Respectful Relationships

Across all age groups in our College, the teaching and modelling of respectful relationships is embedded in what we teach and how we behave.

In subjects such as Physical Education, Personal Development and Health, which is compulsory, respectful relationships are taught and discussed explicitly. A sample of the work we undertake in Years 9 & 10 is provided for you here. You can access these via the following link: Click HERE The sample of work provided is specified by the NSW Educational Authority (NESA) and has been developed by experts in this field and is taught at a time when our children are rapidly maturing through the ‘adolescent period’ of life.

In all other subjects where such issues arise through the study of certain texts and topics, historical events, or matters of faith and belief, discussion takes place and clear direction is given. By way of explanation, the approach taken to discussing and modelling respectful relationships from age to age varies to take into account the socio-emotional development of children. I.e. It is ‘age-appropriate.’

Easter Service and Hat Parade

The Junior School will be holding their Easter service and Hat Parade

As a co-educational College, our students work together, sharing, discussing and hearing one another’s views and beliefs about what respectful relationships are; what is O.K. and what is not O.K. There has been considerable discussion across all levels of our community on this issue with a focus on consent, specifically as it applies to sexual relationships.

Over the past month or so I have been teaching values to Years 9, 10, 11 and 12. As part of that teaching, students have been identifying and understanding their own values. I can assure you they are overwhelmingly positive!

Of all the things they value, the highest is family. You, their parents and other key members of your family, provide the foundation upon which they build their lives.

Never underestimate the influence that family and school, in partnership, have on directing our children in all areas of their lives and development.

Here at the Senior Campus of the College, I have invited our students to become part of this conversation with their peers and teachers. Over the next few weeks, in a planned and supportive way, we will work together as a

team, discussing what respectful relationships really are.

It will be an ongoing discussion which will be informative and possibly challenging too, but this one’s important!

This week’s column comes fresh from Galston Gorge in Berowra Waters National Park, north of Sydney.

I’ve just completed a beautiful bush walk with our Stage 2 students who have had a great time on camp. The boys and girls had an action-packed few days featuring rock climbing, bushwalking, damper cooking, initiative and pool games, orienteering and even a special game of spy hunter with some mysterious guests! It was a great opportunity to make some new friends, sleep in a cabin and clean up after dinner. There were regular opportunities to learn about God and reflect at the end of each day.

A wet day on Tuesday couldn’t slow down the fun and excitement to be had by so many. I can’t wait for the next one!

Crazy Sock Day and Masila A big thank you to all the students who wore crazy socks to school last Friday and brought in a gold coin for our sponsor child, Masila. Over $300 was raised, which will greatly assist Masila and his family.

Parent-Teacher Interviews Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held next week in Week 9. This is a great opportunity to discuss how your child has settled in and the progress they are making in the new year. You should have all received confirmation of your time when you made your booking. If you are unsure of your time, please email belinda.boshier@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au Easter Hat Parade and Art Exhibition All Prep and K-4 students are encouraged to design and create an Easter hat for our very special Easter Hat Parade to be held on the Junior School Football Field at 2:30 pm on Wednesday 31 March at Campus West (Saints). Students are encouraged to be as creative as they would like to be. Hats should be brought into school and given to the classroom teacher on Monday 29 March.

ROAR Public Speaking Program

Prep classes

All students should be finalising preparations for their speeches, which will be delivered next week. Speeches will be posted on Seesaw. Here are few final tips to help your child deliver an engaging speech:

Preparatory classes will cease at 3:00 pm on Tuesday 23, Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 March so that staff can prepare for ParentTeacher Interviews. On these days students in Mrs Chapman and Mrs Rivett’s classes will be taken to the first classroom and commence After-School Instruction at 3:00 pm.

• Encourage some eye contact with the audience.

Preparatory School news

• Add a few facial expressions and gestures, however, keep in mind that a speech is not a theatrical or dramatic performance.

• Consider varying volume and changing the pitch of your voice or adding a meaningful pause.

• Try adding a memorable final statement.

• Remember that confidence grows with practice and experience.

Junior School Camps and Excursions K-2 classes will take part in agriculturalbased excursions over the next two weeks.

This initiative which is part of our STEM program aims to connect our students with local communities, producers and industries and bring real-life local farming experiences to our students. The program aims to challenge the way students think about food and where it comes from.

Stage 1 will travel to the Huntley Berry Farm on Tuesday 23 March where they will undertake a full tour of the farm, including production and marketing techniques and a small punnet of fresh fruit for every child.

Kindergarten is off to the College Farm on Campus East (Scots) on Monday 29 March.

Year 9 will assist Kindergarten as they place the sheep in the yards to weigh and observe the cows/calves. Kindergarten will also learn about some farm tools including the tractor, scales, cattle yards, shovels. Sounds exciting!

Middle School Try Day and Boarding Sleepover This week we welcomed a large number of new students to our school for our Middle School Try Day. They had many opportunities to meet new friends and get to know the teachers whilst taking part in some exciting Science, Art, PE, Music and STEM activities. I was very impressed with the kindness and warm welcome provided by the current Year 6 Scots All Saints students.

The new Middle School boarders also had a sleepover in the boarding house last Sunday night, which gave them a taste of boarding life. I had the privilege of having dinner with the boarders on Sunday night and was pleased to see how comfortable the new boarders were feeling with their new surrounds.

HICES and ISA Swimming Carnivals Congratulations to all of our students who represented the College with pride at the HICES and ISA Swimming Carnivals last week at the Homebush Aquatic Centre. We had some tremendous performances in the pool and have a large contingent of students make it in to the representative teams for the respective associations.

Parent-Teacher Interviews Parents will have the opportunity to meet with their child’s Core Teacher next week to discuss how they have settled in the Term 1. All parents would have received an Operoo notification about signing up for one of these interviews, and I encourage everyone to take this opportunity to touch base with their child’s Core Teacher.

Winter Sport Choices All parents should have received an Operoo notification over the last week regarding selecting a Winter Sport for their child. Please note that your child is required to commit to the sport of their choice for the entire Winter sport season.

With the lifting of some restrictions lately, it has been such a delight to hear the students singing again. Last week in Chapel the students sang 10,000 Reasons a definite favourite, and in Assembly this week we sang the National Anthem. With some normality to our routine, it is easy to forget that we are still in a worldwide pandemic. Our international students certainly haven’t forgotten the impact as they face another looming holiday break where they can’t return home to see their family. At assembly, our School Captains, Simi and Jonah, summarised the situation faced by these students and conducted a lovely interview with Mark Lui, the International Students’ Prefect. Mark was very upbeat in looking at the positives and gave us all a little insight into life at home for him in Hong Kong. Our international students have showed resilience in the face of their challenges, and they are to be commended for this.

Central West da Vinci Decathlon Scots All Saints College will soon be hosting the prestigious Central West da Vinci Decathlon. Forty teams from schools all around the region will converge upon Campus West (Saints) for three days of academic competition, stimulation and enrichment. The competition will be a celebration of the academic excellence that our College is renowned for, as well as a wonderful opportunity to showcase our school and students to the broader community.

Scots All Saints College will have teams in all year groups from Year 5 through to Year 11 inclusive. Some of the teams have already begun preparing for the competition with some activities occurring before school.

All the best to everyone in the cross country next week. This will be an opportunity for each student to set a challenge, yet have some fun in the process. While we are talking about setting challenges, many students have taken the opportunity to compete in the da Vinci Decathlon next week. I know they will all benefit from the experience and we look forward to hearing their results.

I would like to commend Year 12 for the way they have conducted themselves throughout the examination week. They have gone about their exams with a sense of calmness and determination. Well done!

Student Wellbeing Mr Tom van Gend Head of Student Wellbeing K-12

Induction Service for Senior School Student Leaders On Friday 5 March we welcomed parents of the student leaders to Aikman Hall on Campus East (Scots). We had held off on staging the event in the hope that restrictions may have eased sufficiently for us to gather as a College community, bringing students, staff and families together to celebrate the occasion.

However, we finally had to decide either to hold the service during the day - allowing students to be present, but with no parents, or to hold the service outside of school hours. We went with the latter as we felt it important for students and their parents to be here to share the occasion.

The young women and men inducted as leaders achieved their positions on merit. The selection process required applicants to complete a comprehensive application, to show the support of their teachers and peers through a ballot, and to take part in an interview to discuss with Ms Leaf and myself the positions for which they wished to apply. Some attended a second interview with Mr Weeks for the positions of College Captains. Above all, each leader has showed during their time at the College that they are young people of character and substance. Each has a vision of leadership that will enable a better College experience for their fellow students.

It is sometimes necessary to be cautious in terms of singing the praises of the students who are appointed to positions of leadership. This service usually takes place at the very beginning of their tenure, before they have had the chance to do anything. The advantage of holding our service at this time in the school year is that I could report on the achievements of each program area:

The boarding prefects have worked with staff to bring new resources and facilities into the Houses, and to institute programs of weekend activities for boarders.

The Chapel Prefects have helped to facilitate the introduction of the Alpha program into Christian Studies classes at the College and have led the Cru Group, which continues to attract increased student membership - all in the absence of a chaplain.

The Co-curricular prefects have looked for ways to provide a forum to showcase the variety and wealth of talent within our student ranks. They have coordinated, stagemanaged and presented a very successful Battle of the Bands, and also co-ordinated key aspects of the induction service.

Our International Students Prefect has played a vital role in maintaining the morale of our overseas students, who have not been home or seen their families for more than a year. He has worked with staff to ensure that individual and cultural events important to these are celebrated – for example, our recent dinner to celebrate Chinese New Year.

The social justice prefects liaised the efforts of the House Captains so that the proceeds of the modified House Relay for Life supported the works of the NSW Cancer Council, while also educating students about the risks of skin cancers and how to prevent them. More recently, they raised money for Ronald McDonald House in Orange through the annual Valentine’s Day carnations event.

Our College Captains have had reduced opportunities to represent our College to the community, as there have been reductions in the number of community events.

They have excelled in the other, more difficult role of College Captain. They have brought the leaders together and ensured that all portfolios are working in a coordinated way to create and enhance opportunities for our students. They have worked behind the scenes to support, encourage, build bridges and smooth out obstacles to provide each portfolio with opportunities to be in the spotlight.

The House Captains were at the helm for vibrant and inclusive athletics and swimming carnivals, as well as organising different activities for the modified House Relay for Life Event held in late Term 4.

The academic prefects were proactive in making contact with Mr Weeding well before his joining us on campus.

They are completing the organisational aspects of study initiatives that will be of significant benefit to our senior students.

Winter’s here people!

Last weekend marked the end of our ISA Tennis and Touch competitions, but it’s not all sad if you’re a lover of summer sports, we still have a number of College teams well in contention in local Touch, Basketball and Cricket competitions. Stay tuned.

This week we’re busy with Netball, Soccer and Hockey trials taking place at our Middle and Senior Schools plus our Winter Active Afternoon's program kicks off today on Campus East (Scots). Campus West (Saints) will start its Winter program in the first week of Term 2. Fun times ahead!

ISA Touch - Scots All Saints 2-6 Redlands On Saturday 13 March the Junior A Touch team travelled to contest the finals of the ISA Touch Junior A Division at Macquarie Park in Sydney. Having claimed a 2-1 victory over the Redlands team the week before, the girls were always likely to be in for a tough game.

The girls faced an early challenge with Redlands playing fast and aggressively through the middle, scoring their first try in the opening exchanges. SASC was not to be deterred though, with some great attacking play giving Eva Green space to dive through a gap to the line.

The game continued to evolve with even amounts of possession for both SASC and Redlands. Redlands finished the first half stronger, making the most of their opportunities and taking a 4-2 lead at the break.

During a hard-fought second half, SASC played incredibly well in challenging conditions. Ultimately Redlands were better able to convert the chances they created and following two late scores against a tired defence ran out 6-2 winners over a valiant SASC team.

It was a fantastic collective effort from all teams during the shortened ISA Touch Football season for our Senior and Junior teams. We are already looking forward to next season and growing together as a group.

HOCKEY Our senior Hockey representatives did us proud last week in sunny Wyong with the WAS U18s team bringing home the silverware. Special shout out to Philippa Webb and Lily Kable who were selected in the U16s side, as well as Clare Mawhood and Lily Kable (again!), who were selected in the U18s side.

Our ISA Summer Tennis season wrapped up on Saturday with our annual Singles Championships.

Sarah Edwards ran away with the junior title. She didn’t actually ‘run away’ with it. Sarah won it (fairly and squarely) by playing some great tennis against a range of tricky opponents. Well done, Sarah.

Massive congratulations to the entire ISA Tennis team on a great season. No dummy spits. No racket throwing. Just 100% effort and unbelievable sportsmanship. We’re already looking forward to next season.

ISA Swimming Results Last week’s ISA Swimming Carnival was, in the words of Borat a 'great success'. We came away with eight of our swimmers making it through to the next stage of the competition where they’ll represent ISA in the upcoming NSWCIS Carnival at Homebush in April.

Well done to Tahlia O’Connell, Emily Browne, Nikki Browne, Francesca Burke, Josephine Craig, Annabelle Kerridge, Lillian Milgate and Todd Nelson.

While we’re in the pool, let’s announce some College records that were broken at this year’s Middle School carnival. A big shout out to Harry Thorne (six records), Kade O’Connell (four records), Zephir Valsain (three records), Leo Klonis (one record) and Lillian Milgate (one record). That’s 15 records that were broken in our short 50-event carnival. Pretty good going, people!

We’d also like to wish our Primary School swimming representatives all the best as they take part in the NSWCIS Carnival today at Homebush.

Cross your fingers and toes for Isla Fitzgerald, Charlotte Bateman, Sasha Green, Lara Kearney, Emily Saint, Aleki Finau, Archie Fitzgerald, Thomas Roughley and Harry Thorne. We’ll let you know how they performed next week.

From the P&F Mrs Gem Green P&F Vice President

Enormous thanks to all parents and staff who attended the Evening Under the Stars event earlier in the month. Thanks to the P&F and the College for creating such an easy going and lovely evening. This joint event is now firmly planted in the calendar as one not to miss! I would like to give particular mention to Christopher and Xanthe Morgan at Abercrombie House for creating such a seamless and exquisite evening.

Planning is well underway for the inaugural Spring Gathering that will be held Sunday 12 September.

This is a brand new event for the P&F and the College, bringing together and evolving the best of The Highland Gathering and Spring Fair events. Some great ideas are coming together for this, and it is absolutely a blank canvas in many respects for the community to input their ideas and get creative! A site walk will occur on Thursday 25 March at 3:30 pm and if you wish to attend this and come share your ideas, please RSVP with Michaela Barclay at Reception, Campus West (Saints).

If you would like to contribute behind the scenes with the organisation, or the offering of people power hours on the day, please contact secretarysascpfa@outlook.com to register your interest. If you have ideas of what you feel would be great for this event – email our Secretary your ideas or touch base with anyone on the P&F. This event will be as great as the people power volunteers and creative ideas that come in to play. The P&F welcomes all who wish to take part in this event!

Celebrations for Francophonie Day Francophonie Day is on Friday, 20 March; a worldwide celebration to promote the French language and culture around the world.

Our school is identified as a leader in delivering French language studies in NSW. For this reason, we have the privilege of welcoming Consul General André François Giroux from the High Commission of Canada. The Canadian Government is committed to supporting the learning of the

French language in Australian schools. The hilarious and entertaining Sean Murphy is also attending to perform Tiguidou! a one hour in-school performance for Year 8 that explores French Canadian language and culture through the prism of interactive comedy. It’s fresh, fun and thoroughly educational!

We look forward in anticipation to their arrival.

Marsden School for Girls, its Foundation - Opening and Closing Dulcie Butler and Amy Milthorpe were the first of many to hold the office of prefect.

The new building Merrick House was the first to be opened on 20 February 1927 by the then Lord Bishop of London, the Right Reverend A.W. Ingram. He spoke to the girls on “the secret of being young all your lives……keep at your games…. keep your mind active… keep the heart alive.…keep in touch with the living God”.

The school continued to grow so much that it was necessary to use the stables of Woolstone a nearby residence to accommodate some students and staff. In March 1927 Rutherford House was damaged by a fire in the roof. Building continued as the school grew and the next important construction was that of The Chapel of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary which was completed and dedicated on 28 August 1928. The Chapel continued to be “a focal point for both staff and students”. From 1939 to 1942 the School continued with the girls working hard to raise money for the war effort. By the end of 1942, the school closed and the girls were sent to other independent schools in the state.

Even though the school closed from 1943 to 1948 the buildings did not remain dormant as they were used by a branch of the army the Australian Women’s Army Service from 1943 to 1944. “The only drawback was the cold … there was no heating in the rooms ……” as an ex-member of the A.W.A.S. recalls.

Miss Eleanor Appel was the next Headmistress, and with 46 girls the school reopened in February 1948. During her time new classrooms, a hall, and dormitories were built. Lomas House had three dormitories on the top floor and the ground floor was used for the library, office, classrooms and an anteroom. All of the dormitories in the new building and in the redecorated Rutherford were named after members of the school council and others who were involved in the school in some way.

Morse, Collins, Arnold, Walker, Wright, Mulvey, Howell, Fitzgerald were some of the names used and each girl would anxiously look out for her name and where she was to sleep at the beginning of the school year. Bad luck if you were on matron’s side or in the dormitory above Miss Glover’s bedroom (before the Headmistresses residence was built).

After Miss Appel’s untimely death in November 1953, the school was left in shock as she had worked hard to build a flourishing school. The deputy Mrs Thomas took on the task of running the school, ‘a loyal and true friend of both Marsden and Miss Appel’.

Miss Margaret Glover came as the Headmistress in 1955 and remained until 1974. To many people, she ‘was Marsden’. Over the next 20 years, Marsden saw many changes. The introduction of the Wyndham Scheme saw the need for new classrooms, mixed classes with All Saints’, as well as new facilities such as a swimming pool,

library and a headmistresses’ cottage. There were interschool visits, purchase of a cattle stud, a Miss Marsden Competition, a visit from the Duke of Edinburgh to present the Duke of Edinburgh gold awards to the 15 girls from Marsden, a riding school program, Safari trips to Central Australia with the boys from The Scots School, a charity Walkathon and many other events leading up to the Jubilee Year 1975.

The last headmistress Mrs Kate Chivers was previously a teacher and then senior mistress and had been at Marsden from 1965 so she had earned the respect and admiration of the girls and staff by her involvement in school affairs. Her Headship was short-lived as Marsden was too close in the early days of 1977 because to falling enrolments and indirectly ‘as a result of All Saints’ going co-educational’ in 1976.

Despite moves by the Parents and Friends Association of Marsden School to keep the school open and ‘to operate it by restructuring the responsible authority’ the Diocese of Bathurst would “not accept responsibility of such a proposal”. The claim that the Diocesan authorities were ’sacrificing Marsden to save All Saints’ College’ was ‘unfounded and untrue’ and the amalgamation of the two schools would benefit all involved. It was said, “there are many benefits both for parents and girls which will arise from this amalgamation…….in class sizes, variety of subjects and activities, fee...”

The amalgamation took place at the beginning of the second term in 1977 and the school “will be known as ‘All Saints’ College (incorporating Marsden School)’ and will be conducted on the All Saints’ site”.

The next year saw many challenges faced by the combined councils, as with the amalgamation came the need for more classrooms, girls’ boarding accommodation, sufficient additional staff to cater for the increased numbers and subjects as well as the necessity to produce a balanced operating budget.

The headmaster of All Saints’ Mr Dan Massey said in his report, “everyone connected with the school had undergone a period of extreme stress …parents… apprehensive, students confused…staff exhausted by the huge task of reorganization”. He continued “in spite of all these difficulties …we can look forward to the future with confidence.”

COVID-19 Update - Keeping our College Community safe Dear Parents and Carers, It gives me great pleasure to advise you that the NSW Government has further rolled back COVID-19 restrictions for schools and that we have implemented those changes here at Scots All Saints already. Whilst this is great news, it’s still important to exercise caution. Please remember that Staff and Students with even the mildest of symptoms including fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, loss of taste, or loss of smell must not attend school or work and should get tested and self-isolate until they return a negative COVID-19 test result and send that through to the College. Those who don’t have a COVID-19 test are not permitted to return to school for ten days and must be symptom free for at least the last three days before returning. Students who suffer from Hay Fever, colds and other illnesses with similar symptoms to that of COVID-19 are still required to get tested and return a negative test result. Where the student is still experiencing symptoms after ten days, it is necessary to provide a doctors’ certificate stating that the symptoms are normal for the student and their condition. Please remember that we are required to send any student with COVID-19 symptoms home until they satisfy the above criteria.

As per the updated advice from NSW health, we are now permitted to do the following: • P&F meetings and other gatherings of parents and/or community members for school events (such as working bees) can proceed. All participants must continue to comply with the gathering limits prescribed by the Public Health Orders. Physical distancing and hygiene measures must be adhered to at all times.

• All visitors to a school site must comply with sign-in arrangements. This includes the requirement to sign in via our QR code system when you attend a sanctioned event or when you attend the uniform shop.

• The College can welcome parents and carers to attend school sporting events and activities, whether indoors or outdoors. Please make sure you sign in using the QR Codes available. One parent or carer per child at this time.

• Students can mix together across year groups, or other cohorts for all school related activities.

• School orientation programs can continue.

• There are no recommended limits on the number of performers in singing groups, including for in-class educational activities such as group repetition, chanting, recitation, or singing activities.

• Musical groups including bands and ensembles are permitted in well-ventilated spaces or outdoor areas.

Students and staff must comply with the Safe Health Practices infection control requirements.

• During solo and group singing, chanting and rapping events, a distance of 5 metres between themselves and any person they are facing, including staff, students and audience members is to be maintained where practicable.

• Field trips, excursions and camps to Victoria, Queensland and ACT can continue where interstate border requirements permit.
