PRESIDENT’S REPORT JANUARY 2019 As I mentioned in my last annual report, the challenges for Scottish cultural organizations continue with older demographics and diminishing energy of our community’s leadership group. I wish to reiterate that we must continue to encourage the younger members of our families to participate and grow into these roles over time.

New Scottish-related events have started in Sydney and in the Lismore region of NSW. Mr John Tozeland, Lismore, is developing a proposal for Scottish events in that region. The Scots College, Sydney, in association with Pipe Bands Australia (NSW) is restarting the only highland gathering in the greater Sydney area. Check out our website calendar for more information.

Recent feedback from new members shows that there is recognition that our culture and heritage is worthy of being supported and enjoyed. As you know, there is much debate about the Australian character by politicians. They need not look too far from our Scottish roots for inspiration. It can be said that our Scottishness has shaped much about our modern Australian ethos and these lessons can provide inspiration for the future of our great Australian nation.

Scottish Week will be held from 14 June to 18 June 2019. We are privileged to have Dr Joseph Morrow, CBE, QC, LLD, The Right Honourable Lord Lyon, as our Honoured Guest.

The Office of Lyon King of Arms in Scotland dates from the 14th century and, as such, has responsibility over all heraldic business in Scotland. It is a unique Court dealing with the laws of heraldry and is part of the law of Scotland. We look forward to welcoming Dr Morrow to Australia and his talks on a range of interesting topics.

We benefit from exploring different aspects of our Scottish heritage and culture during Scottish Week meaning that each year is different, while enjoying some of the traditional events. We welcome and thank our presenters providing their time and expertise for our enjoyment and learning.

You will know by now that the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo (REMT) will be in Sydney from 17 to 19 October 2019. Brigadier Allfrey, REMT Chief Executive, has asked the Council to assist with arrangements for the performances in Sydney. At the REMT 2017 in Edinburgh, the clans were involved in a special opening ceremony. We will be inviting clans to be involved in a similar way in Sydney. Prepare your clan folk to be involved in this exciting iconic event.

The Committee has endorsed a new role of Media Production for the Council to help to record events and produce material to promote our culture and heritage. We are delighted that Mr Stephen Hope, Commissioner of Clan Hope of Craighall in Australia, has agreed to undertake this role. We welcome Stephen to our team.

ROYAL EDINBURGH MILITARY TATTOO IN AUSTRALIA SAVE THE DATE – 17 TO 19 OCTOBER 2019 The acclaimed international spectacular, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is coming to Sydney, the ANZ Stadium, from 17 to 19 October 2019.

In 2017, the clans were involved in taking the salute at the start of each performances at Edinburgh Castle. It was a thrilling occasion. We are planning to do this for the Sydney performances. The SAHC is considering arranging a group on one night for all those clans that do not have an organized group in Australia.

THE 8/9TH BATTALION, ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REGIMENT (RAR) PIPE BAND DONS THE MACARTHUR TARTAN TO PLAY AT THE REGIMENT’S 70TH ANNIVERSARY CEREMONY

In 2015 Doug & Karen Manger of St Kilda Retail in Brisbane were commissioned to make kilts in the MacArthur Modern tartan for the regiment’s pipe band. Pipers and Drummers of the RAR are made up of Riflemen who cross train in Pipes and Drums.

On 23rd November 2018, the unit including the band attended the 70th Anniversary of the RAR lead by their Commanding Officer, Colonel J.A. Hammett, at the Australian War Memorial Canberra, ACT. The anniversary of the raising of the Australian Army’s Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) was marked with a ceremonial parade piped in by the band (photo above). The Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, His Excellency General the the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove, AK, MC (Retd), who was himself at one time an RAR soldier, addressed the parade.

The RAR, originally consisting of three ‘regular’ infantry battalions – the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalions – was raised in 1948 for service in Japan after World War Two. There are now seven RAR battalions, based in Adelaide, Brisbane, Townsville and Darwin. The 8th/9th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (8/9 RAR), was originally formed in 1973 by linking together both the 8th and 9th Battalions of the Royal Australian Regiment. Over the next 24 years, 8/9 RAR remained on the Australian order of battle, based at Enoggera Barracks in Brisbane, Queensland, until it was disbanded in 1997 amid a number of Defence-wide cutbacks introduced by the Howard government.

In 2006, it was announced that 8/9 RAR would be re-raised as part of a plan to expand the size of the Army. Since then it has established itself as a fully deployable infantry battalion as part of 7th Brigade.

8/9 RAR has since contributed personnel on operations to Timor-Leste (East Timor), Afghanistan, Solomon Islands, as well as civil community operations such as Pakistan Assist and the 2010-11 Queensland floods. Its motto is ‘Duty First’.

The battalion has as its mascot a merino ram named John MacArthur. The name was picked because John Macarthur was described as the more colourful figure in the Australian Merino sheep industry, even though described in some quarters as “somewhat of a scoundrel". The words proved to be very apt because the mascots have proved to be more than colourful and there have been some scoundrels amongst them. In fact there have been 7 “Cpl John MacArthurs” (all later promoted over the years) and nicknamed in the army tradition as “Stan”. The first Stan was enlisted on 18th February 1971. The current “Stan” is (officially) John Macarthur VII. Carol McArthur 6

NEW UPPER HUNTER DISTRICT TARTAN CONFIRMED President of the Aberdeen Highland Games, Charles Cooke, has advised that registration of the Upper Hunter Tartan by the Tartan Register of Scotland as No. 121320 in the Register was made on 5th December 2018.

As an acknowledgement of the early association with Aberdeen of the retail firm M. Campbell & Co, the design is based on the Campbell of Bredalbane.

Hunter Valley district products are referenced in the colours: green for the Hunter lucerne flats, blue for the waters of the rivers, white for the dairy industry’s milk and cream production, black for the local coal seams, purple for the famous Hunter Valley viticulture and yellow for both the spectacular canola crops and the golden wool clips.

A red thread acknowledges the local Light Horsemen and their contribution to the World War I victory in Europe.

CELEBRATION OF ST ANDREW’S DAY IN SYDNEY Reviving the Scottish Australian Heritage Council’s participation in the annual St Andrew’s Day service at St Stephen’s Church, Macquarie Street, a representative group of members attended the 2018 service on the nearest Sunday, 25th November.

A stirring street prelude by SAHC piper Sam Young and a stimulating sermon by Ex-Moderator Rev. Dr Fullarton attracted much interest and attention.

ATTENTION ALL GENEALOGISTS AND CLAN HISTORIANS This year, Graeme Mackenzie, Scottish historian & genealogist, and Chairman of the Association of Highland Clans & Societies in Scotland, will tour New Zealand and Australia.

The mission statement of the Association is to help the descendants of Scots around the world discover their roots in the Highlands by researching their ancestors for them, or teaching them how to do it for themselves.

Though this was the original aim of the Association, its activities have since broadened into all geographical areas of Scotland.

CORRECTION AND APOLOGY In the last newsletter, a report from Clan Lindsay was misquoted with reference to the second daughter of the clan Chief, the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres. The correct description is Lady Iona Mackworth-Young.

The editor apologises for this error, to both Lady Iona and the Australian High Commissioner for Clan Lindsay, Susan Cooke, who swiftly pointed out the mistake.

CLAN NEWS The Clan MacRae Society of Australia and New Zealand plan to hold their Annual General Meeting on Saturday 16th February at the Katoomba Family Hotel, 15 Parke Street, Katoomba NSW starting at 2pm, with an informal luncheon beforehand at 12.30pm.

The Clan Douglas Society of Australia: Welcome to the second number of the revised Clan Douglas newsletter, with information about their Annual Gathering which was held in Canberra on 8th December at the Canberra Burns Club.

The Clan Sutherland Society Australia Inc: The Sutherlands are planning a special dinner in association with the 2019 Australian Celtic Festival in Glen Innes NSW, and their Annual General Meeting during the Bundanoon Highland Games on 6th April.

The Clan Davidson Society in Australia Inc is also planning to hold its Annual General Meeting during a popular Scottish event, the Bonnie Wingham Festival on the NSW lower north coast, at Wingham Services Club on Saturday 1st June GREAT HIGHLAND GATHERING INITIATIVES John Tozeland, a descendant of pioneering Murray and Thorburn families, launched the Lismore Heritage Network on the NSW north coast on 30th November. The aim of the Network is to connect the Scottish cultural community in the Richmond River valley and to work towards the re-establishment of a Highland Gathering in the city of Lismore.
