birthplace of the city, it is now the centerpiece of Downtown. Surrounding Falls Park on the Reedy is an urban oasis that is unique to Greenville.

West End Historic District:

Dating to 1869, the area was once a commercial center before falling into decline. Its resurgence includes restaurants, shopping and more.

Woodside Cotton Mill Village

This mill village was founded in 1902 during the Upstate’s textile heyday. Learn more about some of these locations and many others in the Upstate at nationalregister.sc.gov/greenville. 12

The essence of Downtown is trees and water. If we continue to keep that in mind for the future, I think we’ll be in good shape.

Knox White, Greenville Mayor was definitely a reinvestment at a time when most people weren’t doing that kind of thing. But thank goodness they did.” White said he once asked former Greenville City Council member Pat Haskell-Robinson how leaders like Mickel, Wyche and Heller were able to accomplish such radical change. “She laughed and said, ‘You don’t understand. There was no one left to complain,’ ” White said. “I found out later that there’s a lot of truth to that. You look at old photographs and there’s no one left to complain.” White, who was first elected mayor in 1995, said that time period – when those leaders who were left laid the foundation for the future, walkable, enviable downtown – was just the first phase in the city’s transformation. “Twenty years later, the trees had grown out and people did take pride in that,” White said. “The Hyatt Hotel was there and the Peace Center.” But storefronts still remained vacant, awaiting restaurants and shops. There were almost no residents downtown, White said. “People didn’t have a habit of going downtown. There were no tourists. People didn’t visit Greenville. That’s the next phase. We took a good look at things in 1998 and 1999 and launched a new effort.” The renovation of the historic Poinsett Hotel, which was boarded up at the time, added an important stop along Main Street. “You had the Peace Center, but for the most part, the only (other) heartbeat was the block around the Hyatt,” White said. “The Poinsett was important because it dramatically Top to bottom, Greenville’s historic Christ Church, Hyatt Hotel. provided a new anchor many blocks down the street. It really lit a fuse in this whole other area downtown and let things pick up.” From there, the city emphasized bringing housing opportunities to downtown, encouraging secondfloor living and apartments. “We began to get a critical mass of residential,” White said. “It’s hard to believe now with all these apartments and all these condos, but back in 2000, we had just a handful.” S i m u l t a n e o u s l y, local restaurateurs Rick Erwin and Carl Sobocinski were crafting the start of Greenville’s culinary scene. The growth of downtown’s residential population meant that people were around after 5 p.m. and on weekends. “All along, we kept an eye on the goal, which was to create a people-focused downtown,” White said. “We remained true to the original vision on that and we still do today.” Next, White said, the march to the river began. “The next big effort would definitely be the reclaiming of the falls and the Reedy River,” he said. It shocks visitors now to learn that Reedy River Falls were once completely blocked from view. “The four-lane highway bridge had been there for 40 years,” White said. “That’s over a generation, so it shouldn’t be surprising, but it seems amazing that most people who lived in Greenville all their lives had never seen the waterfall.” The notion of demolishing the Camperdown Bridge in 2002 in favor of a park with a pedestrian bridge was controversial, to say the least. “We were saying, we’re going to spend $18 million to build a park around a waterfall you’ve never seen

– trust us,” White said. The gamble paid off. “We made the falls and the river the centerpiece of the whole downtown,” White said. “Within two years, we had over $150 million in private investment along the river.” From there, growth went out and up. The once boarded up West End has been renewed and Fluor Field rose from an abandoned l u m b e r y a r d . Restaurants and shopping grew as people moved to the city. Public art, placed intentionally at spots throughout downtown, further encouraged visitors to spend time walking under those mature trees that line Main Street. City Council member Russell Stall has generational ties to the city. His great-grandfather, Bony Hampton Peace, purchased the Greenville News in 1919, and his great uncle, Roger Peace, built the “bookend” Greenville News building. Stall said the city is at a tipping point where it is important to maintain the quality of life downtown and ensure that it is a community for all. Like White, he credits great leadership in the past for Greenville’s explosion of growth. “We want to be the most livable community in the country,” Stall said. “That’s a bold vision and I think it’s achievable. We’re naïve enough in this community to think we can do anything. I think we can.” Strategic planning of future development, along with a focus on affordable housing and transportation are critical. Stall said the city’s growth is so rapid that data from just two years ago is considered old. The city’s nighttime population is about 75,000 residents, Stall said, but that burgeons to around

THINGS TO GROW Places and Trends That Will Shape Greenville’s Future Affordable Housing

With a hot-as-summer real estate market, prices have skyrocketed. A new focus on affordable housing is aimed at ensuring housing is available to all in the city.

Camperdown Project Coming soon, the site at Main and Broad Streets is transforming transform the skyline with mixed-use development.

Conference Center

Greenville has seen only a first look at a proposed riverside conference and arts center that will bring needed meeting and gallery space.

County Square

The redevelopment of the University Ridge site is a public-private partnership that will reshape the area just around the corner from Falls Park.

Food Scene

With a growing reputation among foodies, Greenville is attracting restaurateurs and chefs that combine creativity and local food in a way that is creating a national buzz.

We want to be the most livable community in the country … We’re naïve enough in this community to think we can do anything.

Russell Stall, Greenville City Council 200,000 during the day. And beyond the city itself, Greenville County and surrounding communities are experiencing their own boon. “We can’t think of Greenville in a vacuum,” Stall said. “The things we are doing in Greenville are directly impacting the region. It’s such an exciting time to be living in the Upstate. We have so many good things going on and they build on each other. We have a history of building on success.” For White, that comes down to a vision born decades ago, for a city that sprouted from a spot near the foothills, alongside a river. “The essence of downtown is trees and water,” White said. “If we continue to keep that in mind for the future, I think we’ll be in good shape.”

Sports

From baseball to hockey to soccer, sports abound downtown. “The Well” arena has also become an attractive location for college basketball tournament action.

Swamp Rabbit Trail

The trail is home to cyclists, runners and walkers all year. It now attracts tourists – some of whom make Greenville their home.

Transportation

Increasing access to and use of public transportation is an important issue for city leadership and one that will have an impact on the future.

Unity Park

The 60-acre site will add greenspace and address affordable housing, while hearkening back to a 1907 city plan that called for parks along the Reedy River.

West End Development

As food, shopping and new homes continue to make news in the area, the city’s West End is becoming a destination in its own right. 16

EXPLORE Downtown Greenville Greenville continues to land spots on many national “best of ” and “must visit” lists, though a recent accolade as one of the “most underappreciated” cities may soon be thing of the past. Most of the praise for the city focuses on its walkable, tree-lined Main Street, the parks and trails that dot the city, the ever-expanding restaurant and brewery offerings and the vibrant visual and performing arts scene. Residents already know how special Greenville is, and they love showing off the city to friends and new neighbors.

CHUCK MILTEER

Contributing Writer

As dozens of publications, travel sites and bloggers have raved about the charms of Greenville, there is one consistent theme: Come ready to eat! There’s great food available here in just about any cuisine imaginable, at restaurants from fancy to down-home. A writer for the Zagat Survey says Greenville’s food scene is becoming a worthy rival of Charleston. And while that may be aspirational, there are acclaimed chefs who have come to town (many from notable Charleston eateries) to open and run some of the many dozens of restaurants that are in easy walking distance from the center of downtown Greenville – and dozens more within a short drive. Among the names: Sean Brock, the James Beard Award winning chef, who opened a Greenville location of Husk, with its authentically Southern farm-to-table 24

approach. And Greg McPhee, who founded The Anchorage, part of a thriving restaurant scene in the Village at West Greenville. But perhaps one of the most important names in the Greenville Restaurant scene is Carl Sobocinski, who fueled the downtown dining renaissance when he opened Soby’s, in 1997, in a historic building across Main Street from the Poinsett Hotel and a block from the Peace Center. Sobocinski’s Table 301 group now operates half a dozen Downtown restaurants. The New South cuisine pioneered in Greenville by Soby’s is a common theme among many of the area’s culinary offerings, along with nods to the familiar with barbecue, tacos and pizza. There are also numerous international offerings from Greek to Persian to Japanese to Indian to Afghan. Here are a few options:

Greenville’s Restaurant Scene Continues to Gain Fans, Fame

The Anchorage

Sushi Murasaki

586 Perry Ave., Greenville, 29611 Nationally-renowned, but with a casual setting in the Village of West Greenville, expect small-plates showcasing chef Greg McPhee’s skill with simple ingredients from local and regional sources. The Anchorage is a James Beard-award nominated restaurant, but reservations are not required (though they are now available). Upstairs, the bar offers cocktails crafted with homemade syrups and ginger beer, craft beer and what they call “sustainable” wine.

Sushi Bar, 2 S. Main St., Greenville, 29601 This is actually a two-for-one, for those dining with non-sushi lovers. Sushi Murasaki features its own sushi and Japanese menu paired with the entire menu from The Orient right next door, a hibachi and Chinese restaurant that shares a kitchen with Murasaki. Open for more than 20 years, Sushi Murasaki is well-established as an Asian favorite, and has a great blend of traditional Japanese rolls as well as American inventions featuring shrimp tempura and some odes to favorite local colleges. The atmosphere is fun, yet family-friendly at all times.

Aryana Afghan Cuisine, 210 E. Coffee St., Greenville, 29601 If you’ve never had Afghan food, think Indian meets Mexican meets Greek. The flavors are mild, warm, and comforting, exotic but familiar. Aryana in particular is a perfect first-try for Afghan food as there is no menu, only a sampler of daily offerings. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available, but the gist is this: Walk in, tell the server how many people, grab the plate they make for you, and eat. The restaurant is small but bright and airy, the staff willing to explain each of the dishes to anyone at the table. Repeat diners will find that each visit is sure to include a favorite on the plate that day, as well as something new.

Trio, A Brick Oven Café Pizza and pasta, 22 N. Main St., Greenville One of the founders of the Downtown dining scene, Trio has been stoking the wood-fired pizza oven for more than 25 years. The chicken Margherita pizza is a fresh slice of deliciousness and the roast chicken with basil pesto is another favorite pie. Pasta dishes like Roma and Sun-dried Tomatoes with Basil Pesto are another specialty of the house.

Bacon Bros. Public House 3620 Pelham Rd., Greenville, 29615 You’ll have to venture to the Pelham Road at I-85 area for this one. For committed carnivores, chef Anthony Gray has created the perfect place to apply his credo: “powered by bacon.” The curing room has a viewing window and the charcuterie and meat boards feature a variety of meats, pâté and rillettes, garnished with beer mustard, pickles, olives and scratch-made cheddar thyme biscuits.

Cantina 76 103 N. Main St., Greenville, 29601 Tucked away off of the ONE City Plaza, it’s a Downtown addition to Greenville’s Taco scene. In nice weather, there’s plenty of dog-friendly seating outside. Inside, there’s a well-stocked bar serving top-notch Sangria and meticulously crafted Margaritas. When it’s time for lunch or dinner, try the Peruvian Shrimp or Surf and Turf tacos, the Chimichanga … and just about anything else.

Handi Indian Restaurant 18 N. Main St., Greenville, 29601 Greenville is lucky to have several wonderful Indian restaurants, but Handi is a longtime favorite among natives and new residents alike. Lunch includes an optional buffet which offers a chance to try lots of menu options, and dinnertime offers a homey feel with low lighting and quiet music. The restaurant features a dog- (and kid-) friendly patio, and almost all of the dishes can be customized based on your preference of spice and protein. If you’ve never been, try one of the sampler plates as an appetizer or main course.

Pomegranate on Main

GET TY GES IMA

Fresh Persian Cuisine, 618 S. Main St., Greenville, 29601 Pomegranate is a longstanding Greenville tradition, offering healthy, light Persian options. Appetizers include vegetarian dips such as hummus, spinach dip, or eggplant offerings, served with pita, fresh mint, and crisp radishes. Entrees feature a seared protein (try a kebab) with a seasoned rice choice and grilled tomato to tie the plate together. Pomegranate martinis are a favorite, and ask your server for wine pairing suggestions. If you go on a weekend, call ahead for a reservation to avoid a wait, and check the website and Facebook page for weekly specials such as live music or half off bottles of wine.

HIDDEN GEM DISHES at Greenville Restaurants Lillia Callum-Penso The Greenville News USA TODAY NETWORK – SOUTH CAROLINA

So, let me preface this with the qualifier that this is by no means a definitive list. I got to thinking that sometimes, I go to restaurants, be it barbecue or biscuit-ful or pizza, and I order something other than the thing the restaurant is known for. Things like a salad at a burger joint, or cake at a taco shop. Not unexpected, but maybe just more unnoticed. I know you probably have your own list of “hidden gem dishes,” so please share. A few that come to mind for me follows on page 28. Lilia Callum-Penso has perhaps the most envied job at the Greenville News. As the News’ food writer, she spends her days chatting up chefs and local producers and making food relevant to readers. This story was posted at GreenvilleOnline.com in June 2018.

Collard Greens at Biscuit Head Have you tried these? You should. First off, they are not the traditional southern style cooked with ham hock, though they do produce a delicious potlikker. They have a curry flavor thanks to the use of coconut milk, which makes these greens vegan. I get them alongside any biscuit I order, and even ordered a side of them that one time I ordered the granola instead. Yep, I’m that oddball. But to me, they are just that good. The Ice Cream at Sidewall Pizza Company

Hot Sauce at Pita House

So, Sidewall does pretty much everything well, thanks to a super-focused menu and a commitment to fresh ingredients. The salads and pizza are top-notch, creative, flavorful and filling. But the ice cream, oh man, it’s awesome. The flavors change daily and the Facebook feed that reveals each day’s new combination pretty often leaves me drooling at my desk. The restaurant offers just two flavors a day, a non-dairy and a dairy, and they are worth a trip to the restaurant for just dessert.

This one is maybe not a fit for this list, but since I douse most everything with this delightful sauce, I thought I’d add it. This stuff is made in house, and it is not too spicy, but more flavorful. Used to be I’d just add a little to the side of my falafel or hummus, until one day, I realized I was adding it to pretty much everything including the carrots.

The Vegetables at The Anchorage Now, this one might not be entirely surprising, but it’s worth a mention, because the veggies here always shine. Greg McPhee and his team have the perfect way of making them sing without overpowering them. So the vegetables, while sometimes quite creative — grilled turnips and peaches with beer mustard, horseradish, lemon and herbs, for example — are flavorful in a way that honors them. I’ve seen a meat-eater order an all-vegetable entree here, and walk away utterly satisfied.

The Fried Beets at Kitchen Sync Hiding in the starters section of the menu are these delightfully crispy, crunchy and sweet beets. They are flash fried, which lends a perfect textural contrast to the roasted beet itself. And the smokey aioli served alongside will win over even the most ardent mayo hater.

The Crudo at Jianna Chef Michael Kramer’s modern Italian-inspired restaurant knows pasta, and it knows oysters, and it does both really well. But the crudos are equally refined and thoughtful. Kramer uses whatever is freshest, and gets creative with flavor pairings. These change depending on what’s available, and are well worth a bite.

Cheese Plate at Rick Erwin’s West End Grill You may know Rick Erwin’s restaurants for steak, and that makes sense, but the cheese plate at the West End Grille is truly delicious. It is large, with generous portions of cheese, along with accompaniments, and makes sense at the beginning or end of a meal. I can take or leave cake, can’t say the same for a nice cheese plate.

28

Destination Greenville 2019

Black Bean Hummus at Barley’s Yummy pizza and craft beer are the name of the game here, but I always come back to the black bean hummus. Be forewarned, it does have a little bit of a kick, and it is also not traditional (Pita House would be a better for that), but it is super flavorful. I also kinda like the texture, which is thick and best scooped out and smeared on the accompanying bread with a spoon versus dipped in to. The paprika on top also adds a nice touch. L-R, Goat cheese citrus pecan ice cream. SIDEWALL PIZZA. The Brussels sprouts at The Anchorage are incredible. LILLIA CALLUM-PENSO/STAFF. The beets at Kitchen Sync are not to be missed. KITCHEN SYNC. WHAT’S COOKING? Festivals and Celebrations of Food Befitting its status as a foodie destination, Greenville has a bounty of events, outdoors and in.

Fall for Greenville

The original food-fest in the region. More than 40 restaurants from around the area offer more than 200 small-plate specialties from booths up and down Main Street. There’s always lots of entertainment on several stages, too. Fall for Greenville was first held in 1982 to showcase the city’s then newly tree-lined streetscape. The event consistently gets top rankings among festivals in the Southeast and has given grants and donations of more than $650,000 to local organizations since 2004. FOOD TRUCKS? Got ‘Em By The Dozen! Lillia Callum-Penso The Greenville News USA TODAY NETWORK – SOUTH CAROLINA

Greenville is growing, and so is the fleet of food trucks roaming its roads and parking lots. Recent additions include mobile eateries for Latin fusion, Indian, Cuban and Turkish-Mediterranean food. Existing trucks are constantly being sold and repurposed, so if you’re wishing for a particular kind of cuisine, it’s probably on the way. Here are some of the mobile food operations currently up and running. And for updated info on where you can find the local food trucks, check out iongreenville. com’s Food Truck Calendar and check out the list on VisitGreenvilleSC.com.

HISTORY AND HIGH CONCEPT Public Art As Varied As It Is Plentiful Neil Shurley Contributing Writer

If you want to get a sense of Greenville’s history, civic pride and artistic diversity, just take a walk. Public art is everywhere, from tiny mice hidden along Main Street to epic sculpture and murals all over town. The City of Greenville’s official roster lists more than 90 items – and that’s not counting the many, many works elsewhere across the area, in parks and outside municipal centers and businesses. Downtown Greenville certainly boasts the highest concentration of public art, almost all of it installed since 2001 -- a concentrated, successful effort by city leaders to celebrate Greenville’s history and culture. Local sculptor Zan Wells is the creator of the largest number of those works -- more than a dozen -- including Mice on Main, the nine tiny bronze rodents that are the subject of countless downtown treasure hunts (look for a tip sheet at Mast General Store if you want hints). Wells has also cast bronze likenesses of prominent Greenvillians, past and present. Here’s a guide to some visual treats you’ll find in a meandering walk along the few blocks around Main Street and beside the Reedy River. It is by no means comprehensive, so keep your eyes open: There’s art around every corner. We’ll start and end at Court Square, on Main Street, but really any place is a fine beginning.

A Nod to the Founders Main Street at Court Street At Main and Court streets, next to the Westin Poinsett Hotel, you’ll find a statue of its namesake, 1800s diplomat Joel Poinsett, who introduced the U.S. to a Central American flower that now also bears his name – the poinsettia. Looking across the street, you can see the gorgeous Liberty Clock and, slightly to the left, a bronze of Vardry McBee, often called The Father of Greenville. In 1815, McBee (it’s MACK-be, though many natives will be too polite to correct you) purchased more than 10,000 acres that encompass almost all of the Downtown area and whose mill on the Reedy River was the earliest seed of the city.

Thoughts on the Walk and Il Porcellino, Main Street at Poinsett Plaza Past the hotel on Main, you can walk north to Poinsett Plaza. There, you’ll find yourself face to face with a wild boar. Il Porcellino is a fullsized replica of an iconic 17th-century sculpture located in Florence, Italy. Less immediately noticeable, beneath your feet along the block, are Thoughts on the Walk, a series of 28 engraved stones embedded in sidewalk that feature mainly business-related quotes.

Octo 2, McBee Avenue at Spring Street Turn right on McBee and cross Main. At the next corner, you’ll find Octo 2, the city’s first kinetic sculpture. Created by Anthony Howe and powered only by the wind, this unique stainless steel piece rotates and spins to create a mesmerizing visual experience. Howe also designed the cauldron for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Sterling High Students, Corner of Washington and Main Streets Back on Main and another block away from Court Square, two proud students of Sterling High, once Greenville’s public high school for black students. Installed in 2006, the statue by Mariah Kirby Smith represents the determination, resilience and leadership of the segregated school’s students in promoting change during the civil rights era. The monument is in front of the former site of the Woolworth’s store where students staged lunch-counter sit-ins in the summer of 1960.

Water Blessing, Corner of Washington and Broad This one is a couple of blocks off Main, but worth a look. The 10-foottall sculpture and water feature by Doug Young shows a Cherokee offering thanks to the creator for the gift of water. The work sits in the small corner park outside the headquarters of Greenville Water System and is just one example of the many businesses that have invested in public art. The Upstate of South Carolina was the home to Cherokee for many centuries before the arrival of European settlers.

Linky Stone Park: The Children’s Garden, 24 Reedy View Drive Facing back toward Main, go right on Broad and follow the curve and then turn right and cross the pedestrian bridge. You’re on the Swamp Rabbit Trail. On your left, you’ll see Linky Stone Park, home of The Children’s Garden. This serene spot features a number of attractions, including Vincenzo the pig, three little bears, a Cherokee Indian, and a few surprises.

Art Crossing/Riverplace Fountain, 300 River Street, Swamp Rabbit Trail, Reedy River Walk along the Reedy River back toward Main Street. Along the paved trail you’ll see the Riverplace Fountain, and if it’s sunny and hot, you might be tempted to jump into the children’s fountain, featuring 32 pulsating water jets that shoot up at random. Continuing, you’ll see the multiple studios that make up the Art Crossing, where you can both buy art and watch artists at work.

Liberty Bridge, Falls Park Continue beneath the Main Street bridge and into Falls Park. Just ahead you’ll see Greenville’s biggest civic artwork, the park’s focal point and the city’s emblem, Liberty Bridge. Stroll down to the water’s edge or climb the steps (or take the elevator) up to street level and admire Miguel Rosales’ cantilevered bridge design and the falls it overlooks. From here, you can head back to Main Street and Court Square and call it a day. Or you could continue deeper into the park, farther along the Swamp Rabbit Trail, to discover other artworks waiting for you along the way.

Aerabella and the Governor, Peace Center Plaza, Main Street at Broad Street Once you return to street level, the Peace Center Concert Hall will be on your right. Aerabella, Michael Gard’s graceful sculpture of wire and LED lights, glows and hovers from the ceiling just inside the three-story windows of the lobby. Outside, in the Center of the Plaza, is Zan Wells’ bronze of former South Carolina Gov. Richard Riley, the latest addition to the civic art collection.

Meditation & Reminiscence, South Main Street at Broad Street Across Broad Street, along Main, you’ll find Meditation and Reminiscence, two angelic statues of a flautist and a violinist by Vietnamese artist Tuan Nguyen. After being locked in a concentration camp in 1985, Nguyen mixed dirt and water from his cell floor to create clay sculptures, ultimately escaping to the U.S. in 1989. He has since become internationally recognized for his art. And as you return to Court Square, be sure to treat yourself to an edible work of art, gelato from Luna Rosa Café.

TAKE IN A SHOW Greenville Offers a Bounty Of Stages, Performances CHRIS WORTHY, CHUCK MILTEER Contributing Writers

Greenville is blessed with a vibrant performing arts scene, with theater and music performances on a stage somewhere in town almost every day. There are touring Broadway shows and top-name musical performers at the Peace Center and the Bon Secours Wellness Arena, but it’s the bounty of smaller venues that give the area its rich artistic variety, says Greenville Theater Executive Artistic Director Allan McCalla. “It makes the quality of life as good as some big cities, but we still have our quaint charm,” McCalla said. “Arts are at the center of that. The Peace Center is a big part of that, but so is everyone else.” This year, the 91-year-old Greenville Little Theater became simply Greenville Theater, a reflection of the theater’s outsized impact in the city’s arts scene from its longtime home at Heritage Green, just a couple of blocks from Main Street. “We’re really not changing who we are,” McCalla said. “We’re modifying the name to reflect better who we are.” In the heart of downtown, the Peace Center calendar is always loaded with music, family shows, ballet and more. The Broadway Series draws audiences from far and wide and brings in shows that might usually be associated with much larger cities. The upcoming Broadway 38

Destination Greenville 2019

season features performance runs of familiar favorites “CATS” and “Les Miserables” among its 11 shows. And the cultural phenomenon “Hamilton,” which made a tour stop in December will be returning in the 2020-21 season. “These shows love coming to Greenville,” Megan Riegel, the Peace Center’s president and CEO, says. And while big-name shows and acts are important, Riegel stresses that variety is

too, as it keeps Greenville known as a place for artists and their audiences. Warehouse Theatre, Centre Stage, Greenville Theatre and the Bon Secours Wellness Arena are some of the key players in that mix, she said. McCalla points to the depth of Greenville’s arts calendar and the high level of community support for such variety. “It’s 52 weeks of the year – you’d be hard-pressed ever to say there’s nothing to see artswise,” he said. “I think people have come to realize that it’s something worth supporting.” A sampling of performing arts groups and venues follows on page 40.

TAKING IT DOWNTOWN Nearby Communities Also Benefit From Town-Center Development Chris Worthy

Contributing Writer

As Downtown Greenville’s resurgence has attracted residents, a thriving commercial scene and a burgeoning tourism industry, there is a ripple effect throughout the Upstate. Greenville’s impact, along with national trends and forward thinking has led to growth in surrounding communities – each with their own unique identity – and increased options for housing, recreation and a quality of life that is attracting attention. Travelers Rest is one of those communities near Greenville that TR City Administrator Eric Vinson says was once a “pass through.” Now, the city is being embraced by people who love the outdoors and a small town atmosphere that doesn’t sacrifice ease of access. “It was the extension of the Swamp Rabbit Trail that started it,” Vinson said. The trail’s popularity led to a need for streetscape improvements including sidewalks, trees and lighting. “All of those things were critical for the resurgence of the downtown area,” Vinson said. “We had a few pioneers that partnered with the city and the trail to provide restrooms and a place for people to get something to eat. It just happened organically after that. It opened up

an environment that was ripe for business.” Nearby, Greer, the second-most populous city in Greenville County, has a growing restaurant scene and a full slate of community events. With downtown occupancy in Greer currently around 92 percent, the area is bustling with activity. The City of Greer is investing approximately $25 million in the downtown area, including new LED lighting, a municipal parking garage on the block just north of Trade Street, a complete renovation of the Center for the Arts and the CenterG

Streetscape Project underway in the central business district. The parking garage will provide parking for downtown visitors and guests at the new Hampton by Hilton hotel. Both will be surrounded by new

retail spaces. The Golden Strip – Simpsonville, Mauldin and Fountain Inn – has seen marked growth as well, with more on the horizon. Mauldin has reshaped its downtown with a focus on the city’s center. The Mauldin Cultural Center serves as a hub for the arts and a variety of events that bring the community together, including summer concerts, theater, classes, a farmers’ market and more. The Mauldin Public Art Trail, which is adjacent to the Cultural Center’s amphitheater is creating another attraction. Artworks will be added along the trail each year until all 10 locations are filled, then the oldest piece will be moved to another location within the community and its slot filled with something new, ensuring the trail

continues to evolve. As Mauldin adds more residents, the city has continued to focus on quality of life, as evidenced by its position on SafeWise’s top 20 safest cities in South Carolina for 2019. Next door, Simpsonville’s downtown surrounds its iconic clock tower. With an expanding food scene, craft beer and entertainment, residents and visitors can spend evenings enjoying time together. Burdette Central, a newly 56

announced project at the corner of Main and Curtis Streets, will greatly expand the options downtown with the addition of Sidewall Pizza, Kaffeine Coffee Shop, an area for live events and more. At the southern end of Greenville County, Fountain Inn has reshaped and reclaimed its downtown from empty storefronts to a bustling community. Fountain Inn’s Special Events and Community Development Manager Ashlee Tolbert said the city keeps expanding. “There are a lot of changes in the Upstate,” she said. “When you see the growth of the City of Greenville, Fountain Inn definitely benefits from that growth. We see it. We’ve got our own strategies here, but I also see how the nucleus of the county is growing. We are able to welcome and anticipate growth in our city limits.” Tolbert said residential growth in Fountain Inn has been spurred by overall growth in the Upstate. “Greenville County is one of the fastest growing counties in the country and people need housing,” she said. The city’s downtown revitalization began with streetscape improvements, the development of a pavilion and amphitheater, as well as the Fountain Inn History Museum and the Younts Center for Performing Arts. Leadership Golden Strip is completing a downtown family area that includes a splash pad. “The vision was to have that central point in Fountain Inn,” Tolbert said. “Now that we have more people moving in, the people demand entertainment and services and we focus on bringing events to that central location.” Graphics. EXPLORE The Parkins Mill area, nestled along I-85 west of Laurens Road is a mix of older homes and new construction. It’s also convenient to the thriving Verdae area, east of Laurens Road, which has sprouted homes, restaurants, a popular golf course, medical offices and more over the past 12 years. More development is in the works, all built on parts of the giant tract of property straddling I-85 that was amassed by textile machinery magnate John D. Hollingsworth. Just south of I-85 is the Millennium Campus, home of Clemson University’s International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR).

Places to Go Pita House, Middle Eastern Food & Grocery. Located on Pleasantburg Drive across from Greenville Tech. “You’ve GOT to go to Pita House,” is common advice from Greenville natives. Hummus, gyros, falafel and sampler plates are popular items on the menu, and fresh pita, olives and other unique grocery items are always available to take home. One caution: The restaurant only takes cash. Ask for extra tahini and hot sauce -- they’re delicious drizzled on just about anything. Go-to People David Maney: He runs Fowler’s Pharmacy on Laurens, which is a longtime, locally owned drugstore. But for the past 45 years Fowler’s has also been the go-to spot for sunglasses in Greenville. Maney estimates he’s sold 250,000 pairs of sunglasses and has 8,000 pairs in stock at any given time. WE MAKE IT HERE Wide Variety of Manufacturing Is Engine of Region’s Economy Chris Worthy

Contributing Writer

There was a time when textiles were king in Greenville. Today, a different kind of manufacturing rules the day. While elements of the textile industry remain, manufacturing jobs are diverse, innovative and the key to the Upstate’s robust, thriving economy. John Lummus, President and CEO of Upstate Alliance, a public/ private regional economic development organization, said the Upstate’s economic engines feature an incredible international presence with 35 countries represented. In the 10-county Upstate area, there are more than 1,800 manufacturing companies, employing 105,000 people. The availability of a ready, able workforce is critical to the success of those businesses. Lummus also credits South Carolina’s status as a right-to-work state and the Upstate’s perfect location for market accessibility – with multiple interstate highway access and a rail system that includes the inland port in Greer and its connection to the Port of Charleston – with the region’s success with manufacturers. “Making things and designing things, that’s our sweet spot,” Lummus said. The state’s technical college system remains important in providing workforce development, Lummus added. The result is a net migration of 30 people per day to the Upstate region. They come for the excellent quality of life, due in no small part to the vibrant economy. “We have a really great place to live,” Lummus said.

TOP BUSINESSES Aside from government and healthcare jobs, some of the Upstate’s top employers include well-known names like BMW, Michelin, Milliken, GE and Fluor. John Lummus with Upstate Alliance also pointed to some other nearby economic engines: TaylorMade Golf in Pickens County is a state-of-the-art golf ball manufacturing facility that opened several years ago with the goal of producing 25 million golf balls per year. TTI designs and distributes Ryobi and Homelite power tools and is building its North American headquarters in Anderson. GE, an Upstate fixture since 1968, continues its engineering innovation with wind turbine production.

DID YOU KNOW? It’s a safe bet that your home, your healthcare and even your sandwich are influenced by items made right here in the Upstate. Here’s a sampling: Abbott: pacemaker capacitors and parts Bausch & Lomb: eyecare products Bonafide Kayaks Boyd Cycling: carbon cycling wheels Confluence Outdoor: kayaks and adventure technology Duke’s Mayonnaise Humimic Medical: composite materials that mimic human tissue for testing KIYATEC: 3D cell-culture tools Lonza: capsules for medication Nutra: nutritional supplements Proterra: electric buses (Source: Upstate Alliance)

Sans Souci and Furman Sans Souci — French for “no worries” — is an urban oasis just north of downtown Greenville. Tucked between Greenville and Travelers Rest, the Sans Souci area is near the Cherrydale shopping area, with its restaurants, stores and movie theater, and the 1,540-acre Paris Mountain State Park. The San Souci neighborhood community garden has become a destination, offering popular summertime concerts. Just up Old Buncombe Road (and also U.S. 276, better known as Poinsett Highway) is Furman University. The 800-acre oak-lined campus is open to the public and is a perfect spot for lakeside picnics, walks on the 1.5-mile trail around the campus lake or quiet reflection in the Asian garden.

Places to Go Paris Mountain State Park is a great place to spend spring, summer or autumn afternoons. Walk a trail, get out on Lake Placid or sign up for an educational event. Fourth Saturday programs throughout the year offer guided hikes and talks on a variety of local flora and fauna. Go-to People

Locally Produced Beer and Spirits Easy To Find LINDSEY HOWERTON-HASTINGS, CHUCK MILTEER

Contributing Writers

GETTY IMAGES

The Upstate is teeming with breweries and cool places to have a local beer, and several new breweries have opened in the past year. Breweries are particularly enjoyable on warm weekend days, and most in this area work with food trucks to be sure there is also food available to go with your drink. Many breweries are dog- and kid-friendly, but call in advance to be sure special events aren’t causing the rules to change. Besides beers, a recent trend has been craft distilleries, which offer (legal, non-blindness inducing) moonshine as well as aged whiskeys, gins and even rums. A sampling of breweries can be found on page 70.

Dark Corner Distillery Birds Fly South Ale Project Birds Fly South has a great combination of location, atmosphere and a huge variety of beer. The brews are inventive without feeling overly strange, and are offered in tasting sizes so you can test out a few. The inside of the brewery features crafted wood furniture and low lighting, but the highlight is outside: The grounds at Hampton Station, which feature picnic tables and outdoor seating, as well as a big green space for picnic blankets. In warmer weather, local ice pops from King of Pops are often available, and there’s almost always a food truck near the building for lunch or dinner. As a bonus, BFS is next door to White Duck Taco and is in a courtyard with a yoga studio, axe throwing studio and several local artists’ spaces. Closed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 4-9 p.m., Friday-Saturday Noon-9 p.m., Sunday Noon-6 p.m.;

If you’re not in the mood for beer, you can try something a little stronger with a tasting at this Main Street micro distillery and showroom. The offerings include whiskeys, gin, absinthe and good old-fashioned moonshine. The Dark Corner name pays homage to the northeast corner of Greenville County that was a traditional home of spirits cooked up by the light of the moon. Monday-Saturday 11 a.m.-7 p.m. 14 S. Main St., Greenville darkcornerdistillery.com

Quest Brewing Co. Small but mighty, Quest Brewing Company is a favorite among local beer lovers. Weekly events such as yoga, trivia, and live music mean there’s something going on almost every day at this brewery, which is nestled at the end of the crosswind runway at Greenville’s Downtown Airport. Quest’s Ponce Cucumber Jalapeno Saison won a gold medal award and beers are available for drinking in the tap room as well as to take home in bottles, cans, and growlers. Food trucks are often available for meals and dogs and children are always welcome. Closed Monday, Tuesday 4-8 p.m., Wednesday-Thursday 4-9 p.m., Friday 3-9 p.m., Saturday Noon-9 p.m., Sunday 1-6 p.m.

Brewery 85 Brewery 85, named for its easy proximity to I-85, features beers on tap, a fun environment for families, friends, and dogs, packaged snacks for purchase. The location is often used for local charity events and bands are often playing well into the evening. Beer can be purchased to take home in cans or growlers. Craft beers like Brewery 85 are intentionally canned instead of bottled because of improved shelf life.Closed Monday-Tuesday, Wednesday-Friday 4-9 p.m., Saturday-Sunday Noon-8 p.m.

The Downtown TR distillery makes small batches of moonshine, rum and whiskeys. There are tastings available (reservations requested) that include the distillery’s products and a host of moonshine-flavored snacks and small bites. Eighth State Brewing Co. In the historic Claussen Bakery building on Augusta Street, the brewmasters are as creative as the Pazdan-Smith architects upstairs. Beers and ales are blended with or aged over fruits and various other ingredients and are often appropriately colorful. Not surprising, perhaps, since the brewery’s name is derived from Timothy Leary’s model for expanded consciousness. Food offerings include pizza and sandwiches constructed on Swamp Rabbit Grocery Stecca bread and are available inside or on the dog-friendly terrace. CAMPUSES TO KNOW Widely Varied College and University Programs Available Across Area CHUCK MILTEER

Contributing Writer

Clemson University and USC Upstate are the closest main campuses of state universities to Greenville, but there are many choices for post-high school education, both in Greenville and nearby. Clemson’s Graduate Business (MBA) program operates primarily out of the One building in Downtown Greenville and the University’s Engineering school operates the International Center For Automotive Research (CUICAR) on a 250-acre campus located on I-85 near Laurens Road in Greenville. Founded in 1826, Furman University, the first private institution of higher learning in South Carolina, was once located in Downtown Greenville until it moved to its current campus off U.S. 25 near Travelers Rest in 1958. Today, about 3,000 students attend Furman, which is highly rated among private liberal arts colleges.

Bob Jones University is a nondenominational Evangelical Christian university with about 3,000 students, located close to Downtown on Wade Hampton Boulevard. North Greenville University is a Southern Baptist Conventionaffiliated university of about 2,500 students with its main campus in Tigerville, in Northern Greenville County. Clemson, Bob Jones and Furman, along with USC Upstate, Converse College, Anderson University and Greenville Tech offer programs and classes through the University Center, located on Pleasantburg Drive about 10 minutes from Downtown. Greenville Tech, with about 13,000 students on 5 different campuses, is one of the largest of the state’s community colleges. It offers two-year degrees and technical training as well as opportunities for students to take freshman- and sophomore-level classes and then transfer to one of the state’s 4-year universities. EXPLORE

Travelers Rest and North Greenville Travelers Rest has blossomed into a vibrant, sought-after small town, with restaurants, shopping, outdoor activities, events and more. With Furman University to the south and foothills towns to the north, the area is alive with cycling and hiking adventures and plenty to do at every age – all without leaving the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Venture further into the mountains for incredible vistas, hiking and golf at the string of Cliffs Communities courses along scenic S.C. Route 11.

Places To Go Poinsett Bridge and Campbell’s Covered Bridge: The two historic spans are about 10 miles apart in Northern Greenville County. Poinsett Bridge was constructed in 1820 as part of a road connecting Charleston and Columbia with North Carolina and Tennessee. It is believed to be the oldest surviving bridge in the state. About 100 years newer, Campbell’s Covered Bridge is the only remaining historic covered bridge in the state. Both bridges are surrounded by county parks that are perfect for hiking, picnicking or exploring. Go-to People

George Hincapie: The professional cycling great, who completed a record 16 Tour de France races, settled in Northern Greenville County and established Hotel Domestique, an elegant, European-style inn, cycling and dining destination and event space. Hincapie says he chose the region as a personal training arena because of its resemblance to the Alpine climbs and rolling hills he grew to love in Europe.

BIKE, WALK OR HOP The Swamp Rabbit Trail Since it opened a decade ago, the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail has been a main cycling and walking connection between Greenville and Travelers Rest. Much of the 22-mile paved greenway is built on a historic rail bed and it meanders along the Reedy River for more than two miles through Downtown Greenville. Businesses have sprung up at many locations just a hop off the path, and now hungry and thirsty riders or walkers have many choices for a stop and grab a cold beer, an ice cream cone, or a full meal. There is more information and an interactive map showing the location of parking, restrooms and water stations at greenvillerec. com/prisma-health-swamp-rabbit-trail.

TRAIL’S END... BEGINNING The

OR

route runs behind and beside a slew of restaurants and shops in Travelers Rest – stop for coffee, ice cream, tacos, pizza ... and plenty of options for restrooms and water.

ON CAMPUS Plenty of parking at each end of the Furman University campus. The trail runs along the edge of the university’s Golf Course, before taking up a route along the Reedy River. EAT, REST... & THROW AXES?

Once you pass under Cedar Lane Road, stop off at the trailside recreation area at the Swamp Rabbit Cafe or take a spur off the trail to Hampton Station, where there is coffee, tacos, Birds Fly South beer and a little competitive axe throwing – honest, it’s a thing.

THE NEXT BIG THING

Pass under the main north-south railroad line, then past the site of Unity Park, under development just north of downtown. Lots and lots of downtown apartments have been built along the trailside or within a block or two.

WATERFALLS & WATERSIDE

route takes you through the heart of downtown and then into Cleveland Park.

ANOTHER CAMPUS & A GAP Pass by Greenville Tech and then the temporary route sends you through the Parkins Mill Neighborhood to connect with the southern-most section.

PLAY BALL! OR TAKE NATURE WALK As the

route reaches its southern end in Conestee Nature Park, there’s plenty of side trails through wetlands – and playgrounds, ballfields, a dog park and parking, lots of parking.

HIT THE TRAIL Paris Mountain to Table Rock, these hikes show off the Upstate’s natural beauty Neil Shurley

Contributing Writer

When it comes to hiking, as with so many things, the Upstate truly has an embarrassment of riches. The Carolina foothills surround us to the north and west, and within those green mountains are a myriad of trails close enough to reach in a day but varied enough to stimulate a lifetime of exploration. Some local hikes, featured on the following pages, from easy to very strenuous. Whichever one you choose, don’t forget to bring a camera, a lot of water, a couple of snacks, and your sense of adventure.

Sulphur Springs (Paris Mountain State Park) For locals, Paris Mountain is sometimes too easily forgotten. Close and familiar, with a large lakefront area perfect for family get-togethers, it’s remembered as a place of elementary school field trips and childfriendly nature walks. But within the park’s 1,500 acres lie numerous trails that can challenge hikers and even experienced mountain bikers. “There are several trails in the area that are mapped and well-marked, especially in the back part of the park,” says Durden Collins. He and his wife, Ruth, began hiking in earnest after he retired four years ago. “We went on a five-mile hike there a few months ago and it was great.” Collins suggests going on a weekday to avoid the occasional crowds. While the loop around Lake Placid is the most level and accommodating to folks who want nothing more than a nice walk, Collins recommends Sulphur Springs trail as the best loop. A moderate hike of nearly four miles, Sulphur Springs meanders past several tranquil springs and the old Greenville water reservoir while affording ample opportunities to see wildlife habitats over a nice variety of terrains. 2401 State Park Rd, Greenville, SC. $5 adults; $3.25 SC seniors (age 65 & older); $3/ child age 6-15; Free for children 5 and younger. Caesars Head Overlook (Caesars Head State Park) Head up Highway 276 to see the iconic view from Caesars Head. An easily accessible granitic gneiss outcropping atop the Blue Ridge Escarpment, Caesars Head offers a spectacular view all year long, but you’ll be especially rewarded in the fall when the surrounding leaves change color. Another autumn highlight is the Hawk Watch program, from September to late November, as thousands of migrating raptors, including hawks, falcons, and eagles, swoop and glide over the area. There are plenty of other trails to explore around Caesars Head, including the four-mile round trip Raven Cliff Falls trail and a longer path that leads to a suspension bridge above the falls. This park is truly a must-see. 8155 Geer Hwy, Cleveland, SC. $2 adults; $1.25 SC seniors; age 15 & younger free . Hours 9am9pm, daily during daylight saving time and 9am-6pm, daily, the remainder of the year. Trails close one hour before dark, year round. Foothills Trail (Jocassee Gorges) Foothills Trail traverses almost 80 miles of gorgeous land between Oconee and Table Rock state parks. With spectacular waterfalls, deep gorges and rare plants, this backcountry treasure is full of rewards. “Hiking any part of the Foothills Trail is a hidden gem,” says Susan McLarty, a local hiking enthusiast. McLarty and her family have explored numerous places along the trail, particularly appreciating that it’s not heavily traveled. “This area has unique geography with heavy rainfall creating a temperate rain forest,” says McLarty. “The area is home to many rare plant species. And the Foothills Trail continues on to the SC Trout Hatchery. It’s a challenging and remote area, but trails are well marked and maintained.” McLarty also recommends a visit to the new Gorges State Park Visitor Center in Sapphire, NC as a great first point of contact. “This gives you easy access to Keowee Toxaway, Horsepasture and Turtleback Falls,” she says. “The visitor center is expansive with museum-quality exhibits, along with picnic grounds and shelters. There are even short trails around the visitors center.” Gorges State Park Visitor Center , 976 Grassy Ridge Rd, Sapphire, NC. Major trailheads are also located at Table Rock State Park, US 178, SC 130, SC 107, and Oconee State Park. Fees vary depending on where you enter. Table Rock (Table Rock State Park) You can see the granite dome of Table Rock from miles away. But you haven’t seen anything until you’ve climbed up 2,000 feet to the summit and looked back out the other way. “You get out on top and you have 360-degree views,” says Mac Stone. “It’s a strenuous hike, but when you get to the top you have a view of the Piedmont and the Foothills and everything. You’re really climbing to the top of the mountain.” The 3.6-mile hike is rugged, offering an ascent through an open forest and on through a field of giant boulders and across several creeks. Just before the two-mile marker, stop at the wooden shelter for a great view and a nice rest before continuing past Governor’s Rock to the summit. Then spread out your snacks and enjoy the surrounding beauty. 158 Ellison Ln, Pickens, SC. $5 adults; $3.25 SC seniors (age 65 & older); $3 children ages 6-15; ages 5 and under, free. Looking for more hiking ideas or want to join a group hike? Check out the Greenville Natural History Association (GHNA) Hiking Club at greenvillehiking.com.

Rainbow Falls (Jones Gap State Park) Rainbow Falls Trail is a steep, strenuous, 5-mile (round trip) hike inside Jones Gap State Park. You’ll work up a sweat as you cross foot bridges and ascend some 1,200 feet, but it’s well worth the effort. At the end of the trail you’ll find a gorgeous, 100-foot waterfall plunging over a granite cliff. That’s Rainbow Falls. “The trail ends at the big punchbowl waterfall that just cascades down,” says Mac Stone. “It’s beautiful.” Jones Gap is also well known for bird watching, fishing, and a network of hiking trails, some of which lead to other waterfalls. After you’ve experienced Rainbow Falls and feel you are ready for an even bigger challenge, try the 12-mile Rim of the Gap. But be warned - it’s not for the faint of heart. 301 Jones Gap Rd, Marietta, SC. $5 adults; $3.25 SC seniors (age 65 & older); $3 children ages 6-15; ages 5 and under, free. Hours are 9 a.m. - 9 p.m., daily, during daylight saving time and 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., daily, the remainder of the year. Trails close one hour before dark, year-round. UPSTATE CLIMATE We’re Pretty Well Insulated from Weather and Other Natural Disasters

CHUCK MILTEER

Contributing Writer

Far enough inland from the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico to be protected from most tropical storms and hurricanes, and sheltered from most arctic blasts by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Greenville and the Upstate of South Carolina have Goldilocks weather – not too hot, not too cold, not too wet or dry and seldom too severe. That’s not to say that there is never potentially dangerous weather here or that the hottest summer days aren’t sometimes oppressive, but the climate is generally benign. While winters are generally not too cold, with only a couple days of measurable snowfall on average, the Upstate has four distinct seasons. Spring sees average high temperatures generally starting off in the 60s and rising to about 80 before the start of Summer. The Upstate really has no wet or dry season, unlike most of the rest of South Carolina. Rain in Summer is mostly the result of frequent afternoon thunderstorms, while precipitation in Winter is steadier, but somewhat less frequent. While Summer is not nearly as hot and humid

here as in the central part of the state, average high temperatures in June, July and August flirt with 90 degrees, but low temperatures averaging in the 60s and low 70s keep air conditioning units from having to run full-blast every day. There are rarely more than a few days a year over 100. Winter low temperatures often dip into the 30s with highs averaging about 50, but there are only a few days a year where the temperature doesn’t rise above freezing. The greatest risk of severe weather in the Upstate is from tornadoes, but they are relatively rare and rarely high on the scale for destructiveness, especially compared with other parts of the South. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can bring a threat of high winds and lightning. Tropical storm and remnants of hurricanes pass over occasionally, usually the tail end of named storms that bring heavy rain and some flooding. In terms of other potential natural disasters, the Upstate is pretty well insulated. The region is considered a low risk for major earthquakes, though small quakes are sometimes centered in the far western corner of the state.

Lightning strikes over Fluor Field at the West End after a severe thunderstorm hit the area last year. FILE PHOTO

EXPLORE Taylors and Greer Taylors and Greer are located on the eastern side of Greenville County. The unincorporated community of Taylors is building a reputation as an arts hub, with local residents finding that they are in a prime location for easy access to activities across the county. Greer maintains a small-town charm in a vibrant downtown, while the area’s prime role in the automotive industry brings an international flair. The city continues to refine the streetscape of the 12-squareblock area known as Greer Station.

Places to Go

The 12-acre Greer City Park in downtown Greer includes an amphitheater, two miles of walking trails and more. Each summer, the park hosts Greer Idol, a popular singing competition that showcases local talent as part of a free concert series.

Go-to People

Rosylin Weston: The longtime spokeswoman for GSP Airport set out on her own in 2018 after nearly 20 years. She opened her own communications and public relations firm in Greer and now RAWeston Communications has clients across the region.

Get to Know Taylors Mill, which is becoming a hidden-gem destination,

with seasonal events, food, model trains, art and more, including live music and craft beer at 13 Stripes Brewery and pizza and pub food at the Farehouse. The mill began operations in 1924 as Southern Bleachery and expanded to include a massive printworks. After closing in 1965, the huge complex sat mostly empty until 2015, when Caleb Lewis and Greg Cotton bought it and began redevelopment. A little out of the way, but worth the search.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS You won’t have to go far to find plenty of natural beauty Donna Isbell Walker

The Greenville News USA TODAY NETWORK – SOUTH CAROLINA

Greenville is awash in natural beauty, from parks in and close to the city to spectacular vistas as you head to the Blue Ridge mountains nearby. While you won’t have to leave Downtown to hop on the Swamp Rabbit Trail or explore Cleveland Park, a short drive will offer other great places to have a picnic, take a hike, or simply enjoy the view. A few options can be found on page 102.

The Greenville Zoo may be the crowning jewel of the 122acre park, but it’s far from the only reason to visit. Nestled next to the Reedy River, the park boasts a couple of popular playgrounds, volleyball and tennis courts, fitness trails, and picnic shelters. Don’t miss the birdwatcher-friendly Fernwood Nature Trail, the Rock Quarry Garden, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the F-86 Sabre plane that pays tribute to Major Rudolph Anderson Jr., who was shot down and killed during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In addition, Cleveland Park connects to downtown Greenville’s Falls Park and Cancer Survivors Park. Open 8 a.m.-9 p.m. daily. greenvillesc.gov

Caesars Head State Park Breathtaking is the only way to describe the vista from Caesars Head. The granite outcropping affords a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The park is also home to Raven Cliff Falls, South Carolina’s tallest waterfall. During the autumn months, visitors can watch the hawk migration as the birds pass through the park on their way south for the winter. Open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. daily during Daylight Saving Time, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. the rest of the year. southcarolinaparks.com/caesars-head

Lake Conestee Nature Park The 400 acres of Lake Conestee Nature Park are a bird-watcher’s paradise; more than 200 bird species make their home there. But that’s not all there is to recommend this official wildlife sanctuary, that features both forest and wetlands, plus three miles of the Reedy River. Visitors might catch a glimpse of raccoons, otters, beavers, or foxes in the park. For hiking fans, there are six miles of natural-surface trails and six miles of paved trails, plus boardwalks and bog walks. And there’s plenty of history to learn about the area, once home to paper mills and an armory, as well as a hand-hewn stone dam that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park’s main entrance is on Mauldin Road, but there are entry points at other trailheads. Open daily sunrise to sunset. lakeconesteenaturepark.com

Legacy Park Not too far from the hustle and bustle of Woodruff Road is a small park modeled after New York City’s Central Park. The 20-acre park, opened in 2008 in the Verdae area, offers a water feature where kids can get their feet wet, volleyball, paths for walking or riding a bike, playground, and picnic shelters. It may be less familiar than places like Falls Park or Cleveland Park, but Legacy has a large core of dedicated fans who come out for pickup games, picnics, or to walk their dogs. greenvillesc. gov

YMCA Camp Greenville While this camp has been a summer destination for thousands of kids over the past century, there’s one element of YMCA Camp Greenville that lives up to its name and more. The camp’s mountaintop chapel is called Pretty Place, possibly an understatement. The front of the openair Fred W. Symmes Chapel looks out over and into the surrounding mountains. It’s one of the loveliest views in all of the Upstate. It’s a popular spot for weddings, hosts an Easter sunrise service each year and is open to the public much of the time. HAVE PUP, WILL TRAVEL Playtime to Mealtime, Dogs and their People Can Find Plenty to Do Margaret Milteer Contributing Writer

From dog-friendly breweries and restaurant patios to meetups with other dog-owners and dog parks, Greenville has a lot to offer to canines and their human companions. Dogs searching for a group play experience while their owners run errands or do boring human things, Greenville has a ton of doggy-daycare options. Close to the downtown scene are the Noble Dog Hotel and Dog Culture. Near the Haywood Mall, there’s Camp Bow Wow and Pet Paradise and in the Mauldin area there’s Astro Kennels and the Reedy Rover Pet Resort. Most doggy daycares do require vaccinations and an interview process. Make sure your human calls first to double check. For pups eager for an adventure on their person’s day off, Greenville has some great places to try! Looking for a more leisurely walk? Try a stroll downtown with lots of stops at Greenville’s dog friendly shops. In the mood for some more serious exercise without as many distractions? Head over to the Swamp Rabbit Trail, which runs from downtown to Travelers Rest and more. And for a more woodsy adventure, Paris Mountain State Park always welcomes well-behaved pups! If the two of you are hard-core adventurers, Greenville sits at the foot of the Blue Ridge and there are many great trails and

breathtaking views. If on-leash isn’t your thing, Greenville has some great dog parks! Two of the most popular are the Pavilion Dog Park off East North Street and Conestee Dog Park near Conestee Nature Park off Mauldin Road. The Nature Park also has some beautiful dog friendly trails for you to explore. After a long day of play or a great adventure, you both deserve a shady spot, a bowl of cold water (or a cold glass of whatever it is those humans seem to like) and maybe something to eat. There are dog friendly breweries and restaurants all over. Many restaurants in downtown Greenville have outdoor seating, where tired pups can relax while their people drink and dine. In Travelers Rest, just off of the Swamp Rabbit Trail, restaurants like Sidewall Pizza and Farm House Tacos have large dog friendly seating areas. As for breweries, there are several options. Places like Community Tap and Quest Brewing have dog friendly areas outside. According to bringfido.com, other breweries such as Liability Brewing, Pour Taproom and Thomas Creek Brewery allow pups indoors. Unleashed Dog Bar includes a dog park, but pups do need to pay to enter and have updated vaccinations (and a way to prove it). If something other than a beer would really hit the spot, WXYZ Lounge at the Aloft Hotel is also an option.

SHOP AND SNIFF DOWNTOWN

RELAX ON THE LAWN AT HAMPTON STATION

Not only is the downtown area a great place to walk, there’s also a number of dog friendly shops as well as outdoor eating areas. Paw Paws is a great place to stop. The Greenville-based company makes collars, leashes, harnesses and more. Stop in and pick up a dog cookie or two, or even a tail-wagging good birthday cake! Wellbehaved dogs are also welcome at Mast General Store.

Hampton Station is a great destination for pups and their humans. Dogs can hang out while their people grab a beer at Birds Fly South, accompany them while they throw axes at Craft Axe Throwing and then shop for a little souvenir or some new accessories at the Noble Dog Hotel. The hotel also hosts meetups for different dog breeds each month. The centerpiece of Hampton Station is the large lawn, that is always a popular gathering spot Thursdays-Sundays.

EXPLORE The Eastside The first question, even for locals, is “what exactly is the Eastside?” Answers vary, but most folks agree that it includes the chain of neighborhoods, subdivisions and shopping areas bounded roughly by I-385, I-85 and somewhere between Wade Hampton Boulevard and East North Street. If it’s not Downtown, Taylors, Greer or Simpsonville, it’s the Eastside. For shopping and dining, the best bets are at Pelham Road and I-85, but the Haywood Mall area and Woodruff Road are both nearby across I-385. Downtown Greenville is 15 minutes or less from most parts of the Eastside.

Places To Go Parks and recreation options are liberally dotted across the area, including Butler Springs Park for tennis and baseball, The Pavillion and Brushy Creek complexes for soccer, tennis and ice skating and the Eastside YMCA for swimming and a little bit of everything else. Golfers have a range of choices nearby including par-3 and nine-hole courses as well as the mammoth three-level Top Golf facility just across I-85 near Pelham Road and the championship-quality Thornblade Club. Go-To People

The Haas Family: Golf is the family business. Jay Hass and son Bill are multiple PGA Tour event-winners who call Greenville their hometown. The family operates Hass Family Golf training center on Pelham Road, where golfers of all levels can practice their swing and improve their shots. Jay Haas Jr. leads the teaching staff.

HEALTH CARE Majority of Hospitals, Other Facilities Under Prisma, Bon Secours Umbrellas CHUCK MILTEER

Contributing Writer

Greenville has two main health systems that operate the vast majority of hospital space, surgery and treatment centers, urgent care centers and doctors’ offices. Both systems have also recently undergone corporate mergers. Prisma Health Upstate was formed when Greenville Health System merged with Palmetto Health of Columbia late last year. Bon Secours, the Catholic hospital system that operates the St. Francis Hospital system here, merged with Mercy Health, though it will

continue to have the same name here. In addition to its flagship hospital off Grove Road in Greenville, Prisma operates hospitals in Travelers Rest, Greer and Simpsonville as well the orthopedic and obstetrics-focused Patewood Hospital on the Eastside. St. Francis has its main hospital in Downtown Greenville as well as St. Francis Eastside, also in the Patewood area. Prisma has a string of five urgent care centers under the MD360 label. St. Francis operates its clinics under the AFC Urgent Care name. Some of the primary locations for the two systems are listed on page 110.

THINGS TO DO WITH KIDS Indoors & Out, Free & Not-So-Much, It’s Easy to Find a Good Option Danielle Roland

The Greenville News USA TODAY NETWORK – SOUTH CAROLINA

When the kids need a change of scenery or something to do, Upstate parents can always find an activity to participate in, a club to join or just a someplace to get out of the house. If your goal is to pack a lunch and head out, but incur as little expense as possible, the Upstate has you covered. There are any number of places to entertain and educate without spending a dime. There are indoor options as well, some free, some not so much. If the goal is to cool off on a hot summer day, there are a bucketful of fountains and splash pads. Some of the many options are below and on page 114.

OUTDOORS AND FREE The Children’s Garden at Linky Stone Park

During the weekday daylight hours, the center is open to simply park and walk the nature trails. Along the milelong paved trail is a music area, different types of rocks, a giant Triceratops, butterfly area, pond, bird watching area, arboretum and several play structures. ropermountain.org

Runway Park

Runway Park is a privately owned and maintained 1.4 acre park at the Greenville Downtown Airport (GMU). Walk or ride around the perimeter path or pretend to take off on the mini-runways. There are playground sets for multiple age groups as well as climbing structures and an amphitheater style seating area to watch planes take off and land. There are informational signs along the fences and ample seating, as well as bathrooms and a picnic shelter that is available when it is not rented for groups. greenvilledowntownairport.com/RunwayParkatGMU

EXPLORE

The Golden Strip Incredible growth and small-town charm can indeed go handin-hand. The Golden Strip’s three cities — Mauldin, Simpsonville and Fountain Inn — in the southeastern part of Greenville County are growing for the future and cultivating their individual identities. The name likely refers to when public water lines were extended south through Fountain Inn, creating a “Golden Strip” of potential developable land on the map. The nearby Five Forks area is booming with new residential development and rapid commercial growth.

Places to Go The Mauldin Cultural Center has become a growing part of the

Golden Strip’s arts scene, with classes for all ages, a youth theater program, concerts, comedy and more. An amphitheater and outdoor art installations let visitors take advantage of beautiful summer nights for all sorts of events.

Go-to People

Shawn Bell, Fountain Inn City Administrator since 2017. At 33, he’s already in his third public administration job in South Carolina. Bell’s latest project for the city is creating a splash pad fountain in the downtown area and remodeling the city’s Woodside Park and constructing a trail to connect it with Fairview Street Park.

Get to Know

Lake Conestee Nature Park -- A natural hideaway in the middle of commercial bustle. The park covers 400 acres on the Reedy River and is teeming with wildlife and restored natural habitat. Interpretative signs along the trails tell the story of the park and its wild residents.

FESTIVAL SEASON Art, Music and Food… Lots of Food Donna Isbell Walker

The Greenville News USA TODAY NETWORK – SOUTH CAROLINA

Artisphere, Presented by TD Bank May means downtown Greenville blossoming with art. The annual Artisphere festival turns Main Street and its surroundings to an artists’ colony of sorts. The festival spotlights visual, performing and culinary arts. More than 130 visual artists, chosen by jury process, are featured on Artists Row, where they showcase and sell their work. There are also street performers, live music and food from local restaurants. May 10-12, 2019, Main Street in Downtown Greenville artisphere.org

Greenville Greek Festival One of Greenville’s favorite festivals each year comes in May and celebrates Greek culture … especially Greek food. Served indoors, outdoors, or at a drive-through lane, there are familiar items like gyros and souvlaki, and lots of other dishes, including moussaka, keftedes, and spanakopita, plus loads of Greek pastries. Entertainment includes traditional Greek music and dance and members of St. George offer tours of the ornately adorned church. May 16-19, 2019, St. George Greek Orthodox Church greekforaday.com

Gallabrae – Greenville Scottish Games The Upstate celebrates its Highland heritage each year on Memorial Day weekend. The games feature heavy athletics, which means muscular men in kilts tossing cabers, hammers and stones; pipe-band competitions; a military salute; border collies; and British cars. The festival always kicks off the night before with the Great Scot! Parade in downtown Greenville. May 24-25, 2019, Parade, downtown Greenville, games, Furman University, gallabrae.com

Summer on Augusta This began nearly 20 years ago as Shaggin’ on Augusta, a tribute to South Carolina’s official state dance. But in recent years, it’s expanded to a four-day festival that celebrates food, music, and the Augusta Road atmosphere. An evening of shag dancing is still part of the festivities, but there’s also a block party, the dog-friendly Hound Dog Social, and a tomatopie contest. And to top it off, there are sales and specials at Augusta Road businesses. June 20-23, 2019, All along Augusta Road onlyonaugusta.com/summer-on-augusta

Greenville Chautauqua Historical figures come to life, and even answer the audience’s questions, at Greenville’s annual literary festival. Each year, there’s a different theme -- 2019’s is “It’s Revolutionary!” – This year, the festival will spotlight everyone’s favorite Broadway Ten-Dollar Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton and other historical re-enactors, who immerse themselves in the lives of their characters. There are performances all around town during the summer, and occasional sessions during the winter months. Over the years, the festival has spotlighted everyone from Harriet Tubman to Walt Disney, Mark Twain to Harry Houdini, Amelia Earhart to Herman Melville. June 14-23, 2019, Various locations around the Upstate greenvillechautauqua.org

BB&T Fall for Greenville Food and live music are the hallmarks of the Grandaddy of Greenville Festivals. More than 40 restaurants offer tastes of their menus, and there’s music all weekend. Count on a few name acts and scads of local artists on a half-dozen stages. There are culinary demonstrations, competitions, and carnival rides for the kids. ABUNDANT EDUCATIONAL CHOICES Public, Charter and Private, Schools Offer Quality and Variety CHUCK MILTEER

Contributing Writer

Greenville County’s school district is the largest in the state and one of the 50 largest in the nation. The district’s more than 76,000 students attend 84 elementary, middle and high schools and another dozen specialized career training and other learning centers. Those school buildings are all relatively new or newly renovated, with an average age of 13 years. About 25% of county schools are National Blue Ribbon or Palmetto’s Finest Schools, accolades given for top academic performance. And in the most recent statewide evaluations, Greenville County schools outperformed the state, with 21% of county schools rated excellent, the top rating. The district offers many options for school choice and more than 12,000 of the school system’s students attend a county school other than the one their home address is zoned for. The district has 11 magnet academies, at the elementary, middle school and high school levels, offering studies in communications, languages, the arts, and science and mathematics. The district also offers gifted and talented programs, International Baccalaureate studies at all grade levels, career technology, Fine Arts and other specialized programs. Greenville County Schools is one of only a handful of school districts across the country to be named a Google for Education Reference District, reserved for districts that demonstrate innovative use of technology. “Today’s educational environment requires us to think differently in order to meet the needs of our students,” said Jeff McCoy, the district’s Associate Superintendent for Academics. “Preparing students to be innovative thinkers, creative problem solvers,

and high-level collaborators is key to their future success in their chosen career. Personalized learning changes the way teachers teach and how students learn.” As part of the Google program, the district is issuing Chromebook laptops to students in grades 3-12, and by 2020 every student should have one. The district also received a grant to provide Wi-Fi on every school bus so students can focus on learning while traveling to and from school. In addition to Greenville’s public school district, students in the county can opt for publicly funded, tuition-free charter schools or tuition-charging private and parochial schools. More than 11,500 Greenville County students take one of those two options, about 4,000 in charter schools and about 7,500. Three charter high schools are on or adjacent to campuses of Greenville Tech. Most private schools in the area have some religious affiliation, whether it is denominational or related to an individual church.

PROTECT AND SERVE Greenville County Served By Numerous Law Enforcement And Emergency Service Agencies CHUCK MILTEER

Contributing Writer

As you drive around the various cites and towns of Greenville County, you’ll see vehicles representing many different public safety, fire and rescue departments. More than 1,100 law-enforcement professionals are working to keep the county’s half million residents safe and secure. The largest and widest-ranging agency is the Greenville County Sheriff ’s office, which numbers more than 580 deputies, commanders and support personnel. Each of the county’s six incorporated cities (Greenville, Greer, Simpsonville, Mauldin, Fountain Inn and Travelers Rest) has its own police department and the Greenville County Public Safety department provides support

for those agencies as well as police on the campuses of Furman University, Greenville Tech and the Prisma Greenville Health System. The Sheriff ’s Office and City of Greenville Police, with its nearly 250 officers, commanders and support personnel, are headquartered at the county Law Enforcement Center at the end of I-385 in Downtown Greenville. In case of a medical emergency, Greenville County operates a county-wide EMS system, with more than 200 paramedics and support personnel stationed across the county. Fire protection is a much more localized service. Though there are more than 1,000 firefighters working in the county, they serve two dozen different fire departments and 45 fire stations that span from Dunklin to Glassy Mountain.
