Those who write the seasonal script have big ideas, which is music to the ears of Blue Jays’ fans ready to watch a thriller. Another offensive-heavy campaign laden with stars appears to be in the works, after the Blue Jays pounded out an MLB leading 262 home runs last season. Last year’s tough onegame postseason miss blended with another nomadic disadvantage, leaving a chip on the shoulders of batting artists. General manager Ross Atkins has done progressive work building one of the best looking teams on paper with steady moves in time, drawing Toronto back into a legitimate contender.

In the offseason the club ensured to be active. The early inking of starter Kevin Gausman for five years and adding reliever Yimi García to two years proved the Blue Jays were ready to jump to a new level. As training ramped up in spring the Blue Jays landed All-Star pitcher Yusei Kikuchi via free agency and made a five-player trade with Oakland to bring in Gold Glove third baseman Matt Chapman.

Not to be forgotten was the sevenyear extension of starter José Berríos, who came over in a trade with Minnesota last season. Marry that with what lefty Hyun Jun Ryu can do and the emergence of Alek Manoah, and the starting rotation appears as strong as ever.

The club also tapped the international prospect pool by signing 21 young players, highlighted by catcher Luis Meza, early in the New Year. The 17-year-old ranks 33rd on MLB.com’s Top 50 International Prospects List, and comes from the KPL Academy in his native Venezuela. What we see here is a new wave of talent starting to role into the organization.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette have clearly proven they’ve arrived. Taking a step back and seeing the big picture over the last few years with key veteran additions like George Springer, shows a great blueprint by the brass since 2015. As a result, Toronto is set to be thrilled once again.

“What we did last year was the trailer,” Vladimir Guerrero said during Spring Training. “Now you guys are going to see the movie.”

CHARLIE DIGS DEEPER INTO FRANCHISE HISTORY Stepping into the dugout this season, Charlie Montoyo will join Bobby Cox, Cito Gaston, John Gibbons and Jimy Williams as the fifth manager to see at least the start of four seasons as club manager. He also enters a win away from tying Carlos Tosca for fifth all-time in franchise wins (191). As expectations grow for the Blue Jays, all eyes will steer towards Charlie’s decisions on a daily basis.

TURNING A NEGATIVE INTO A POSITIVE The Blue Jays started the 2021 season playing out of Dunedin and Buffalo before finally arriving back at Rogers Centre on July 30th. Now they’ll take advantage of playing all 81 home games at Rogers Centre, regaining some welcomed consistency. The Blue Jays really rallied once back in their own digs for the first time since 2019, going 25-11 with a .694 win percentage.

THERE COULD BE MORE IN STORE FROM THE YOUNG CORE The Blue Jays impressive hitting highlights in 2021 included a franchise record 262 bombs to lead the majors. Powering the way, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. matched Salvador Perez (Kansas City) for the Major League lead in home runs (48). He also joined Bo Bichette among the top-three across MLB with a combined 379 hits, which saw Bichette knocking in an AL-best 191. There could be even more in store for this pair among Toronto’s dynamic core at the plate in 2022.

A SHOT TO THE ARMS Before the MLB lockout the Blue Jays quickly made moves to sign free agent pitchers Kevin Gausman and Yimi García. Gausman comes off his first All-Star season, pitching a 2.81 ERA through an NL high 33 starts for the Giants. While Garcia recorded 15 saves for the Marlins prior to being traded to Houston, finishing with a collective 4.21 ERA in 62 appearances. They’ll respectively add a nice shot in the arm to the pitching staff along with Yusei Kikuchi, who joins the starting rotation from Seattle.

HEALTHLY PRODUCTION FOR GEORGE SPRINGER George Springer showed what he could do when in the lineup in 2021. However, combating injuries made things difficult for the three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger. Despite playing just 78 games last season, the outfielder still battled his way to 79 hits, 22 home runs, batting .264/.555/.907. Let’s see what a better bill of health can bring.

POSTSEASON AMBITIONS ALWAYS IN PLAY NOW In the depths of a 162-game season one shouldn’t look too far into the future. However, having just missed the 2021 postseason, the Blue Jays have the experience that leaves a team hungry. They’re also on the rise in a division that might not compete at the same level this time around.

IS ANOTHER 90-PLUS WINS IN THE CARDS AGAIN?

Last season the Blue Jays battled their way in the tough American League East to 91 wins. The feat marked the first time since 2015 that the club reached 90 wins or higher. Now there might be more in store.

DOES SOMEONE EMERGE AS THE CONSISTENT CATCHER? Catching duties the last few seasons have been based on a number of variables. In 2021 Reese McGuire actually saw the most games in action, while Danny Jansen battled some injury issues but drummed up some hot stretches at the plate. Meanwhile, Alejandro Kirk continues to show off his natural bat and at just 23-years-old continues to develop into an intriguing piece. There’s also top prospect Gabriel Moreno who could soon be on the way up to the big leagues with some Triple-A seasoning.

WHERE DOES NATE PEARSON LAND? Nate Pearson is a young player with a big arm but a groin injury created a bump in the road for a pitcher deemed ace potential. The 2022 slate could be a big rebound year for the 25-year-old, who appeared in 15 innings last season. Whether it’s out of the bullpen or as an eventual starter, fans are ready to see more 100 mph fastballs from this young man.

With the quick addition of Yusei Kikuchi as Spring Training ramped up, the Blue Jays now have the flexibility to stretch Pearson out a little longer.

HOW BERRíOS SETTLES IN COULD BE HUGE FOR TORONTO’S ROTATION Landing with the club via a midseason trade with Minnesota, José Berríos needed a little time to find his footing. But when he did, out came some gem starts.

Now locked up long-term, the two-time All-Star is in the prime of his career (at 27) and will be a huge factor in the club’s starting rotation success. The pitching additions should help Berríos breathe a little easier at the front end of the rotation.

DON’T SLEEP ON A BOUNCE BACK FROM BIGGIO The 2021 season was a tough one for Cavan Biggio. A multidimensional talent, he battled the injury bug and appeared in just 79 games. A fresh season equals new opportunity for both player and team alike. Turning 27 this year, it could be of benefit to all for Biggio to be handed the keys to a specific position on the diamond.

With Matt Chapman now at third base, Biggio can focus on second or even a spot in the outfield depending on how things unfold early on. There could be a bounce back in the works not to sleep on.

TEOSCAR COULD TAKE ANOTHER STEP Receiving an All-Star honour for the first time in his career, Teoscar Hernández ranked third in the Majors with 116 RBI and seventh in the American League with a career-high .296 batting average last season. Also setting personal bests in runs (92), hits (163), OBP (.346), home runs (32) and RBI (116), the two-time Sliver Slugger could be primed for another big step forward at 29.

Producing a career-high 23 saves last season, he tied Ken Giles for the highest save percentage (95.8) in franchise history and notched the highest in the American League when the 2021 dust settled. Now we’ll see how the Canadian can top a banner year and if the Blue Jays can build some support around him in the bullpen.

HOW THE BIG ROOKIE HOLDS UP IN HIS FIRST FULL MLB SEASON After making his Major League debut on May 27th of last season at Yankee Stadium, Alek Manoah went on to tie Aaron Sanchez for the second lowest ERA by a rookie in club history (3.22). Receiving 20 starts last season, now the expectation to contribute within the starting rotation just got higher. All hopes are that Manoah can keep the progression rolling fast at just 24-years-old.

HOT CORNER SECURED On March 16th the Blue Jays landed a gem defender in three-time Gold Glove recipient Matt Chapman from the A’s. While the 2019 All-Star secures third base for Toronto, Cavan Biggio and Santiago Espinal can now add more reassurance around the diamond. Meanwhile, prospects Jordan Groshans and Orelvis Martinez continue to gain traction on their rising careers.

The roster is fluid for the Blue Jays but in mint shape as the team takes an exciting tone to flight in 2022 and beyond.l

The Path For Women Around MLB Begins To Widen

This season hitting coach Jaime Vieira makes history within the Toronto Blue Jays organization, becoming the first female to receive a coaching position. The Georgetown, Ontario native previously worked within the club’s baseball operations department, as a research and development intern.

She also served the JAIME VIEIRA Jays Care Foundation, as a programs specialist and coordinator.

The path to pros hasn’t been easy for the woman who started playing softball at a young age with the Halton Hills Hawks rep program. Dealing with scoliosis, she got back on the ball field to eventually play for the University of Guelph-Humber and later moved into a coaching role. Obtaining a Masters of Science degree from York University along the way, all the hard work is paying dividends while she organically paves the way for other Canadian women to follow and grow around her.

Rare have women been at the

forefront of visibility in baseball, a game steeped in male centric tradition. While women like former umpire Pam Postema and late Toronto journalist Alison Gordon were among those to break barriers around the game, a new level of organizational awareness seems to be moving the needle slightly towards greater equal opportunity (with a long way still to go). In recent years, even months, women are appearing to pop up in the tough to crack player personnel side of the game and beyond. Examples of coaches, scouts and those in executive offices are carving out new-look spaces with their sheer determination and passion. Women are also proving equally qualified as general managers, managers, broadcasters, etc.

The following is a snapshot of just some of the women to recently forge a stronger path towards greater visible equality around the game.

RACHEL BALKOVEC New York Yankees

RACHEL BALKOVEC New York Yankees A keen knowledge for hitting and two degrees in the science of human movement has blended with Rachel Balkovec’s rounded organizational experience, making her a rising star in the professional baseball ranks. The first full-time female hitting coach within a Major League organization, Balkovec’s 2019 hiring by the New York Yankees turned into a quick internal ascent. Now she becomes the first female manager in the Minor Leagues, guiding the Low-A Tampa Tarpons. Balkovec initially began as a part-time strength and conditioning coach in the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 2012, moving to become the first women at the Minor League level to be a full-time strength and conditioning coordinator in 2014. A former collegiate softball player, she landed within the Houston Astros Minor League system as a Latin American strength and conditioning coach in 2016 and eventually over to the Yankees.

CAITLYN CALLAHAN Pittsburgh Pirates After serving as the Reds Minor League video and technology intern the past two seasons, Caitlyn Callahan now moves into a new role in Pittsburgh. The former Boston University softball player will wear a uniform with the Pirates organization as development coach in 2022.

JASMINE DUNSTON Chicago White Sox The daughter of former Major Leaguer Shawon Dunston, Jasmine Dunston joins the Chicago White Sox for the 2022 season, as director of Minor

League operations. She previously served the Cincinnati Reds as a specialist, player development in 2021.

RACHEL FOLDEN Chicago Cubs Following her softball career at Marshall, Rachel Folden played in the National Pro Fastpitch league from 2008-12. From there she landed at Valparaiso University as an assistant coach (2009-10).

Establishing the Folden Fastpitch Company in 2010, she’s focused on the data of baseball and softball instruction.

Now as a Minor League hitting coach for the Chicago Cubs, Folden has proven to never give up on her true love of baseball, even if she was pushed towards softball at an early age.

JILLIAN GEIB Colorado Rockies MLB datacaster Jillian Geib was a schoolteacher when she served as the first female official scorer for a Colorado Rockies game in 2021. She’s believed to be the fourth female to do so in MLB history.

KATIE KRALL Boston Red Sox In January the Red Sox hired Katie Krall as a player development coach for Double-A Portland. As a result, Boston becomes the first organization with two female coaches, joining Bianca Smith in the Red Sox system.

CHANDRA LAWDERMILK Tampa Bay Rays Last December the Rays promoted Chandra Lawdermilk to the role of vice president of baseball operations. Prior to becoming the first female to hold a VP title in the club’s baseball operations department, Lawdermilk served as director of staff development and recruiting.

ANGIE MENTINK Seattle Mariners The Mariners added talent last August, when Angie Mentink became the first women to handle colour commentary in Mariners history. Mentink is also a breast cancer survivor and an advocate for early detection.

BETH MOWINS Chicago Cubs In 2021 Beth Mowins became the first women to call play-by-play for the Chicago Cubs during a regular season game. She’s been in the sports industry since 1994, working at ESPN and CBS. Among the many sports she’s been in the booth for throughout her career includes becoming the first woman to call a nationally televised NFL game in 2017.

SARA GOODRUM Houston Astros Former Oregon Ducks softball player Sara Goodrum took her game to new heights, following four years in the Milwaukee Brewers sports science department. Last season she moved roles to become the first Minor League hitting coordinator in Brewers and baseball history, overseeing the club’s entire hitting department. Goodrum would move to Houston heading into the 2022 season, becoming the Astros director of player development.

CATIE GRIGGS Seattle Mariners Last August Catie Griggs arrived in Seattle as the Mariners new president of business operations. Prior to that she served as chief business officer for Atlanta United of Major League Soccer.

Maryland native joined the O’s after a lengthy stint with the Houston Astros, where she had worked since 2015 and rose to become manager of international scouting.

KIM NG Miami Marlins

ALYSSA NAKKEN San Francisco Giants Alyssa Nakken started as an intern for the San Francisco Giants back in 2014. Moving up the internal ranks, by 2020 she became the first full-time female assistant coach in MLB history. On July 20, 2020 Nakken was posted at first base in a game against the Oakland A’s, becoming the first women to coach on the field of play during an exhibition game.

KIM NG Miami Marlins Graduating from the University of Chicago, Kim Ng first broke onto the baseball scene as an intern with the Chicago White Sox back in 1990 and rose to become director of baseball operations. In 2020 Ng didn’t just become MLB’s first female general manager when she stepped into the Miami Marlins role, she was the second person of Asian decent to lead a franchise. With over 30 years of MLB experience, Ng has been involved in front offices that have spanned the White Sox (1990-96), American League Office (1997), Yankees (1998-2001), Dodgers (2002-11) and senior vice president of Baseball Operations for MLB (2011-20).

EVE ROSENBAUM Baltimore Orioles Eva Rosenbaum became the director of baseball development for the Baltimore Orioles in 2019. The Harvard grad and

AMELIA SCHIMMEL Oakland A’s A’s history was made in the announcer’s booth last season, with Oakland native Amelia Schimmel earning the spot as public address announcer for all home games at Oakland Coliseum. The first female PA announcer in franchise history, she succeeded Dick Callahan who passed away following 15 years in the role.

Schimmel first joined the organization in 2017, previously working as a producer of game entertainment and video content. She earned six Emmy Awards as a producer and editor throughout eight years with the MLB Network.

BIANCA SMITH Boston Red Sox The first African American woman to serve as a coach in professional baseball, Bianca Smith’s trailblazing path took her to the Boston Red Sox Minor League system in January of 2021. Now the former Dartmouth College softball player knows every day is an opportunity to inspire others to dig deep and chase their Major League dream. Smith leaped to the pros from Carroll University, where she was an assistant coach and hitting coordinator

since 2019. Prior to that she worked at Case Western Reserve University as director of baseball operations (2013-17), later moving to the University of Dallas as an assistant coach in 2018. There were also internships along the way that gave her a feel for the MLB game, serving in the baseball operations departments of the Texas Rangers and the Cincinnati Reds.

According to the Institute of Diversity and Ethics in Sport, the 2021 season saw 22 women possess on-field coaching and player development roles throughout MLB organizations, while 14 held chief titles. There were also 86 women that accounted for team executive vice president, senior vice president/vice president positions. As baseball continues to shift towards a stronger opportunistic future for women, resources and supports need to ensure proper development and sustainability. Women not only need a new level of opportunity but a strengthening voice in the success and growth of MLB’s future.l

Through the first two months of the 2021 double-A season, catching prospect Gabriel Moreno stomped through the Northeast League. The 22-year-old from Barquisimeto, Venezuela batted .373/.441/.651 with 47 hits and 45 RBIs in 32 games, prompting the Toronto Blue Jays to wonder if the Northeast League was going to find a way to slow him down.

They never got to find out as a fractured left thumb Moreno suffered June 25th sidelined him until the New Hampshire Fisher Cats were done for the year. He appeared in three games for Triple-A Buffalo upon his return and then resumed raking in the Arizona Fall League, where he consistently turned heads while posting a .904 OPS in 22 games, and then appeared in 18 games with the Cardenales de Lara in the Venezuelan Winter League, where he put up a .758 OPS. So as he heads into 2022, Moreno is firmly entrenched as one of the top prospects in all

of baseball, sitting seventh in Baseball America’s pre-season top-100 rankings. And given the expectation that he opens this year at Triple-A, he could quickly force himself into call-up discussions with a strong start in Buffalo.

In that way Moreno will be one of the most intriguing Blue Jays prospects this year, although crucially for the club, far from the only one in a farm system still strong even after supplying much of the current big-league core. Right-hander Nate Pearson still has prospect status and he’ll have the opportunity to play a significant role on the bigleague pitching staff, be it as a starter or reliever.

Orelvis Martinez, the dynamic 20-year-old infielder who hit 28 homers between Low-A Dunedin and High-A Vancouver, has an advanced bat and is making quick gains. Jordan Groshans, the 12th overall pick in 2018, posted an .817 OPS in 75 games at New Hampshire and could also rise rapidly.

All are part of a secondary wave of young talent that will help supplement the current big-league group now or down the road.

JORDAN GROSHANS, SS/3B The 22-year-old looked to be in the fast lane when he opened up the 2019 season with an OPS of .909 through his first 23 games but a foot injury sidelined him the rest of that year. The pandemic hit in 2020 and he finally got back to work last year at Double-A, posting a solid .291/.367/.450 batting line in 316 plate appearances. The 75 games he played was more than the 71 he’d logged in total since signing in 2018 and he’ll look to continue the progress this year.

NATE PEARSON, RHP Slowed by groin injuries during spring training and the early parts of the season, Pearson’s problems were eventually found to be rooted in a sports hernia that was surgically repaired over the winter. Assuming health, the 25-year-old will only be hampered by the lack of innings logged in recent seasons

which could lead to some creative usage scenarios. The Blue Jays’ goal remains for him to start but in flashes during a September callup he showed the potential to be a weapon out of the bullpen, as well. Need and opportunity will likely dictate his path, although he can force the issue by dominating to his ability.

ORELVIS MARTINEZ, SS Beyond the power he showed last year, Martinez also left player development staff marvelled at his ability to consistently barrel up baseballs. That gives him the chance to become a complete hitter, rather than a one-dimensional homer threat.

Though he may eventually outgrow shortstop, the Blue Jays believe he’ll be able to shift over to third base without issue and no matter where he ends up, the bat should be alive.

NATE PEARSON

OTTO LOPEZ, INF/OF The versatile speedster can do a little bit of everything and a strong 2021 split between New Hampshire and Buffalo helped earn him a brief stint in the majors. He’ll be on the radar in the event of injuries this year.

THOMAS HATCH, RHP An elbow injury in the spring submarined his season and limited him to just three games, two starts, in the majors after becoming a key relief arm in 2020. The Blue Jays are still hopeful he’ll remain a starter and will be a part of the 2022 staff one way or another.

ANTHONY KAY, LHP The 26-year-old flashes swing-and-miss stuff, he struck out 39 in 33.2 big-league innings last year, but command remains an issue as he also walked 18 batters. He’s been used both as a starter and a reliever and provides an option for both roles this year.

IT SEEMS CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS are built differently year after year, but the chase is always on to mimic some building blocks to how a ball club last won a title.

Pro sports, after all, is the snapshot for a copycat existence. And perhaps what stood out most from Atlanta’s run to winning the World Series last year is just how much their roster evolved throughout the season.

The group that reported to camp in February was so remarkably different by the time October rolled around.

By the playoff push, Brian Snitker had himself an altogether retooled outfield – four new players brought in by the trade deadline in late July. Enter ‘Joctober,’ the out-ofnowhere explosion from Eddie Rosario in the NLCS, and then Jorge Soler’s rocket launcher in Game 6 against Houston that made Atlanta champions.

Which brings us to 2022. As spring training, at last, opens across baseball, remember that any club considering itself in the playoff conversation – or may emerge as an under-the-radar threat come summer – could very well have different star power when pennant races begin around the game.

So, when making your preseason prognostication, keep an eye on what veteran players are on expiring deals, or even have a year remaining on their contracts. Those could be the guys on the move as hired guns to get a ball club into contender status by fall.

Organizations just saw the blueprint of how a World Series can be won. Which makes you wonder if other front offices will want to pull the trigger on a move, even before the all-star break, to get a head start on a real move toward the postseason.

Consider what could be dangling for a winning team if it suddenly runs into injuries or feels is an upgrade or two away from a deep run: If the Mets continue being the Mets, remember Jacob DeGrom can opt-out of his contract; Should you be a club needing a championship pedigree rotation arm, Justin

Verlander has a player option for 2023.

A bullpen needing a boost may look to the Bronx. Should the Yankees stumble as expected, Aroldis Chapman is a pending free agent and can still throw smoke. Looking for a big bat? A certain Aaron Judge is a pending free agent, as is World Series champion Trea Turner, who could bat leadoff or seamlessly slide into just about any spot in a lineup.

And while it seems farfetched that Tampa won’t be in the hunt for trip to the tournament, Kevin Kiermaier could be an interesting chip. He is owed $13 million in 2023 before becoming eligible to hit the open market. Never say never, as the expression goes.

The A-listers may be aplenty when this year’s trade deadline rolls around.

And perhaps no July 31 will have as much intrigue as this one, because of the star power that could be available, and the impact the additions in Atlanta had in ending their championship drought.

WATCH OUT FOR: AMERICAN LEAGUE As the Blue Jays look to take the next step, back into the postseason picture, there will be no shortage of opponents to have on their radar.

BOSTON RED SOX On the surface, Boston didn’t appear to be a playoff contender going into last year, but there were the Red Sox sneaking in on the final day of the season; knocking off the Yankees in the Wildcard game and then upsetting AL East champion Tampa in the divisional series.

Alex Cora’s team was able to do it, despite a season where COVID ran rampant through the clubhouse, not to mention the ace of their rotation missing most of it. Then Chris Sale returned in mid-August and in nine outings, did a lot of Chris Sale kind of things. J.D. Martinez is still there, Jackie Bradley Jr. remains, Alex Verdugo took a step forward. Any kind of conversation around AL contenders requires the outfit at Fenway Park.

Last September, on the night Tampa became the first team in baseball to punch its ticket into the postseason, most of the players and coaches didn’t even know they were in a win-and-you clinch situation. Reaching the playoffs for a third straight year was another day at the office, a rite of passage into autumn at The Trop.

NATIONAL LEAGUE ATLANTA BRAVES You have to include the defending champs, who may actually be stronger on paper in 2022. Ronald Acuña Jr. has looked terrific in hitting drills as he comes back from ACL surgery in his right knee; Calgary’s Mike Soroka, coming off a second torn Achilles, could give the starting rotation a real boost in July should injury rehab go well. And much of the nucleus remains intact from the group that made its title run last fall.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX There were serious expectations leading into last season on the South Side of Chicago, and the White Sox lived up to their end of the billing, winning the franchise’s first division title since 2008.

A pitching staff that had the most strikeouts and fewest earned runs allowed; four pitchers among the Top 11 in Cy Young balloting. To say nothing of those White Sox bats that were lethal from spring to fall.

There are whispers in Chicago of comparing Luis Robert to Mike Trout, which sounds outrageous until you saw the production, plate discipline, prodigious power and defence.

Then there was Yoán Moncada, who just put up the best WAR on the team from a position player, and captain Tim Anderson had a career year.

Put it all together and the 53-28 record the White Sox had at home was the best in the American League.

The adage in sports goes, walk-before-you-run to reach championship status. There is no team in the AL with more expectations than the Chicago White Sox.

TAMPA BAY RAYS There is no explanation anymore. It defies logic and sense that Tampa keeps doing this. Who is betting against them?

They let Blake Snell and Charlie Morton exit stage right after reaching the World Series in 2020, then won the division last year. From the unknowns to signing others that had been discarded from the waiver wire, it’s almost as if the Rays sprinkle magic fairy dust on players upon arrival and on they go and win.

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS It was a magical season along McCovey Cove. There were the 107 wins and for the final 125 days of the season, San Francisco had the best record in baseball.

Then the abrupt halt when it ended in an instant with a questionable strike three call, and Max Scherzer stomping in celebration for the Dodgers. The Giants found themselves an ace in Logan Webb, who grew up in the Bay Area, but it’s the other end of the battery that makes you wonder where things are headed. Buster Posey’s retirement leaves

a huge hole, and remains the biggest question mark of all, even more than the obvious: were the Giants a onehit wonder or truly legit?

THE QUESTION MARKS: LOS ANGELES DODGERS When Atlanta polished off the Dodgers swiftly in the NLCS, you had to wonder if that marked the end of an era at Chavez Ravine. That LA bunch looked, and played, like they were old and broken.

And have since dismantled some fixtures from an era that was punctuated with the 2020 World Series win. While Walker Buehler remains, there are holes all over a starting rotation that seemed patchwork by late last season; Corey Seager leaving for the riches in Texas is a big void; Justin Turner’s body gave out on him by the postseason. It’s hard to envision late October without the Dodgers, then again with this roster, it’s more difficult to imagine how LA makes a run.

and Garrett Cole fled to New York before that. A chunk of the household names remain: Altuve, Bregman, Gurriel and Brantley, among them.

But the Astros seem as if the team whose window closed on them after not being able to get over the hump in last year’s World Series.

As players scurried into Spring Training, the free agent and trade activity came in a flurry after the lockout. Among the highlights of all the action, the Blue Jays snagged Matt Chapman in a five-player trade to upgrade third base.

Meanwhile the Red Sox drew in Trevor Story. In the NL the Dodgers landed Freddie Freeman, while the Rockies signed Kris Bryant for a bit of a shocker. That was just the start of what’s expected to be an interesting season full of player movements.l

TAMPA BAY RAYS Over the years, the Blue Jays have had their fair share of rivalries. And while no opponent has reached the stature of Rougned Odor, the newest villain for Toronto may very well be one of the longest standing players in the American League East.

You probably wouldn’t have had Kevin Kiermaier emerge as the lead outlaw in Blue Jays circles, but that’s certainly the case after the incident at Tropicana Field that led to controversy, an ejection and questioning just how far the line of ‘if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying’ goes in the new world of baseball analytics.

Need a refresher? Here goes: It was the final road trip late in the 2021 season, where the Blue Jays were making a push for October and the Rays for another division title. In the opener of that set, Kiermaier blew through a stop sign at third base and promptly was gunned down by Teoscar Hernandez to end the inning. But during the collision at home plate, the call sheet inside

the wristband of Toronto catcher Alejandro Kirk fell onto the dirt, unbeknownst to the rookie who was headed for the visitors’ dugout.

Kiermaier, meanwhile, spotted the card, took a quick peek around and grabbed it, before heading over to his bench. It was the following inning when the Blue Jays realized what had happened, got irate when it wasn’t returned, and the next day Toronto’s staff saw what the rest of us did on video: Tampa’s captain was caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

The call sheet contains the strategy for how the Blue Jays would pitch to each Rays hitter – valuable information.

What followed in the final game of the series was Ryan Borucki hitting Kiermaier with a pitch and the benches clearing. Kiermaier afterwards called it

“a weak move,” and Borucki was slapped with a three-game suspension that got reduced on appeal.

Kevin Cash and Charlie Montoyo worked together on the Rays staff for years, and are good friends, but the entire episode created an interesting dynamic between the two.

As for Kiermaier, he explained it this way to me the day after he scooped up the card and handed it to one of Tampa’s staffers in their dugout.

“Everything was so quick and after I did it, I was like, ‘Dang, their scouting reports or whatever it was, was on the ground and I grabbed it.’ Like I said, it got to the point that I’m not going to return it or do that," he said. "It’s September, whatever. I didn’t know what was going on.”

But Kevin Kiermaier obviously did.

And now in a 2022 season where both clubs are vying for the playoffs, the temperature just went up on a rivalry where there already is plenty on the line.

SHOHEI OHTANI LOS ANGELES ANGELS In any other season, rare would it be for anyone to have had a better season than the one put together by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in 2021. Yet, the most valuable player award of the American League went elsewhere, unanimously no less.

And so, when the Blue Jays face the Angels, all eyes will be on the matchup between Guerrero and Shohei Ohtani, who collected all 30 first place votes in AL MVP voting last year.

July and Guerrero was effusive in his praise for Ohtani, referring to him as, “a great human being and great ball player.” It took it all for Ohtani to win MVP over Vlad – a starting pitcher who can throw 100, while also hitting 46 homers. He’s just as busy on non-start days.

In so many ways, this is what baseball needs: a pair of electrifying new-generation players who are true phenoms in the game. One on an East Coast team, the other in the West. One the son of a hall of famer, the other grew up idolizing Ichiro Suzuki; both destined to deliver on the biggest stage in their sport.

They’ve arrived with authority and now, once more this season, the two get to duel again in what will be must-see stuff during the Blue Jays-Angels series.

SEATTLE MARINERS As if Blue Jays fans in the West weren’t in for a party a couple of years in the making, there’s now a tall, lefthander in tight pants and a loud grunt worth seeing when Toronto makes its summer trek to the Pacific Northwest.

There may not be a wilder scene in baseball than the series in Seattle when the Blue Jays come to town. Thousands and thousands of Canadians invading the ballpark wearing blue and white, taking over downtown and all the establishments around the stadium. The feel of a full-on home series that has Blue Jays players blown away each and every time.

In 2022, an added treat. Robbie Ray signed with the Mariners back in December, fresh off that Cy Young season in Toronto where he put together one of the greatest seasons for a starting pitcher in franchise history. Ray became a hit with the Blue Jays fan base, and not just for his dominance, and ability to go deep into games. He turned his on-field wardrobe into a charity fundraiser for the Jays Care Foundation, designing a t-shirt with his wife, Taylor, that sold like hotcakes across Canada.

Blue Jays fans will be hyped for the trip. The 2020 season, of course, was without fans, and border restrictions prevented the usual Canadian influx last year, too. The wait will only amplify what’s shown to be an already raucous stadium, when the Mariners have the Blue Jays come to Seattle.

BOSTON RED SOX If the final day of the 2021 season had gone differently, the Blue Jays could have snuck into the postseason – and who knows what could have happened from there, what with Toronto being baseball’s hottest team down the stretch.

It was Boston, of course, that knocked Toronto out of the playoffs by virtue of their win in Game 162.

Once again, the Red Sox are expected to be in the October conversation, but the Blue Jays will want their say on the matter, too. In the ever-competitive AL East, the Boston-Toronto head-to-head showdowns may very well tilt the scales on who gets into the tournament at season’s end.

While the Red Sox overachieved last season, they could be lethal if a now-healthy Chris Sale returns to peak form. FanGraphs projects him to pitch over 150 innings, with an ERA of 3.57. Should that happen, the challenge gets even greater for the Blue Jays lineup and the stakes rise more and more with every game against Boston.

Lurking in that rotation for the Red Sox is a Canadian whose career has revitalized at Fenway Park. Nick Pivetta of Victoria, B.C. had a strikeout rate of 26.5%, the highest of his career. Giving up the long ball had been a problem, until arriving in Boston.

But Blue Jays batters have gotten to him, namely Bo Bichette last season (.500/.533/1.071), who had seven hits in 14 ABs against Pivetta. Perhaps the most intriguing matchup this season, though, will be against Vladimir Guerrero Jr. It was last May that Pivetta told me of his excitement to face Vlad and the challenge against a tremendous hitter like Guerrero. But he also said this in our conversation: “When I’m on the mound and I’m commanding my stuff, I’m better than he is.”

Game on for Pivetta and Guerrero, game on for the Red Sox and Blue Jays. One of the many matchups to watch for Toronto in 2022.l

A true sense of what it’s like to be a Toronto Blue Jay is underway for José Berríos.

First arriving via a July 30th trade last season, Berríos now gets to experience the Toronto fan base in full force at Rogers Centre in 2022.

Parting ways with prospects like Austin Martin and Simeon Woods Richardson speaks volumes towards the Blue Jays belief in Berríos, who has been a back-to-back All-Star for the Twins in 2018-19. The trade wasn’t easy on the righty from Puerto Rico, who spent his entire career to that point (five and a half seasons) with the Twins.

In the latter part of the season, Berríos showed the team’s brass that they indeed had what they hoped for in the potential long-term game plan. And following 12 starts with a 5-4 record and a 3.58 ERA, last November an extension was offered. Signing the righty for seven years, a year before his initial contract was up, now gives Toronto a lock front of the rotation starter well into the future. As a result, the team is ahead of the next free agent curve in a sense, with what was expected to be one of the most highly sought after arms on the market after this season staying put.

This is a relationship that goes well beyond the mound, as Berríos embraces not only the organization but the city as well.

"I enjoy the way the people are here. Here we can be human, you can go out and feel safe. You can do your thing and have fun," he said at the time of the extension.

"I have three kids and my wife, (and) I feel really comfortable spending the next seven years here in this city."

Now Berríos is a central part of a starting rotation, which many people believe has been built into one of the tops around the Majors.

While the offseason saw value added with AllStar Kevin Gausman coming over from San Francisco and the club was quick to ink Yusei Kikuchi at the start of Spring Training. There’s a renewed sense of optimism in Toronto and the addition of Jose Berríos is central to securing it.l

BO’S BREAKOUT IN 2021 IS JUST THE BEGINNING

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. tends to be the face that pops into many minds when it comes to the Toronto Blue Jays hitting department. However, not trailing far behind should be Bo Bichette.

The Blue Jays’ shortstop finished a breakout 2021 campaign with an American League best 191 hits, ranking second throughout the Majors behind LA Dodger Trea Turner. In addition, Bichette led Toronto with 25 stolen bases and finished second on the team in runs scored (121) and doubles (30) with a .298 batting average. The 24-year-old’s surge reached first-time All-Star status, in just his third MLB campaign, tantalizing Blue Jays fans about the prospective future for No. 11.

While last year produced big results, it was just a part of what Bichette has put together in his short time as a Blue Jay. Now he enters 2022 as the only player in MLB history with 30-plus home runs, 200-plus hits, 20-plus stolen bases, 40-plus doubles, 100-plus RBI, 100-plus runs and a .300 average through his first 162 career games. He also became the fastest player in franchise history to reach 100 hits (in just 78 games), recording the most hits (289) by a player in his first 234 games to surpass Bob Bailor for the club record.

Key names like Fernandez, Griffin, Gonzalez and Lee have served eras at shortstop in Toronto’s rich past. Now Bichette appears to be on his way to solidifying his place in club lore, with the ability to eclipse all that have appeared before him when it comes to hitting talent.

Quiet by nature, the son of a four-time All-Star (Dante Bichette) has been honed in MLB leadership from a young age and knows exactly what to do in speaking with his play. This was apparent when he hit the biggest home run of his career last season in the heat of a September 29th playoff chase. Facing the Yankees at Rogers Centre, Bo belted his second bomb of the game to give the Blue Jays the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, paving the way to a 6-5 victory. Getting the jacket in the dugout and a curtain call from the fans that day was certainly a memorable moment, but it won’t be the last for Toronto’s star shortstop.l

After a U-turn start, Jordan Romano is on a crystal clear path to success in his hometown.

However, things weren’t always that clear for the bona fide closer.

It was a dream come true and then it wasn’t…but then it was again.

Growing up in Markham, Ontario, Romano would circle the days Ricky Romero was set to toe the rubber. While Romero threw his way to All-Star status in 2011, gunning a career-best 2.92 ERA, an 18-year-old Romano had just retired his hockey aspirations for big league dreams.

Undrafted out of high school, Romano remained focused on what he wanted, pitching at Connors State College and helping the Cowboys reach the National Junior College World Series before transferring to Oral Roberts. Meanwhile, his name was finally called in the 10th round by the Blue Jays in the 2014 draft and suddenly a childhood dream just got a lot closer to reality.

Pitching in the Blue Jays farm system, Romano started his professional ascent from Rookie Ball to Triple-A by 2018.

There was just one problem; he was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the Rule 5 Draft that year. Now seemingly far away from the six-foot-five righty’s ultimate vision, a baseball odyssey ensued. He was immediately traded to Texas that December day but three months later landed back where it all started, Toronto.

From there he picked his glove back up and returned to Dunedin for Spring Training and eventually back to Buffalo. By June 12th of 2019 Romano ran it all back where his dream began. Becoming the 28th Canadian-born player to lace up for the Blue Jays and the 13th to debut with the club, he struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh inning.

Proof he’d finally arrived came with a career-high performance of 23 saves in 2021, putting him third in club history in the category. That’s good bullpen company, trailing only Tom Henke (25) and Casey Janssen (24) within the franchise.

There were some interesting twists and turns along the way, but Jordan Romano appears to be building something special on the very hill he dreamed of standing on all along.l

George Springer is a staple of the Toronto Blue Jays. The funny thing is; he has yet to properly experience it and the fans have yet to fully see it.

The free agent signing of the 2017 World Series MVP was a feather in the cap for GM Ross Atkins in 2021. Right in the middle of COVID uncertainty, it brought a sense of security and leadership to the team’s outfield.

As the MLB plan to tackle the 2021 slate unfolded, Springer’s introduction to his new city remained on ice.

First the team started playing home games out of Dunedin, then set up shop in Buffalo and finally landed in Toronto in late-July under capacity restrictions.

Despite battling through injuries, Springer was certainly an influential factor for the club when he made his debut for the franchise on April 28th against the Nationals. Once arriving in his new Toronto home as the American League Player of the Week (July 26 through August 1st), there was no doubt his six-year $150 million contract (the largest in club history) was going to offer big returns on the investment.

Blue Jays fans got a taste of what the outfielder brings when he launched two home runs on July 31st (the team’s second game back at Rogers Centre). This included one on the first pitch of the game in what would be a 4-0 victory over the Royals.

He then followed up with a second AL Player of the Week nod (August 2nd through 8th). As the first Blue Jay to earn the honour on consecutive weeks, Springer hit .364 with three doubles, a triple, three home runs and 11 RBI in the second week.

Pushing his body late in the year as the team competed for the playoffs, he came up with another AL Player of the Week Award. Now the third mark made him the first AL player to do so since Justin Verlander (2011). He also joined Jose Bautista (2010) as the second player in franchise history to receive the honour three times in a season, hitting .500, with eight runs, three doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI through six games (.962 SLG, 1.497 OPS).

Registering over 20 home runs for the sixth time in his career, Springer made good on his limited body of work with 79 hits in 78 games played.

Take home a record of today’s Jays action by marking the scorecard found in the centrespread. Here’s one method of scoring a game:

1 Every defensive position on the field has a number, as seen above - the shortstop is number 6, the catcher number 2, first baseman number 3, etc.

2 When a batter grounds out to shortstop, he is retired “63”, i.e. the shortstop throws to first base for the out. A batter grounding into a double play - hitting a ground ball to the second baseman, who throws to the shortstop to retire the runner at second, the shortstop then throws back to first to retire the batter - is said to have grounded into a “4-63” double play.

If last season was an indicator, the 2022 version of the Toronto Blue Jays is expected to thrill the baseball world. The 2021 squad was full of young talent with veterans making big contributions to help compete in a grueling American League East. Despite a narrow miss of the MLB postseason (by a single game) the Blue Jays managed to leave everyone entertained and optimistic about the immediate future at Rogers Centre.

A fourth place finish in the American League East doesn’t come close to telling the whole story of the Blue Jays’ 2021 campaign.

There’s lots of context that goes along with the end result. After all, the club finished with 91 wins in a season that saw them constantly on the move and unable to maximize regular hometown comforts and fan support.

To dive deeper, the club faced a bit of a surprising surge in competition out of the AL East, which saw four teams finish with 90 or more wins for the first time since 1978. To the Blue Jays credit, no other team in the majors was forced to adjust to the impact of COVID-19 quite like they did over the past two seasons. The 2021 slate started with 38 games at TD Ballpark in Dunedin, before moving back to Buffalo’s Sahlen Field in June and finally home sweet home to Rogers Centre on July 30th.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was ready to take his play to new heights, regardless of where he played. A three home run game against the Washington Nationals on April 27th perhaps set the tone to the season, as the first baseman finished with seven

RBI on the day to lead the Blue Jays to a 9-5 win.

By June 26th, Vladdy reached the 50-career home run mark in his 258th game, the exact same as his father (Vladimir Sr.). Another statement homer came at the All-Star Game in mid-July at Colorado’s Coors Field, sending one that soared 468 feet, before he was named the game’s MVP and the youngest player to receive the honour all-time (22 years, 119 days).

This was all part and parcel to a breakout season for the first baseman, who finished second in AL MVP voting with a career-high 123 runs scored, 48 home runs (tied for the Major League lead), 111 RBI and a slash line of .311/.401/.601 in 161 games played.

Following 670 days away from Rogers Centre, the Blue Jays finally returned to game action in their regular digs on July 30th versus the Royals. Teoscar Hernández and Bo Bichette homered, while Santiago Espinal made a barehanded grab over the shoulder that put the cap on a welcomed 6-4 victory.

Hernández would go on to rank third throughout the majors with 116 RBI and seventh in the AL with a .296 batting average. The outfielder’s efforts led to a second straight Silver Slugger nod and a first-time All-Star appearance.

Bichette was another force at the plate that showed up at the Midsummer Classic for the first time. The shortstop later compiled the second-most MLB runs scored (121), tied for first in the majors with 58 multi-hit games and second in hits (191). His 289 career hits now stand as the most in club history by a player through his first 234 games, 22 short of Bob Bailor’s benchmark.

Drama continued to compound into August, as George Springer got more comfortable. On August 8th at Rogers Centre, the veteran outfielder propelled the club with a threerun home run against the Boston Red Sox in the eighth. The moment would lead the Blue Jays to an important 9-8 victory.

Although no longer a Blue Jay, Robbie Ray pitched one of the best seasons in franchise history throughout 2021. On August 25th he threw one for the ages, going seven innings with just one earned run and 14 strikeouts (the most Ks by a Blue Jays lefty ever).

By September Toronto knew there was a postseason battle in the works. To start the month the club would go on a serious heater, beginning with a 5-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles and carrying on an eight-game win streak. Who could forget Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s grand slam (September 3rd), helping power six runs in the eighth inning as Toronto came from behind for a late game push against Oakland. Just when things looked to be getting away from them in the top of the ninth, Marcus Semien stepped up in the bottom of the inning with two outs, launching a three-run walkoff homer for the 11-10 win.

The playoff race continued to narrow as the month rolled along. On September 29th Bo Bichette would step to the plate at home

in the eighth against the Yankees and deliver the biggest home run of his young career, for a 6-5 win, marking his second bomb of the game.

When the 2021 campaign finally came to a close there were plenty of positives to take away from the Blue Jays push. Once the squad was finally able to settle back into Rogers Centre it was telling. The squad put up an AL best 22-9 record in September/October, including a seasonal high eight-game winning streak in September and finished with a 25-11 record within the confines of Rogers Centre.

Veterans Marcus Semien and Robbie Ray certainly produced some gem performances to

help anchor the club. Ray earned the AL Cy Young Award by season’s end, leading the league with a 2.84 ERA and an MLB best 248 strikeouts.

To Semien’s credit, replacing what he did at second base is a tall task, after he hit .265/ .334/.538, 45 home runs, 102 RBI and an MLBleading 86 extra-base hits.

The 2021 Blue Jays set a franchise record with their MLB best 262 home runs, with a large portion of that production remaining and growing stronger in unison this season.

Now three of the four Blue Jays to appear in last year’s All-Star Game (Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Teoscar Hernández and Bo Bichette) return ready to produce, as the team looks to take another big step forward and back into the playoffs for 2022.

Newly elected for 2022 is 11-year MLB ace Jeff Francis. Meanwhile Toronto Blue Jays legends John Olerud and Duane Ward will finally receive their in-person honour, following a 2020 election. Also joining the hall this June from the 2020 class are former Minnesota Twins star Justin Morneau and longtime Montreal Expos broadcaster Jacques Doucet.

there during three straight division-winning rosters and back-to-back World Series championships in 1992 and 1993. The 1993 year was a banner one for the Seattle, Washington native, becoming a firsttime All-Star and leading the American League in walks (33), OBP (.473), OPS (1.072), doubles (54 – career high) and a .363 batting average. Pushing towards a .400 average late into August, that season he became the only player in Blue Jays history to win the AL batting title. Olerud would play eight seasons in Toronto before finishing out a 17year MLB career as a two-time All-Star and a three-time Gold Glove Award winner in 2005.

Other stops later would include playing for the Mets, Mariners, Yankees and Red Sox.

JOHN OLERUD Drafted in the third round of the 1989 MLB Draft by the Blue Jays, John Olerud fast-tracked to the Major Leagues with a single in his first at-bat on September 3rd of that year. After splitting time as a DH, Olerud would become the club’s regular first baseman by 1991, fixating himself

DUANE WARD Following a July 6th trade with the Atlanta Braves, the Blue Jays would acquire one of the top relievers in club history, Duane Ward. The hard hurling righty, along with fellow reliever Tom Henke, helped give Toronto one of the most lethal bullpen tandems during the late 1980s and early ’90s. Encapsulated within Ward’s nine seasons as a Blue Jay, split as a setup man and a closer, included two World Series titles (1992 and ’93). The ’92 season saw Ward post a career-best 1.95 ERA over 79 games and he would follow up the next year by moving into the closer role and leading the American League with 45 saves and 70 appearances (a single season club record). Ward’s remarkable efforts during the ’93 led to a All-Star nod and put him fifth among AL Cy Young voting. Those

watching old footage of the infamous Game 6 of the ’93 World Series, in which Joe Carter hit the game winning home run, will also note Ward as the Blue Jays’ winning pitcher against the Phillies. In eight World Series appearances during the team’s back-to-back championship runs, the New Mexico native posted a 3-0 record, a 1.13 ERA, 13 strikeouts and two saves. His 452 games played and 121 saves are the second-most by a pitcher in Blue Jays history, finishing his career with the club in 1995.

JUSTIN MORNEAU One of the men who made a huge impact on the game of baseball in this country as a player, Justin Morneau. The New Westminster, B.C. native played for the North Delta Blue Jays and the Canadian Junior National Team before being selected by the Minnesota Twins in the third round of the 1999 MLB Draft.

Originally a catcher in the Minor Leagues, Morneau would shift to become a top-flight first baseman, making his Major League

A native of Montreal, Quebec, Jacques Doucet has been calling Major League Baseball for more than four decades. A beat reporter for La Presse when Montreal was awarded a franchise in 1968, Doucet began play-by-play of Expos games for French language radio broadcasts for 33 years, starting in 1972.

Following the team’s departure to Washington in 2004, he called games for the independent Can-Am League Quebec Capitals from 2006 to 2011.

From there Doucet returned to MLB, broadcasting the Toronto Blue Jays games in French for TVA Sports, where his voice remains a fixture today.

Doucet has called over 5,500 MLB games and for his longevity has been honoured into the Quebec Baseball Hall of Fame (2002), the Montreal Expos Hall of Fame (2003) and received the Jack Graney Award by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame as a media member who made significant contributions to the game in this country through a lifetime of work. He has also been a finalist for the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s Ford C. Frick Award.

A longtime ambassador of the game’s grassroots in his home province, Jacques has been an active supporter of minor baseball in Quebec and was an executive with the Quebec Junior Elite Base League from 2004 to 2011 in addition to his involvement in the Quebec Summer Games in 2014.

Morneau was a three-time Tip O’Neill Award recipient Junior National Team experience in 1999, as a pro he competed for Canada at the IBAF Baseball World Cup in 2001, the Olympic Qualifier in 2003 and four World Baseball Classics. For his efforts he is already honoured on Baseball Canada’s Wall of Excellence (2010).

“When I heard the news that I would be enshrined in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame I was honoured,” Morneau stated in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s announcement. “When I learned of fellow inductees, John Olerud, Duane Ward and Jacques Doucet, I was at a loss for words. To think that I would be joining these distinguished members that had such a lasting impact on baseball in Canada is truly humbling. I am looking forward to being in St. Marys this summer to celebrate with my fellow inductees in person. Thank you to the voters and the Hall for this incredible honour, and all that the Hall does for the game of baseball in Canada.”

debut on June 10, 2003. From there he became a mainstay within the Twins organization for the better part of 11 seasons, including for four straight All-Star nods from 2007 to 2010. Becoming one of the top hitters in the American League, he won two Silver Slugger Awards in 2006 and 2008 in addition to being the only Canadian to win the AL MVP in 2006.

That same season he tied Larry Walker for the most RBI by a Canadian hitter with 130, opening up four consecutive 100 RBI campaigns during his career. In 2008 Morneau also became the only Canuck to win the MLB All-Star Game’s Home Run Derby.

After he was traded to Pittsburgh in 2013, Morneau helped the club to its’ first postseason appearance since 1992. The lefty hitter landed in Colorado in time for the 2014 season, wearing Walker’s old No. 33. There Morneau went on to win the National League batting title with a .319 average that year, joining Walker as the second man from Canada to achieve such a feat. Following two seasons with the Rockies, his career would come to a close with the Chicago White Sox in 2016, finishing with 1,545 games played over 14 seasons with a .281 batting average and 247 home runs.

A three-time Tip O’Neill Award recipient (2006, 2008 and 2014), Justin also represented his country on the field on several occasions. Along with his

Throughout his 11-year career Francis appeared in 254 games spread across the American and National Leagues. From 2004 to 2015 he saw MLB action with the Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds, Oakland A's, New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays, finishing with 72 major league wins (the secondmost by a Canadian left-hander). Among all Canadian Major League pitchers he remains fifth in starts, seventh in wins and eighth in strikeouts and innings pitched.

“I was so excited to get the news from the Hall of Fame of my induction,” said Francis. “When I see the list of people and players that I will be joining on the walls in St. Marys, I’m honoured and humbled to be considered to be on that level. This is not something that is ever in an athlete’s mind during his or her playing days, but in the time since my last days of playing, I’ve become proud of what I accomplished in baseball. I consider this not just a recognition of my achievements in the game, but of the coaching, mentorship, and support I’ve received from so many other people.”

Guests will refrain from displays of affection, inappropriate in a public family setting.

Guests are invited to make use of the Rogers Centre Fan Assist Program if they have an issue in their seating section or a question related to their experience.

Inappropriate or indecent clothing will not detract from the guest experience.

Guests will consume alcoholic beverages in a responsible manner. Intervention with an impaired or intoxicated guest will be handled in a prompt and safe manner.

The progress of the game/event will not be disrupted by guests' actions or by unauthorized persons entering the playing field/event area or restricted areas.

Failure of guests to adhere to these policies may result in the denial of admission to or immediate removal from the stadium without refund.

You can always find him dancing on the dugouts and entertaining fans throughout the stadium. ACE is always walking around the concourse taking photos with fans. Advance Inside Ticket Window During any Toronto Blue Jays home game, fans can make upgrade purchase inquires for their day-of-game seat by visiting this location on the 100-Level behind Section 127 (Gate 9A). The Inside Ticket Window is available when gates open until the end of the 5th inning.

Aisles & Aisles Etiquette For the safety and enjoyment of other guests, Rogers Centre and the Toronto Blue Jays ask that you please do not sit or stand in the aisles. Aisle must be kept clear at all times.

While the game is on and ball is in play, fans are asked to wait at the top/entrance to the seating area until there is a break in play. This is not only for the safety of our fans due to the possibility of foul balls entering the stands, but also a courtesy to those fans who are already seated.

Cashless Payment Rogers Centre is accepting cashless payment only. Reverse ATMs (cash input to receive a pre-loaded debit card) are available inside Jays Shop (Section 112) and at Section 134.

Locations on the Level 100 at Sections 120 & 135; Level 200 at Sections 212 & 236; Level 500 at Section 525. They will accommodate Blackberry, iPhone and Android devices.

Fan Assist Fans are invited to make use of the Rogers Centre Fan Assist Program if they have an issue in their seating section or a question related to their experience. The process is quick and simple and by using the Fan Assist Program, guests are able to report issues in a discreet and convenient manner. Fan Services Fan Services booths are located on the 100Level near Sections 120 and 135, on the 200Level near Sections 212 and 236 and on the 500-Level near Sections 508 and 532.

Guests can check strollers or wheelchairs, obtain Misplaced ACE Wristbands for their children and receive assistance related to lost persons or items, pass along feedback and make other general inquiries.

50/50 Draw In support of Jays Care Foundation, our popular 50/50 draw offers fans the chance to support our cause and win BIG! In 2021, Blue Jays fans raised nearly $6 million in support of Jays Care programs that help children and youth on and off the field. Fans can purchase tickets online by visiting bluejays.com/5050 or by finding our friendly fundraisers in the bright red t-shirts located throughout the stadium. All tickets must be purchased using credit or debit, whether online or in-stadium.

First Aid First Aid rooms are located on each level near Sections 134, 238 and 539. Guests re-

quiring first aid assistance are urged to contact any member of the Rogers Centre staff or report to one of our Fan Services or First Aid locations. A certified physician and registered nurses are available during all Blue Jays games. Ascent EMS will also provide paramedics throughout the facility. Please note the opening and staffing of First Aid locations can sometimes depend on ticket sales on different levels of the stadium.

Foul Balls, Homerun Balls & Bats All guests are asked to stay alert throughout the game for foul balls or bats that might leave the playing area. Guests are permitted to keep any foul and home run balls that are hit into the seats but are asked to be cautious and courteous to others when collecting a ball. Bats entering the stands must be returned if requested by the Blue Jays or visiting team. Guests are prohibited from throwing balls back onto the field. Violators are subject to ejection and possible arrest. Any guest that interferes with a ball in play or the game in any way is subject to ejection from the ballpark and or criminal prosecution.

In/Out Privileges Security reasons preclude Rogers Centre from allowing in/out privileges to individuals who choose to leave the building. Exceptions can be made in special circumstances through our fan service locations. In these situations, a Security supervisor will be called in to assist with your need.

Jays Shop Fans are invited to shop at the Jays Shop Stadium Edition, which carries the largest selection of Official Toronto Blue Jays merchandise, apparel, collectables, novelties and so much more. Located beside Gate 5, it is the largest team store in all of Canada. You can enter from street level or during Blue Jays games from inside the stadium on the 100-Level concourse by Section 112. This 8,000 square foot facility is open seven days a week 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours on Blue Jays home dates (generally closing 30 minutes postgame). Jr. Jays Club Jr. Jays Club is a membership program for kids 14 and under built to create memorable experiences for young fans to build a lasting connection to the team. New for 2022, we are offering two Jr. Jays Club Membership options; Jr. Jays Club Memberships (Free) and Jr. Jays Club All-Star Memberships (Paid).

Jr. Jays Sundays Kids 14 & under are invited to join us at the ballpark for Jr. Jays Sundays on every Sunday home game throughout the 2022 Regular Season (with the exception of Opening Weekend & Fan Appreciation Weekend). On Jr. Jays Sundays, kids can visit our Jr. Jays Zones located on the 100, 200 and 500 levels. Activation zones run until the end of the game. Postgame, Jr. Jays can run the bases just like the pros.

Beginning on June 5 and running until the end of August, kids can also take part in our Jr. Jays Sundays Outdoor Program outside of Gates 5/6, 7/8 and 10/11. Outdoor programming begins at 10:30 a.m. and runs up until first pitch.

Jr. Jays also have the opportunity to be randomly selected by the J FORCE to participate in various in-game activations.

Please note: there will be no Jr. Jays programming or Run the Bases on Opening Weekend or Fan Appreciation Weekend.

Lost and Found Guests who lose an item during a Blue Jays game should visit any Fan Services location to check if the item has been returned.

Guests can also contact our Lost & Found department at 416-341-1000. Lost items are held for approximately one month before they are donated to local charities.

Roof Opening/Closing The decision for the roof to be opened or closed during Blue Jays games is dependent upon information obtained from several weather service sources. If the game begins with the roof open, the roof can be closed at any time if climatic conditions warrant.

If the game begins with the roof closed, it may still be opened before the end of the sixth inning if the Umpire Crew Chief and Blue Jays officials agree the weather has turned in a way that will ensure fan comfort and enjoyment. The Blue Jays strive to make Rogers Centre an "outdoor" facility by having the roof open as often as possible. However, the comfort of our guests is a high priority and is always taken into consideration. In Toronto, particularly in June, July, and August high temperatures may result in Heat Warnings issued by the City.

Unless fluids are appropriately replaced, heat related illness may occur. Guests with cardiac, respiratory or gastrointestinal problems are at higher risk for heat related illness. Heat related problems can usually be prevented by: • • • • •

Applying sunscreen 15-30 SPF Wearing a hat Wearing light, loose fitting clothes Drinking plenty of water or sports drinks Limiting alcohol consumption

If you become hot, sweaty, fatigued and thirsty, you should get out of the sun immediately and begin to replenish your fluids. If these symptoms continue or you develop dizziness or muscle cramps, you should visit one of our First Aid rooms for further evaluation and treatment.

Security Measures In order to provide our guests with a safe environment, the following security measures may be in effect: • Searches at all entry gates will include the inspection of all items that are carried into the stadium. Everyone entering will be subject to full searches of their person, with the use of walk through metal detectors (WTMD); other methods include hand-held metal detectors or pat downs.

• Searches may cause delays in entering the stadium and we encourage everyone to arrive early. Those patrons who do not carry

any items into the stadium will enter more rapidly than those who bring items in with them. Guests are encouraged to leave belongings in their vehicles or at home whenever possible.

• Law enforcement personnel will be present at all entrances throughout the facility along with our staff to ensure guest safety. We thank our guests for their patience and cooperation in making your experience at Rogers Centre safe and enjoyable.

• Please report any suspicious activity in or around Rogers Centre - See Something, Say Something.

• Safety is everyone's responsibility - if you see suspicious activity please report it to any member of our Event staff or uniformed Police personnel.

Multi-purpose and Universal Washroom Multi-Purpose Washrooms are available for all guests requiring a little extra room or privacy. These washrooms are located near Sections, 134, 238 and 538.

A Universal Washroom is located at Section 117. This washroom is equipped with an adult change table.

If you have any issues gaining access to either of these areas, please ask a staff member for assistance or visit one of our Fan Services locations to report the inconvenience.

Trespassing Any fan venturing onto the playing field before, during or after a game or event will be subject to criminal prosecution under the criminal code. Guests are also prohibited from accessing dugout roofs, bullpens, clubhouses and all other non-ticketed areas within Rogers Centre.
