It has been a privilege to serve as the Region Commissioner of South Metropolitan Region for the past nine months. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone for welcoming me into this role and a special thank you to Bryan for his remarkable dedication and contributions over the past nine years. Over the past 12 months, our Region has achieved so much, and it is incredibly humbling to witness these ongoing accomplishments. I am immensely proud to work alongside such an impressive group of volunteers.
South Met continues to deliver an exceptional program, host fantastic events, and provide robust support for leaders and Groups, as well as comprehensive training services for our members. We have successfully reintroduced New Leader Welcome sessions, which have significantly impacted the positive integration of new leaders into the culture of South Met and Scouts NSW. The Adventurous Activities team has been extraordinary, offering activities almost every weekend, creating endless opportunities for our youth. Thank you all for your time, dedication, and support of Scouts and the South Met Region.
Our focus remains steadfast on our Youth Members. I remind myself of this purpose when challenges arise. Scouting has taught me invaluable skills, such as motorkhana, basic 4x4 driving and recovery, securing a load in a trailer, lighting a fire, and the joy of camaraderie. The impact we have as adults on our Youth Members is profound and lasting.
Despite a slight dip in membership, our Region is resilient and on the path to recovery. As your Region Commissioner, I am committed to transparency and focused on delivering fun, attractive, affordable, and sustainable Scouting experiences. Change is inevitable, and while not everyone may be on board initially, I believe our approach of frequent Town Halls, detailed email communication, and enhanced use of technology helps everyone understand our direction.
The refreshed Region Team is brimming with energy, drive, and passion for their respective portfolios. Together, we aim to reignite the spirit within our Region. Our initial survey to Group Leaders provided valuable insights into the areas that require immediate support. This has enabled us to begin rebranding our halls with the current Scout logo and colour scheme, making our presence more attractive within the community. We are upgrading halls with LED lighting, fresh paint, and other maintenance improvements to better meet community expectations. Additionally, we are working diligently to secure long-term tenants for our halls, ensuring financial sustainability for the Region. Since the introduction of VenueLife, our camp and hall booking system, we have seen an increase in bookings and income from camps. Significant investments have been made to upgrade Heathcote and Camp Coutts, with more improvements planned.
Looking ahead, FY24/25 promises to be an exciting year. Thank you for joining us on this journey so far, and I look forward to sharing the upcoming year with you. To our frontline leaders, we extend our deepest gratitude. Without you, Scouting would not exist. You deliver our program week in and week out and are the face of Scouting to our parents and members.
After taking on the role of Region Chairperson in January, it has been a busy three months. The Region Executive has focused on increasing our sustainability and processes regarding managing Region property and finances. This work will continue into the next Scouting year.
We are striving to include a broad range of perspectives on the Region Executive, including those of Group Leaders, Group Committee Chairs, and members of our Region Team.
I thank the entire Region Executive for their ongoing support in the Region's administration. I look forward to our work in the year ahead.
I want to give special thanks to our Region Quartermaster Elias. Elias and his team of Rover Scouts have completed many working bees at several of our Scout Halls across the Region since the start of the year, preparing them for their next use. This is often very hard work, but it has made a significant contribution to our Region.
Lastly, I would like to also pass on my thanks to the previous Region Executive for their strong commitment to the management of the Region over many years. I would like to thank all of our fantastic leaders and supporters for their continued hard work and contribution to Scouting across the Region and for supporting the fantastic programs of our youth members.
Metropolitan Region
South Metropolitan Region overall had a successful year for the financial year ending 31 March 2024. While we reported an operating deficit of $25,427, we were able to tick off some major items.
The majority of this deficit can be attributed to some significant Repair and Maintenance work at Region Office and across our Region Halls as well as our Camps & Activity Centres. An increase in Rubbish Collection to allow the continuous clean out of Scout Halls, bad debt write-off and Region Office staff movements.
Towards the back end of the financial year, we transitioned the majority of regular hall hires onto monthly invoices, as well as changing our cost recovery process in an attempt to simplify operations. This has been successful. We have also transitioned all short-term bookings and outbound asset hire to VenueLife, with again, the intent to simplify and streamline the process.
I'd like to thank the work of the previous Region Treasurer and Region Executive. I'd also like to acknowledge the significant task ahead of us in finance, insurances and property for the incoming Region Executive.

This year has continued to be a busy and interesting year for our Region Joey Scouts and their dedicated Joey Scout leaders. We had 16 youth across the Region achieve their Joeys Scout Challenge Award, the peak award for Joey Scouts. For some groups, it was the first ever Joey Scout Challenge Award. This growth reflects continued development of youth programme and even greater engagement across our section. We anticipate continued growth in this area.
As a Region Wandarrah team we have been proud to deliver our Region Joey Scout Pirate Camp at Heathcote, Region Joey Scout Fun Day in the city and Region Campfire again this year.
The Region Joey Scout Camp was attended by 170 youth and adults, featuring patch-wearing and peglegged participants along with a couple of parrots! Camping on the back flat at Heathcote, the ship deck of the parade ground was left open for all sorts of pirate-themed fun. You can bet your Jolly Roger that by all accounts, the love of camping and adventure was ignited. Thank you to everyone who participated – all hands on deck made it a great weekend for all.
Our Joey Scout Region Camp Fire was held at Heathcote with over 80 youth and family participating and showcasing their wide range of talents with singing and acting.
We held our Joey Scout Fun Day based at Hyde Park, where 120 Joey Scouts visited the War Memorial and the Australia Museum on the day. All the Joeys Scouts had to complete a scavenger hunt searching for Baden Powell flag, soil from their home town RSL and dinosaur bones
Unit participation in Region and other Scouting adventures is shared and encouraged through our monthly leaders meeting. This year saw Joey Scout Units attend of participate in South Met Region Scout Camp, Jambowlree , Scouts In Action, National Birdwatch, Clean Up Australia Day, ANZAC and Remembrance Day, Boree, JOTA / JOTI.
Our goal is to get Joey Scouts out and about experiencing new adventures. A message of thanks also to the South met Activities team where four Joey Scouts have participated in Snow Play Camp, Bushwalking, Fishing program delivery is also appreciated.
2023 has seen the Cub Scouts out & about and enjoying a number of activities. These included Cub Scout Day Out, which was greatly supported with the attendance of approx. 180 Cub Scouts – the day was held at Tempe with the assistance of the Team from Orienteering NSW. Two successful Cub Scout Leadership Courses were run in May & November with full numbers of 42 for each. The Youth Helper course was run at both courses as well – a pleasing turn out!
26 Grey Wolf / Peak Awards were presented to well deserving Cub Scouts – Congratulations to you & your Cub Scout Leaders on assisting you to achieve these esteemed award for your age group.
Cuboree 2023“Explore The World” - was attended by a strong Contingent of 9 Cub Scout Units from South Met Region.
A big thank you to the Seeonee District Leaders and the many enthusiastic Cub Scout Leaders of South Met for their continued support attending the Region events and for the time and effort they put into the programs for their Cub Scout Units.
Despite the disruptions of the past couple of years, Scouting has proven to be a resilient organisation, forging ahead through numerous obstacles.
The past 12 months have seen the Scout Section experience a range of new opportunities and events, allowing the youth and Scout Units to ramp up their involvement and achieve significant milestones within Scouting. This reinvigorated drive has led to participation in numerous outdoor activities, such as boating and hiking, as well as major events, which have stabilised and strengthened our Units and provided our Scouts with new opportunities for personal development.
The South Metropolitan Scouts had an incredibly active year, attending several major events. They showcased their skills, teamwork, and Scout spirit at the Scouts NSW State Rally and formed unforgettable international friendships at the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea.
Scout Hike tested their endurance and skills, while the New Zealand Jamboree offered cultural exchange and adventure opportunities. The Boree Regatta emphasised teamwork and nautical skills, and School For Adventure pushed our Scouts to new heights in leadership, teamwork and in the outdoors. Some of our Scouts also embarked on incredible individual adventures, including a remarkable 65km hike along the Larapinta Trail. These activities fostered a sense of achievement and camaraderie and significantly contributed to our member's personal growth and resilience.
We look forward to another exciting year!
A very busy year for our Region’s Venturer Scout Section. Boree Regatta saw 80 Venturer Scouts and Senior Guides enjoy a sun-soaked weekend with thanks to Patch’s action packed programme.
An increasing attendance of Venturer Scouts at the adventurous activities organised by our Region Team is very encouraging. As was the great turnout at the Vertical based, Zero to Hero weekend at Coutts.
Venture 24 in Victoria and Dragon Skin were also well attended. So pleased to see activities being run by Units for other Units, like the Oyster Bay organised Transport themed activity.
As we do each year, Scouting is a proud and vigorous supporter of ANZAC Day. There have been many photos of Venturer Scouts throughout the Region, laying wreaths, carrying banners and assisting with Services. Anyone watching the Anzac March could not fail to see the high profile of Scouting in our city.
My thanks to all Leaders, our Rover Scouts for the excellent RoVenture, Chris Ward and his Team for the many Events they have run and also the Region Office Team, for making things happen and facilitating the paperwork and a million other details.
My sincere congratulations to our new Queen’s Scouts Awardees, and to their Leaders and fellow Unit members for their support.
Thank you also to Christopher Holcroft who always assists with the Leadership / Personal Development Course and to Andrew Hay (Patch) and Ken Foskey (Tall Pine).
Thank you to Tim Ryan for his time as the Region Rover Scout Council Chair for 2023 and Region Rover Scout Executive for the work and dedication they put into the year. It was a huge year for our Rover Scouts, and while there is not the space for everything been done and everyone are a just a few highlights.
Dragon Skin 2024 calls for a massive BRAVO to Tim Ryan as VOC Commander and 1st Caringbah Rover Scouts who won VOC3’s best activity award with their base “Indiana Jones & The Whispers of the Lost Relics”. 1st Caringbah Rover Scouts continue to show great leadership, creativity and growth and we are looking forward to what they produce for the rest of the year.
Alexander Morson, with assistance from a fabulous team of Rover Scouts, did a great job bringing us RoVenture Venturer Scouts by Rover Scouts. While the theme was a little sour, the product was as sweet as it could’ve been!
Gymea Rover Scouts were presented with the Outstanding Service Award at the BP Lodge Bannerette Service Awards. A further congratulations to both Coogee and 1st Dulwich Hill Rover Scouts for their respective nominations/awards. We would also like to highlight and recognise those who share their commitment with Scouting as leaders with Scout Groups, in all sections, over the Region. While there are too many to name, these Rovers are an incredible asset that we would be lost without.
2023/24 sees Rover Scouts attending and supporting events both over Australia and internationally. Our Rover Scout Units are progressing incredibly well with extremely motivated people, and several of our Rover Scouts are working towards their peak awards.
We are looking forward to further leadership and to continue creating opportunities for young people to develop as young adults.

Following the uncertainty of previous years with the disruptions caused by Covid, this 2023 Region Camp showed glimmers of returning to previous event expectations, with over 750 youth members, leaders, Venturer Scouts and Rover Scouts attending for this King’s Birthday long weekend.
With the theme ‘Elements’ - this gave a broad array for the imagination of youth and leaders to develop activities that were on point with the theme, and they certainly did not disappoint, keeping all participants entertained over the entire weekend.
Our opening was very special with the attendance of Jenny Ware MP, our Federal Member for Hughes, who presented Camp Coutts with a complete flag set and awards to a number of Scouts, Venturer Scouts and leaders.
Our activities team provided and delivered as usual a variety of exciting activities from abseiling through to crate stacking and the ever popular and challenging ninja line.
Camping was under pleasant skies with cold nights, which gave way to wonderful sunny days, a welcome relief from our usual long weekend wet and rainy camps.
With significant contributions from the various Units their youth members, leaders, Venturer Scouts and Rover Scouts; all adding their own distinctive touch to the camp, this made for an exciting visitors day on the Sunday with over 570 Joey Scouts, Cub Scouts and leaders attending and participating in the overall excitement of the camp.
A wonderful camp appreciated by everyone. BRAVOOO
After several years of disruptions due to COVID-19 lockdowns, social distancing, and a year of cancellation of the event due to heavy rainfall that drenched Bonna Point Reserve, we were thrilled to finally be able to host the 48th Endeavour Boree Regatta for our Scouts and Guides. Last year, many of our 255 youth members, along with some 50 leaders and 36 parent helpers experienced the event’ s camaraderie, community spirit, and inclusion for either the first time in their section or at the event.
The weekend was packed with engaging, challenging, and fun water and land activities, and the return of the popular disco. In particular, the determination and joy radiating from our youth members as they endeavored to construct the sturdiest raft, or the tallest flagpole were truly memorable. Their smiles and unwavering determination showcased their spirit of teamwork and adventure, making these activities cherished highlights of the event. The highly esteemed raft-building competition saw triumph in the hands of 2nd Enfield/1st Woollahra/Paddington Cub Scouts being awarded the Gunnamatta Junior Shield and 2nd Panania Scouts were awarded the Kurnell Shield for their impressive Campcraft skills. These are just a few examples of groups that showcased exceptional outdoor adventure and bushcraft skills. Despite an unplanned fire ban, our leaders quickly adapted, ensuring that all participants were well-fed and satisfied, even with a shift from barbequed meals to more salads.
It was wonderful to see our youth members putting forth their best efforts, eagerly participating in every activity and honing their leadership skills. The success of this event was made possible by our dedicated committee, our face-to-face leaders, and our Rover Scouts for unwavering support and proactive assistance throughout the event.
At the time of writing this report, we are busily working on the 49th Endeavour Boree Regatta and I look forward to seeing everyone there.
During the past 5 months the Wardens and the builders have put in a big effort to get the camps looking good and improving safety within our camps.
At J.H.Kaye Scout Training Centre, we have had kitchen upgrade, with in the assembly hall and Coolabah, Air Conditioning installing in the Activity Hut and the painting of the Activity Hut and female toilets. During the last school holidays, after some security concerns we have had a full security review, and with a donation from ACA Group we are upgrading the security across all activity centres.
At Camp Coutts, we have had a new road supplied by National Park and Wildlife Service, down to the entry to the camp. During the heavy rains we have had the Mathew’s Hut and the Warringal Kitchen flood and the road within the camp washed away. We will be installing a new colvent across the road. In a more positive note, we have had a new roof put on the Activity Hall and the floor repaired.
We would like to say a thank you to Jim and his Warden teams at Camp Coutts for all their efforts over the past few months with the clean up after the mud and water pouring through the buildings.
At Cronulla Activity Centre we have had a lot of use of the watercraft over the summer. Please don’t forget you can use this facility over the winter too.
If you would like to be become a warden and help in maintaining these facilities please contact Greg.
School For Adventure 2023 had 47 youth from both local Scout & Guide groups, run and supported by 25 Leaders, Rover Scouts & helpers. SFA is an 8-day camp help at Heathcote Scout Camp designed to give Scouts and Guides a taste of what Venturer Scouts is all about. It is a fully catered event with 6 meals a day, some even with multiple courses, all cooked by an incredible team of helpers.
Youth are placed into 1 of 8 patrols, to then spend the next week with, completing all their activities. Across 4 days of the event the youth get to participate in a range of adventurous activities including Waterskiing, Canoeing/ Kayaking, Abseiling, Lawn Bowls, Sailing, Mountain biking, Bushwalking & Rock Climbing.
Outside of the adventurous activities, we also have a big day out in the city, wide games day and a sports day where each patrol gets to compete to go into the SFA history books and take a spot on the trophy. Every night there is a range of activities to bring out the creative side in everyone including, square dancing, craft, Disco, Campfire and a nice chill movie night during the middle of the event to take a bit of a break.
At the end of the week all the youth go home with new friendships & memories that will last a lifetime along with a range of new skills with the hope that it encourages them to continue in their Scouting and Guiding journeys.
SFA would not be possible without the support from the local Scout Groups and Region, but most importantly our team of extremely dedicated leaders and Rover Scouts who give up their time and resources to come along and run what is one of the best events that Scouting has to offer.
Our team has an objective of delivering 70% Adventurous Activities (AA) for our youth and 30% AA Leader training to increase the skill levels of our adult members. This ratio is designed to deliver more activities within our Region and others.
We also manage equipment and resources to support activities including vertical equipment, watercraft, mountain bikes and the Cronulla Water Activities Centre.
We have just completed a project to manage our assets in Gear Log. This process has catalogued over 800 adventurous Activities items in South Mets assets list. These assets are available to all members of Scouting who have the required adventurous activity qualifications.
The Activities Team, over the period of 1st April 2023 to 1st April 2024 has:
Provided AA Events
• Directly ran 47 events over the past year with a total participation of 815 participants. These events grossed $31,160 for South Met.
• Additionally, the team supported other South Met Region activities such as Region Camp and two Joey Scout Fun days therefore providing AA experiences to a further 1,066 youth.
Provided AA Leader and youth training
• Provided 14 AA training events to 214 participants.
• Search and Rescue courses needed for a number of Guide level appointments and is a prerequisite for the Cert IV in Outdoor Leadership. So far, we are the only Region in NSW offering this on a regular basis.
• Wilderness first aid courses needed for a number of Guide appointments.
• Vertical rescue courses needed for Guide appointment in all vertical activities.
• A bushwalking program aimed at younger youth members.
• A Guiding Adventure program designed to build the number of appointed AA Guides in South Met Region. This program provided training to 25 Leaders and Rover Scouts.
• In 2024 we started an AA Guide indentureship program for a further 29 Leaders and Rover Scouts.
South Metropolitan Region
In July/August 2023, Scouts & Venturer Scouts and Leaders from the South Metropolitan Region travelled to South Korea for the 25th World Scout Jamboree. Our Scouts joined almost 1,000 Scouts from across Australia and spent a few days exploring the sites and culture of Seoul. The city was full of Scouts from all over the World who were also in attendance for the Jamboree, so it was an exciting time everywhere you turned, there were more Scouts! We joined 42,000 other Scouts from 158 Counties at the main campsite for the World Jamboree on the 2nd of August! The huge campsite was filled as far as the eye could see with Scouts and tents!
Unfortunately, South Korea's relentless summer heatwave and poor preparation for the event made for some very difficult camping conditions. However, our Scouts and leaders were resilient, and all worked together to help each other through these challenges and make the most of our time at the Jamboree site! Our Scouts met and traded badges and scarves with Scouts from all over the World, making new friends, learning about new cultures and becoming great global citizens. By mid-event, Typhoon Khanun started tracking towards the World Jamboree campsite. As a result, all Scouts were evacuated from the site. We continued our adventure from Hotel Rooms in Incheon, where the Scouts continued to explore Korea!
The Closing Ceremony was held at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, followed by a K-Pop Super Show for all the Scouts! Our Scouts returned to Australia over the coming days, relieved to be home but sad to be parting ways with new friends from all over Australia and the World!
Creek, New Zealand, 30 December 2023 - 7 January 2024
In December 2023 - January 2024, Scouts, Venturer Scouts and Leaders from the South Metropolitan Region travelled to New Zealand for the 23rd Aotearoa New Zealand Scout Jamboree. Scouts arrived and explored Auckland in their Pre-Tour before departing for the Jamboree Site in Mystery Creek, Hamilton, for 9 days of activities and excitement at camp! Day activities included vertical, biking and padding and a number of special events, including a New Year's Eve Party, Campfire Night and International Night.

2023/2024 has seen another year of Units working and growing together. Our District has yet again had rewarding combined outdoor activities and Region and State events.
Recruiting has again been a high priority for both youth and adults. Our District though small in numbers, continues to support and encourage our youth to achieve their full potential and grow through practical leadership. The result being 3 Venturer Scouts achieving their Queen’s Scout Award.
Canterbury Vale District Venturer Scouts continued to shine in 2024 they finished 5th out of 150 at Dragon Skin. 4 Venturer Scouts have progressed to Dulwich Hill Rover Scout Unit. Activities included Vivid visit, SES visit, Donation to Dulwich Hill Rover Scouts toy drive, preparing XMAS cards for Exodus Foundation Ashfield, Xmas markets at Polish Club Ashfield, St Nicholas Day, wreath laying at Sandakan memorial Burwood and on Remembrance Day at Croydon Park, Founders Day, Easter Egg hunt. Our major project being- preparing an art installation of 960 white wooden crosses for display on Anzac Day 2024 in Burwood Park.
We are all looking forward to taking part in combined activities with Bankstown District as I was appointed District Commissioner Bankstown in December 2023. Both Units in Bankstown District have large numbers and we are looking forward to sharing and learning about their spiritual and cultural heritage.
1st Padstow Heights, 1st Picnic Point, 2nd Panania, 1st Narwee, 1st Oatley Bay, 2nd Mortdale, Georges River Venturer & Rover Scouts
Georges River & East Hills District’s have ended the 2023/24 Scouting year with 352 youth members ranging from Joey Scouts up to Rover Scouts. The District had great success attending many District, Region, State, National and even International events over the past 12 months, with members of the District attending events including School for Adventure, Venture24, the 23rd Aotearoa/New Zealand Jamboree, Cuboree, and many more of the staple events held in South Metropolitan Region and NSW. 2023 saw a return in the District Swimming Carnival with 2nd Mortdale taking out top spot.
1st Oatley Bay yet again saw many Scouts work hard and receive their boat licence through the program they run. 1st Padstow Heights had a new breath of life with 2 Leaders joining the ranks. 1st Picnic Point sent 14 Scouts and Venturer Scouts to the NZ Jamboree in January as well as for the first time in their Scouting history had a peak award in 4 sections. 2nd Panania had a snow camp with their friends over at 3rd Rose Bay (Judean) and they had a blast. 2nd Mortdale had a great year of gaining new leaders and their kids having a ball in all areas of Scouting. All 4 Venturer Units attended RoVenture Pickled in February with Georges River coming out on top for having the most attendees.
In Rover Scout land, Picnic Point and Narwee have had a steady year with building a great program to attract interest from new Rover Scouts. Georges River went on a 104km hike along the Great Ocean Road and from all reports, it was fantastic.
I already know every group in GR/EH has at least 1 member attending the 26th Australian Jamboree in Maryborough in the summer of 2025. I cannot wait to see what is in store for Georges River & East Hills in 2024.
To finish off I would like to thank all our Leaders, they put so much time into building a program for our youth and without them there would be no youth members, which makes us obsolete.
THANK YOU LEADERS!
Fairfax/Kingsford Smith District - Ben Politzer 1st Alexandria, 1st Clovelly, 1st Little Bay, 1st Woollahra/Paddington, 3rd/4th Kensington, 3rd Rose Bay (Judean), Coogee Rover Scouts, Kingsford Venturer Scouts, Kingsford Smith & Fairfax Rover Scouts.
While all Groups continue to provide youth members with a full and diverse range of Scouting activities, 2023 saw a variety of challenges for the Districts. The introduction of ScoutHub has placed a great strain on resources but we are working through it now.
District numbers, primarily in the “Adult Helper” category, have decreased. Whilst parents/supporters are willing to be called upon to help leaders run weekly meetings etc. they were not willing to undertake the required training.
Very few new adults are willing to become leaders due to the training requirements placing additional burden on those that are currently registered. My focus was concentrated on the re-establishment of another Rover Scout Unit in the East. The end of 2023 saw the establishment of the Fairfax Rover Scout Unit. However, at the time of writing this report we have not been able to register new members, have them attend activities etc.
As a result of the Cub Scout section Youth Forum held at the end of 2022 the District decided to run one activity during the year instead of two as it decided we would not hold a District Camp so the Cub Scouts could give their preference to the Cuboree. A Bushwalk from Epping Station to Eastwood Station via the Lane Cove River was held in November with over 60 people attending the 10km walk.
The District Seeonee held another Youth Forum at the end of the year with representatives from nearly all Cub Scout Units in attendance. The members provided our Leaders with a list of some activities that could be run in 2024.
We saw several of our youth members attend the New Zealand Jamboree and the World Jamboree in Scout Korea. The District overall had a very successful year with all Groups participating in the usual community-based events such as ANZAC Day, Clean Up Australia and Remembrance Day.
The Districts also saw 3 Queen’s Scout Awards being presented and numerous Grey Wolf and Joey Scout Challenge Awards being achieved over the year.

The District has had a great year filled with growth, adventure, and community engagement. The District has seen a year of achievements and memorable experiences for both youth members and leaders alike.
The majority of our groups have experienced growth in membership. This increase is no doubt a reflection of the interesting and varied programs offered, as well as the dedication of our leaders. A highlight of the year was our participation in the World Scout Jamboree in Korea. Other highlights of the year included:
• Twenty-six youth members and seven adult leaders, from across the District, enjoyed an action packed and fun filled ski trip to Smiggin Holes. The trip helped to build resilience and camaraderie among the local groups who attended.
• Throughout the year, all section and family camps were organised by our local groups. These camps provided a platform for Scouts of all ages, along with their families, to connect and share in the fun of Scouting. Some of the activities included: abseiling, hiking, 4-wheel driving and canoeing. These family camps also offer parents a chance to experience Scouting first hand which has led to some of them signing up to become parent helpers and leaders.
• A caving camp at Bungonia where Scouts had the chance to explore underground caves while developing teamwork and problem-solving skills in a challenging environment.
• A four-day Adventurous Journey canoe hike gave Scouts the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of our natural waterways. This expedition was enjoyed by all who attended and shows the flexibility of the award system in allowing Scouts to achieve their peak award.
• Scout Hike and Dragon Skin events were among other highlights for our Scouts and Venturer Scouts. These competitions challenged their endurance, navigation, and Scouting skills in a competitive environment. Once again Scouts from our district placed in the top 12, and top 24, winning gold and silver medals.
• Our groups proudly participated in Anzac Day Dawn services across several cenotaphs, paying tribute to those who served and sacrificed their lives in past wars and present-day conflicts. Two of our Scouts were honored to be asked to march alongside the last remaining WW2 digger in the main ANZAC Day parade in Sydney. District.
The Iron Cove District has had an outstanding year, marked by growth, achievement, and a wealth of exciting activities. We look forward to the year ahead and remain committed to providing a diverse and dynamic Scouting experience for all our members. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the leaders, volunteers, parents, and community members who have supported our efforts. Together, we continue to inspire and develop the young people of our community through the values and adventures of Scouting.
1st Alcheringa, 1st Caringbah, 2nd Caringbah, 1st Grays Point, 2nd Gymea (St Catherines), 1st Lilli Pilli, The Gymea Rover Scouts, 1st Oyster Bay and 2nd Sutherland (ARMCO)
Port Hacking District has had another great year with exciting and challenging programs for the youth members. The quality of the Program delivery in the District is evidenced not only by smiles on faces but also by the awarding of 4 Queen’s Scout Awards, 7 Australian Scout Awards, 7 Grey Wolf Awards and 1 Joey Scout Challenge Award.
We celebrated the running of the first Boree Regatta in 3 years with wonderful October weather and lots of fun and the land and water events at Bonna Point. We kicked off this year with two great events in March; a Water Activities Founders Day for the Cub Scouts at 1st Grays Pt and the Port Hacking Flag Camp for the Scouts.
Our youth members were very active this year with adventurous activities and Peak Award expeditions. One of the most exciting expeditions was 2nd Sutherland Venturer Scout’s Snowy Mountains hike where they took in the sunrise from the top of Australia!
Some other program highlights in the Groups were:
• 1st Alcheringa’s Archery night in the hall with the State Archey Team.
• 2nd Gymea’s Cub Scout Camp to Mt Victoria and the Zig-Zag Railway in September.
• 1st Oyster Bay, a project Patrol with members from all sections participated in a Lego Robotics League at Wollongong University.
• 2nd Caringbah Scouts camped on Cockatoo Island
• 1st Lilli Pilli Cub Scouts had a Grey Wolf canoe hike to Cabbage Tree Creek
• Gymea Rover Scouts ran their first Halloween party in 4 years.
• Gymea and 1st Caringbah Rover Scouts winning combined to win a moot together.
• Venturer Scouts from all our units attended DragonSkin.
The District has continued our long-standing engagement with our community, including many groups participating in Clean Up Australia Day, City to Surf and Relay for Life and ANZAC day. 2nd Sutherland’ s Christmas Tree Sale and 1st Oyster Bay’s Fertiliser drive were also great examples of fund raising and raising our profile in the community.
Finally, we recognise 50 fantastic years of Service for Kay Rae, Cub Scout Leader and Leader in Charge at 2nd Gymea. Kay and her husband Rod, who has also given nearly 39 years service to Scouting, are retiring and we thank them both for their service the amazing contribution they have made to 2nd Gymea and Scouting in general.

1st Engadine Rover Scouts attended Dawn Service at the NSW Bush Walkers Association Anzac Dawn Service at Splendour Rock, assisted at Dragon Skin, had campfires, organised a few booting weekends.
The 1st Heathcote Scout Group has four sections and had an eventful year with a variety of activities and achievements across all levels. Our sections went bushwalking, attended NSW Cuboree, Region Camp, Boree Regatta, Region Joey Pirate Camp, Movie nights, RoVenture, rock climbing, abseiling, canyoning and much more. The group attended Dawn Service, held a Christmas Family event and Family Camp at Seven Mile Beach.
1st Loftus Scout Group has two sections and had a great year. The sections attended NSW Cuboree, District Pirate Camp, Region Camp, Cub Day Out and held numerous movie nights, campfires, cooking nights and day hikes. They had a fun day out at the Tramway museum open day with a successful BBQ Fundraiser as well. The Group attended Dawn Service and sang Christmas Carols at St Vincent Nursing Home. This year saw two Scouts and leaders attend the New Zealand Jamboree.
3rd Engadine (Don Bosco) Scout Group has a Cub Scout and Scout section. They attended many activities including District Camp, Region Camp, Boree Regatta to name a few. More regular activities included movie nights, hikes, canoeing, fishing, laser tag and Flip Out. There has been an increase in numbers to both sections year on year, facilitated by a supportive Group Committee who ran a disco for the local school. Group family camp was held at Gerroa and everyone had a great time.
Another successful year for the district with strong growth within the sections. It has been a change to not have the interruptions of previous years with fires, floods and Covid to deal with and the groups are bouncing back as the numbers show.
Our youth, adult members and leaders have participated in the many State & Region events this year as well as the Cuboree. These have been very successful and had healthy numbers of youth participation. We have seen strong turnout at these events with much discussion after the event as to the values of working in teams and in larger groups. The skills that have been achieved and demonstrated throughout the year show what can be achieved. Scout hike is a good example, the youth members do the planning and execution of the event. We have seen a larger uptake on the Cub leadership courses further advancing these young minds.
With the changes in the Region team, we have noticed and welcomed the diligence of the team to keep us informed and offer support. Along with this we have seen a stronger push to get the leaders trained and better equipped to deal with the youth in their charge.
The sections have managed exceptionally well with the new programming, and we have seen many youth gaining the top award in their sections.
The district does not run itself and only functions with the strong leaders within it. Thank you to all the leaders, adult support and our youth members. Thanks also to the Region team for their support and leadership.
