Dear Girl Scouts, Volunteers and Families, We are thrilled to welcome you to the 2024 Girl Scout Cookie Program! This is a special time of the year when we come together to embark on a magical journey filled with fun, learning, and community spirit. As a Girl Scout, you are not only developing essential life skills, but you are also contributing to our shared mission of making the world a better place. By participating in the Cookie Program, you are helping empower girls to become future leaders, take on challenges, and make a positive impact in their communities. Here are a few key details for this year’s Cookie Program: 1. Digital Cookie: We are excited to introduce the option of selling cookies online through the new Digital Cookie platform. Read on for more information on how to set up your Digital Cookie account. 2. Safety First: The safety of our Girl Scouts, volunteers and supporters is our top priority. We will provide guidelines and resources to ensure a safe and successful sale. 3. Resources: You’ll have access to a variety of resources, including guides, marketing materials, and mentors to help you succeed in your cookie sale. 4. Goals: Set your cookie sale goals and share them with your troop leaders. Remember, each box of cookies sold brings us one step closer to our shared goals. 5. Community Impact: Remind your customers that every cookie purchase supports girls in your community and helps fund life-changing programs.

Once again cookie season is upon us, the season where our Girl Scouts

learn, practice and perfect the five key skills of the cookie program. Every year I am honored to be involved in all of this because I 100% unequivocally feel how deeply important it is to help our Girl Scouts build their confidence, self-esteem, innovation, and creativity. The most amazing thing about this program is the opportunity to help our Girl Scouts be true to themselves. To understand what makes a happy and successful life. How to dream big. To communicate, interact and treat others. I truly want every Girl Scout to realize just how awesome they are. That they can make anything happen if they dream big and work hard. As the ones who guide them and mentor them it is our responsibility to show them the world has limitless opportunities and it’s all there if they dare to reach for it. I have had the pleasure of witnessing acts of generosity and kindness on a monumental scale from our Girl Scouts, but I’ve also witnessed acts of grace and courage on an individual basis. Every year the Girl Scouts and volunteers of GSSGC show me that all we do is for the greater good of the Girl Scout. That everyone matters. When we teach our Girl Scouts to reach for opportunities, and they have a supportive network cheering them on, they will do incredible things. This year’s cookie entrepreneurial theme is “Own your Magic.” When they are free to be themselves, and

6. Have Fun: Most importantly, have fun and make lasting memories with your fellow Girl Scouts. This is your chance to shine and make a difference! We’re excited about the opportunities that lie ahead during this cookie program and we are here to support you every step of the way. If you have any questions or need assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out to your troop leader or our dedicated entrepreneurial team of volunteers and staff. Thank you for being a part of this wonderful tradition. Let’s make the 2024 Girl Scout Cookie Program a fantastic success!

I am thankful that each of you have decided to take this journey with us, to witness the great, amazing, and wonderful things that a cookie can do; it can help our Girl Scouts change the world, it can help all of us create the magic of a wonderful community and it can help our Girl Scouts find a bit of their own magic!

Diversity Equity Inclusion

We are excited to share an important update regarding Girl Scouts’ commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial justice (DEIRJ).

At the 56th National Council Session, which convened this past summer, National Delegates representing councils from across the country voted to pass the DEIRJ language proposal that added the word “anti-racism” to the Diversity and Pluralism section of the Preamble of the Girl Scouts Constitution. This confirms our guiding principle to be an inclusive, anti-racist organization where all members and their families feel welcomed, respected, and empowered. While the original proposal was to insert “and anti-racism” into two places in the Girl Scouts Constitution, delegates felt it was important to add additional language through a parliamentary amendment during the session. As amended, it now reads: Girl Scouts advance diversity, pluralism, and antiracism and actively identify and oppose racism by removing systemic barriers to participation in our Movement and in the communities in which we live. This milestone is a direct result of your dedication to our Movement and our common belief that Girl Scouts should be accessible to all. Thank you for your continued support, your passion for Girl Scouting, and your commitment to this important work to ensure a strong and enduring future for Girl Scouts. We look forward to championing this work—together.

The theme for the 2024 Cookie Season is “Own Your Magic.” I love this signature theme because that’s exactly what the cookie sale allows you to do. It gives Girl Scouts a magic carpet to travel widely and say “Open Sesame” to blow open doors to fantastic incentives like technology, programs, and camp. It is also a widely venerated program that generation after generation of Girl Scouts have been proud to join. It is how most of the world knows us and why we are one of the most recognized international brands. Those of us who are and were Girl Scouts know that it is so much more than a sale. It is a powerful program where business skills are nurtured and developed. This is where we learn to run our own businesses and really connect with our communities and witness the changes that happen year after year. It is no surprise to learn that most of our female business leadership throughout the country were Girl Scouts. The five skills of the Girl Scout Cookie Program equip girls with the essentials they need during the sale and help lead to their future successes in life. We also have fun while working very hard to achieve our goals. It’s where we learn to be brave and safe, talk to strangers, set goals, work as a team, and take pride in our Girl Scout background. As a Girl Scout growing up, the cookie sale taught me to meet new people and be very curious about why they did or did not want to buy my cookies. I was deeply interested in engaging people and sharing the excitement and joy I was experiencing through Girl Scouting. Good luck and enjoy every moment of this sale! It will be at times exhausting, but remember the rewards go far beyond the sale and incentives. You are on a journey that will play forward and result in valuable rewards throughout your life. Scooter Barb and I will see as many of you as possible at your booths. Yours in Girl Scouting,

Cynthia H. Breunig President and CEO

2024

Cookie Price Change GSSGC is committed to making thoughtful decisions regarding changes to the Cookie Program. After extensive collaboration with Volunteers, Community Partners, Girls, and Council leadership, we have decided to implement a price increase for the 2024 Cookie Program. The retail price of cookies for 2024 will be increased by $1 per package. Gluten-Free Caramel Chocolate Chip cookies will be $7 per package; all other flavors will be priced at $6 per package. It’s important to note that our sister councils across the West Coast have also implemented price increases on their traditional flavors, with many of them doing so last year. This decision has been influenced by the fact that the cost of everything, including expenses related to the baker, rewards, shipping, travel, utilities, supplies, and more, has risen. These increased costs have impacted not only the Council but also Troops and Regions. With this price increase, we aim to ensure that Council can maintain the girl rewards that you have come to expect and deserve. Furthermore, it will result in a boost in proceeds for both troops and regions, enabling you to continue providing the high-quality programming that our Girl Scouts deserve. A revised “How the Cookie Crumbles” is included for you to review and see how the extra funds generated from this price increase will be implemented.

Booth sale rules say you must be in at least a Girl Scout t-shirt and vest/sash/smock to be running a legal cookie booth, but a full uniform represents you, and ensures the public sees proud young women. Girl Scouts at each level wear one required element (tunic, sash, or vest) to display official pins and awards. Girls can mix and match pieces from the official Girl Scout collection to complete the full uniform. When you wear your uniform with pride, the world notices. So we made a patch for our staff and teams to have with them at all times to honor you with when they find you wearing your full uniform at your cookie booth. Plus five winners, one troop per region, will win $1,000 in I Cares on the last day of the cookie program!

We strive to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. When girls go to camp, either on their own or with an adult partner, they explore leadership in a new way. At camp girls build life skills, responsibility and healthy habits while developing a deep appreciation for nature. Girl Scout camp provides a caring environment led by trained adults who help girls explore, grow and have fun.

Regional Leaders of the Year A GSSGC recognition, this award recognizes one leader per region who displays a positive attitude, supports Girl Scouting through well-rounded programming, is current in all training requirements and has given outstanding service to girls over the period of 5 consecutive years.

Emily Dixon – C E N T R A L I am AMAZED at all of the opportunities Emily has given the girls in her Girl Scout troop. Not only did she keep her troop together and active during the pandemic, they came out stronger and more active than ever. During the past year they have done float decorating, camping, swimming at Lake Gregory, a Tie Dye swim party, Camp Surf, and Disneyland. This troop has also worked together on beautiful wood libraries, learning new skills and how to work with new tools, in order to earn their Silver Award. But what impresses me the most is how, every time someone asks what Emily’s troop is doing or going to do, her answer is always the same, “It depends on what THEY decide.” THAT is girl-led and THAT is SO important. I’ve watched her mentor the girls and give her whole heart to this troop. She has taught them to be leaders in their communities and has encouraged them to be their very best! Emily is an amazing leader! Our troop is so lucky to have her. She is so deserving of this acknowledgment!

Preeyavata “Dow” Wanapun – S O U T H W E S T Dow has gone above and beyond as a leader by always being available for her troop, girls and parents; supporting the girls to build confidence and thrive as individuals as well as guiding them when needed. Dow makes herself available to her troop and parents by constantly communicating activities and encouraging involvement in various activities and learning opportunities. She does all this while working a full-time job that is very demanding. She supports not only the girls in her troop, but includes girls from sister troops. Dow has been creative in her scheduling to allow all the girls to participate in activities and has worked with parents to ensure the majority, or all of the girls, can participate. Dow is patient with parents and walks them through the various tasks when needed. As a Girl Scout myself, with my memories from that time (many years ago), Dow exceeds my expectations and, if not for her, I know my daughter would not have the opportunities to participate in the multitude of activities that Dow has arranged and created for her troop. She has a leading role in how amazing my daughter has grown over the past few years. She has created lifelong memories my daughter will have forever.

30 

Kimberly Rizzo – C E N T R A L W E S T Kimberly always gives her full time and attention to her Girl Scout troop and region. She is constantly planning and executing events, as well as hosting meetings and allowing her level leaders room to help the girls earn all of their achievements. She has a large troop and encourages everyone to participate and other leaders to plan their own events, but at the end of the day she takes responsibility and makes sure everyone is successful and the girls have a great time. She also goes out of her way to help other troops with major and minor issues and questions. Kimberly has been a troop leader of a super troop for longer than the 6 years I have been a leader. She wants girls to feel welcomed and empowered. When you join Kimberly’s troop you become part of a family. Kimberly isn’t just any leader, she is the most caring and inclusive leader I have ever worked with. I have seen Kimberly welcome several new families to the troop since we have joined and it’s the same each time. She welcomes them with open arms and includes them completely from day one. Kimberly treats the girls equally, she talks with them to make decisions, not at them.

Blaize Ison – H I G H D E S E R T Ever since I’ve known Blaize, she’s always open to opportunities to provide interesting and unique experiences to her troop members. She always thinks outside the box when it comes to program and how it applies to the four program pillars of Girl Scouting. Blaize ensures that they set their goals just a bit higher than previously for the entrepreneurial program; she offers unique outdoor adventures, works with them to develop their sewing skills, budgeting, time management and so much more. All I know is that she is always thinking about us and providing different things for us to do to keep active. I don’t have time to go to a lot of activities because of my high school stuff-I am captain of the dance team and in FFA. I like how she is always looking for different things and includes me too. Her own child is a Brownie and she makes sure that all of us are included. From another troop member: I was the only 9th grader, the next oldest was in the 6th grade. I was finding it hard to stay involved with all of the littles. I felt that everything we were doing was for 2nd and 3rd graders. She knew I was losing interest and we had a talk about different things that would keep me interested. She helped plan some activities around me, making me feel included.

Council Leader of the Year

This award is the highest Council adult recognition presented to one leader who has given outstanding service to girls over the period of 5 consecutive years.

Amber Szydlo – S O U T H W E S T

Amber is a shining example of the Girl Scout Promise and Law for her girls. Not only is she an amazing leader to the girls in her troops, but to girls and adults throughout the Southwest Region in her role as Southwest Regional Chair, Products Cupboard Manager and Trainer. Amber is always willing to step up and help the girls and leaders succeed in their goals. Amber has provided many opportunities for her troops to try new and different things, ensuring a well-rounded and enriching experience. To name a few, her girls have participated in camping, Roar and Snore, GenCyber, Disney’s educational program, decorating Rose Parade Floats, surf camp, white water rafting and so much more! Amber and her girls are very active in the community and participate in volunteer opportunities such as Christmas tree decorations and donations, game day with senior citizens and numerous Girl Scout events. Amber is an incredible leader who we all aspire to be. She is the true embodiment of everything that we want to see in our leaders and that we would want our girls to take after. Amber leads two very active troops with girls of varying levels. She offers her girls exceptional leadership opportunities through exemplary implementation of the girl-led model. She has provided the girls with a well-rounded Girl Scout experiene. Amber leads her girls to extend that sisterhood beyond the troop level and has coordinated multi-troop weekend campouts and events. She lets the girls lead in activities that they can teach the younger girls in Journey-in-a-Day events. Amber takes the girl-led model seriously and works hard to ensure the girls are building their leadership skills and are comfortable taking on leadership roles. Over the years, Amber has guided the girls through the process of planning, organizing, executing, and completing money earning activities (MEAs), which the girls used to save up money for extended troop travels to San Francisco and all over Southern California. She helps the girls work to reach their goals for taking trips to places like surf camp and white water rafting. They work hard to promote and make the MEA original and fun for all attendees and volunteers. These activities provided the girls with educational, adventurous, and fun Girl Scout experiences. She also opens up these experiences to girls outside her troop when space allows, offering her planning skills to help others experience things they may not have the chance to otherwise. Amber taught me a new perspective about why we do service projects. Though it is a learning experience doing service for others, we are learning and re-learning compassion. She also taught me that these are some of the best times to be goofy with your friends because it makes the experience even more fulfilling

Jessica Bailey

“I started going camping when I was six years old. It was nerve-racking at first, but then I started having fun and the week went by so fast. I went every year until I was old enough to participate in LEAP (a leadership program for Cadettes) and then CIT (Counselor-InTraining) program. I learned leadership skills, how to care for those younger than me, how to be spontaneous, and much more. Camp has always been a big part of my life and I can never forget the experiences I had, the friends I’ve made, and the people I grew to love and cherish.”

CAMP

SKYLAND RANCH Skyland Ranch provides outdoor experiences to develop girls’ leadership potential by allowing them to discover their values and the world around them; connect with others in a multicultural environment; and take action to make a difference in their world. We continue to upgrade the facilities and resources at this vast 191-acre camp in our pursuit to make it selfsustainable. Skyland Ranch is first and foremost a Girl Scout Camp, a place where programming features a variety of fun and challenging activities that empower girls as they develop skills and behaviors essential to effective leadership. The camp is now also an effective community resource for the schools in our region who engage in programming at the facility during the school year. This past school year we succeeded in serving over 3,500 students at Skyland Ranch! The community also came to our aid as members from the California Conservation Corps put in a massive amount of hard work in cutting the trees, clearing branches, and beautifying the area to continue making Skyland Ranch a safe place. So many great things for camp are happening and we are not done yet! We were successful in raising the funds needed for the initial investment to begin preparing Camp Azalea Trails to reopen and plan to schedule an open house in the spring. More details will follow at a later date. While Azalea Trails is being prepped, the beautiful Camp Wi-Wo-Ca is available for our troops to experience the outdoors. Many individuals, corporations, and foundations have chosen to contribute to our camps over the years and we invite you to join them in preserving our camps for future generations. BROUGHT TO YOU BY YOUR COUNCIL MEMBERSHIP DEPARTMENT

WHAT YOU NEED • sunny day • cardboard pizza box • plastic wrap • scissors • aluminum foil • clear tape • black construction paper • old newspapers • wooden spoon • plate smaller than your pizza box • tortilla chips • shredded cheese • oven mitts or a towel

NACHO Average Experiment Did you know you can make tasty nachos without an oven or microwave? It’s true! Follow these instructions to make a solar oven and cook up some melty goodness.

1 Use scissors to cut along three sides of the pizza box’s lid to create a flap.

5 Take your solar pizza oven to a sunny spot. Place a plate of tortilla chips and shredded cheese inside the box.

2 Cover the inside of that flap with aluminum foil.

6 Use a wooden spoon to prop open the foil-covered flap at an angle so it faces direct sunlight.

3 Fold the flap back and open the lid. From the inside of the lid, tape a piece of plastic wrap over the space where the flap was so it looks like a window. 4 Tape black construction paper along the bottom of the box. Roll sheets of newspaper to create a border around the cooking area.

7 Wait for the cheese to melt— this may take a while if it’s not very hot outside. Use oven mitts or a towel to lift your plate out of the cooker. Enjoy!
