M.ARCH I SUKKAH

Fall | 2024 |

ARCH 7001 Studio

Whitney Hamaker

In collaboration with M.Arch I Studio

A Sukkah is a beautiful temporary structure built during the Jewish festival of Sukkot, honoring the journey of the Israelites through the desert. With at least three walls and a roof made of natural materials, it creates a welcoming space for gathering, eating, and celebrating this meaningful holiday.

This Sukkah’s minimalist design, with its layered depths and patterns, creates a captivating play of light and shadow that transforms the space throughout the day. Featuring locally sourced bamboo and recycled climbing rope from Cincinnati gyms, it brings a sustainable and community-focused touch to the structure.

HARVESTING FORM

ARCH 7001 Studio

Whitney Hamaker

For my proposal in the Serpentine Pavilion competition, I designed a pavilion inspired by the iconic Miller House in Columbus, Indiana. Mirroring the house’s strict lines and geometric layout, my pavilion is composed of nine distinct segments that together form a cohesive whole. Drawing from the local context, the structure utilizes innovative casting techniques, using compostable corn waste from Indiana to create textured, organic interior surfaces, while the exterior maintains a sleek, minimalist aesthetic.

The design creates a unique, cavernous interior environment, framed by skylights that act as a timepiece, casting light and shadow throughout the day. These skylights also frame the space for exhibits, allowing visiting artists to showcase their work within the pavilion’s sculptural forms. At night, the pavilion transforms into a dynamic performance space, ideal for dance and other live events. The project seamlessly integrates the architectural heritage of the Miller House with the agricultural landscape of Indiana, offering both a contemplative and versatile public space.

GARRET MORGAN MUSEUM

Fall | 2023 |

ARC 355 Studio

In collaboration with Parker Richards

The project is situated in the remnants of the former Bourbon Co. Jailer’s Residence, now in a state of disrepair with a gutted interior and a roofless structure due to a fire. On this site, my partner and I designed a museum dedicated to honoring the inventor Garret Morgan through a series of informative memorial spaces. Embracing inspiration from Wabi-Sabi techniques, our design focuses on exploring the poetics of aging materials, acknowledging and celebrating the beauty found in the passage of time.

CABIN IN THE WOODS

In collaboration with Emma Cockerham

For this project, our imaginary clients sought to develop a rural site out west to cultivate places of solitude in nature within their own “mini village.” The owners are enthusiasts of art and mid-century modern design and desired a home with a strong sense of integrity and simplicity. In order to embrace their new lifestyle, the buildings were designed to contrast and frame the natural landscape of the homestead. On the property, we were tasked to design the main house, carriage house, guest house, warehouse, barn, zen cabin, shed, and folly tower. To develop the mini-village we initially explored the concepts physically and then proceeded digitally to represent the designs of the mid-century modern property.

My design explores the integration of nature within architecture, centering around a lush central courtyard that visually connects every public space.

In the conceptual phase, I developed heliodynamic and thermodynamic model prototyoes and created one-point perspective collages as “de-architecturalized” representations of the Solar Chambers to shape visitor experiences.

This prohect redefines architectural space as a curated journey of framed nature, inviting visitors to seek the next captivating moment within the arboretum or Solar Chambers rather than searching for humanity outdoors.

Inspired by the works of Iris Van Herpen and Toyo Ito Fall | 2021 |

I drew inspiration from Iris Van Herpen’s fashion design to create geometric forms for VR goggles. These goggles enhance the gallery expereince designed for my semester studio project, turning wearers into artistic spectacles within the space. Influenced by Toyo Ito’s “Serpentine Pavilion,” I incorporated layer geometric planes in the gallery walls for captivating light and shadow interactions. The patterns derived from these planes are integrated into the VR glasses, allowing wearers to immerse themselves in virtual artwork displays on the gallery walls’ intricate geometries.

Inspired by the stories of “Alice in Wonderland”

I created collages inspired by the architectural concepts in Alice in Wonderland and then pixelated my final collage, exploring its edges and spatial dimensions. Some volumes were extruded and carved, revealing new interior spaces through boolean operations on the pixels. I also developed a series of animal figures by filling balloons with plaster and shaping them under external forces, drawing inspiration from Wonderland characters. Finally, I combined these elements in a 3D space to create an immersive environment where visitors can experience Alice’s story through an architectural lens.

PART TO WHOLE

by Jean Nouvelle’s Louvre Abu Dhabi

My digital design research focused on the intricate geometric patterns of the iconic Louvre Abu Dhabi dome. One of the most captivating features is the lattice work, which creates stunning shadows and patterns through the repetition of simple shapes. The design reveals new details from different perspectives, offering a dynamic experience for the viewer. In this 3D model study, I laser cut and hatched two pieces to explore how they interact and reflect each other. This study highlights how geometry can change with perspective, revealing the beauty of simplicity through layered repetition.

CUBIC STUDIES

Workshop Series Fall | 2020 |

ARC 151 Studio

Brian Richter

In order to discover the art of fabrication, I was tasked to design a cube that explored multiple boolean opperations. After digitally composing my cubic study, I 3D printed the model in multiple pieces. Thus, further exploring the possibilities of a simple cube. I also learned how to laser cut and build a 3D model by hand during this first year workshop.

Entry for the kiosk design competition for Lexington’s Art on the Town. In collaboration with Faiza Hyder Spring| 2022 |

Heart on the town is a structure that can contain a variety of distint arts and crafts. It’s a magnificent structural piece that allows light to penetrate through the canopy. The glass is placed on certain parts of the kiosk to create a dynamic shadow affect that changes with the sun’s rotation. The shadow of the structure allows it to look like a heart or half of a charm sitting on the street. At night, lights of the kiosk and the streets also illuminate the object creating the intense contours of the design. The seat becomes an essential part of the structure with storage that provides ample room for vendor’s supplies or just the products that they are showcasing.

BIOMORPHIC BEADING

Regina Summers

In my study of Ohio native wildflowers, I examined their structures and forms in nature, using these observations to inspire my creative work. I created graphic prints in Illustrator and Photoshop, blending human and floral elements, and further explored floral-inspired jewelry design using Midjourney. Drawing from my research, I crafted innovative jewelry that reflects nature’s beauty. For my final products, I hand-stitched beads to create intricate pieces inspired by the parametric structure of petals, capturing the ethereal beauty of flowers and the harmony between nature and human artistry.
