Welcome Welcome to the third Commonwealth Water Polo Championships. I would particularly like to welcome the players and staff of the twelve teams representing the eight competing nations.

I am delighted to welcome you to Aberdeen Sports Village for the Commonwealth Water Polo Championships 2014.

We are thrilled to host such a high profile competition as the first event in our brand new Aquatics Centre and to showcase Aberdeen as the perfect venue for such a prestigious competition. This is a great chance for the people of the North East to experience a Commonwealth event in the heart of our City.

I am very pleased that Scotland has been able to host this tournament and would like to thank our sponsors and partners for their support and backing. Without them the Championships would not be as they are today.

Hosting the ‘Homecoming’ Commonwealth Water Polo Championships in Aberdeen will offer a taste of the Commonwealth Games to communities in the North East, as well as inspire and mobilise the Water Polo fraternity across Scotland. In addition, the event, which has previously been held in both Manchester in 2002 and Perth in 2006, will further enhance Scotland’s event portfolio on the international stage.

As Water Polo is not one of the sports being included in the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the Commonwealth Water Polo Championships provides the opportunity for Commonwealth nations to compete against each other. The event provides a unique chance for nations to compete against teams that they would not normally play. As a minority sport this opportunity is very significant, as the number of events that are open to these nations is limited.

We are confident that, like our acclaimed Sports Centre, our Aquatics Centre will prove to be a fantastic facility for the people of the North East, and we look forward to attracting many more international competitions.

It is with great pleasure I welcome the Commonwealth Water Polo Championships 2014 to Aberdeen Sports Village Aquatics Centre. Aberdeen can take great credit for this aquatic discipline, as Aberdeen was the birthplace of the sport back in 1877. In fact, it was along the banks of the River Dee where people witnessed the first ever game taking place at the Bon Accord Festival. In those days, members of Bon Accord Swimming Club would have had strong river currents to contend with, however, the International teams visiting Aberdeen this week have this wonderful world class facility to compete in, and everything that comes along with the Sports Village.

The Scottish Water Polo Committee and the Water Polo community are committed to the development of Water Polo in Scotland, from Mini Polo in primary schools through the development of junior players up to the Scottish National Squads and beyond to GB representation.

We see the Commonwealth Water Polo Championships as a fundamental boost to the development strategy.

Finally I would like to thank the staff, officials and volunteers who have dedicated their time to enable the Championships to take place. I would like to give a special thanks to Forbes Dunlop, CEO of Scottish Swimming, who has worked closely with us to ensure the project is a success, and Jenni Fraser from Visit Aberdeen, along with the staff from Scottish Swimming and Aberdeen Sports Village.

This event reflects our commitment to fulfilling our ambitions in the City’s Sport and Physical Activity Strategy, Fit for Future, where we are committed to raising the profile of sport in Aberdeen, and encouraging people to be involved in sport whether competing, officiating, volunteering or supporting local heroes.

I am confident that the Council’s investment in this event will contribute towards creating a lasting legacy of Water Polo and other aquatic sports in the city. This will be achieved through Scottish Water Polo, Scottish Swimming, council officers and local partners including Aberdeen Sports Village and Sport Aberdeen working together to explore all aspects of development activity that can be delivered during and post this event.

A year of Brilliant Moments

The History of Water Polo Aquatic Polo, Aquatic Handball, Water Baseball and Football in the Water were some of names used for team games played with a ball in water in the early 1870s. Rules varied and there were no inter-club competitions. Glasgow’s swimming clubs pioneered the incipient development of Water Polo.

William Wilson, Baths Master at Arlington Baths Club, Glasgow, drew up rules for Aquatic Football in 1876 at the request of the President of Bon Accord SC, Aberdeen. It was played at the club’s annual swimming championships in the River Dee in 1877 but the moving water affected play. Wilson took it indoors, adjusting the rules, transforming it from a rough and tough scramble into a more skilful activity and inter-club matches became common in Glasgow by 1880.

Awarding trophies, clubs organised inter-club competitions, but its initial popularity was consolidated after 1886, when the Associated Swimming Clubs of Glasgow (ASCG), the forerunner of the Scottish Amateur Swimming Association (SASA), inaugurated the Aquatic Football Challenge Cup, which is still being competed for today. The inaugural annual England vs. Scotland fixture took place in 1890 at Kensington Baths, London. Scotland won 4—0, with the skill of the Scots more than compensating for the heaviness of the English.

The Swimming Association of Great Britain recognized the game, now called Water Polo, and formulated a set of rules expanding on William Wilson’s rulebook.

1892

The International Board of the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) publish a uniform set of rules.

The Board included representatives from Scotland.

1900

Water Polo is played at the Olympic Games in Paris.

1901

Warrender beat Bon Accord 3—0 in the first Scottish Championship (Scottish Cup).

1908

George Cornet (Inverness Amateurs) is the first Scot to win a gold medal as a member of the Great Britain and Ireland team at the Olympic Games in London in 1908.

1949

Motherwell win the ASA Club Championship and retain it in 1950.

1984

Menzieshill were the first Scottish team to win the British Womens Championship.

2012

Portobello men’s team win the British Championships, the first Scottish team to do so.

Today there are 18 Water Polo clubs in Scotland and over 500 players. Regular competitions for junior and senior teams are held in deep water pools at the Royal Commonwealth Pool, Edinburgh and the University of Stirling. Scottish teams compete in the British Water Polo League at the highest level.

Activities & Attractions Aberdeen Harbour Cruises Why not sit back and relax aboard Aberdeen’s Harbour Cruise, giving a whole new vista to the city. It’s also a great opportunity to spot some of Aberdeen’s cutest residents — the bottlenose dolphins that feed in the harbour entrance (as featured on BBC Springwatch).

Old Aberdeen Enjoy soaking up the history with a local tour guide in these cobbled streets and alleyways where monks and scholars, traders and travelers settled. Today, the 14th century St. Machar’s Cathedral still stands and Kings College, the forerunner to Aberdeen University, was founded by Bishop Elphinstone in 1495.

Torry Battery — Dolphin Watching Aberdeen is the best city in Europe for watching dolphins. An RSPB guide can be arranged to help the group spot these playful mammals from the Torry Battery. This spot also offers an excellent vantage point over Aberdeen.

Transition Extreme A world-class extreme sports centre and award-winning social enterprise down at Aberdeen Beach, offering Climbing, Skatepark and High Ropes Course all in one centre!

Maritime Museum Art Gallery

Duthie Park & Winter Gardens

One of the best provincial art galleries in the UK, which opened in 1885. It is home to a fine collection of paintings, sculptures & graphics from the 15th Century to the present day. The gallery also hosts visiting exhibitions, so there is always something new to see. The gallery has recently been awarded £30million pounds for an exciting and extensive refurbishment and expansion plan.

The park has just undergone extensive restoration and the works have restored many of the original Victorian design features. Within the park is the David Welch Winter Gardens, one of Europe’s largest indoor gardens. It houses many exotic plants, including the largest collection of cacti in Britain and the world’s only talking cactus.

This award winning museum houses a unique collection covering shipbuilding, fishing, port history and charts the rise of the oil & gas industry in the North East. It also offers one of the best views over the busy harbour.

Basics of the Game

Water Polo in Scotland

The game is four quarters of eight minutes. Each team has six field players and a goal keeper and six substitutes. All the players, except the goal keeper, move up and down the pool playing both offense and defence similar to basketball.

However, unlike basketball, if a player is holding the ball a defender can do nearly anything to them, including pushing them underwater. The referee’s job is very difficult because not only must they observe from the side deck of the pool, but they cannot see what the players are doing underwater.

Games are fast paced and teams often combine to score 15—30 goals per game.

There are currently 18 Clubs and seven Universities that play in Scotland, and the sport is growing quickly. There is also a small-sided game called ‘5-a-sides’ that is often played to adapt to the smaller and narrower Victorian Pools of Scotland.

Water Polo as a National Sport

Bleacherreport.com just rated Water Polo the world’s toughest sport over Australian Rules Football, Boxing and Rugby, because not only is it a highly physical contact sport demanding incredible stamina, but also ‘the game itself is supplemented by the need to not drown during it.’

Water Polo is hugely popular in Eastern European Countries and along the Mediterranean and is often considered a national sport in countries such as Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro and Malta.

About Scottish Water Polo

Players Scottish Water Polo is enjoying a period of significant growth and development.

Since the last Commonwealth Water Polo Championships in 2006, registered membership numbers have grown from 160 to nearly 600. Our domestic calendar has grown with over 200 games per year now being played as well as three teams competing in the British Water Polo League. We have also focussed on the introduction to Water Polo through Mini Polo in schools. Last year our annual Schools Championships had over 200 children competing.

To accommodate our growth, we have secured increased access to deep-water pools for weekly training and competition, as well as our Scottish Development Squad.

We are working with Aberdeen Sports Village and Tollcross International Swimming Centre to secure more Water Polo time as these pools become available.

Our National Squad training and competition opportunities have also increased significantly. We have monthly training sessions and at least two international competitions for each squad; Senior Squads will have three or four international competitions each this year.

We have always had a dual aim in hosting the Commonwealth Water Polo Championships; firstly to deliver a fantastic event for the players and nations involved; secondly to use the Championships to raise the profile of Water Polo in Scotland and accelerate the development of the sport, attracting new players, establishing new clubs and strengthening existing ones. As a result of the Championships we have been able to secure additional funding to help support this development in Aberdeen and Grampian. We are continuing to explore other options to access more money to support the development across all parts of Scotland.

The growth and development of the sport has been supported by the employment of a Water Polo Development Officer, Neal Rayner, who has worked with the volunteers and Clubs to develop the infrastructure which allows growth. As this work develops further we are increasingly working with the different staff and teams within Scottish Swimming, including the Regional Swimming Development Managers, who are supporting clubs with their needs around increased water time, links with swimming clubs and general club development through poloMark.
