MARKET UPDATE As the conflict in Ukraine continues, we’re managing the volatile timber market conditions to ensure robust security of supply for our customers’ pallets. As a result, we’re well-stocked across all key timber sizes and pallet nails. Only time will tell whether the Ukraine conflict creates further impact, but challenging conditions prevail in the domestic market and timber prices remain at levels not witnessed for many years. TAKING CONTROL OF INVENTORY MANAGEMENT AT MITSUBISHI Working in partnership with Mitsubishi Electric to help save costs and reduce wastage on PPE and consumables, Scott Direct has installed six new Inventor-e industrial vending machines at Mitsubishi’s air conditioning manufacturing facilities in Livingston. The new iVendScale Plus vending machines will each be kept stocked with a bespoke range of PPE-related products, including specialist gloves, eye-protectiion and high-vis items. The full range of PPE is supplied and re-stocked by Scott Direct. Alasdair McColl at Scott Direct said: “We were tasked with several key objectives for this project; to save costs by reducing unnecessary or careless consumption of PPE and consumables; providing 24-hour access to supplies, as well as reducing the time and cost associated with processing, storage and distribution and improving the overall customer experience. “Our automated and accountable vending solution is already proving highly successful – producing less wastage, driving efficiency and saving money.” Paul Rudden, Stores Section Manager at Mitsubishi Electric, added: “We’ve already seen an 18% reduction in employee spend, saving more than £5 per employee per month since the vending machines have been introduced. Cumulatively across the six machines, that’s a saving of almost £50,000 per year.”

Getting to know Michael Morse JOB TITLE: BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT EXECUTIVE – SCOTT PALLETS RECOVERY TIME WITH THE BUSINESS 3 months.

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY

Meeting and engaging with house builders at construction sites and promoting sustainability through our pallet recovery service. I recently completed the CITB Manager & Professionals course and CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) training, so I can now visit all building sites across the UK. 2 PLATFORM || SCOTT GROUP

Inventor-e’s iVendScale Plus machine was selected for this installation. It is a scale-based inventory management vending system providing secure access and dispensing of products. The system logs inventory data collected via the scales as products are dispensed. Dean Henry, CEO at Inventor-e, said, “Our industrial vending solutions put the correct item in the right place at the right time. Ensuring optimum productivity while preventing work stoppages and controlling costs. “The cloud-based inventory management software, Sourcerer, enables customers to effectively manage and control usage of material across all Inventor-e solutions and can also be used in mobile and storeroom environments with the SmartStores app, as well as vending solutions, providing real-time company-wide visibility and control of materials.”

BACKGROUND EXPERIENCE

I spent more than 30 years in the international upstream oil and gas industry. Working in both operational and business development roles selling drilling products and services and ensuring the right people and equipment were in the right place at the right time. Along the way, I learned a few languages, including French, Afrikaans and Pigdin!

CURRENT CHALLENGES

Working with the construction industry to challenge the approach of disposing of used pallets to help achieve the long-term objective of zero waste. We’re working hard to provide guidance and education on sustainability and targeting site managers to raise awareness of the Scott Pallets recovery service to ensure environmental compliance and the cost-effective removal of used pallets for reuse.

FAVOURITE PART OF THE JOB

Being part of the team delivering outstanding pallet collection results for our customers. For example, following a proactive campaign with a house builder, with strong support from the senior management, we’ve managed to increase pallet return rates from 18% to 86%. Seeing the huge business and environmental impact we can make is really satisfying. Together, we deliver more.

SERVING LOCAL INDUSTRY NATIONWIDE

Going green in construction Every year, the construction industry uses around 20 million single-use timber pallets, but less than 10% are reused. The vast majority will be skipped, chipped or shredded. This must change. We’ve always been at the forefront of innovation, with our service experiencing significant growth in recent years as environmental priorities continue to climb everyone’s agenda. Our mission to transform the way building materials move throughout the construction industry is building momentum, and our recent introduction of The Pallet LOOP to complement our existing recovery service is enabling us to create a transformational, net carbon zero, deposit-based reuse scheme specifically for the UK construction sector. The Pallet LOOP is a circular economy pallet reuse scheme that’s different by design. It delivers an alternative approach to single-use pallets that’s better for business and the planet. Incentivising pallet returns via a cost-effective, easy-to-use, deposit-based system; we provide the construction industry with a simple, circular approach to pallet use that’s greener, leaner, stronger and safer - actively eliminating avoidable pallet waste from the building materials supply chain.

David Mercer, Operations Director – Recovery, Scott Pallets, said: “This new service is a complete game-changer for the industry. By manufacturing stronger pallets designed to last multiple trips, we can completely replace single-trip, white wood pallets. We’re helping customers reach their net-zero goals by creating a pool of green pallets that can be tracked on their journey from start to finish, collected, repaired and returned to the pool for reuse, again and again.” The recovery service has recently extended its network of repair sites and appointed Michael Morse, Business Development Executive, to help drive customer service levels nationally. There are already five UK pallet sites operating as collection points and repair hubs to facilitate the LOOP service, with four more being added by the end of the year and a further ten sites next year. The service has the capabilities and infrastructure to expand internationally, which is a really exciting concept.
