The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) is dedicated to exhibiting outstanding examples of modern and contemporary art, architecture and design in order to encourage conversations around the ideas of our time. We are eager to share with you—teachers and students—this season’s program of learning experiences, from arts activities to guided tours and illustrated presentations brought free of charge to your classroom. We invite you to participate and discover how we can collaborate to bring students a range of inspiring activities. We design the programs featured in this brochure to provide your students with enriching activities that address the Arizona Visual Arts Standards and meet your grade-level expectations. October 2, 2015 – January 10, 2016 Drama and stillness, beauty and strangeness, hard science and science fiction—these dualities come together in the work of Kelly Richardson. She takes cues from landscape painting, cinema and planetary research—specifically current Mars studies. Her video installations offer imaginative glimpses into the future and prompt a careful consideration of the present. Organized by the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Chris Fraser: Looking Back October 3, 2015 – January 10, 2016 Oakland-based artist Chris Fraser brings his experiments in light, shadow and movement to the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art’s fourth Architecture + Art commission. Inspired by the exquisite desert sky, Fraser will create a luminous room-sized environmental sculpture where visitors navigate shape-shifting silhouettes and shafts of light. Our cities are experiencing incredible growth and innovation that will drastically change urban living in the coming years. Drawing inspiration from recent developments in architecture and "smart city" technology, students imagine and create a fanciful "city of light." High school students from the New School for Arts and Academics worked with artist Hilary Harp and their art teacher Hank Fries to create the work for this exhibition. Yo Soy…Je Suis…I Am…The Future

January 29 – April 27, 2016 Shimmering rows of reflective compact discs lit by pulsating spotlights comprise Bruce Munro’s Ferryman’s Crossing, an installation that evokes sunlight bouncing off the surface of flowing water. That suggestion of water serves as a metaphor for the continuous flow of time—melding past, present and future into a single, ever-moving whole. Betye Saar: Still Tickin’ January 31 – May 1, 2016 There is a touch of alchemy to Betye Saar’s work: simple objects transformed into powerful art. For six decades, she has crafted compelling, astute and expressive artworks that bravely critique forms of everyday racism, sexism and oppression while simultaneously celebrating the curiosity and beauty found in transcending these outmoded categories means of division and separation. This retrospective explores the breadth and depth of Saar’s sculptures and works on paper, and includes a number of speciallyconstructed installations. THE FUTURE VSA, a Jean Kennedy Smith Arts and Disability Program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, annually curates an exhibition of artwork by children with disabilities from around the world. This year’s theme Yo Soy...Je Suis...I Am... The Future encouraged children to think about their future: Who will I be in the future? Where will I live? What are my hopes and dreams? How will I change the world? SMoCA brings their optimistic and insightful artistic answers to the Young@Art Gallery. free museum tours Docent-Led or Self-Led Tours Grades: K – 12 Bring your class to the Museum for a 45-minute tour of our exhibitions. These tours are led by our SMoCA Docents, volunteer tour guides who receive special training from the curators, artists and experts on each of the exhibitions. They will engage your students in interactive tours that explore both the exhibitions and art in general. Tours contain concepts included in the Arizona Visual Arts Standards. Educators are also welcome to register for self-led tours. Create a field trip with a tour of the Museum and a picnic lunch in the Civic Center Park. The park provides plenty of grass, shade trees and Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture for kids to enjoy. Please note that picnic lunches are not provided by the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. free school programs Art Start
Grades: Pre-K – K (Ages 4 – 5) This program provides an introduction to the wonderful world of art. Children visit the Museum and take part in a tour designed to inspire confidence, self-awareness and self-expression, as well as to promote language development. An accompanying hands-on art project helps strengthen physical and perceptual skills. Art Start is sponsored by Scottsdale Charros; and Karen and John Voris

School Outreach Presentations Grades: K – 12
SMoCA Docents present thematic talks with interactive, 40-minute PowerPoint slide programs, all of which address concepts in the Arizona Visual Arts Standards. Presentations are available to schools between Scottsdale’s east border and west to SR-51; south to McKellips Road; and north to the 101 Freeway in Phoenix. free title 1 field trips SMoCA and Act One* are working together to create special field trip experiences for students of Title 1 schools. Focusing on one exhibition each season, participating classroom teachers will receive a packet that includes pre-visit and post-visit lessons, including a PowerPoint presentation to help students get the most out of their visit. Free bus transportation available. * Act One engages students from Title 1 Schools in arts learning opportunities with field trips that offer teachers and students a lasting and meaningful experience.

Fall Tour: Space and Light October – December Grades: K – 12 The fall tour will focus on the exhibition Kelly Richardson: Tales on the Horizon. This exhibition presents an opportunity for students to sense what it might be like to stand on the surface of Mars. Spring Tour: Art and Memory February – April Grades: K – 12 The spring tour will feature work from the exhibition Betye Saar: Still Tickin’. Pioneering African American artist Betye Saar is known for her mixed media assemblages that challenge myths and stereotypes. Students will see how the artist shares her personal memories to create art that gives us insights about these issues. Plan early to bring your classes to experience SMoCA on an educational field trip created just for them. This event will feature the exhibition Kelly Richardson: Tales on the Horizon, where students can almost feel that they have landed on Mars… All the exhibitions have a space or light theme that will bring out their curiosity about science and art! Live music, interactive gallery activities and hands-on art projects make this a great introduction to art museums for teens.
