A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

Improving traffic flows at All Saints Campus - relief is coming! Those of us who have tried to drive out of All Saints Campus of an afternoon know how busy this has become. Over the past few months, we have been discussing these issues with NSW Transport, Bathurst Council, Traffic consultants and the local bus companies. After a great deal of discussion, a multi-point plan has been developed to improve traffic flows while maintaining the highest levels of safety for our children. The first stage is to remove buses from entering and exiting the grounds. Approval has been sought from NSW Transport for all local buses to drop off and pick up from the dedicated bus stop outside the College grounds. All students will be dropped off and picked up from here with all buses heading west to complete their school runs. Staff will meet students off the buses each morning and supervise them leaving each afternoon from inside the College fenced area behind the bus shelter. You will see there is a new pathway being developed for students. A new crossing near the College gates will be attended by Scots Campus Pre-K, Boarding (Years 5-12), Senior School (Years 9-12) 4173 O’Connell Road BATHURST NSW 2795

a traffic warden to ensure safety for children heading to and from the buses. This will start in a week or so. Other changes will take place to improve parking and widening of the entry/exit gates to the school. Please be aware of these changes and take care … “there’s always kids about”. We will advise of a change in bus drop off and pick ups once final approval comes from NSW Transport. Interschool Sports Update There has been considerable discussion between NSW Health, the Independent Schools Association (ISA) and individual schools concerning interschool competitive sports. The advice is that schools do not compete with those from out of region e.g. Sydney where there are many coronavirus hotspots. Instead, where possible schools should stay ‘local’ and avoid such travel to or through other regions. The ISA rugby is one sport impacted by this and the proposed competition is now cancelled. Our sports staff are now working to establish a competition with our regional colleagues. Please see page 8 for more information. Lithgow Campus Pre-K–Year 6 1 Col Drewe Drive LITHGOW NSW 2790

Pastoral Programs in Term 3 Across the College

Year 11: Student Leadership

Year 11 students are undertaking a variety of activities this term that have been developed 'in house'. These activities work in parallel with the selection and appointment of the new student leadership group and aim to increase leadership skills in all members of our Senior Year in 2021. Students are currently working with the Year 8 group as part of the orientation process K – 6: Bounce Back to prepare them to enter the Senior School on the Scots Campus next year. From the P&F Mr Grant Baker

Feasting with Lions Cookbook

P&F President

It was only a month ago that we thought we may be able to return to face to face meetings but this has not been the case - with the unfolding situation in Victoria and restrictions in NSW starting to tighten again. Despite all of this we held our Term 3 Week 2 meeting last night via Zoom. It was great to see everyone again, and to be joined by Rebecca McCudden, from one of our boarding families. We also had a couple of apologies including from our representative Renee Difranco from the Lithgow Campus. I hope we can continue to welcome other parents to our meetings by Zoom or Face to Face into the future. Campus Updates Mr Jackman provided us with an update from the All Saints Campus, with some notable highlights being recent building works - and the recent Year 7 Experience Day that saw many students spend an exciting day seeing what opportunities there are for them next year. What was great to hear was that new enrolments were secured in the days following. The work undertaken by staff showcasing the College was apparently fantastic and well received. We heard of plans to amend traffic arrangements in the Middle School carpark to ensure the safety of everyone in the area. Ms Leaf noted a further increase in both domestic and international students attending the Senior Campus, which continues to prove what a wonderful environment our children are provided to learn and grow within.

Remember you can still grab your very own copy of The Scots School Jubilee Cookbook from 1996, Feasting with Lions. This collector's item can be purchased from the Association for just $10 a copy. To purchase a copy simply deposit your fee into the P & F bank account: Scots All Saints College P & F BSB: 032814 Account: 506736 Please ensure you use your surname as a reference on the transaction. Once you've completed your transaction email your remittance to Natalie Cranston at natalie@cranstons.com.au to arrange pick up. You might find some of your own recipes or artwork in there. The Coffee Club The Association has decided to provide funding to 'The Coffee Club' for coffee beans and cups, and for the cost of servicing of the machine over Terms 2 and 3 2020. Future Events Unfortunately, with the unfolding situation in Victoria and NSW, it is starting to become clear that we will not be able to hold an end of year event. Despite this the Committee remains enthusiastic about some form of Christmas fundraiser that might help bring us together in a virtual manner, rather than face to face. As we determine this, we shall get information out to everyone.

Our Year 12 cohort is currently preparing for trial exams, for which we wish them well.

Remember Association meetings, are generally held on the Wednesday of Week 2 and Week 7 each term, and we welcome others attending. The College website and The Roar continue to provide these dates, and as we look toward our Term 3 Week 7 meeting, we will update you on what format this will take, and details on the venue.

It is amazing to think we are now rapidly progressing toward the end of the two-year uniform transition period, and 2021 will see our students only in the new College uniform, further promoting the identity of the College.

Please keep safe and well, keep in touch and remember if the P&F Committee, can help, please drop me a line at president.sascpfa@outlook.com

Active Afternoons – Sport Training Update We thank the Junior and Middle school students for their support with transitioning to the new term of Active Afternoons. The change of activities in readiness for the winter sports season has been a success. The Senior school students continued with their activities from Term 2 and continue to enjoy the physical activity. We thank the students, coaches and parents for their support with getting our weekend sports program going. There has been a great deal of coordination and cooperation with getting the players registered and prepared (uniforms, etc.). Based on observations and feedback from the weekend, the students enjoyed getting back into competition. Winter Sport Update – COVID procedures We remind players and parents that we need to abide by the COVID procedures for community sport associations. Whilst hockey, soccer and netball all have slight differences in their procedures for the venues that are used on the weekends, the general COVID restrictions are the same. DO NOT ATTEND sport fixtures if you are: • unwell or had any flu-like symptoms, or • been in contact with a known case of COVID19 in the past 14 days, or • been overseas or exposed to someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, or • any sudden loss of smell or loss of taste, or • are at a high risk from a health perspective, including the elderly and those with preexisting medical heath conditions.

JS & MS Sport Mrs Kay Nelson Coordinator of Sport K-8

There was a noticeable buzz around Bathurst last Saturday morning with families moving about filling car parks of local sporting grounds. Of course the sidelines of sporting grounds were less congested as parents complied with the Covid-19 spectating restrictions. I would like to thank our community for observing the protocols that were sent out specifically for each sport. Whilst the local associations are encouraging players to 'Get in, Play, and Get out’, I encourage all students to begin their warm-up at home prior to arriving at the courts/fields to avoid injury. There are 37 Scots All Saints College teams playing in the Rugby, Netball, Hockey and Soccer competitions and whilst it is going to be a shorter season than normal, I think our students will squeeze every moment of enjoyment from it. Students in the Middle School and Junior School who are not involved in a core sport this term are enjoying the other Active Afternoon activities, including Dance, Table Tennis, Strength and Conditioning and Mountain Biking.

Netball Our netballers enjoyed their first game of the season with some pleasing results. A reminder to players that you must sign into the netball complex by filling out a form at the entry points. The SASC Tigers and SASC Leopards are playing in a NetSetGo competition that is focused on developing game skills without the pressure of competition. Their coaches were very proud of the effort that players contributed towards their first game. The Tigers and Leopards match report. Netball Team

Successful rugby training and skills development day The anticipation and relief was evident as the boys arrived for Rugby last weekend. The shackles were about to be released. Saturday’s training and skill development day proved very beneficial for all the students who attended the session. After temperature checks the boys commenced the day with a dynamic warm-up on the Old Boys Field prior to breaking up into their respective teams. The addition of the Year 6, 7 and 8 students certainly swelled our ranks on the day. The enthusiastic and positive approach to the skills tabloid emphasized the importance of providing this physical outlet for the boys again. With a mixture of agility, breakdown, tackling and passing drills the players completed the activities diligently and with confidence. The Rugby coaches enjoyed the camaraderie and positive vibe that was evident amongst the boys throughout the morning. The Opens players successfully navigated the First XV trial to select the squad for 2020. The trial on the main oval proved to be a willing contest which allowed the lads to showcase their individual talents and teamwork skills. With another training day scheduled for this weekend further skills, team cohesion and development will be achieved. This decision to forgo travel out of area and hence not be involved in the ISA Division 2 Rugby competition previously was a difficult one to make. The College believes it is the right course of action to undertake during this Discussions with NSW Health and a review of guidelines and protocols highlighted the need for the College to consider not only our school community but also the wider Central West community to which we belong. Plans are underway to create a separate, modified Rugby season for the boys which will be locally based. An announcement will be forthcoming about this initiative and games will be circulated when a draw and dates have been finalised. Mr Scott Gardner, Head of Sport

Students study systems in Lithgow K-6 Lithgow began studying the concept of 'Systems' this week. We started off looking at the Solar System. Students have explored planets in the Solar System and today we experimented with a Solar Oven to see if we could boil water. While we did not quite make it we managed to get 300mL of water up to approx 75 degrees, in Lithgow, in winter, with a top of 14 degrees. The process involved students learning about places that require this simple technology to boil water for safe drinking water. We looked at the properties of materials we learned about last term and how they can be used. We wrote up our experiment in a 'systematically' correct way, recorded observations in a dot graph, ensured we used a fair test and made annotated diagrams. Students became SUPER scientists and mathematicians, who are aware of global needs and utilise available resources to meet them. Great job everyone!!

Our Year 7 and 8 boarders are enjoying their new space on All Saints Campus to live and learn closer to school. There has been much media attention lately about our new Middle School Boarding program with stories in the Sydney Morning Herald, The Land and other regional publications featuring quotes from Head of College, Mr John Weeks on this new supportive program for our younger students. With the increased interest in the program, students created this short video as a guide to help other students considering boarding for the first time understand what it may be like to be a boarder. COVID-19 Health precautions to keep our College and wider community safe What a difference a few weeks makes in these ‘COVID-19 times’! At the end of last term, the NSW community welcomed the easing of restrictions in time for the mid-year school holidays. Now, as we start Term 3, we are yet again faced with growing cases south of the border in Victoria and many ‘hot spot’ areas in Sydney. This remains a concerning time for us all. As a College we are monitoring the situation very closely and remaining vigilant with our College precautionary measures in place. Scots All Saints College has adopted a COVID-19 Health & Safety Protocol to manage any potential risk on our campuses. We trust that you are fully aware of the responsibilities we all have to contain this pandemic. Mrs Felicity Brown has been officially appointed as our COVID-19 College Marshall. Felicity will update these protocols and ensure we are well-briefed as new information comes to hand from NSW Health. To support our families, we plan to provide the College community with a COVID-19 Update letter weekly on a Tuesday and follow-up with any further messages in The Roar distributed weekly on a Thursday. Of course, any urgent information will be sent directly to parents. The COVID-Updates page on our website is also a great reference tool. Sports and other school activities As a College, we are carefully monitoring advice from government concerning the timetable for opening up student activities such as excursions, assemblies, interschool competitive sports and school camps. Until now, our sports programs have been conducted on our own campuses under our own strict controls. The College participates in competitive sports at the local community level including netball, soccer and hockey and, at the interschool (ISA) level, rugby. We rely on the local sporting associations to enforce safe health protocols and ask that you abide by the regulations at the games. Here are a few useful links with information that has been provided via email to the families with children in these College teams: Soccer https://footballnsw.com.au/return-to-play/ https://footballnsw.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Return-to-Play-Guidelines-FNSW-Level-C.pdf Netball http://bathurstna.nsw.netball.com.au/ Rugby A very successful rugby skills day was held with our teams on Scots Campus last Saturday. We thank the parents, staff and coaches for complying with the guidelines introduced for this event. The ISA competition is planned to begin next Saturday however, with a number of Sydney and ‘out of region’ independent schools involved, this competition is now under review. On behalf of our teachers and staff, I would like to express our gratitude to the College community for the way that you’ve supported these new initiatives. We understand that this is a difficult time but appreciate your understanding that the health and safety of our community must always come first.
