A conversation with the Head of College

Mr John Weeks Staying Positive It has been an extremely tumultuous week for all communities as we have received multiple directives from the government which restrict lifestyle and daily routines in unprecedented ways. We have been bombarded with so much negativity that it is understandable that we could be feeling a little anxious.

So let’s hear some good news and let’s fight back that anxiety with some positivity to seek some balance. Here are some things to think about: 1. Everyone in the Scots All Saints College community is ‘coronavirus free’. No one is, at this time, unwell.

2. Outside, right now, the students are filing into the school grounds. They are happy, laughing. Some are passing around a rugby ball. There are handball games going on. It’s all normal.

3. When I announced that our boarding houses would be temporarily closed as a precautionary measure following the directive that students could be in ‘lockdown’ – cruise-ship style for up to 14 days, the response was awesome.

4. Boarder parents responded immediately, dropped everything and supported the decision to avoid the possibility of their children living in lockdown.

5. Day student parents have come to the rescue offering temporary accommodation near town. Some have offered to set up small teaching / learning centres in country towns.

This is Scots All Saints at its best!

6. The government has, following our recommendations through the Association of Independent Schools, revoked the ‘lockdown’ provision which was to apply to the coronavirus infection in boarding houses.

7. Any coronavirus illness identified in boarding school will be dealt with applying the same protocols as a day school. Great news. Boarding as normal!

8. School is, as always, a safe and happy place to be. Our students’ perspective, happy engagement with each other and a reassuring staff, is the positive infection we all need to balance the negative.

As we head into next week with all its unknowns, I encourage everyone to embrace what is before us right now while at the same time considering the ‘what ifs’ in a thoughtful and balanced way.

Let’s harness the positive power of our wonderful community.

Let's fight back - prepare for future shock We have seen the many curve balls that the coronavirus has delivered in a short period of time yet we have proven that we can stand strong to support each other when we need to. Through the various decisions and actions implemented this week, as a College community, we are better prepared to navigate this journey together to maintain any potential impact from COVID-19 - all the while ensuring continuity of learning and connection for our students.

The precautionary and temporary measures taken by the College, to ensure the safety of our boarders earlier in the week was received positively by the school community. Day student parents have rallied around our boarding community offering temporary accommodation in their homes with their families so boarders could continue to join classes. Some have even offered to set up small teaching and learning centres in country towns to support students away from school. Teachers and staff have maintained connections to their students through online learning tools, resources provided in packs and regular conversations.

We have been immensely proud to be part of the College community in this difficult time. People have been incredibly supportive and caring.

We are extending our gratitude to our families that so kindly looked after our boarders this week so that they could continue to attend school.

To be prepared for whatever the future holds, we would like to help facilitate the connection between boarders with local day student families who are willing to ‘Adopt a Boarder’ into their home.

Already we have had a large responses to this program and we would like to keep this register going.

The College will maintain a register of families willing to either take the opportunity for their boarder child/ children to stay with a local family or those day families who have generously offered to ‘Adopt a Boarder’.

Welcome back to our boarders We want to celebrate our boarding community - their friendship, their love of learning and their resilience in the face of so many challenges in recent times (drought, bushfire and now a pandemic virus!)

Student Wellbeing Mr Tom van Gend Head of Student Wellbeing K-12

The situation that has developed during the past couple of weeks – and that continues to develop day-by-day – is unprecedented in my time as a teacher. In my thirty years in schools, I have never experienced a situation whereby we are denied the privilege of working directly with the students with whom we constantly look forward to sharing our daily lives.

A lot of time and planning has gone into ensuring that the academic aspects of College life will continue, whatever the circumstances. It is also important that we continue to ensure that the wellbeing of our young people is safeguarded. With this in mind, I have included below some information that I hope may be of some use to parents in the coming weeks. These strategies are very much in keeping with the 'BounceBack' and 'Achieve' social and emotional learning wellbeing programs that form part of our commitment to educating the 'whole' child.

I would also like to take this opportunity to assure all families that the College remains a strong community that will continue to work together through the current uncertainties. All of our staff remain fully committed to caring for all of our students in the days and weeks ahead. Our thoughts are with those students who are not able to be on campus for various reasons, and we look forward to their return as soon as possible.

In the midst of all of the cancellations and postponements that must occur at present, it remains important for us all to seek out even small rewards and uplifting activities that remind us that life is to be celebrated, and that the future is to be anticipated.

Anxiety Anxiety is part of our survival instinct. When we’re faced with a threatening situation, our brains and bodies respond by kicking into safety mode. Our adrenalin starts pumping, helping us get ready to escape the danger.

However, some people, including children, react more quickly or intensely to situations they find

threatening, or find it harder to get their anxious feelings under control. Some kids also perceive the world to be scarier or more dangerous than others.

What is ‘normal’ anxiety in kids?

Fearful and anxious behaviour is common in children – especially as they come across new situations and experiences. Most children learn to cope with different fears and worries.

However, they may need some extra support when: • they feel anxious more than other children of a similar age • anxiety stops them participating in activities at school or socially • anxiety interferes with their ability to do things that other children their age can do • their fears and worries seem out of proportion to the issues in their life.

How anxiety affects children As well as affecting how kids feel, anxiety can have an effect on their thinking. They perceive the fear or danger they’re worried about to be much greater than it actually is. Thinking about the situation makes them more worried and tense.

Kids experiencing anxiety may come up with their own strategies to try and manage distressing situations.

This often involves trying to avoid the situation or having a parent or other adult deal with it for them.

While this works in the short term, avoiding the fearful situation makes it more likely that they’ll feel anxious and be unable to manage it next time. As a result, they can find it harder to cope with everyday stresses at home, school and in social settings.

Anxiety can also result in physical symptoms such as sleeplessness, diarrhoea, stomach aches and headaches (sometimes referred to as somatic complaints). Other symptoms may include irritability, difficulty concentrating and tiredness. continued page 4

Strategies to support anxious children When kids have anxious thoughts or feelings, a common response from the adults in their lives is to step in and solve the problem.

By helping children avoid scary situations, you’re reinforcing and fuelling their anxiety. They’re also missing out on opportunities to develop coping skills and prove to themselves they can deal with the anxious thought or feeling next time it comes up.

The best thing you can do for your child is to help them learn how to cope with anxiety.

Some strategies to try 1. Start by slowing down Encourage your child to take some slow, deep breaths to calm the physical effects of anxiety. Practice together by breathing in for three seconds, holding for three seconds, then out for three. Once they’re feeling a bit calmer, you can talk through what’s worrying them.

2. Make time to worry Setting aside some designated time to deal with worries can stop anxious thoughts from taking over. Try creating a daily ritual called ‘worry time’, and encourage children to draw or write down whatever’s bothering them. You can make the activity a bit more fun for younger kids by decorating a ‘worry box’ or building a ‘worry wall’ out of post-its. When the time is up – after 10 to 15 minutes – shut the worries up in the box or tear them off the wall and say goodbye to them for the day.

3. Encourage positive thinking Kids with anxiety often get stuck on the worst-case scenario or ‘what ifs’ in any situation. You can help them shift these thinking patterns by: • reminding them of times they’ve dealt with similar issues in the past and how things worked out OK; • helping them to challenge the scary thought with facts and evidence; • make a plan for how they’ll respond if things don’t go as they’d like.

4. Have a go Anxious kids often worry about making mistakes or not having things perfect. This can lead to them avoiding situations or activities – they’d rather sit out than get it wrong. Emphasise giving new things a try and having fun over whether something’s a success or failure (or better still…not a success – yet).

5. Model helpful coping Don’t just tell your child how to overcome emotions – show them. When you get anxious or stressed, verbalise how you’re coping with the situation: “This looks a bit scary, but I’ll give it a go.” And hey, you might even knock off one of your own fears.

6. Help your child take charge Think about what you can do to make your child feel like they have some control over the situation. Increasing their sense of control will naturally lessen the feeling of being ‘helpless’ in the situation.

7. Be upfront about scary stuff Lots of kids have worries about death, war, terrorism or things they see on the news. This is all really normal. Talk through their fears and answer any questions truthfully.

Don’t sugar-coat the facts – try and explain what’s happening in a way that puts their fears in perspective.

8. And finally, check your own behaviour Kids pick up all sorts of signals from the adults in their lives, so have a think about the messages you’re sending.

Over-protective family members can inadvertently reinforce children’s fears that the world is a dangerous place where everything can hurt you. Similarly, parents who ‘over-help’ are subconsciously telling their kids that they can’t do anything without adult support.

If you’re prone to ‘helicoptering’, try taking a step back and waiting next time before you jump in. It can be hard seeing your child distressed, but figuring things out for themselves is an important step in building resilience.

If anxiety is getting in the way of your child enjoying life, it’s time to seek support. Don’t leave it and assume things will get better on their own. Seeking help early for your child is the best thing you can do. (taken from Beyond Blue)

Hints for reducing your child’s anxiety about the coronavirus.

• Take time to talk with your child or teen about the COVID-19 outbreak. Answer questions and share facts about COVID-19 in a way that your child or teen can understand.

• Reassure your child or teen that they are safe. Let them know it is ok if they feel upset. Share with them how you deal with your own stress so that they can learn how to cope from you.

• Limit your family’s exposure to news coverage of the event, including social media. Children may misinterpret what they hear and can be frightened about something they do not understand.

• Try to keep up with regular routines. If your child is not able to be at school, create a schedule for learning activities and relaxing or fun activities.

• Be a role model. Take breaks, get plenty of sleep, exercise, and eat well. Connect with your friends and family members.

From the P&F Mr Grant Baker P&F President

Parents and Friends – Now is the time to support each other No doubt you have been keeping up to date with John Weeks’ updates on COVID-19.

Please ensure you remain informed in this everchanging landscape.

I wish to recognise the College in light of the difficult but decisive actions it is taking, based upon advice from the Government. It was sad to hear of the decision to close the boarding houses, but I completely understand why this was needed in the event of a ‘lockdown’.

The events of this week have been extremely stressful and challenging, especially for our boarders and their families. Please remember, we all stand together as a community in this. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our day student families, who very quickly offered to accommodate boarding children, ensuring they can continue to attend school, and keep their lives as normal as possible. It is a very clear sign of our close-knit community, and from this we will only grow stronger, as individuals and together.

I was delighted today to see the College seeking to help support this organic response by our families, in preparing a permission form to enable a register to be established to help keep our children in school. I urge you to initially consider your own circumstances, and then how you may be able to help support this great initiative so we can be prepared for the future.

It is such a shame that extra-curricular activities have had to be cancelled across the College, including our sporting, arts, debating, music, cadets, equestrian and cattle and school camps, all of which our children work so hard or were looking forward to attending. However, in light of the risks involved the Association is supportive of the Colleges actions. We recognise that many of these decisions have been brought by directives from the Government and in response to the various sporting and industry associations at all level.

On a positive note, it was fantastic to see our children proudly represent the College at last weekend's Blayney Show. Just in time before the government’s increased controls on public events. I personally got a great buzz from seeing the event take place at the new Central West Equestrian and Livestock Centre, which my own staff have recently overseen the completion of.

'Annie – The Musical' The cancellation of Annie - the Musical would have been especially difficult for everyone involved. I know how hard everyone has worked to deliver, what was going to be, a first-class presentation.

I know firsthand from my own experiences in a school musical (all those years ago), the physical demands of all those weekends and late nights of practice, but to have the production cancelled at the twelfth hour must have had a huge emotional toll.

Please remind those involved that their efforts have not gone unrecognised. My family, similar to many others were looking forward to seeing all that talent on stage. It was only at last week's P&F meeting we approved sponsorship for the event.

Parents and Friends Meetings The College has recommended that the Association postpone its meetings until further notice, in accordance with social distancing directives. Our next meeting is not scheduled until Week 2 Term 2, but at this point in time it is considered prudent to provide the College community with early advice of this.

This is a shame as we had just started to receive the involvement of new members of the College family at our meetings.

We had also, only just started investigating the use of online technology to enable families to attend meetings remotely. This remains a work in progress, and I look forward to trialing this later in the year.

College Community Event Many of you may have noticed on the College Calendar, a new community event proposed to be run on 13 September this year.

It was only last week, we provided the College with a proposed format for this event, that we hoped would be a signature event on the calendar.

Unfortunately, such an event has long lead times, requires extensive planning and resources, and with the rapidly changing landscape in front of us at present, it has been decided to postpone the event.

The Association remains ready to support extra-curricular and other opportunities that may present themselves when we are able to be fully functional again. Subject to the next couple of months, perhaps it will be possible to undertake a smaller community event, that is more readily able to be delivered in a shorter time frame.

Perhaps an end of year Carols and Christmas Markets type event would work well? Your ideas would be welcomed Remember as a College Community we must work together to get through these trying times. Reach out to another parent, to see if they are ok, that’s all it takes.

Sport Mr Scott Gardner Head of Sport We can celebrate the numerous individual and team success and selections of our students in a number of teams since my last report.

Benjamin Cant ISA 1st XI Cricket Representative Benjamin has captained the College 1st XI team this season and shown wonderful leadership, enthusiasm and dedication to this sport. His performances for the ISA Representative team were of a high standard and reflected in his all round ability as a cricketer.

The team finished runners up, which was a sterling effort. As a direct result of the team’s performance, our three girls were selected in the AICES team to contest the NSWCIS Hockey Championships: Bridget Ellis AICES Opens, Clare Mawhood AICES Opens and U16s and Lily Kable AICES Opens and U16s.

ISA Girls Touch The 2019/20 ISA Touch Competition proved a very successful one for the College. We fielded two Junior and two Senior touch squads in this competition. The fixtures were played as Gala day or individual fixtures against the other ISA Schools. At the conclusion of the season all four teams had secured spots in the Semi-Finals held at St Pauls Grammar School, Cranbrook.

This tournament allows the AICES schools to flex their overall strength in this very popular sport. The WAS team played with enthusiasm and congratulations to Baxter Williams who gained selection in the AICES Basketball Squad to compete at the NSWCIS trials.

Baxter has developed into a fine player who has worked diligently on his game. He has been an integral member of the College 1st V team and was a significant contributor to the WAS teams performances at the Championships.

Success for cattle team at Blayney Show Congratulations to the cattle show team taking out Grand Champion Steer along with Reserve Champion Steer at the Blayney Show - strong competition this year with 50 high quality steers!

Waste Free Recess and Lunch Day

Students from the Junior School and Middle School enjoyed learning how to prevent landfill and save costs with needless packaging on the food they bring to school for recess and lunch.

We hope to organise a Waste Free Food Day across our campuses once a Term.

We encourage parents, students and the local community to join us to consider going 'waste free' on a more regular basis to help protect our environment.

Year 10 iSTEM study bridge trusses in action

“It would seem that trusses hold up the world!"

The Year 10 iSTEM class saw trusses in action on the old Denison Bridge, and supporting the Rocket Street bridge over the railway line.

On the way, Mr Germech pointed out trusses on a gantry crane in the railway yard, the top of the old gasholders in Russell Street, and the roof truss factory near the school.

The group also gained some understanding of how bridges are designed to cope with movement caused by heavy traffic, and by expansion and contraction in the very large range of temperatures that occur in Bathurst.

The group consisted of Tien Che Ding, Matthew Hoipo, Letao Huang, Courtney Roberts, Khampaseut Souksamlanh.

Lather soap and rub hands for at least 15 seconds, including:

Apply soap to hands.

Rinse hands with water.
