Out and about with the Headmaster Mr David Gates As this is my last article as Headmaster, I thought I would take the opportunity to share with everyone part of what I said to the Senior School at my Farewell Assembly last Friday.

The role of Headmaster was once described by a retiring Head as “The best job possible with some of the worst days imaginable”; this has certainly proved to be true for me. Thankfully the good days have far outweighed the bad!

I have been truly privileged to be the Headmaster of The Scots School for 7 years and Scots All Saints College for the last 18 months. I am very fortunate to have worked closely with so many wonderful staff during the last 8.5 years.

The last year has been very challenging for me as I have had to come to accept the reality that the new College must have a new Headmaster. In Mr Weeks you will have a wonderful educator with 30 years of experience across three independent schools. He is also someone who has been here working with me and the senior staff as a consultant for the last 15 months and so he is well placed to make changes from the beginning. I didn’t really know him previously but I now regard him as a good friend and I know the College is in very good hands.

For me this marks the end of my time as Headmaster but also, most likely, my career in education at least in a full time capacity. In all probability, I will retire to travel and then settle down on the mid North Coast. I’m certainly not looking for work but if a school is looking for a temporary Principal I may help out for a term or two.

Special Highlights The Scots School and Scots All Saints College will always hold a very special place in my heart and it is only right that I take time to mention a few highlights.

• First and foremost, we are a school for children and young adults with all the complexities that brings. Navigating these complexities through guiding, counselling, disciplining and restoring broken relationships therefore is the most rewarding part of this role. Student wellbeing has always been the most important part of my role in the six schools I have worked at.

Out and about with the Headmaster Mr David Gates • Observing children grow and thrive, experiencing disappointment and then to watch them bounce back, to take on challenges rather than avoid them, to support each other, to build teams and share in the elation of success or the disappointment of loss is similarly rewarding.

• I have enjoyed watching a great deal of sport, teaching English, History, Christian Studies and Studies of Religion, joining with students on outdoor adventures, seeing students perform in musical and drama productions, showing cattle and so much more.

Special Achievements When I look back in time at what I have been able to achieve with the support of the staff, parents, students and the School Board/College Council what really stands out for me personally are the following accomplishments: • Raising the funds to build the Tim Richards Pavilion; a much needed building which is used extensively.

• The planting of 130 deciduous trees particularly around the back drive to enhance the beauty of the Scots Campus.

• Repositioning the school with the full support of the School Board through lowering the fees by an average of 30% in the last few years.

• Developing and expanding the Learning Support and Enrichment Team to better cater for students at different levels of achievement.

• Developing a strong school culture which places an emphasis on personal character development as extremely important including: inclusivity, doing your best, commitment to a task, showing kindness to others, telling the truth, school pride and humility and graciousness when enjoying success or experiencing disappointment.

• Finally, I am very honoured to have had the opportunity of navigating the extremely challenging task of being the Foundation Head of Scots All Saints College over the last 22 months in cooperation with the Senior staff.

The Merger of The Scots School and All Saints’ College I am excited for the future of the new college. Although the merger has had its challenging moments, I truly believe it is going exceptionally well. If you just pause and reflect on how much we have achieved since 29 August 2017, 22 months ago, it is remarkable. And…so many wonderful successes have already been obvious.

Gillian and I have lived and breathed this school and this community; we have put our heart and soul into it and we will miss it greatly. We have loved all the things that make Scots and Scots All Saints College so special and we are excited to see it grow and prosper as the new college.

We would also like to acknowledge and thank those staff who taught, coached and inspired our four children who attended this school and the students who befriended them. We couldn’t want for a better education for them.

So, where to from here?

We are really looking forward to travelling for a year once Genevieve finishes Year 12 in November. I look forward to working on my golf handicap, kayaking on still waters at sunrise, hiking in the National Parks, reading history and autobiographies, becoming involved in community charity initiatives, watching sport and spending quality time with Mrs Gates and my grown up children, and later this year, enjoying being a grandad.

I have been truly blessed by God. His provision in our lives has been amazing. I started teaching the day after my last exam in November 1981 and I have been very fortunate to enjoy a wonderful teaching career over 38 years.

Whatever occurs over the next few years, Scots and Scots All Saints will always hold a very special place in our hearts. The possibilities this new college offers in terms of a high quality education in Bathurst are endless. Embrace the new college to make it great…

• focus on what has been achieved and will be achieved rather than the glitches that will be sorted with time.

• focus on building personal character, not competitive advantage over others, or a sense of entitlement and elitism.

• avoid the pursuit of materialism for its own sake or secular pursuits devoid of meaning because in the end what our world needs is people of real character based on a firm Christian faith.

• focus on building a College community where you think less about yourself and more about the College community you are able to contribute to; don’t think about what’s in it from me but what can I do to make this a better place.

• and, always remain open to be challenged by the truth of God’s love and his gift of grace.

Return and Earn Scots All Saints College Middle School recently won a grant to assist with improving the schools sustainability.

Orange bus service launch

Great job to the Environmental Club for being part of the implementation of the new 'Return and Earn' yellow bins in our playground which were purchased with the grant.

Scots All Saints College officially launched the Orange Bus service last week at Orange Visitor Information Centre. Mayor of Orange City Council, Cr Reg Kidd, joined Head of College, Mr John Weeks (officially in his role on 1 July), local parents and students and senior staff to launch the new private College bus service. Students travelling from the Orange region to Scots All Saints College will now enjoy a direct service from Orange to our Bathurst campuses in under 60 minutes.

Junior School Mr Anthony Roohan Director of Junior School

Thank you Mr Gates Tomorrow we will honour Mr Gates in a very special assembly to acknowledge his time and work for the College. Mr Gates commenced as Headmaster of The Scots School in 2011 and will be best remembered as someone who effectively led the College through a period of enormous change but also someone who was there to listen, support, reassure and get to know each of us whether we were a staff member, a student or parent. I personally thank Mr Gates for his leadership and support of the Junior School programs and initiatives over the past 5 years and the tremendous support he has given me. Tomorrow’s assembly commences at 9:00 am in the Bickerdike and will feature Highland Dancing, Pipes and Drums and The Big Band as we say ‘Thank you Mr Gates!’

Thank you Mrs Gates and Mrs Duffy We also say thank you to Mrs Gates and Mrs Duffy. Mrs Gates has worked at the school in a learning support role for the past 4 years and will always be remembered as the friendly face from the pedestrian crossing. We thank Mrs Gates for the wonderful job she has done helping our students learn to read and wish her well with the next chapter in her life.

We also thank Mrs Duffy who has taught Year 1 Pandas three days a week during Term 2. We thank her for her experience and expertise in leading our Year 1 students this term. In Term 3, Mrs Shurmer will continue in her role whilst Mrs Duffy will be replaced by Mrs Sarah Willis who returns from her maternity leave position. Mrs Willis has taught a range of K-2 classes at The Scots School over the past 4 years and is highly regarded by all.

Excursion to Woolworths Kindergarten went on a very exciting excursion last week to Woolworths.

They learnt about different types of fruit and vegetables, saw how they compact their waste and even spent a couple of seconds in the fridges… brrrr.

Kindergarten finished the tour making some fruit rockets. A big thank you to our bus drivers and Mrs Jenny Donnelly for organising our transport.

Maggie Walsh Red Carpet Disco The disco was a wonderful success. A big thank you to our FOJAMS who organised and operated the BBQ on the night. It was great to have so many dedicated parents who gave up their time to assist. A big thank you must also go to Footsteps who conducted some sensational lessons with the students in the lead up to the disco and for keeping everyone moving on the night.

Languages Day - Friday 21 June What a wonderful day we had last Friday for Languages Day. Thank you to Mrs Adamson and Mr Pike for preparing the students so well and for immersing them in these language and cultural experiences. I was very impressed with our younger students singing so fluently and confidently in French and I had the time of my life making sushi with Stage 2 and Mr Pike. Semester One Report

By now you should have received your child’s Semester One Report. We are very happy with how the report has come together and with the feedback it will provide you with as a parent. Inside your envelope you should have received a letter providing you with information about some of the new objectives. I encourage you to read through this alongside the report to help in your understanding. You will have an opportunity to discuss the report in more detail at Parent Teacher Interviews in Term 3, Week 2.

Showcase Portfolios Showcase Portfolios were sent home today. Many of you would be familiar with the portfolios that have been used in both schools previously but for some they may be a new concept. Portfolios are just one of the ways that we as teachers can communicate with parents and provide feedback about progress. Other methods we use include Seesaw, parent-teacher interviews, semester reports and student led conferences. Take some time to look through the portfolio with your child and discuss some of their learning with them. There is a reflection sheet at the rear of the Portfolio which we also encourage you to complete with your child.

Calling all paleontologists!

Pre-Kindergarten have been investigating all things Dinosaur as our final STEM topic for Term 2. We have loved exploring fossils and skeletons of various creatures and the children have shared many facts with each other during news sessions.

Farewell Mr Gates I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge Mr Gates for all of his commitment and effort in making the amalgamation of The Scots School and All Saints College successful. I have only been working with Mr Gates and Mrs Gates for the last twelve months but, in that time, I have realised the passion they both have for getting the best out of every child. On behalf of the Middle School community I would like to pass on a vote of thanks to both Mr and Mrs Gates and wish them all the very best for the next phase of their lives.

Literature Festival The Literature Festival held last week was a resounding success. It was a joy to see so many focused students listening to and learning from highly regarded childrens' book authors. Thank you to our wonderful library staff for providing the students with such engaging learning opportunities.

Languages Day Last Friday, our Year 5 and 6 students celebrated Languages Day. Their assembly performances demonstrated their knowledge of the culture and languages studied but, most of all, illustrated how much fun they are having in their learning.

Big Night Out It was fantastic to see many of our Middle School students on the stage performing on Wednesday night at the Middle School Big Night Out. I am always so proud of the confidence and talents our students possess and nights such as The Big Night Out provide opportunities for them to shine.

Holidays I encourage all of our students to take some time to relax and 'recharge the batteries' before Term 3. I would like to congratulate them on their efforts and achievements this semester and wish them a safe and happy holiday. Classes resume for Term 3 on Tuesday 23 July.

Agricultural Technology program Year 7 students have been engaged in an Agricultural Technology program and have had the opportunity to learn about the poultry industry.

The students have also learnt how to raise chickens.

There was great excitement in our Science Department today when the first of our incubated eggs hatched, with many more to follow.

SENIOR SCHOOL As we wrap up Term 2, I wish to say THANK YOU to the students, families and staff who have contributed to what has been another successful term on Scots Campus. Congratulations to the students who have achieved their personal best in their academic subjects and co-curricular pursuits. Your efforts are noted and we are proud of your resilience and determination to set goals and work consistently towards them.

The Semester One reports for Year 9 and 10 are currently being finalised and will be emailed to parents in the coming days.

On behalf of the staff, I wish our students and their families a happy, restful and safe holiday. We will look forward to seeing everyone back in class on Tuesday 23 July.

SENIOR STUDENTS AND VEHICLES Please note that senior students wishing to drive to school must collect, complete and submit a Permission to Drive form. These may be collected from and returned to Ms Leaf. The College rule is that once at school, students must not leave the campus in their vehicles or in a friend’s vehicle without an official request from their parents. Students arriving late or leaving early from the campus during the day must sign in/out at Reception.

CAMPUS SPEED LIMIT – 15km/h The speed limit on the Scots Campus is 15km/h. For obvious reasons we need drivers to adhere to this rule, especially from 3:20 pm when there is increased student movement (Pre-Kindergarten and Senior School students) near roads and the top carpark.

Please remember that we are a boarding school and our boarding students do use the roads as they move around the campus outside of school hours.

We had a great time playing Star Wars battles in the gym, boarders shared their story and we looked at what the Bible says about how to make the most our lives. We finished the night with a big feast. It was great to hang out at the Scots Campus together. We can’t wait to come again and meet more of the boarders and students.

Winter Sport Break Our winter season reaches a mid-season break this week with the holidays approaching. Students are to be commended on their efforts so far this season. There have been many pleasing results and performances. While the holiday gives our students a chance to relax and rejuvenate over the three weeks, we encourage all students to try and find time each day to exercise and if possible find three 30 minute minimum sessions each week for vigorous activity to try and maintain fitness levels.

The second half of the season tends to be really important for teams leading up to semifinals and any advantage we can get through maintained fitness levels will be of benefit.

Highland Jazz Night I wish to commend the contribution and praise the skill of our students in the Pipes and Drums, Big Band, Jazz Collective and Highland Dancing for the Highland Jazz Night. It was a very entertaining and enjoyable evening that showcased the talents of our students and staff. The work and talent from Mr MacKenzie, Mr Clipsham and Mrs Durie was also on display as they prepared the students for the night.

We have already looked at how we can combine the different musical arrangements and ensembles for 2020 so be prepared to book your spot next year for a great night! Thank you also must be extended to the parents and friends that supported the night and for the work of the Friends of Pipes and Drums who set up and planned the evening.

Cadets Our cadets learned about concealment and movement last week and how to perform commando type dives and rolls. It was a lot of fun!

grass. This week the Cadets will do some PT training and continue to work on movement in the field. On Wednesday 17 June we are having an outdoor Q store clean up. Lifeguard Training Our soon to be lifeguards have been learning how to attend swimmers with suspected neck or spinal injuries. They have been working together learning the procedures and protocols for using the spinal board. The group will finish their training soon. We commend the students on their willingness to become trained and for braving the cool weather – even though the pool is heated they still get a little cold. We thank Mrs Inwood for leading the group. Next term we will have a group learning to become teachers of swimming. If you are interested and over the age of 16, please email Mr Adams ASAP. Winter Sports Tour 2020 We have been in touch with a sports tour travel agent who has given us some great ideas for winter sports tours. On the short list of tour destinations are the possibilities of a rugby tour to Singapore and a netball tour to New Zealand.

We are still only in the preliminary stages of planning and are seeking other options, but we are making some progress. Stay tuned for more details next term.

Student writing Winter is Here Forget the whole winter is coming, winter is here! It’s already snowed around the Bathurst region, giving some much needed moisture and of course a great playground for youthful spirits.

The first frost has been and gone and spider webs have been donned with their crystal tiaras. If the rest of the world is ready, are you? It’s time to break out the heavy coats and warm woollen mittens, open up some hot chocolate, coffee or tea and cuddle up with as many blankets you deem possible.

photography, the new fashion trends, foggy breath, mumbling fire, spiced soups and curry, frosted windows with faces drawn in them, pink noses and cold fingers, hoarse voices roaring on the sidelines in support.

Bathurst is a hub for winter leisure, many sporting facilities open up seasonal activities such as the well supported rugby for SASC, and Council holds many events to bring out the snowy spirit.

The Winter Festival (6 - 21 July 2019) promotes local food and drink, rides and shows for the kids, music, performances and more.

Languages Day 2019 All Saints Campus

Many opportunities are organised throughout the year for students to immerse themselves in dynamic and eclectic programs to engage them in French or Japanese practice and culture.

Our recent Language Days was the major event for the year.

Year K-2 students performed a concert of French songs with singing and instrument performances for their families with great zest! Year 3 and 4 Japanese students demonstrated Calligraphy, origami and sushi making techniques.

Year 5 constructed the Eiffel Tower and Year 6 students performed a traditional Japanese felt play.

The Year 7 band performed, On Ecrit sur les murs (Kids United). Students and families enjoyed their time together celebrating these two very different world cultures.

Honorary junior judges for Camera Club children's ward display On Monday night, five of our Stage 3 students attended the Bathurst Camera Club meeting as honorary junior judges, along with seven other students from local schools.

The judges were given the responsibility to select 20 photographs from over 100 images taken by club members to go on display in the Children's ward at the Bathurst Base Hospital.

Lily Gray, Angus Gossland, Patrick Anderson, Lincoln Craft and Baxter Killiby all contributed beautifully to the evening and experienced what it is like to have community involvement across a number of local schools and organisations.

Thank you to the Bathurst Camera Club for inviting us to this event.

Regional Youth Choir selection Scots All Saints College would like to congratulate Emma Russell (Year 12), Oscar Stocks (Year 10) and Isabella Taylor (Year 9) for their selection in the Regional Youth Orchestra. These are the only students from the Bathurst Region selected to take part in the Orchestra. They have also been invited to attend two Regional Youth Orchestra projects in Goulburn, Canberra and Tamworth later this year.

Additional congratulations to Emma Russell who has been selected to be in the orchestra for the last three years. These students will be representing the Mitchell Conservatorium whilst in the Regional Youth Orchestra. This is a wonderful achievement.

NSWCIS Cross Country

Congratulations to the students who competed at the NSWCIS Cross-Country Championships. From their success at HICES, Lincoln Craft, Izaak Scott, Elle Tasker and Chontelle Burgess qualified to compete at CIS in the primary division and similarly from their success at AICES, Miller Rivett, Todd Nelson and Morgan Watts qualified in the secondary division.

The conditions on the day were favourable for long distance running and these selected students, all very familiar with competition, raced with tremendous courage, determination and grit. They should be extremely proud of their efforts and be content knowing that their hard work has paid off. All results were outstanding in a very competitive competition.

Library News 2019 Scots All Saints Literature Festival ‘space to read’ The first Scots All Saints Literature Festival was held last week and was hailed as an outstanding success.

We were able to host an impressive line-up of authors and illustrators to work with our students from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 11 in a mix of presentations and writing/illustration workshops.

During these sessions, our authors and illustrators shared their knowledge and passion for books, writing and illustrating with our students.

On the final day of the Festival, we were delighted to be involved in a book launch for one of our guest authors, Yvette Poshoglian. The first book in her new series Puppy Diary was launched to an audience of students from Kindergarten to Year 4.

The children were very excited and Yvette was equally excited to be greeted by a sea of puppy masks which the children had created!

Mrs Elizabeth Tamsitt off to Salzburg Mrs Elizabeth Tamsitt, our talented PreKindergarten to Year 8 Music Coordinator, is travelling to Europe in the holidays to further her educational skills in classroom music.

She has been selected to attend the 2019 OrffSchulwerk International Summer School at the world renowned Orff Institute at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria.

The Orff-Schulwerk model provides a developmental approach combining music, movement, drama and speech. The Summer school will challenge Mrs Tamsitt's pedagogy and skills as she explores the artistic and practical aspects of the method with some of the world's best educators.

At its base, Orff-Schulwerk, is a living and developing tradition, created by Carl Orff, which provides a starting point of a pedagogical practice and forms the basis of almost all music universities.

The Orff Institute provides a variety of courses and qualifications in Australia and overseas and Mrs Tamsitt, having already completed the Australian Course, was accepted to take part in the 2019 International Summer School at the headquarters of the Orff Institute at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.

The Summer School is a seven day course providing practical tuition in multiple subjects including assessments, performance and composition tasks. There are also lessons exploring rhythmic games from the world's cultures and dance tasks focusing on improvisation, exercises for awareness, movement games and basic technique. Other lessons include techniques for singing and instruments including strings.

The unification of music and movement is the centre of Orff’s concept of music education and is a holistic approach that empowers the student to take ownership of their learning and is aimed at creative expression.
