Welcome SCOTS PGC Collegians!

Over the past 12 months the Past Student Association (PSA) the College and our College Foundation have been busy working to reconnect and reenergise our Alumni Community.

The PSA have an active Facebook page where we have been profiling students, sharing snippets from the past and reconnecting people. We have been overwhelmed by the support of the platform and the interaction from sharing “our” stories.

We recognise that not everyone is on Facebook and so the purpose of this newsletter is enable us to share the wonderful news from our community and connect with a greater number of our past students.

We will be sharing with you stories from the Facebook page, along with updates on PSA events and significant College news. The College will of course continue to publish bi-annual ‘Lion and Thistle’ magazine but this monthly newsletter will provide a regular update of what is going on throughout the year. So, if you have news to share, please get in contact - we would love to hear from you!

Meet your PSA President CARLY GODDARD CLASS OF 1997

Carly Goddard was appointed to take on the role as President of the Past Students Association, taking the baton from Adrian Estwick, who retired from the role in 2021.

Carly and her family have a strong and long standing connection with the College, which begins with her mother, Robyn Kienzle (Class of 1969) who was also Chair of the SCOTS PGC College Council from (2002-2007) and author of Architect of Kokoda.

Married to fellow Class of 1997 Graduate, Christopher Goddard, Carly completed a Bachelor of Business at Griffith University. Carly and Chris, moved overseas in 2005 and became caretakers of a chateau in the Loire Valley in France.

A year later they returned to the Gold Coast and with her father, Soc Kienzle and her sister Suzanne Kienzle (Class of 2002), walked the Kokoda Trail.

When Carly and Chris married in 2010, many of their fellow SCOTS PGC classmates were guests and formed much of the wedding party. After the wedding, they spent another year at the French chateau followed by some time in Canada.

The Goddards moved to Toowoomba in mid-2011 to start a family. They are the proud, but tired parents of Mitchell Goddard (7), and Ciara Goddard (4) and have since settled in sunny Cairns.

With the help of all current and interested PSA members, Carly is hoping to revitalise the PSA. She believes she is well positioned for this task having maintained good friendships with many fellow SCOTS PGC graduates and having a long family history with the school.

Her goal is for the PSA to play a much more active role in past and current students’ lives and really embrace a reciprocally advantageous relationship for all members.

Carly and Chris enjoyed time in France as the caretakers of a chateau in the Loire Valley.

On Tuesday 15 March the SCOTS PGC Foundation and Past Students Association co-hosted a luncheon in Toowoomba at the Downs Club.

The sell-out event was a fabulous opportunity for past students to reconnect both with each other and the College.

Principal Kyle Thompson and College Chairman Martin Webb (also a past student) provided an update on what’s been happening at the College.

Past students travelled from as far as Canberra, Hervey Bay and Tenterfield to attend.

75 past students attended the event and many more memories were shared.

At this year’s annual Dawn Service, the College remembered the life of 404172 Sergeant Mervyn Cobbe Crombie, 70 OTU RAAF - one of our ‘Magnificent 42’ Commemorating ANZAC Day is one of the most important events on the College calendar. It was wonderful to be joined by lots of special visitors, past students, returned veterans and our College community to collectively remember all who served and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

When we leave the green gates we often wonder what our old classmates are doing and how they’re getting on. Our student profile section ‘Did you know?’ provides short snippets of SCOTS PGC graduates and what they’re up to.

SALLY JOSEPH | Class of 1991 Sally is a leading Clinical Nutritionist, speaker and author of bestselling book, Love Your Gut - a complete guide to transform your health & lose weight through healing your gut.

Sally was inspired to become a Clinical Nutritionist after fully recovering from two autoimmune diseases, Lupus and Hashimoto’s in her early 20’s. Sally studied Human Health Science at the University of New England, Armidale and Nutrition and Herbal Medicine at ACNT in Sydney, she then went on to run a successful practice, where clients included Miranda Kerr, Layne Beachley, members of INXS and the international Quicksilver Pro surf team and cast & crew of Hollywood films including, Matrix Trilogy, Mission Impossible, Moulin Rouge and Super Man The Return.

BEN HOCKINGS | Class of 1995 Ben lives in Adelaide with his wife Courtney and their four young boys.

After moving to the Gold Coast to attend Griffith University, Ben moved to Adelaide in 2002.

Ben has been a train driver for over ten years as well as managing his own event management business.

A keen cross country runner at SCOTS PGC College, Ben went on to run for South Australia at the National Cross Country Championships in 2004, and was SA state trail running champion in 2013 and 2014.

Ben keeps in touch with many of his SCOTS classmates through social media, and can’t wait to attend a reunion as soon as he can.

SCOTT STUART | Class of 2001 Scott is a best-selling children’s author, whose books have appeared on numerous global bestseller lists, as well as receiving nominations for Children’s Book of the Year & Picture Book of the Year (My Shadow is Pink).

After graduating, Scott worked as a graphic & toy designer, where he got to fulfil a long-time dream of creating toys and merchandise for franchises like Harry Potter, Kung Fu Panda and the Simpsons. Before resigning from design in 2020 to become a full-time author, he spent 2 years working at The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation in Melbourne, where he got to use his design skills to help raise funds for kids in need.

During those years as a designer, he took up a dance style called West Coast Swing, which eventually led to him becoming an International Champion in the style, travelling the world teaching and performing almost every weekend.

Today, whilst being a full-time kids author, Scott is also working on his first animated film which will be released in 2022.

RYLE WAUGH | Class of 2012 Ryle is a passionate Polocrosse player. Ryle first represented Polocrosse Association of Australia at only 17 years old in the Australia vs Ireland game, then again in South Africa in 2016 . She won many awards in the Polocrosse including best overall player.

She went on to again represent Australia at open level in Zambia. While still playing at a high level, she has opened her own business in Warwick, Sundaze Beauty Therapy and specialises in skincare treatments. If you’re in town, please support your lovely local Past Student mate.

The College is hitting the road and they’s love to catch up with you as early as NEXT WEEK! That’s right, next week!

The first stop is Roma on Monday night and then they’ll be stopping off in all listed locations as they make their way west to attend the ICPA QLD State Conference in Blackall.

Having graduated in 1997, I am delighted to return to SCOTS PGC as the Foundation Manager. It is a real honour to once again be part of this unique, inclusive and supportive College with rural values at its heart.

In the years since graduating, I have been fortunate to work extensively within private boarding schools, both in Australia and overseas, and spent ten successful years in the not-for-profit sector. Along the way I enjoyed travelling through Europe and Africa, collected a husband and three children before returning home to the Darling Downs.

I am thrilled to be working with the College community, its past students and families and the greater local community, to support the College’s mission and vision. The College has some bold plans for its future and its historic buildings, so it’s an exciting time to be part of this and witness the future growth of both the Foundation and SCOTS PGC College.
