Annual Report 2019

Fund raising is continuing for phase II of the hall refurbishment (the toilets), please look at the hall notice board for details. We had donations from several individual sources this year including Life scan which allowed us to buy the new tables (even if the trolley doesn’t fit through the store room door ….. so much for ‘being prepared’!)

One of the reasons that we have young people coming to the groups every week and a long waiting list is due to the inspirational programme of events the leaders create from cakes to camps, maps to meals, badge work to bonfires, there is something new to inspire and interest. The leaders give their time free week on week to develop new and exciting challenges…. Thank you.

Chairman’s Welcome

When we are away at camp Anne and Geoff again provided the home support which again allows the leader to focus on camp activities, thank you Anne and Geoff.

However, this summer at Kingmills will see one of the leaders ‘hang up his woggle’. John Horne from the Beaver colony will retire from being a Beaver leader this summer. John has been with the troop for 15 years and we will be sad to see him go. I personally remember the gentle reassuring welcome John gave when our kids joined Beavers which helped calm considerable anxiety (………and our kids were also reassured!) I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say a massive B.R.A.V.O. from the whole troop and wish John well. In addition to the work of the leaders, this year we had a record number of adult helpers especially at the midsummer madness district event which was a great success. Kingmills were represented by the biggest turn out of any troop…. well done and a massive thank you to all who volunteered. The large number of adult helpers was a great boost to the leaders and allowed them to concentrate more attention on the young people and provide an exciting and challenging programme of events.

It has been another busy and successful year. I have the pleasure of saying thank you to a lot of people. I’d like to start this year with a thank you to all the young people for taking part with such enthusiasm, for their weekly commitment to the group and for giving up some of their precious screen time each week! Without them there is no Scouting.

A big thank you needs to go to the Scout group committee, without who race night, bingo, coffee morning, AGM and of course Scout post (esp Nicola) would have all been much more difficult. The attendance at the committee meetings is impressive and I believe this year all the committee are staying on (which means it can’t be that bad!!). However, we are keen to welcome a couple more adults, especially representing the Beavers and Cubs so if you are interested then please contact me. Even if committee work not for you, we need people with other skills e.g. joinery, painting, fund raising and any artistic flourishes for the notice board would be welcomed!!

Dear Parents, Guardians and young people at Kingmills Scouts

Since the last AGM you will not have failed to notice the new kitchen area, this was completed (on time) by Alasdair MacRaild but would not have been possible without the help of many, not least Bruce, our in-house architect and general fixer!

I’m sure I have missed many other people who have worked so hard to make Kingmills Scouts excellent this year and to you all one final ‘thank you. look forward to the next year full of activities, fund raising and new toilets!

I

The final and biggest thank you goes to Graham Eden as Group Scout Leader. Graham seems to have endless energy and enthusiasm which is infectious. In addition to all that he does for Kingmills Scout group, Graham has been working hard to support the opening of a new Beaver colony at the Cathedral to increase the opportunities for more young people in Inverness. We wish the Cathedral group all the best group and hope to see Cubs and Scouts there in the fullness of time.

For all the successes of the year, it has not been without its challenges, particularly for the Beaver Colony. We lost Nathan and Abby prior to Christmas due to other time constraints, which has at times led to pinch points for the Beaver Colony. But from these challenges we will work to recruit additional adult volunteers to help further the Beaver programme. I would like to pay particular thanks to Rachel for her dogged determination in delivering a fantastic, varied and challenging programme for the Beavers, despite these setbacks.

Group Scout Leader

This structured approach to Scouting at Kingsmills has once again become a hallmark of what we offer 90 youngsters every week at our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, supported by a strong Executive Committee. So enough of the kitchen and let’s get to our year of Scouting. The summer once again kicked off with the Scouts on their annual Summer Camp, this time to Bonaly near Edinburgh. A full-on week of activities, hikes and visits to the Falkirk Wheel, Kelpies and Edinburgh. In my 25 years of summer camps, I don’t think that I can recollect such fantastic weather at a weeklong camp in Scotland.

Activity highlights of the year across the sections must include the Cubs having a joint hike and sleepover with Crown Cubs, the Scouts at Tomintoul and completing their Master at Arms badge over the winter months and the Beavers once again having their puppet show.

I think back to last June when we were all together for our AGM and family fun afternoon talking about a kitchen. Yes, the mythical kitchen which had been years in the works, moved round the building, changed in size several times, with detailed discussions on door furniture, worktops and of course our committee discussion on the colour of the splashback. You have got to wonder why I am opening my review of the year talking about a kitchen? Ironically, the kitchen represents the best in our leadership and governance at Kingsmills. A structured project, with strong leadership, drawing in skilled people and delivered in a professional manner. Here we are 12 months on with a fantastic resource, professionally planned and delivered, to benefit the Group for many years to come.

The year has seen 3 large Group events take place. We once again commandeered Rollerbowl and had almost 100 people enjoy this year’s Jambowlree. This is a firm favourite on the Group calendar.

Where has the last 12 months gone….. And what a 12 months it’s been at Kingsmills.

Over the next 12 months, we will be looking at how we can expand the nights away opportunities across the group to offer more adventure and activities to even more youngsters in the Group. In February, we were delighted to open a new Beaver Colony at Inverness Cathedral. This is a joint project between Kingsmills and the Cathedral. The Cathedral Beavers will have their own identity and name but be a part of our family at Kingsmills, where we will provide management, governance and support. We wish Sarah, Emmanuel and the Beavers every best wish and our ongoing support, with an aim to see Cubs and Scouts at the Cathedral in the future.

With the lack of a District Founder’s Day Service we were invited to join the Cathedral for their Sunday Service, which they kindly allowed us to tweak to be a Founder’s Day Service. The service was very well attended by Kingsmills and Crown, with so many youngsters taking part in various aspects of the service. My thanks to Heather for her efforts in putting this together at short notice.

The highlight of the year has to be the Midsummer Madness Camp at the Black Isle Showground.

Our first time taking the group to camp since 2008. We have not been the best at asking for help in the past as a Group, but to provide the opportunity for the youngsters we needed volunteers to support us. Overwhelmed and thankful are the two words which I will forever associate with MM19. Overwhelmed by the number of parents and level of support offered by parents and thankful for your commitment to support us. Everything from helping put up tents, running activities, loading the van and of course the catering. There are so many to say thank you to I can’t possibly name everyone, but I would like to thank the four in the kitchen particularly: Christine, Lisa, Maggs and Craig. Suffice to say I know my place and it isn’t in the kitchen!

Here’s to the next 12 months.

All these developments at the Scout Hall and activities only happen due to our wonderful team of adult volunteers and it is important that we recognise that we do not have leaders and a committee, we have 1 team of adult volunteers at Kingsmills. Every role, every piece of support and every small job contributes to the smooth running of the Group. My thanks to each and everyone of you. Looking ahead to next year and we can look forward with optimism. We have taken on board the feedback from parents on events and fundraising and we are adapting the fundraising programme to promote “social fundraising”, by having events for all the family. We will be working to get dates in the diary much earlier so that you can plan. We are improving the way we communicate with parents so you will have information in a timely manner and more importantly so that you don’t feel that there are any barriers to asking a question - including how to volunteer. I am certainly making a concerted effort to be at all 4 sections as often as I can, with an aim to chat with parents as well as the youngsters. As we look forward, I would ask you to think about one thing. What could you offer to help make your child’s experience at Kingsmills even better than it is? We have so many ways that you can be involved and can suit your time constraints, as we all are extremely busy people with lives. It is not just about being a leader. If you are strong on governance - join our Executive Committee, if you have a flair for sharing information - take on the new Group noticeboard, if you are a dab hand at social media - be our Group social media champion shouting about what we do online, if you are happy to help out occasionally - why not join or lead our new Scout Active Support Unit. All of these are great ways that you can support us at Kingsmills in a way that can suit your existing life.
