Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Takoma Foundation’s Beerfest V, Takoma Park’s favorite nuclear-free, hops-powered fundraiser. We are amazed and pleased that this event continues to grow; more than 500 people will attend this year, making this our biggest Beerfest to date. We have 13 brewers in attendance this year, also a record-breaking figure. All of the beer has been donated. The generosity of area craft brewers—as well as food donations from local restaurants and support from numerous beer and wine shops—has enabled us to maximize the money we raise for Foundation grants. We will net at least $15,000 this year, and those funds will be funneled quickly into local projects. The Foundation’s wide range of grants reflects the diversity and creativity in Takoma Park

and neighboring areas. In our spring 2013 grants cycle, we supported arts enrichment for the children of African immigrants, a tree-planting project, new equipment for the Community Kitchen and Blair High School’s music program, a multicultural film series, and much more. We also contributed to beloved Takoma Park traditions such as the Folk Festival, JazzFest, and the Independence Day Parade. As you enjoy the afternoon and evening, please consider joining with us to support the many organizations and activities that make our community a wonderful place to live. Sincerely, Franca Brilliant, President Scott Ward, Vice President

The Cady-Lee Mansion

Built in 1887 in the Queen Anne style, the Cady-Lee Mansion is the sole reminder of a row of grand Victorian homes that once lined Eastern Avenue. The 22-room home is on the National Register of Historic Places, and visitors are welcome to enjoy the restored ground floor and porch during the beerfest. The Cady-Lee has been made available for the beerfest through the generosity of its owners, the Forum for Youth Investment.

Who We Are What We Do The Takoma Foundation is your community foundation. We raise money locally and distribute it to innovative, community-based organizations in Takoma Park, Takoma DC, and Silver Spring. Our grants are typically $500 to $2,000—but they go a long way. Our priorities are to help immigrants develop entrepreneurial skills and expand access to education and enriching activities for youth in our area. We also support great ideas that contribute to our cultural and social community, strengthen our local economy, and protect the environment. The Takoma Foundation has funded more than 120 projects in just the last five years. In all, we have raised and distributed more than $400,000 since 1989.

Photo by Laura Barclay The Takoma Foundation supported Old Town Takoma Business Association’s reCYCLE Art of Bike project, as well Takoma Radio, the Community Kitchen, youth sports, park beautification, and more.

Beers on Tap 3 Stars Brewing (www.threestarsbrewing.com) •

• •

Citra and Lemon Peel Saison. This bright and refreshing brew has subtle citrus notes and a touch of tartness from lemon peel and Citra, Centennial, and Cascades hops. ABV, 5.0%. Peppercorn Saison. This beer has a smooth, underlying bitterness and a clean, dry finish with some lingering notes of citrus. ABV, 6.5%. Southern Belle. This imperial brown ale packs a punch with its deep, rich malt flavors and a hint of roasted coffee. It’s smooth, yet slightly effervescent, and has a slight bitterness at the finish. ABV, 8.7%.

Baying Hound Aleworks (www.bayinghoundales.com) • • • • • •

Taj Mahound. A meld of a classic brown ale and an American IPA. A reverse insertion of hops creates a totally different flavor profile than your standard IPA. ABV, 7%. IBUs, 69. Colonel Wimsey Six-Month Ale. Aged for six months in a Buffalo Trace bourbon barrel. Dry hopped a second time with Columbus hops. ABV, 8.5%. Bernie’s Backyard Harvest Ale. With 3.5 lbs. wet/undried Centennial and Sterling hops mixed in at the very end of the brewing process, this ale is memorable. Tindalos Pumpkin Ale. Named for the fictional Hound of Tindalos, this ale is brewed with copious amounts of pumpkin and just a touch of spice and vanilla. Rye is added to help bring out more of the spicy nuances. ABV, 8%. IBUs, 13. Darwin. Open-fermented and then transferred to a bourbon barrel and fermented with buckthorn, this brew retains a slight sourness, followed by an almost pinot noir–like flavor, and oak, vanilla, and bourbon notes. ABV, 9%. Malinois. A Belgian rye pale ale that’s dry and deceivingly light for having a high alcohol content. This beer has a touch of spiciness from the rye, as well as clove notes and some fruitiness, such as banana. ABV, 8%. IBUs, 28.

DC Brau (www.dcbrau.com) •

The Corruption™ IPA. DC Brau’s take on a Pacific Northwest IPA is brewed with Pale 2-row, C-10, Honey, and Victory malts and hopped with 40 lbs. of Columbus hops per brew. This beer straddles the line between IPA and Imperial IPA and has a supportive malty backbone with an assertive hop presence that smacks your mouth with a resinous bitterness followed by pleasant aromas of pine sap and burnt spruce. ABV, 6.5%. IBUs, 80.

This version of the seasonal classic is light amber in color, with a rich toasted malt character and balanced by noble hops. ABV, 5.6%.

gordon BierSCH (www.gordonbiersch.com) •

• • •

Czech Pilsener. An homage to the beer that started the Pilsner revolution. This Bohemian-style Pilsner exhibits a beautiful balance of rich malt and spicy Saaz hops. The finish is long, with lingering hop spice and bitterness and rich, bready malt. It is a two-time GABF Gold Medal winner in 2004 and 2007 (Silver in 2009) for Bohemian-style Pilsner. ABV, 5.2%. IBUs, 30. Hefeweizen. A classic Bavarian-style hefeweizen with heady aromas and flavors of banana and clove, sweet malt, and a refreshing tart finish. ABV, 5.5%. IBUs, 12. Maerzen. A traditional Oktoberfest beer. Amber color, toasty malt, and just enough spicyfloral Hallertau hops to balance the mild caramel sweetness. ABV, 5.8%. IBUs, 18. Rye IPA on cask. A bold West Coast-style IPA. Big hop aroma and flavor are joined with the earthy-spicy flavors typical for rye malt. This beer is conditioned in a firkin, the traditional way of preparing beers for British pubs. The lower-than-normal carbonation make the beer smooth and drinkable.

growlerS Brew puB (www.growlersofgaithersburg.com) •

Growlers will be pouring a couple of popular selections from its extensive menu of 20 summer and fall beers. Visit the Growlers table to find out if you’ll be enjoying a Kölsch, IPA, stout, porter, wheat beer, lager, or something really outside the box, such as the Chesapeake Old Bay Ale or Your Mom’s Apple Pie Ale.

HeaVy SeaS (www.hsbeer.com) •

Red Sky. This rustic farmhouse saison ale has an eye for tradition. Belgian yeast and candi sugar shape the aroma and give the beer a light, but robust, taste. It’s fruity and bright, but with a somewhat tart finish from Strisselspalt hops. ABV, 7.5%. IBUs, 17.5. Gold Ale. Award winner at the American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup, this easy-drinking beer pours a deep golden color. It smells slightly floral and herbal, thanks to a hopback full of Cascade and Centennial hops. ABV, 4.5%. IBUs, 17.

new Belgium •

Ranger IPA. This clear, amber beauty bursts at the starting gate with an abundance of hops: Cascade (citrus), Chinook (floral/citrus), and Simcoe (fruity) lead off the beer, with Cascade added again for an intense, dry hop flavor. Brewed with pale and dark caramel malts that harmonize the hop flavor from start to finish, Ranger is great for hopinistas. ABV, 6.5%. IBUs, 70. PumpKick Ale. This pumpkin ale uses traditional seasonal spices, like cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. But a healthy dose of cranberries and a touch lemongrass give it a playful nature, with a not-too-sweet finish. ABV, 6%. IBUs, 18.

old dominion/fordHam (www.olddominionbrewery.com) • •

Dominion Octoberfest. A seasonal Maerzen-style Lager. Eight types of imported German malt and three hop varieties create this amber-colored glory. ABV, 6%. Fordham “Rosie Parks” Oyster Stout. The legendary skipjack Rosie Parks once dredged for oysters on the Chesapeake Bay. The fastest of the fleet and a beauty to behold, she is now undergoing restoration at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. In her honor, this stout contains Chesapeake Bay oysters, and a portion of bottle sales proceeds goes towards restoring this revered piece of history. ABV, 5.5% .

Root Beer. Fordham’s famous root beer also will be available in limited amounts.

port City Brewing (www.portcitybrewing.com) •

Optimal Wit. This beer is brewed in the Belgian wit bier tradition: with raw wheat and oats, and steeped with coriander, orange peel, and grains of paradise. This unfiltered beer is a pale golden color, with a bit of cloudy haze from natural yeast in the bottle, but layers of complex, nuanced flavors. ABV, 5%. IBUs, 15.

roCk Bottom – BetHeSda (www.rockbottom.com) •

Head Brewer Geoff Lively uses Yakima Valley (Washington State) hops to brew a wide range of beers, including Kölsch, White Ale, Red Ale, IPA, and a rotation of stouts and porters. Visit his table to find out which beers he has decided to bring.

An award-winning German hefeweizen with a light body and notes of banana and clove. This unfiltered wheat beer is very refreshing. ABV, 4.6%. IBUs, 9. Boxcarr.
