SEMMES MIDDLE SCHOOL RENOVATION

THE SEMMES MIDDLE SCHOOL PROJECT IS A RENOVATION OF A 1950S BUILDING FOR THE EAST COAST MIGRANT HEAD START PROGRAM AIMED AT SERVING MIGRANT FARMWORKER’S CHILDREN THROUGH EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION. THE BUILDING RENOVATION INCLUDED THE DOCUMENTATION, ANALYSIS, DESIGN, LEAD AND ASBESTOS ABATEMENT, DEMOLITION AND CONSTRUCTION. THE PROJECT’S PROGRAMMING INCLUDED 3 CLASSROOMS AREAS FOR INFANTS, TODDLERS, AND MIDDLESCHOOLERS AND 1 OFFICE SPACE.

COLOR & LIGHT

COLOR WAS USED AS A TOOL TO ALLOW THE ENVIRONMENT TO AID IN THE PASSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF THE STUDENTS. USING A PRIMARY COLOR FOR EACH OF THE DIFFERENT ROOMS GIVES THE ROOM AN IDENTITY WITH THE CHILDREN. THE CLASSROOM’S COLOR WAS PROJECTED TO THE CORRIDOR VIA TINTED STOREFRONT TO AID THE TODDLERS AND BELOW WITH WAYFINDING AND BUILDING ORIENTATION. THE INFANT AND TODDLER CALSSROOMS ONLY HAD ONE PRIMARY COLOR IN THE ENVIRONMENT TO MINIMIZE THE STIMULATION. IN THE ENVIRONMENT FOR THE PRE-SCHOOLER STUDENTS WE ADDED MULTIPLE COLORS, PRIMARY AND SECONDARY, TO THE CLASSROOM TO ORGANIZE THE ROOM’S ACTIVITIES.

LIGHT WAS USED AS A PHENOMOLOGICAL TOOL TO CONDITION THE SPACE USED TO INFLUENCE THE CHILD’S MOOD. THE EXISTING BUILDING HAD LARGE OPENINGS IN THE MASONY ON THE NORTH FACADE THAT HAD BEEN COVERED. WE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF ALLOWING THE COOL NORTHERN LIGHT INTO THE CLASSROOM BY ORIENTING THE CLASSROOM TO ALLOW SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES PER AGE GROUP TO TAKE PLACE IN THE MOST INTENSE NATURAL LIGHTING. THE EXISTING OPENINGS EXTENDED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE EXTERIOR STRUCTURAL BEAMS WHICH WAS ABOVE THE DROP CEILINGS. OUR SOLUTION TO MAXIMZE THE LIGHT WAS TO CREATE A FURDOWN ALLOWING THE WINDOW’S FULL HEIGHT. THIS ALSO GAVE US THE ABILITY TO USE OUR CLASSROOM ASSIGNED COLORS TO CONDITION THE SPACE. THE INFANT’S ACTIVITY IN THE INTENSE LIGHT IS FEEDING AND PLAY SO WE CONDITION THE SPACE IN A BLUE COLOR BY PAINTING THE FURDOWN IN A HIGH GLOSS BLUE INVOKING A RELAXING EMOTION. THE TODDLERS WE USED A YELLOW TO ENCOURAGE PLAY AND EVOKE EXCITEMENT. IN THE PRE-SCHOOL WE USED A GREEN TO EVOKE A CALM LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.

CALMING AND SOOTHING EFFECTS. CAN HELP REDUCE ANXIETY AND INCREASE. IDEAL FOR QUIET SPACES.

ENERGETIC AND CHEERFUL EFFECTS. INSPIRES MOTIVATION AND CREATES A SENSE OF ALERTNESS. IDEAL FOR MOVEMENT SPACES.

STRESS REDUCING AND BALANCED. HELPS TO PROMOTE CONCENTRATION. IDEAL FOR LEARNING SPACES.

MILLWORK IS DESIGNED FOR THE ERGONOMIC HIEGHT OF THE AGE OF THE CLASSROOM AVERAGE HEIGHT OF THE STUDENT.

THE SOUND AMPHITHEATER

THE SOUND AMPHITHEATER IS THE ANCHORE PROJECT OF A LARGER 55-ACRE TOWN COMMONS PARK PROJECT. THE PROJECT IS AIMED AT FOSTERING THE DEVELOPMENT OF OF A NEW CITY CENTER IN GUATIER. THE AMPITHEATER IS ESTIMATED TO BRING IN $15 MILLION TO THE REGION.

THE PROJECT INCLUDEDS AN 80,000 SF LAWN, STAGE, BACK STAGE OFFICES, DRESSING ROOMS, AND EQUIPMENT LOADING DOCKS. THE PROJECT ALSO HAS 2 CONCESSION STANDS 4 RESTROOMS AND 1 LOWSENSORY RESTROOM.

ARCHITECTURE FACILITATES THE WAY WE LIVE OUR DAILY LIVES. DIGNITY IS NOT FOUND IN THE GRAND GESTURES OF DESIGN RATHER IN THE MONDANE DETAILS THAT ARCHITECTURE OFFERS US. DESIGNING WITH RESPECT FOR DIGNITY WILL OFFER INCLUSION TO ALL IN OUR COMMUNITIES.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS:

ACOUSTICS: MINIMIZE BACKGROUND NOISE, ECHOS, AND REVERBERATION.

SPACIAL SEQUENCING: LOGICAL FLOW OF SPACE AND ACTIVITIES.

ESCAPE PLACES: PROVIDE A NUETRAL SENSORY ENVIRONMENT

TRANSITIONS: OFFERS A SPACE TO RECALIBRATE SENSES FROM SPACE TO SPACE

MATERIAL AND TECHNOLOGY: MANUAL ON/OFF SWITCHES, LOW VOC AND SOUND PRODUCING SELECTIONS

FROSTED GLAZING DOOR TO FACILITATE THE TRANSITION FROM LOW SENSORY TO OUTDOORS

ESCAPE PLACE WITH MULTIDIRECTIONAL SEATING TO FACILITATE CUSTOMIZABLE DIRECTIONALITY TO

DOWN TOWN JACKSON WELLNESS CENTER

THE WELLNESS CENTER IS A COMBINED FOOD PROCESSING PLANT AND FITNESS FACILITY. IT IS LOCATED IN A FOOD DESERT, A CONSEQUENCE OF THE LOW INCOME COMMUNITY IT SITS IN. THE CENTER IS MEANT TO BE AN EDIFICATION TOOL TO THE CITIZENS AS WELL AS A SOURCE OF ECONOMICS.

PARKING GARAGE

THE WELLNESS CENTER CONTAINES A PARKING GARAGE THAT INTERTWINES THROUGH THE BUILDING’S PROGRAMED SPACES. THE GARAGE WAS AN EXPLORATION OF HOW TO ADDRESS A PARKING SITUATION IN URBAN AREAS WITHOUT FAVORING THE VEHICLE ON THE PRIME REAL ESTATE THAT HUMANS INTERACT WITH.

FORM

THE BUILDING FORM WAS DESIGNED BASED OFF OF A SERIES OF SUN STUDIES THROUGH THE YEAR. THE DESIGN INTENT WAS TO OPTIMIZE NATURAL SUN LIGHT IN THE PLANT GROWING AREAS. THE NEED FOR SUN LIGHT TO PENETRATE DEEP INTO THE BUILDING DICTATED NARROW SPACES AND A DEFINED COURTYARD.

WINDOW

THE WINDOW IS DESIGNED TO FUNCTION WITH A RAIN SCREEN AND COLLECT WATER IN THE SILL. THE WATER MOVES FROM A TANK DOWN CHANNELS INSIDE THE FACADE’S STEEL TUBES TO THE CISTERN.

SUPERUSE PAVILION

SUPERUSE PAVILION IS A PROJECT THAT AIMS TO EDIFY THE LOCAL POPULATION OF STARKVILLE, MS ABOUT REGENERATIVE SUSTAINABILITY. THE PROJECT RECLAIMED AN ABANDONED FUEL STATION CANOPY AND USED IT TO CREATE THE PAVILION. THE PAVILION IS A PART OF MUSEUM GROUNDS IMPROVEMENT PROJECT FEATURING A RAIN GARDEN, SAND FILTER AND WATER CISTERN. THE GROUND’S MASTER PLAN SHOWS A WAY OF IMPROVING AIR QUALITY AND STORING CLEAN WATER THROUGH RECYCLING.

SELECTED FOR THE STUDIO’S BOOK AWARD

THE VOLUNTEER FIRE STATION HAS A LIVE WORK RELATIONSHIP IN TERMS OF PROGRAMMING. THE SMALL TOWN OF CALIDONIA IS A RURAL TOWN THAT NEEDS PUBLIC SPACE FOR CLASSES AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT . THE FIRE STATION ACTS AS BOTH PRIVATE SPACES FOR THE FIREFIGHTERS AND A CIVIC SPACE FOR THE CITY. THE PARTI ALLOWS FOR A SEPARATION OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPACES, PROVIDING A CLASS ROOM AND A OPEN GREEN SPACE .

THE PLAN WAS DERIVED FROM THE FORM’S ABILITY TO DRAW OUTSIDE AIR THROUGH THE BUILDING TO SEPARATELY EXHAUST THE GARAGE AND THE LIVING SPACES BY CONNECTING THE LIVING SPACES WITH THE “TUNNEL’” ON THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE BUILDING.

PASSIVE

THE BUILDING’S ORIENTATION ON THE SITE WAS PLACED WITH THE SOUTHERN FACADE INTO THE WIND FLOW, DICTATING SMALLER OPENINGS ON THE NORTH FACADE TO DRAW AIR THROUGH THE BUILDING WITH NEGATIVE PRESSURE.

LOCATION: SANDERSON CENTER, STARKVILLE, MISSISSIPPI TIME: 2011, 1st YEAR DESIGN BUILD PROJECT

COLLABORATION: STUDENTS AND PROFESSORS OF ARCHITECTURE

FEATURED IN MISSISSIPPI STATE BARNWORKS 2010/11

THE SANDERSON ATHLETIC CENTER ON MISSISSIPPI STATE CAMPUS ASKED THE ARCHITECTURE DEPARTMENT TO CONSTRUCT A STUDENT LOUNGE FROM AN OLD BASKETBALL COURT’S WOOD FLOORING. THE SPACE THE LOUNGE IS LOCATED IN IS 42 FEET TALL IN A NARROW CORRIDOR. THE IDEA BEHIND THE DESIGN WAS TO INTRODUCE A HUMAN SCALE IN THE SPACE FOR THE STUDENTS TO WAIT FOR 10 TO 15 MINUTES FOR THEIR FRIENDS. BECAUSE OF THE SMALL BUDGET THE WOOD WAS FINISHED WITH A SEALANT ON THE LIGHT AND FOR THE DARK FINISH THE WOOD WAS BURNED.

CAAD CAMPUS CONNECTOR

THE CAAD CAMPUS CONNECTOR HOUSES CLASS ROOMS, ART STUDIOS, FACULTY OFFICES, AND AN ART GALLERY. THE CAAD CAMPUS IS GEOGRAPHICALLY SEPARATED FROM THE MAIN PORTION OF CAMPUS AND THE GRID’S ORIENTATION IS SHIFTED OVER THE GEOGRAPHY. THE CAAD CONNECTOR REALIGNS THE PUBLIC SPACE AND PROCESSION’S TO THE CAMPUS’S MAIN ALIGNMENT.
