How we respond to the passing of the Queen will depend on many factors. Those of us who are children of the 1950’s have ‘grown up’ with her there – we all sang “God Save the Queen” at school and at the end of the movies and also at the end of ‘The Beatles’ concert in Sydney in the 1960’s. Yes, we Timesdid!have changed, younger people will have very different experiences and views – we have been singing “Advance Australia Fair” since 1974. But, the Queen has always been there – on our coins, bank notes, EIIR is marked on post offices and in many government buildings. Naval vessels begin with HMAS (Her Majesty’s Australian Ship).

Changes due to the public holiday on Thursday, 22 September 2022.
Next Thursday, 22 September, has been declared a national public holiday to acknowledge the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. As such, the College Term will close for students on Wednesday, 21 September, at 3:20 pm.

different reasons. A couple interviewed this week were asked the question, “Why are you so sad?” Their response was, “the passing of the Queen causes us to reflect not just on her life, but on our lives and reminds us of those in our own family we have lost – our grandparents, our mums and dads…” Our grief is not just for her, but for those we personally love – who are no longer with us.
Elizabeth II’s passing is significant for many reasons but the sadness evoked in so many reminds us of our deep connection, our emotional attachment to each other too.
Remembering Queen Elizabeth II
A conversation with the Head of College

As parents, we often find ourselves asking our children to do things. Whether it is tidying their room, helping get the dinner or perhaps sitting down to do some homework. Our hope, over time, is that our children will start to do these things without being told. We hope that one day we will come home to a bedroom that is in a half-decent state, a meal prepared or possibly some study
this journey is our collective work, as educators and parents, to develop initiative in our children so throughout life, they choose to do what is right and good without being told.
The 20th Century inventor, Orlando Aloysius Battista, once said, “Initiative is to success what a lighted match is to a candle”. In other words, without initiative, there is no success.
At home and school, we aim to create safe spaces where students can confidently give things a go, take small steps forward, discover passions and, in time, demonstrate greater and larger amounts of initiative.
start to show initiative in an area, it is wonderful to witness it. It does not happen all at once, and for some children, it takes longer than for others, but over time through encouragement, modelling, rituals and routines, little pockets of initiative begin to emerge.
As a College, our Mission is to develop our children into successful men and women with a firm foundation for life built on the gospel of KeyChrist.to
This weekend, I hope many students take the initiative to get behind teams playing in grand final games, and I look forward to seeing many families on the sidelines on Saturday if you can make it.

Year 6 delighted the Junior School with their initiative in organising a Fun Day last Friday. Thompson House boarders delighted their fellow boarders by showing up in large numbers to support them at sport last weekend. About fifty students rolled up yesterday to audition for the 2023 Senior School Musical - The Pirates of Penzance, and many senior students have been making the most of every minute they can get in the Library before and after school as they prepare for current and upcoming examinations. Countless students have also continued to introduce themselves to me with a smile and a handshake, a simple but not always universally practised courtesy and initiative.

A message from our new Head of College
ROARTHE From the Chaplain
The Queen: The end of an era and the beginning of an eternal one.
As a boy in infants school I can remember singing God Save the Queen at every assembly up until Advance Australia Fair replaced it in the 1970s. I can also remember Queen Elizabeth’s influence on my U10 Soccer Grand Final. After a scoreless game, the penalty shoot-out was even, so the referee brought out a 20-cent coin with her majesty’s image. Queen Elizabeth was to decide the winner. The referee flicked her image, the other side called “heads”, and she landed smiling upon their ‘lucky’ victory. From that time on, I have always been quite partial to the republican movement!
her passing, I now realise that I am old. As we enter into a new period of history, most of my memories, certainly of my youth, are not just contained within the period of the last century but rather, more specifically, during the era and reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
Rev. Michael Bennett Chaplain

teachings of Christ and my own personal accountability before God provide a framework in which I try to lead my life."
From a distance, I have admired her Christian commitment and how heavily it impacted her approach to leadership. She has made many comments about her steadfast faith over the years, expressing: "For me, the
This week, I have been caught off-guard by the emotions I am feeling about the Queen's passing. I even shed a tear the other day. I’ve spent some time reflecting on why the death of the Queen has emotionally hit me.
Senior School Campus Senior, Boarding (Years 7-12) 4173 O’Connell Road BATHURST NSW 2795 Junior School Campus Preparatory School, Junior (Years K 6) 70 Eglinton Road BATHURST NSW 2795 02 6331 3911 scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.auconnect@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au
The Queen's passing is sad in itself, but I don’t shed a tear because of any of my personal reflections above, but more, I think, for myself in the somewhat shocking realisation that life is passing by so quickly. The death of the Queen is the sudden end of an era. She was part of the landscape of the 20th century. Her life stretched through many major events of that time, and she didn’t just live through these events, she also played a key role in many of them.
The scriptures remind us that “our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die.” (Psalm 103:15). I, too, shall pass one day, and like Queen Elizabeth, my life shall transition into the great eternal Kingdom of God. My prayer is that you shall join, Elizabeth and many other followers of Christ in this magnificent era of the Eternal King, Jesus Christ. Within this era, and his reign, there shall be no more tears, grief, death or sorrow. Rather, this eternal era shall have no end. Praise be to God! Amen.
What prompted this idea that an era has come to an end was a biography that I am currently reading on Rev John Stott. He was a Christian evangelist who worked with Billy Graham, wrote many books and served as one of the Queen's chaplains. In this book (and in many other political, military, and sporting 20th century biographies I have read over the years), the Queen and stories about her are shared. For me, in many respects, she was the glue that bound many of these great people and events together into one Withstory.

In late 2019, during the peak of the last drought, the volume of water being released from the Winburndale Dam was insufficient to maintain the health of the river and contributed to a local extinction of the platypus and rakali. As little as 0.75 mega litres were being released each day during the drought. The ABC reported that during the recent drought, Bathurst Regional Council did not release enough environmental releases as it needed the dam to provide a backup for the town’s water supply. I’d like to congratulate the group on all of their work so far and hope they can raise awareness of this issue.

Our assemblies last week were absolute rippers! In particular, the 9-12 assembly where our Year 12 students took over and demonstrated some amazing talents. Our College Captains Lauren and Hamish delivered a heartwarming and well-constructed speech on overcoming challenges, and they encouraged the students and staff on the importance of always remaining positive when things get tough. We also saw some well-delivered reports from our Year 12 Visual Arts and Design & Technology students. They thoughtfully reflected on the journey that they experienced whilst working on their major works and expressed how relieved they were to have successfully completed their projects. We also had some outstanding music pieces that kept the entire audience entertained. The outstanding leadership continued on Wednesday this week with our Chapel Prefects delivering some excellent reflections on Christianity, where they answered some of the tricky questions that students had put forward about God and faith. They answered honestly and provided sound links to the teachings in the bible. The Year 12 boys also helped lead our hymns with minimal musical accompaniment. The standard has well and truly been set for the students from our younger years to follow in the future. Well done Year 12.

Why should we value reading?
The nature of education can often cause a schism between different subjects, at least in the minds of students. They are herded from one side of the school to the other, and subjects are compartmentalised. It is with this notion that I am often asked how I feel about other subjects and disciplines. Students are amazed to discover I have a deep and profound love of Mathematics and the Sciences, ‘but you’re an English teacher’, they claim! Well, it is all linked and all part of the holistic approach to education, one always feeds into the other and vice versa. Hence, our readers this week are two Mathematics teachers, brilliant as they are in this field, they still immerse themselves in the joy of reading as much as I love SOHCAHTOA.

If you have a favourite author, who is it and why?
Reading lets us escape into another world that is only limited by the combination of the author's ideas and our imagination. Reading helps to develop our understanding of language conventions and then, in turn, improves our own writing ability as we are able to recognise incorrect grammar and style.
Toss up between Matthew Reilly (who doesn't like a bit of action and adventure on steroids?) and Raymond E Feist (His work over decades has produced many novels based on the worlds of Midkemia).

were plans to build another boarding house to the same design symmetrically on the southern side of “Karralee”. However, these never eventuated. The rear section of Cooerwull was added in 1967. The Old Cooerwullians paid £70 in 1953 to have Andrew Brown’s coat of arms from the Cooerwull academy placed at the entrance of Cooerwull House when the former Academy building was taken over by the De La Salle brothers for a Catholic school in There1951.
With enrolments having fallen to around 230 in 1997, Cooerwull was no longer needed as a boarding house but took on a new life as the Junior School when it opened at the beginning of 1997. At the end of 1997, the last boarders moved out of the upstairs area as the growth of the Junior School saw the top floor dormitories become classrooms. Mr Simon Dundon was the last Housemaster of the boarding house. His wife Cath, who commuted across town to her job at All Saints' College' is back in Cooerwull this year in the Stage 4 Team Leaders’ office. With the integration of Scots and All Saints, the Junior School moved to the old All Saints Campus. The English Department moved into Cooerwull, along with the Health Centre, and more recently, downstairs the Year 7 and 8 locker rooms.
