A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks As we welcomed our ‘fresh faced’ students back to school after the long weekend, we enjoyed the grand opening of the new ‘Outdoor Café’ on the Scots Senior Campus. By all reports it has been very well received. Thank you to Mrs Jenny Donnelly for organising the café. Located in the Pavilion overlooking the main oval on the Scots Campus, the café gives Year 9 to 12 students many new and exciting options for snacks and lunch time meals. With the main oval now open for use we hope the café will encourage students to ‘spread out’ and make the most of our beautiful and spacious Senior Campus. Looking forward to 2021 another new development at Scots All Saints College will be the delivery of the Primary Industries course. Primary Industries is a VET (Vocational Education and Training) course that is highly valued by students, parents and employers. The course will make full use of our tremendous agricultural facilities. The ‘Edwin Ray Agricultural Centre’ includes approximately 30 hectares of land along with our Limousin and Hereford cattle studs comprising of 22 breeding cows (and their calves) and our flock of first cross ewes. Students will be able to develop competencies in areas such as Fencing, Tractors, Work Health and Safety, First Aid, Livestock and Cropping. Additional to the on campus experiences at Scots All Saints College the students will undertake 70 hours of work placement in relevant agricultural enterprises. The 240 hour course will be run over 2 years in timetabled classes. The course will be delivered by a very experienced teacher who has had vast experience on large livestock and cropping properties and is looking forward to passing this on. Upon satisfying the requirements of the course, students obtain a nationally recognised AQF Certificate II in Agriculture which enables them to pursue a Certificate III post school or to enter the workforce already qualified. This course can also be used towards obtaining an ATAR. After a time of uncertainty, it feels good to be able to plan ahead. Optimism is the key to moving forward. Optimism is having a positive approach. It is asking how things can be done when others have given up, saying that it can’t be done. As Winston Churchill said, “a pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” Rather than waiting for the winds to blow, in our favour - we should move the sails in the direction of the wind to move forward.
