About “PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE” “Planes: Fire & Rescue” is a new comedy-adventure about second chances, featuring a dynamic crew of elite firefighting aircraft devoted to protecting historic Piston Peak National Park from raging wildfire. When world famous air racer Dusty (voice of Dane Cook) learns that his engine is damaged and he may never race again, he must shift gears and is launched into the world of aerial firefighting. Dusty joins forces with veteran fire-and-rescue helicopter Blade Ranger (voice of Ed Harris) and his courageous team, including spirited air tanker Dipper (voice of Julie Bowen), heavy-lift helicopter Windlifter (voice of Wes Studi), ex-military transport Cabbie (voice of Captain Dale Dye) and a lively bunch of brave all-terrain vehicles known as The Smokejumpers. Together, the fearless team battles a massive wildfire and Dusty learns what it takes to become a true hero. www.disney.ie/planes

Green Isle Hotel, Dublin

At this stage you know the logistics and costs of the 2014 Scouters

Conference, however you might be wondering how attending this event will assist in the Appointment/ Position that you hold and more importantly how will we tailor it to your needs. It is our intention to assist you in your role of supporting and mentoring Scout Group Teams in order to ensure that the Youth Members of Scouting Ireland experience a type of Scouting that they expected when they joined, and that the Association would like them to experience. Putting it simply: Discover - The world of Scouting Connect - Adults to the needs of Young People Take Action - Through Youth Programme Opportunities

How will this happen? In August and September of this year the Chief Scout, and the two Chief Commissioners (along with members of their teams) will facilitate a needs analysis forum in each of the six Scout Provinces for the Provincial Management/ Support Teams, County Programme Coordinators & County Training

Coordinators. This will allow the identification of needs (gaps) in terms of the much needed skills, methods and knowledge required by support teams along with identifying best practices to be shared. Following the Provincial needs analysis forums, the detailed 2014 Scouters Conference programme will be launched in October detailing the “open to all plenary sessions” as well as the

22

subject matter specific workshops that you can choose to attend depending on your Appointment/ Position. It may not be possible to include all of the needs identified in the conference programme and for that reason it is our intention to put in place tailored support programmes for each Scout Province following the conference, so that together we can strengthen Scouting Ireland in terms of the experiences and

opportunities we assist our Youth Members in choosing. We believe it is important that you attend the 2014 Scouters Conference as it will provide an excellent opportunity for us all to work as team to identify and develop solutions for the continued support of our Scout Group. We look forward to meeting you in November at the 2014 Scouters Conference, or perhaps at one of the Provincial needs analysis

forums (check with your Provincial Management / Support Team directly for dates). Please do not delay and arrange for your place to be booked as per above. On behalf of the conference planning team Yours in Scouting, Michael John Shinnick Chief Scout Thérèse Bermingham Chief Commissioner (Adult Resources) Ian Davy Chief Commissioner (Youth Programme)

Challenge 2014 23rd July – 31st July Somewhere in Ireland! Challenge is an annual intercultural expedition for Venture Scouts. It is an expedition of exploration and discovery. You will equally learn about yourself, through everything you do and by setting yourself targets to achieve. Your time on the expedition will be one of the most challenging, most fun, most draining, and most rewarding time of your life. The people you encounter and the memories you make will stay with you always.

28

Each team will return to base-camp after 5/6 days on the expedition, full of energy and enthusiasm and eager to share their experiences. While the event incorporates an assessment at completion, the Challenge is not a competition or a test, but an experience requiring teamwork, initiative, resourcefulness and endurance. To this end assessment is made on the basis of personal progress, not absolute standards. Challenge is an event of the highest quality achieving in a very evident way, for those who participate and the Association, the aim of scouting….. and it’s a unique adventure!

All the gear had to be brought with us including the climbing gear, ropes, a 4-man mountain tent and enough food to keep the hunger away for the first few days! We had a total of 5 full days in the Snowdonia national park, with another day on either end for travelling. On the first day, we left Galway Bus Station about 9 in the morning and about 12 hours later after 3 bus journeys, a ferry trip, lifts from some friendly drivers

40

and an hour-long hike up into the mountains, we finally arrived at our first campsite. We spent the first 2 nights in a corrie on the banks of Llyn Bochlwyd surrounded by the peaks of Tryfan, Glyder Fach and Glyder Fawr. Our first mountain day kicked off with a bowl of porridge and some milk cooled in the nearby stream. Once we had the lunch made we set off, actually heading down the mountain to the base of Tryfan along the A5. We climbed off up the North Ridge of Tryfan to the summit and then after a quick break, we proceeded down the South Ridge and began another ascent up what’s called Sinister Gully and up Bristly Ridge to the summit of Glyder Fach. We then proceeded down another ridge called Gribin Ridge straight back to the campsite for a well deserved dinner and some tea. The water in the area makes great tea so we had made sure to bring the tea pot and loose leaf to get the most out of it! Our second day came with a slightly slower start after our first day, but we were soon on our way north to the next valley over to an

area near the “Devils Kitchen”. We had originally planned to climb up Cneifon Arete but changed our minds when we got there and did a 3-pitch rock climb up the Idwal Slabs. It was easy climbing and we all climbed in boots instead of needing to take out the climbing shoes. All going fine until we started the final pitch and the clouds that had been rolling in all day eventually burst into a thunderstorm and heavy rain. We all hurried to try and put on rain gear (pretty hard in climbing gear 100m up) and we quickly finished the last pitch. Fortunately, the thunder and lightning seemed to move off as we finished climbing so we took a break for lunch under the storm shelter as we hadn’t eaten since breakfast. We were quite tired

Province News

and wet at this stage so we made a call to head back to the tent instead of continuing onto the summit of Glyder Fawr, in case any thunder and lightning started again. The next morning, we packed up our campsite and got ready to move. The day had been allocated as a rest day from the mountains and as a chance to move onto our next location. We went back down the mountain to the Idwal cottage and made our way through the valleys over to the town of Llanberis at the foot of Snowdon to replenish

41

our supplies for the next 2 days. We headed to the well known café of Pete’s Eats for lunch followed by what they call “pints” of tea. It didn’t actually come in a pint glass but it was definitely the largest mug of tea I’ve ever had. We ended up staying the night there to dry out the gear and to get a good nights rest, so we spent an easy evening eating our dinner and browsing a few of the many outdoor shops in Llanberis. The next day started with a 7am start. We cooked and ate our

breakfast, got our gear together, cleaned up and left Llanberis just before 9 on the local “Sherpa” bus to Pen-y-Pass, the classic starting point for climbing Snowdon. We began with a walk along the Pyg Track and after maybe 20 or 30 minutes of walking we left the track and turned northwards to our camping location. After some looking around, we eventually found the best spot for our tent and set up the camp. We left fairly promptly to contour around to the base our objective, the Clogwyn y Person Arete. This route starts with an easy rock climb followed by a grade 3 scramble and was a great route up Snowdon with some fantastic opportunities to practice our mountaineering skills. It took us a few hours of climbing and moving roped together to finally get to the top of the arete. We continued onto the summit of Garnedd Ugain, the second highest peak in Wales at 1065m, and then up to the summit of Snowdon at 1085m. Fortunately, the cloud cleared and the sun made an appearance to provide some glorious photo opportunities. At this point we had originally planned to continue down the path to return to the campsite but since the evening

had improved so much and with bad weather forecast for the following day, we decided to go back up along the ridge and down via Crib Goch. This is a knife-like ridge we had planned to do the following day after but it was certainly well worth it that day as the sun stayed out all the way back to the tent. However, it had been a long day and we only made it back after 9 o’clock. As expected, we were wrecked after completing 2 days objectives in one so we didn’t get up to much the following day. We went back into Llanberis for another pint of tea and went back to see Joe Brown’s and the V12 climbing shops, two of the best outdoor shops I’ve ever visited. It turned out to be drier than we expected for the day so we then

Province News

headed to back to the campsite via Pen-y-Pass and went to do some climbing and bouldering before cooking the dinner. We had our final morning in the tent on Friday morning and we left early yet again to begin our journey back to Galway, finally arriving back just after 9pm. We were all looking forward to a night back in our own beds but overall it was a very worthwhile trip. We all learned new skills from each other and it gave us a chance to do several

42

proper mountaineering routes over the space of a few short days, something that is not easily doable here in Ireland as the routes simply do not exist. Wales is definitely a destination that we would highly recommend for any other groups who would like a good mountain adventure outside of Ireland. The national park has an incredible amount of routes for all levels and it’s so easy to get there on foot or driving and it isn’t very expensive if you’re careful with the budget! The Togher scouts have been enjoying a great spell of weather which along with a super programme makes camp life very easy. The onsite activities are top class with staff that are second to none. Their friendliness from the time of arrival has continued day by day with many chats and cups of Barrys Tea. The programme has included Pioneering, Rafting, Zip Line, Caving along with Team Building and a Challenge Course. The nearby beach is just a ten minute walk away.

A visit to Belfast City saw the group taking in the Titanic Experience and it certainly is an experience with the feeling at some stages that you were building and on the Titanic. It was memorable for Cork scouts especially with the Liners link to Cobh.

The few days proved very successfull and all played their part with pride and professionalism giving everything they had to add to the athletes experience of the games. Barry McInerney Training CoOrdinator within the Limerick Scout County who coordinated the scouts and scouters to the various roles and venues with Special Olympics added “It’s great to get the

feedback as to how great the Scouts were and how they carried out their roles with such professionalism. For those of you who may have aching feet from walking, aching ribs from hugging, sore hands from clapping, sore cheek bones from smiling or even a little hoarse from lets say talking loud don’t worry these are just the symptoms of having Fun and the best way to get over all these is to tell everyone where you were over the last few days and what you were doing and before you know it you will be back to good health”.

The weather was great and the beavers took part in raft games, water slides, arts and crafts, team building games and a nature trail. Arriving at 5pm on the Friday evening the beavers were full of excitement and surprisingly they were all in bed early after the nature trail. On the Saturday morning all events kicked off and the beavers enjoyed every minute. Even the wicked witch made an appearances at the camp with her megaphone. Thanks to all for making this event a success and to all the beavers for their smiles.

two boys received their Chief Scout Award, the first in the 25th Cork since the introduction of the new ONE programme, and the first ever Cub Scouts in our Group. To achieve the award the boys undertook various challenges over a nine month period including planning and conducting a 20km hike in West Cork over eight hours, attending a full weekend camp as well as achieving Stage 4 in one of the Skills Badges and achieving four of the five Special Interest Badges.

51

Huge congratulations to them both from all in the Group. Derek Long, Cois Laoi County Commissioner, also presented the Woodbadge beads to five of our Adult Scouters. The beads are presented to adult Scouters upon full completion of their training. We would like to thank all those who shared the weekend with us, and to all parents and friends of the Group who assisted in so many ways and helped make the weekend a great success. We also thank all those who supported our Summer Raffle over the past weeks. Please see our Facebook page for a full list of winners.

Pelican was incredibly beautiful. The crew were amazing and kind. On our first day we were given a tour of the ship and a quick briefing on all the different lines and sails. We would learn more the following day as we didn’t set sail until then. Dinner was surprising. The cook ‘Dave’ was incredible. The food was delicious and he made sure all 30 of us were accommodated for. There were four per room and each room had it own bathroom with a small bath/shower. Sailing was definitely not what i expected it to be. Although it was tough

52

work I enjoyed every second of it I even learned some of the seamen language. The thrill of seeing what happened as each different line was pulled got me every time. My knot tying and navigational skills i learned in Scouts came in very handy. My journey lasted 11 days. We sailed form Belfast to the Isle of man, then on to Dublin for the maritime festival, then to Carlingford Lough and finally to Liverpool. During the Maritime festival in dublin I got to see the different Tall ships and meet the crews.. Everyone was extremely friendly but our crew was definitely the best. Every day we had fun wether we were on watch or just sitting in the mess (dining room) playing cards and drinking tea. I made so many friends on my trip and can’t wait to take part in another journey on the Pelican again next year. I would advise anyone and everyone to take part, It will change your life. One of the picture below ,there are a few children standing infront of a large group of people. This is my favorite picture as those children were part of the Make it Happen Foundation. On one of our days moored in Dublin a group of

kids from the foundation came on board for a few hours and we got the chance to help them become sailors, pirates and captains for the day. It was an amazing experience being able to do something for them.

On returning to Mt. Melleray, the water fight was a great success and whilst the leaders were definitely prime targets for the Cubs waterguns and balloons, they made a good effort in joining in the fun and giving as good as they got! The water fight was followed by a barbecue and ice cream party held in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland where the cubs and beavers from the house raised a â‚Ź400 donation. We had a great campfire led by Tom Power from 11th Dungarvan which the cubs really enjoyed. This was followed by an outdoor cinema, where a movie was shown at the campfire circle complete with popcorn and candy floss for all the cubs (and maybe some of the leaders too!). Our Scout helpers made good use of their pioneering skills building the screen for the movie and entertaining us with the music over the weekend. A very enjoyable weekend was had by all the groups that attended (3rd De La Salle, 4th Abbeyside, 11th Dungarvan, 15th Sacred Heart, 17th St. Pauls, 18/26th Ferrybank, and 27th Butlerstown). @WaterfordScouts www.waterfordscouts.com

Luckily, this home is a safe haven for them where they are well fed, well kept, well educated and most importantly, well loved. In 2012, members of the 35th (Dublin) Donore Avenue Scout Group travelled to the Flame of Hope School to build a sensory garden and play area in the home. Three weeks were spent working with the children as well as doing the construction and decorating work needed. These three weeks left lasting memories with those who took part in this expedition.

54

Recently, Sr. Ann Francesca has opened a school in an adjacent piece of land to the home. This has ensured that local children have access to primary education where they did not have before. In May 2014, 12 of the leaders and ventures from the group completed the Four Peaks Challenge in order to support Sr. Ann Francesca with some of the costs associated with this new school. The Four Peaks Challenge involves climbing the highest mountain in each of Ireland’s four provinces over one weekend. The peaks include Carrauntoohil (3,414 ft), Ireland’s highest peak,

Mweelrea Mountain in Co. Mayo (2,688 ft), Slieve Donard in Co.Down (2,796 ft) and Lugnaquilla in Co. Wicklow (3039 ft). What started out as a chat on a hike in the Mourne Mountains soon became a challenge that the whole group was involved in. The 12 climbers were supported by drivers and a catering team that spanned the age ranges of the group from cakes and buns prepared by the younger cubs and scouts to the dinners and breakfasts from the on road catering team. The challenge began at 6.01pm on Thursday 22nd May when we departed our scout hall on route to Kerry. There was plenty of chat and excitement on the bus and even talk of chancing Carrauntoohil that night. We arrived into Cronin’s yard and by midnight we had the tents pitched and the sleeping bags rolled out. We were met by our guide Tony Nation early the next morning and with the mist hiding the peak we headed off for the Devil’s ladder. For most of us it was our first time to climb Kerry’s highest peak. We completed our first peak in time for lunch and before the rain began to fall too heavily. The catering team

Province News

awaited us with hot drinks and sandwiches. In no time we were packed up and on the road again. The first peak had taken its toll and the sing song did not last long before heads began to roll and most caught a power nap on route to Galway. We arrived to an almighty feast with our hosts in Barna. They fed and watered us well and Christy Moore Live at the Point took us on to our final destination that evening in Delphi lodge. Our original plan had been to cross Killary Harbour in the morning but the tides were against us and we had to settle for the original beach approach to Mweelrea. In order to fulfill our challenge of two peaks on Saturday we had an early rise the next Morning. Up at 5.30 and with a speedy turnaround we were starting our climb at 7. Yet again our peak was out of sight. It was a tough climb but the distant sunshine kept us going. Determined to beat the rain we only took time for a quick photo at the top before making a quick descent!

55

Our drivers and catering team had been busy packing the bus and preparing more food. Hot sausage rolls appeared again much to the team’s delight. The rocky road to Dublin was a quiet one after a while when the team began to catch up on their few hours sleep the night before. A roadside feast was being prepared as we drove and with regular whatsapp updates from the wider support team we arrived into Lusk service station to be greeted by a fully set picnic in the carpark! Driving on to Donard there was determination in the air. Our tent pitchers drove on ahead and had our camp well under construction as we arrived for our next peak. Donard was a slow steady climb. As the light faded so too did our energy. We eventually reached the summit and somehow managed to squeeze the full team into the little hut for a selfie! The Top of the Town chipper was our goal and with headlamps and torches at the ready we made our steady descent. Again our support team swung into action the following morning. Bacon butties and sausage sambos, followed by cakes and treats made the perfect start to the final day.

We arrived to Fentons singing “One Lug” in the sunshine and began our climb in shorts and t-shirts. This quickly changed to full rain gear as we were suddenly met with the rain we had been avoiding most of the weekend!! Wet to our skin we cheered at the summit of our final peak and rolled out a very wet poster of our achievements for the final photo. 4 provinces, 3628m / 11,902ft, 840 road miles, 100 sausage rolls and 12 delighted climbers. Talk of a 3 Peak UK challenge has already begun…….

We would like to thank all of our supporters and friends who helped us complete this challenge. It really was a great night shared by many Scouting Friends. Again it was nice to see so many parents turning up. Our PSO Kevin also received a long service award. A delegation from Scouting Ireland met the Education minister in Stormount. The Minister was very interested in what we do and how we do it. The minister was very supportive of us and highly praised the work of our organisation.

59

We also ran a Group leader’s Training course which was a great success. Those who attended had a lot of fun as well as undertaking a training course on behalf of their groups. I would like to thank everyone who made this course possible from the team, participants and staff at Castle saunderson. We intend to run a second course and then follow it up with an advanced Group leader course dates to be finalised and released soon On the same weekend I attended the Scouting Trail day in Larch hill. This was a very special day to remember all those Scouts who have gone before us.

We have also had a pilot session of the new QSE ran in the province. This was another great success with the youth members really engaging with the process and having a lot of fun planning where the groups is going for the next couple of years. A second pilot is happening in our province soon. I will keep you informed as to the progress of this initiative. I would also like to congratulate the 1st Armagh Scout Group on receiving the Lord Mayor’s award for voluntary youth work. This really is great to hear that our work by our youth members and adults is being recognised.

I am also looking forward to the Investiture of our new group in Keady into the Brian Boru County. I would like to thank Joe, county commissioner for Brian Boru, inviting me to their county meeting. It was good to meet the folks at the meeting and to hear about the great work going on in the county. I am really looking forward to my own summer camp and would like to remind folks to send in the camping form to register their group/ sections summer camp especially if you are going international. I am also really proud of our youth Reps and the launch of this year’s youth Grants. This is a unique initiative managed by our youth reps so get your applications into the youth team I look forward to hearing about all your camps this summer, be safe and have fun and don’t forget your pictures for the magazine. Kieran McCann Provincial commissioner.

Scouting Ireland given major recognition Scouting Ireland was recently awarded the Freedom of the City of Lisburn in a major ceremony and event in Lisburn in Northern Ireland. The award, which was also given to other major uniformed youth organisations, recognised the work of the Scouting Ireland and specifically their Groups operating in the Lisburn area. No city council in Ireland or the UK has ever given such recognition before. Groups attending the ceremony included members from 23rd Antrim Derriaghy, 34th Belfast Lagmore, 9th Antrim Lisburn and 10th Antrim St. Anne’s. Scouting Ireland was also represented by Kieran McCann, Provincial Commissioner and John Lawlor, CEO. The celebrations involved a formal ceremony at a City Council Meeting, a lunch, a tree planting ceremony, a parade of over 2,500 young people through Lisburn and a concert by Luke Friend and Rough Cut of X-Factor fame, supported by local artists. Young people were presented with a special medal to commemorate the occasion.

The Mayor and Councillors of Lisburn City were very generous in giving this award and they and their staff worked tirelessly to make the celebrations a day to never be forgotten.

Scouting Ireland Leads the Way Scouting Ireland has been involved in a major 4 year piece of work in Northern Ireland to deliver CRED (Cross Community, Equity and Diversity) projects to young people in Uniform Youth Work Organisations. Those organisations are, Girl Guiding Ulster, Catholic Guides of Ireland, Boys Brigade NI, Girls Brigade NI, Scouting Ireland, Scout Association NI. These organisations between them are engaged with over 55,000 young people and have 12,000 volunteers operating in 1,500 local groups. With its partners Scouting Ireland has delivered 8 different projects in 4 years. The projects have involved over 300 young people and over 100 volunteers. • 4 Core CRED Projects involving both young people and volunteers. These projects each involved 3 weekends where young people and

volunteers experienced adventurous outdoor activities plus a series of challenging exercises addressing issues around the themes of Cross Community, equity and Diversity. Those projects were called UNIK, UNITE, CROSS CONNECTED and FUSION • 1 Peer Education Project involving young people learning to support other young people in addressing these challenging issues. • 2 Accredited CRED Training programmes for volunteers • Production of a CRED resource for volunteers. The projects were recently celebrated, with the Chief Scout in attendance, at a function at Parliament Buildings at Stormont in Belfast. Here the work of the young people was recognised and Scouters and other volunteers received certificates of completion for the specialist training. The Uniform Sector in Northern Ireland has also released a major report on their work entitled “We are all the same”. This comes from graffiti a young person wrote on one of the peace walls, in Belfast, and illustrates the thinking of the young people after taking part in one of the projects.

a new home, one with adequate space for our vehicles, equipment and training needs. You may of already of heard of “Walk the Line” and “Run the Line”, but in 2014 as part of our birthday celebrations we’re running a special once-off fundraiser – Dance the Line – this is Strictly Come Dancing mountain rescue style. We’d like you to nominate a dancer to take part. We need 24 dancers, so we’re looking for 12 lads and 12 ladies from all agegroups and backgrounds. Each

dancer will receive 7 weeks training, so no experience is necessary – and no experience is preferable as this event is all about the craic. Dance the Line is planned for Saturday 1st November in O’Reilly Hall UCD, so the first meeting with the dance coaches will take place in early September to organise the training schedule for the 7 weeks. What we need from each dancer: • Minimum sponsorship of €300 – but there will be bonus points on the night for the most sponsorship money raised • Sell a minimum of 20 tickets each (€20 per ticket)

• Commit to 7 weeks training (one night a week) What you will get from us: • Expert tuition from professional dance instructors – who insist on being able to teach absolute beginners to strut their stuff in just 7 weeks • Support of a Facebook campaign • Mycharity.ie page • Posters – with professional photographs of the dancers • Sponsorship cards • Promotional video We intend to be around for at least another 30 years, and this year we’re asking you to go the extra mile to ensure that happens. If you could please run this past your members and let us know ASAP if there is anyone interested in Dancing the Line for DWMRT.

It is not just the Beavers who have undergone this heartache. Joann’s two daughters Aoife (a Venture) and Orlaith (a scout) has had to say their goodbyes to similar scenes of emotions. Though they will all be missed dearly. It has to be said that 18th Santry Scouts as a whole has been made a greater place with them in it. In all aspects of scouting they have touched so many lives. The experience and enthusiasm brought to scouting will be felt for many years to come. They will be remembered most of all for the smiles they brought to all our faces. Joann is not leaving the scouting family she is just moving to a different ‘camp site’. The family have already made arrangements to join the local Scout troop in Australia. Plans are in place to extend the hands of friendship and possibly pair up the two troops (even if its only through digital media). You never do know, we may end up pitching a tent in the family’s garden and throwing ‘a few shrimp on the Barbie’. 18th Santry Scouts would like to wish Joann and Family (Joann, Richard, Dáire, Áoife and Órlaith all the best of luck in the next chapter of their adventure. There will always

be a place in our troop (and hearts) for you all. Ireland’s loss is Australia’s Gain. We would also like to thank Mary McGrath (15 years service) And John McGovern (23 years service), two of our cub leaders who after giving a total of 38 Years to 18 Santry have retired and decided to hang up their neckers. Their legacy will continue in the lives if every cub that attended.
