President, Board of Directors Jarrett Coco is an attorney with Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP. He practices in the firm’s Columbia office in the areas of business litigation, pharmaceutical and medical device litigation, e-discovery and litigation readiness, and records and document management.

Jarrett graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law and Mercyhurst College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in music.

Rhonda P. Hunsinger Executive Director Rhonda Hunsinger has served as the S.C. Phil’s executive director since 2002, having joined as development director in 1998. She is an active member of the League of American Orchestras, recently serving on its board of directors. Ms. Hunsinger earned her Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Communication and Master of Liberal Studies from Rollins College and has 32 years’ experience in fundraising and nonprofit management.

Did you know that in addition to being one of the largest cultural organizations in Columbia, the S.C. Philharmonic is also an economic driver for our city? Consider that with an estimated attendance of 12,000 annually, 82% of those patrons – 10,000 people - dine downtown before and after S.C. Phil events at the Koger Center. These concerts also generate over 500 overnight stays in hotels annually, including musicians, patrons and guest artists, making our economic impact close to half a million dollars annually.

While an organization’s economic impact is important, the S.C. Phil’s primary mission is to provide live symphonic music to our community. Education and outreach are vital components of this: • In partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Institute, the SCP presents an annual interactive Link Up concert to more than 5,000 young people, at-risk youth and individuals with specials needs.

• The SCP provides complimentary concert tickets to undeserved and at-risk youth and their families through its Kids to Concerts program. The orchestra emphasizes the educational component of its mission and believes strongly that exposure to the arts is an essential element in helping young people realize their full potential.

• The SCP’s Healing Harmonies program emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach to wellbeing and how music can play an integral part of this process. SCP musicians perform for patients, visitors and employees throughout the Palmetto Healthcare system, at elder care facilities and at the Dorn VA Medical Center. The SCP also offers free tickets to our military veterans through the Vet Tix program.

• During a Conduct the Phil concert, SCP Musicians perform a variety of classical music favorites and everyone conducts! A sign is displayed that reads “CONDUCT US” and passersby are encouraged to step on the podium and take the baton. This program has been held at the SC State Fair, Soda City Market, the State House grounds and more. The SCP also visits individuals and groups who otherwise might not experience live music, such as Babcock Center, the SC Department of Juvenile Justice, Epworth Children’s Home and Transitions Homeless Center.

• Music for a Cause provides support and builds relationships with other non-profits. Organizations selected to participate during the season include those that support human services, education, animal welfare, health and environmental conservation. The charities are provided concert tickets to sell as a fund-raiser and opportunities to promote their mission to SCP audiences.

At the SC Phil, we believe it is very important to find ways to give back to our community. A vibrant arts district leads to a stronger business community because it makes Columbia a more desirable place to live and do business. Morihiko Nakahara celebrates his 11th season with the S.C. Philharmonic during the 2018/2019 season. Additionally, Nakahara serves as resident conductor of the Spokane Symphony Orchestra and Director of Orchestral Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he conducts the university orchestras and guides the graduate program in orchestral conducting.

Known for his charismatic presence on and off the podium, innovative and audience-friendly programming skills and thoughtful interpretations of both standard and contemporary repertoire, Nakahara was featured in the League of American Orchestra’s prestigious Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview in March 2005. Recent guest conducting engagements include appearances with the Buffalo Philharmonic, symphonies of Oregon, Jacksonville, Charleston, Chattanooga, Lansing, Peoria, and Green Bay, as well as with the Chicago Pro Musica. Recipient of the David Effron Conducting Fellowship at the Chautauqua Institution in 1999, he recently returned to guest conduct the Music School Festival Orchestra there.

Equally at home in a wide variety of musical styles and concert formats, Nakahara has collaborated with Chris Botti, BĂŠla Fleck & the Flecktones, Edgar Meyer, Brandi Carlile, Pink Martini, Sergio Mendes, and Roby Lakatos, to name a few. A tireless champion for the music of our times, Nakahara recently led world premieres of works by Joan Tower, Dan Visconti, and John Fitz Rogers, and has led numerous U.S. premieres of works by Japanese composers. A passionate believer in audience development and music education for all, Nakahara is a popular clinician, guest conductor, and lecturer at various educational institutions. As a personable ambassador for classical music, he is regularly featured on local media outlets, and speaks about wide ranging topics including arts advocacy, leadership and management, and economic development at local businesses and service organizations.

A native of Kagoshima, Japan, Nakahara holds degrees from Andrews University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He previously served as associate conductor of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, music director of the Holland Symphony Orchestra (Mich.), and served on the faculty at Eastern Washington and Andrews Universities.

Nakahara, his wife Lesley Hogg, and their cat Junichi reside in Northampton, Massachusetts.

concertmaster mary lee taylor kinosian with the Redwood Symphony) and later in Nashville, Tenn. (as Principal Second Violin with Nashville Symphony Orchestra) before returning to Columbia in 1996. Since that time she has played numerous solo engagements with the S.C. Phil, including Kurt Weill’s Violin Concerto and Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5.

She has been both violinist and composer for the Upton Trio for 16 years and continues to focus on education outreach with her original trio music, which highlights and fully integrates selected academics in each yearly presentation. She also is currently engaged in the end stages of the composition of a musical “An Extra Penny” with director, writer and producer Cindy Mancini of N.C. She continues to serve as the assistant concertmaster of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra as well, and in addition she serves as concertmaster and personnel manager of the Aiken Symphony.

A native of Columbia, Concertmaster Mary Lee Taylor Kinosian joined the South Carolina Philharmonic (then the Columbia Philharmonic Orchestra) at age 14. After graduating college at USC, she enjoyed a successful career in San Jose, Calif. (with the San Jose Symphony, Midsummer Mozart Festival and as Concertmaster and soloist

2018 Major general robert b. solomon award winners Established in 1996, this award was created to honor Maj. Gen. Solomon’s extraordinary volunteer leadership in the mid-1990s. After retiring from Ft. Jackson, Maj. Gen. Solomon became involved with the S.C. Philharmonic and served as volunteer executive director during a difficult time for the organization. Each spring, the current board president selects up to two persons whose volunteerism reach the levels exemplified

by Solomon. This year’s winners are:

The Symphony League of the S.C. Philharmonic is celebrating its 53rd year of support for the orchestra. We are a group of dedicated volunteers and are passionate about our work. Our fundraisers during the year, along with the Symphony League Endowment, make it possible for us to contribute at the Benefactor Level ($25,000+).

We also support the S.C. Philharmonic’s educational programs: the Link Up program for children, the Youth Orchestras, Carnival of the Animals, Aesop’s Fables, and Adopt-A-Musician; and the Arthur Fraser International Piano Competition at the Southeastern Piano Festival, held every summer at the USC School of Music.

We encourage membership in the Symphony League and invite you to join us to meet and work with us, sharing common interests, organizing our fundraisers, and attending educational general membership meetings in support of music education.
