A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

What a difference 4 weeks makes! At the end of last term, we were all very hopeful that our communities were returning to normal operations. Here at the College we had been carefully monitoring advice from government concerning the timetable for opening up student activities such as excursions, assemblies, interschool competitive sports and school camps. With the changing nature of the coronavirus in Victoria and the emergence of clusters in NSW, these plans are now on hold as further assessments are made by NSW Health. Staying up to date With this situation rapidly changing, we will now resume our regular coronavirus updates each week. COVID-19 Health Marshall Additionally, in order to stay up to date on the need to protect our College, our Registered Nurse, Mrs Felicity Brown, has been formally appointed as our COVID-19 Health Marshall. Mrs Brown and her team will monitor, advise and communicate all matters concerning health practices at the College. Please see our protocols on page 10. Sports Until now, our sports programs have been conducted on our own campuses under our own strict controls. The College participates in competitive sports at the local community level and at the interschool (ISA) level. Community Sports We rely on the local sporting associations to enforce safe health protocols for each sport such as netball, hockey and soccer. Please abide by the regulations at the games. Interschool ISA sports There is only one sport where this occurs – Rugby. The ISA competition does not start until next week and the competition is now under review. There will be more information on this shortly. As information is forthcoming concerning any changes to the school operations we will let you know. Introducing Lucinda Wells – Head of Lyon-Marsden House Once a boarder herself, Lucinda Wells knows firsthand what it’s like to live and learn on campus and is passionate about creating a caring, supportive ‘home away from home’ for our students. As part of the Boarding House team here at Scots All Saints College, Lucinda has been developing boarding for the past 10 years at the College in various House management roles including Head of Thompson House and Head of Galloway House and previously in the All Saints’ College boarding team. We welcome Lucinda to her new role as the Head of the newly formed Lyon-Marsden House on All Saints Campus - the new home for our Middle School (Year 5-8) boy and girl boarders. Lucinda is delighted that a unique program for younger boarders has been established at Scots All Saints which aims to provide a tailored program to enable children to settle-in, socialise and get a head start to their learning before they start Senior School. “Boarding is a wonderful part of the fabric of our school and we have students from all backgrounds and cultures – city, country and overseas – who stay at the school.” “Middle School Boarding may be new for NSW but it is well-established in other parts of the world. In my earlier experience working in Middle School Boarding in the UK, I have seen how students can flourish in this learning environment as they grow in confidence, independence and build new skills such as being able to understand others points of view which can be valuable later in life,” Mrs Wells said. Lucinda is also a Teacher-Librarian on All Saints Campus so boarders can easily access her during the day if they a have any concerns or questions. A great partnership between parents and the Boarding staff is built as they care for students. “We are very fortunate here to have a great group of boarders that relate well to each other. Our Middle School Boarders now have their own large campus and can walk 5 minutes to classes from their boarding house. The friendships and connections are very special with the boys and girls you go to school with becoming part of your extended family which is lovely when you leave school.” As part of the Try US experience Day, a number of new Year 7 students were welcomed to the College today for a ‘boarding sleepover’. This is a great opportunity for them to try our facilities, make new friends and meet the teachers before they may join us in 2021. Performing Arts Academy news Welcome back to Term 3 and a special semester for our artists! Across this term we have some exciting plans for sharing our talented students with you from the Performing Arts Academy! During the break, I was intrigued to read that the Arts contribute over 100 billion dollars to our annual economy across the film, music and art sectors. It is a significant amount and an integral component for stability in the economy. Australian comedian, writer and actor, Luke McGregor stated that during these trying times “We do not need the Arts to survive but it does give us a reason to!” It is obvious that many of our students and our community acknowledge this reason and I hope you are using the arts to relax and enjoy those newfound home times! We welcome Miss Emily Turner from the Sydney Conservatorium who joins us as a Practicum Teacher for 9-weeks over the future semester. Emily brings a passion for all things music and has been running each morning in the frost! She says it is ‘slightly’ colder than Cronulla!! We also are very excited to welcome back Mrs Elizabeth Tamsitt from maternity leave. She will continue her engaging and fun Orff-Schulwerk music classes with Kindergarten through to year 5. All ensembles will resume from Week 2 across both campuses continuing to physical distance and safe practices to ensure the health of our students and staff. Students will begin preparation for our Digital Showcase to be 'live cats' later in the term. So, as you listen to music on a run, watch some Netflix or a movie… remember the Arts are a great reason to continue to care for each other in these times! I have thoroughly enjoyed Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit’s new album ‘Reunions.’ It is a superbly produced album so why not enjoy it one quiet night this coming week!! Junior School Mr Anthony Roohan Director of Junior School

Welcome to Term 3! I trust that our students enjoyed the extended break and are looking forward to an exciting term of learning. Throughout the break, many teachers have been busy updating their professional knowledge base. On Monday all our Junior School teachers took part in a professional learning day with the AIS (Association of Independent Schools) on Planning and Programming using the NSW PDHPE K-10 Syllabus. Teachers sequenced and planned units of work based on the new syllabus which is shaped by five propositions, organised into three content strands, with a focus on three PDHPE skill domains. The five propositions are informed by a strong evidence base to ensure that our PDHPE curriculum is contemporary and future-focused. The propositions guide teaching, learning and assessment. The propositions include: • Take a strength based approach • Value movement • Developing Health Literacy • Critical Inquiry Approach • Focus on educative purposes PE teachers worked alongside classroom teachers to ensure they were interrelating the three Strands: Health, Wellbeing and Relationships; Movement Skill and Performance; and Healthy, Safe and Active Lifestyles throughout these new units. On the final day of Term 2, several Junior School teachers updated their knowledge of THRASS and completed a Certificate 2 in THRASS- Foundation to Proficiency. Student Reports and Parent Teacher Interviews Parent/Teacher Interviews will be held for Kindergarten to Year 6 on Monday 27 July, Tuesday 28 July and Wednesday 29 July from 3:45 pm to 6:00 pm. Hopefully many of you used the Parent Teacher Online (PTO) booking system to book the interview times that suit you best. Interviews will be of 15 minutes in duration and will be held in your child’s classroom. The interviews will give you the opportunity to discuss

your child’s Semester 1 Report, their achievements, and any other matters or concerns you may have. Term Overviews Term Overviews will be distributed next week. These overviews will give you a good understanding of the learning and experiences that will take part in your child’s class this term. Seesaw With remote learning now finished, teachers have resumed uploading work to the class Seesaw accounts that were set up earlier in the year. Term 3 Sport So many of us love our football and netball and we love that its back, but we must all work together to stay safe. It was great to read and hear so many positive reports about our students from weekend games. To help ensure that football and netball can continue to operate and the appropriate safeguards are in place to reduce the risk of transmission, all players, parents, officials and spectators are required to comply with the COVID Safe practices that have been promoted in recent correspondence by the College and local associations.

Please drop off and pick up as normal at your preferred location and encourage your child to say goodbye at the gate and to meet you back at the gate in the afternoon. Pick up locations include the front lawn or the Stage 1 car park. Parents are asked not to gather on the Kemmis lawn near the Uniform Shop. Thank you for your on-going support with these procedures. Please see our full protocols on page 10 and 11. Mrs Parsons Leave Mrs Parson will be taking leave from her 4/5 day class this term. Her final day of the term will be Tuesday 11 August. Mrs Parsons will be replaced by the very experienced and familiar Mrs Liz Rolfe. Mrs Parsons will return to the class at the start of Term 4.

Holiday Improvements and Maintenance on the Junior and Middle School Campus During the holidays the College maintenance staff have been busy making our College facilities more comfortable and safe for our students. The change rooms, both male and female, in the Bickerdike Centre have been painted, have had new lighting and have new privacy partitions throughout both showers and toilets. This is a significant upgrade which will improve the function of this facility. In the Junior School a new staircase rail has been installed leading up to the Year 4 classrooms. These Year 4 classrooms have had walls removed making them twice as big inside and these rooms have been painted. There has been substantial work done in the Marsden and Lyon Boarding Houses which provide accommodation for the Middle School Boarding students. This includes both ground floor dorms painted, carpeted, new lighting installed and holland blinds fitted throughout Lyon House where the boys will be living. There has also been a furniture upgrade in Lyon House bringing it up to similar specifications to Marsden House. Lyon-Marsden Fire System installation with central monitoring and Marsden/Lyon boarding residences painted and cleaned. Significant new equipment in the All Saints dining hall to better cater for Middle School Boarding. New Students We welcome the following new students to the Scots All Saints College Junior and Middle Schools this term. William Kenny (Pre K 5 Day), Eleanor FlemingRivett (Year 1), Shelby Davey (Year 3), Tom Milgate (Year 3), Eliza Hatton (Year 6) and Grace Moore (Year 7). Parent Teacher Interviews Year 7 and 8 Parent Teacher Interviews have been held this week via Zoom in order to avoid having large numbers of people in a single room. These interviews provide a valuable opportunity for parents to touch base with their child’s teachers to discuss the Semester 1 reports. Year 5 and 6 Parent Teacher Interviews will be in Week 2 of term and will be face-to-face traditional style interviews as we will only have a couple of people in the classroom at a time. PE and Sport Students in the Middle School can continue to wear their College tracksuit with their PE uniform underneath to school on the days that they have PE and on Thursdays when they have Active Afternoons.

Senior School Ms Tracey Leaf Head of Scots Campus / Director of Senior School

On behalf of the staff I extend a warm welcome to all returning students and families. I trust that everyone had a safe and relaxing holiday break and are settling back into the routines of school life. I would also like to extend a special welcome to the three new students and families who have joined us this term in the Senior School. We look forward to getting to know you and wish you well as you settle into your new community. Temperature checks and handwashing Our regime of daily temperature checks are continuing this term. Students are reminded to thoroughly wash their hands and use the provided sanitiser throughout the day. Any student displaying even mild flu-like symptoms should not attend school.

our young people for an informal chat, to provide encouragement, to hear their concerns and plans and ensure that they continue to feel supported during these final important weeks of their formal schooling. Traffic congestion The increasing number of private vehicles parked along the front drive of an afternoon is causing significant issues for the buses and potentially placing our young people at risk. I would ask that parents either arrange to collect their students from the top visitor car park or delay pick-up until 3:45pm or later. Updating family records If you have changed address, email or phone numbers recently could you please notify the school through connect@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au

Encouraging our Year 12 students

School photographs

I am very aware as we commence Term 3, that this is a significant term for our Year 12 students as they edge closer to their final exams and life beyond school. With all that has transpired nationally and globally this year, their final year of school has not panned out as they expected. Understandably in this there has been disappointment and frustration. In the midst of the uncertainty there are, however, things that remain certain. Our Year 12 students are creative, hardworking and regularly demonstrate a desire to serve. They are increasingly goal-orientated, inquisitive and self-aware. They are a pleasure to engage with and I have no doubt that the experience of 2020 is building into their lives a resilience that they will take with them into the future.

The 2020 Scots Campus school photographs have arrived and will be distributed to students this week. Students who missed the ‘Scots Campus Photo Day’ will have the opportunity to have their photo taken during the ‘All Saints Campus Photo Day’ in August.

Commencing this Friday, we will be meeting regularly with Year 12 over a special morning tea. This will be an opportunity for us to catch up with

Scots Campus Pre-K, Boarding (Years 5-12), Senior School (Years 9-12) 4173 O’Connell Road BATHURST NSW 2795

School uniform matters With only two terms left until the uniform transition period ends, I would like to encourage parents to begin planning for the inevitable. From January 2021, the Scots School and All Saints College uniforms will be retired; all Senior School students will be required to be in the new SASC uniform. At the end of last term students were reminded of the School’s hat policy: if students are outside in the sun, they must be wearing a hat. Fortunately most students readily comply with this important directive and remember to bring a hat to school. Please ensure that your student has the correct school hat and that it is brought to school.

A big welcome back to Term 3 from the library staff at Scots All Saints. What’s happening in Term 3? Our annual Literature Festival (postponed from Term 2), is now going to be held on Monday 31 August, Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 September. The festival is a 3-day celebration of reading, illustration and creative writing for students from Pre-K to Year 11. The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Space for Stories’. We have an exciting lineup of authors and illustrators and the students will experience a combination of author/illustrator presentations and writing and illustration workshops. Our 2020 Festival presenters are Andrew Daddo; Freya Blackwood; Phillip Gwynne; Alison Tait; Kirsty Eagar and James Knight. Forthcoming newsletters will include short author/illustrator biographies and title lists from each presenter. Library classes prior to the festival, will focus on the authors each class is scheduled to see so that the students will be familiar with them and their books and be well prepared for a most exciting 3 days.

Horses return with students on All Saints Campus What a wonderful gift and privilege it is to do a full day at school and within 10 minutes of the final lesson, just 50 metres from your boarding house, you are with your beautiful horse without a care in the world. COVID-19 Health precautions to keep our College and wider community safe We are very fortunate to have a supportive, caring and collaborative College community who has pulled together to keep ourselves and others safe during this challenging time. As the situation continues to evolve, we continue to follow the guidelines from NSW Health. We acknowledge that the information from various government departments can be overwhelming, however the NSW Health restrictions still apply as previously communicated: • stay home if you are unwell; • get tested if you present with any symptoms; • self-isolate for 14 days if you have been in a ‘hotspot’ area including Victoria (See more details below) • social distance by staying 1.5 metres apart • regularly wash and sanitise your hands • cover coughs and sneezes. In order to make it a little easier, we would like to remind everyone of the protocols we have in place for managing COVID-19 within the College: • Kiss, Drop-off/ Collect and Move on - parents and carers should not alight from vehicles or move around on any of our campuses. Where possible, children should alight from vehicles and parents should stay in their vehicle. • Where it is necessary for safety reasons, parents should park and walk with their children to the gate, leave them safely on the curb or grass area and return to your vehicle. It is not appropriate for parents to walk with children to their classrooms or stop, speak or gather with other parents. • If you are waiting to collect your children at the end of the school day, please remain in your car until your child is waiting to meet you. If you must alight from your vehicle, ensure that you comply with social distancing and remain at least 1.5 metres away from others. • We are working towards reducing congestion in the College car parks and request that parents help by limiting the amount of time they spend in their vehicles at drop off and pick up times. Please consider other families who need to use the drop off/ pick up zone. • The only exemption to this is Pre-Kindergarten drop off/ pick-up and After School Care collection because there is a legal requirement that parents sign their children in and out of these services. As such parents and carers of Pre-Kindergarten students and those collecting from After School Care will have to enter our campuses. On these occasions, access is limited to one adult (and any other children who need to remain with that adult for safety reasons.) We ask that those entering our campuses for this purpose limit the amount of time that they spend on campus and adhere to social distancing. • All students will have temperature checks before classes commence. • All visitors/suppliers will be asked to present at Reception to be signed in, hand sanitiser used and temperature checks before entering the campus. If you need to speak with your Child’s teacher or another staff member, we ask that you make contact via phone or email. continued page 11

Uniform Shop orders should be placed online where possible and either collected by your child or shipped to you at home. If you do need to attend the uniform shop please be vigilant with social distancing whilst waiting for assistance. We have noted the updated guidelines from the NSW Government in relation to non-essential travel and will review our activities accordingly, parents will be notified of any changes that need to be made to activities. Finally, some of you have enquired about our Protocols for student attendance at school. Here is another copy for your records: • All Staff, Students and Parents/ Carers must familiarise themselves with and adhere to the directives and guidelines of NSW Health. • People who may have been in contact with someone who is confirmed to have COVID-19 should self-isolate for 14 days. • Staff, Students and Parents/ Carers with ANY COVID-19 symptoms (even very mild symptoms) should not attend school or work and are not permitted to enter our campuses for any reason until they have been tested and cleared of COVID-19. • Staff, Students and Parents/ Carers with ANY symptoms of COVID-19 must attend a testing centre and be tested. • If Staff, Student and Parent/ Carers or member of their household are tested for COVID-19 then all members of that household should remain off campus until a Negative result is returned. After the negative result is returned all members of the household who are free from symptoms are welcome to return to campus as per the normal protocols currently in place. • Boarding students will follow the same protocol as the rest of the College community, however on some occasions the Health Centre and Boarding staff may have to assist to facilitate travel time for parents who need to come and collect their child. • Staff, Students and Parents/ Carers who have been in Victoria or any other identified COVID-19 hotspots/ areas of concern must not enter the Scots All Saints College Campuses until 14 days after they have returned from their travel. This is in addition to any requirements that may be stipulated by NSW Health. Hotspots and locations of concern are as defined on the NSW Health website: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/latest-news-and-updates#latest-covid-19-case-locations-in-nsw • Any student who is currently well, has not been advised by a public health officer to self-isolate and who does not live with someone awaiting a COVID-19 test result should attend school as normal. Again, we would like to express our gratitude to the College community for the way that you’ve supported these initiatives. We understand that this is a difficult time but appreciate your understanding that the health and safety of our community must always come first. Mr John Weeks
