Betty Cuthbert Almost twenty years ago, I produced a Christian Television show titled Life: Body, Mind and Spirit. The show focused on physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual health tips. A segment of the program was an interview with a famous Australian Christian athlete, and included Shane Gould, Margaret Court, Nick Farr Jones, Brian Booth and, of course, Betty Cuthbert – whose name is now proudly one of the Scots All Saints houses. When I told my father that I was flying to Perth to interview Betty, he asked if he could come. My father had developed a schoolboy crush on Betty after watching her win three gold medals on the track at the 1956 Olympic Games, and was eager to meet the sports legend. (Just as an aside, my mother was very happy for dad to join me and I know she would have asked to come along had I been filming Omar Sharif (from Doctor Zhivago)! What was interesting in meeting Betty Cuthbert was not her success, but rather her character. Here was this amazing athlete whose body had been overpowered by multiple sclerosis and constantly needed the help of a nurse. And yet her zest for life, her faith in the resurrection, and her hope not just in the kingdom to come but in being raised up into someone far more glorious than she had been in her prime, was, to say the least, overwhelming. She had never questioned why she got the disease, but knew that through it she could make a difference and have a greater impact on the lives of others than if she had not had the disease. Dad and I left the interview no longer star struck by a legendary athlete and national icon, but a humble, joyful sister-in-the-Lord. Fourteen years later, she passed from this life into the next, and just over a year ago, my dear old Dad joined her. He, too, was confident, not in his own performance, physical or otherwise, but rather in the Grace of Christ. As the old Hymn, ‘Rock of Ages’ states, “Nothing in my hands I bring, simply to the cross I cling.” Amen.

Junior School Mr Anthony Roohan Director of Junior School

Week of Innovation We’re looking forward to an exciting week next week as we launch our new Innovation Centre. All of our Junior School classes will experience the world of VR with Lumination. Kindergarten will explore the movement of objects, whilst Stage 1 will look at forms of energy using augmented reality. Stage 2 will explore the impact of climate change using VR experiences and creation. This is all about developing creativity and collaboration, and unique solutions to real world problems. It also aims to instil a deeper understanding and appreciation of their role in building a successful and positive future. Lego company Bricks 4 Kids will run sessions for our Junior School students on Wednesday. All Prep- Year 6 students will design and create an amusement park and will have a specific component that they will develop Prep will be responsible for a Safari Park, Kinder and Stage 1: 2D Mosaic Building or 3D building of a popular amusement park whilst Stage 2 will build motorized amusement park rides with technic kits. Stage 3 will pull it altogether and add some final touches. We hope that you can join us at the Innovation Centre on Wednesday evening at 6pm to not only see our amusement park but some of the other incredible things that your child will do in the Innovation Centre. Have you filled a bucket today? A bucket filler is someone who thinks of others and does or says things that builds them up. Putting other people first and saying nice things to other people fills up their bucket and helps them to feel good about themselves. It also helps the bucket filler to feel good about themselves. Bucket filling is just one activity we can do that helps us to focus on what we can do for one another. This week I’d encourage you to talk to your son or daughter about what they’ve done or said to be a bucket filler this week. Stage 3 Support Networks Our Year 5 health unit this term looks at the impact emotions play in decision making and keeping the students and others safe. This is an important topic for Stage 3 students, as it leads them to consider the ‘why’ of some of their decision. We reflect on their responses to different and difficult situations and ask the students to tell us who they can turn to if they need help; in other words, their support network. Many students are well-versed in identifying their support network and will readily name parents, grandparents and carers, trusted adults and friends. In this unit we also introduce them to the support network outside their immediate circle, the Kids Helpline. Kids Helpline has operated since 1991 and is a free and confidential service for people aged 5-25 offering practical and emotional support. The Year 5 students were given some fridge magnets to take home with the contact details of the Kids Helpline so they have another option to add to their support network. Mrs Jo Nicholls, Stage 3 Coordinator Stage 4 Report Kermit the Frog famously sang, ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green’, lamenting his isolation and ordinariness and expressing his desire to be more colourful and attractive. However, thankfully he concludes by celebrating his individuality, his special and unique characteristics and personal potential. He sings, ‘I’m green, it’ll do fine. It’s beautiful and it’s what I want to be’. continued page 6

While ambition is a fine thing, it is also important to celebrate individuality and difference. Fortunately, Stage 4 students are provided with many opportunities to let their individual strengths shine and be recognized. Congratulations to Grayson Jacobsen, Chido Mutyiri and Oscar Yordanoff who have been selected to represent Stage 4 at the CWA Central West Group Public Speaking Competition on Monday 24 May. Thank you to William Randall for his excellent performance on the saxophone at last Friday’s assembly. Year 7 completed numerous NAPLAN tests last week with great focus and determination. It was also pleasing to see a multitude of colourfully clad students completing the cross country course last Friday, all striving to do their best for their respective houses. Thank you to all those in Stage 4 who assisted by guiding younger students around the course with such warmth and enthusiasm. In Core classes much thought has been given to possible contributions to a time capsule to be buried next to the Innovation Centre, which will be a hive of creativity and invention at next week’s exciting launch. ROAR THE

Senior School Mr Andrew Weeding Deputy Head P-12/ Head of Senior School

Over the coming weeks, teachers will be writing half yearly reports that will summarise progress to date. In the report, each student will receive a class work and homework commitment using a 1-5 scale. Regardless of ability, every student can take control of achieving the best commitment grade possible. In the recent school assembly, we celebrated twenty four Year 12 students who demonstrated outstanding commitment based on their report and this was detailed in the Roar last week. Over the coming months, the Team Leaders will speak with the students at their year meetings on how to set goals using these commitment grades as a motivating influence. That said, it still isn’t too late for every student to keep making a difference to get the best possible grade on the report to be issued at the end of the term. I thought it also important to provide a basic explanation of the letter grade system that goes on the report for each subject as sometimes these grades don’t always appear consistent across subjects. Based on formal assessments, and using NESA’s Common Grade Scale for Stage 5 or specific course descriptors for Stage 6 subjects, an A to E grade is awarded to each student to show the standard that was achieved. In determining the grade, the Head of Department, in consultation with the teachers use sample work on the NESA website to align the work of our students with the descriptors. These A-E grades are not intentionally linked to marks and therefore it is not valid to correlate the marks and A-E grades in one subject to another subject. The end of year A-E grade that is achieved by each student in Years 10 and 11 is sent to NESA for inclusion on the Record of School Achievement that gets issued with the HSC credential at the end of Year 12. If you have questions about the awarding of A-E letter grades, please don’t hesitate to contact Mr Jones or myself. Stage 5 As we lead into the second half of this term one can’t help say “where does the time go?” The College is such a busy place and the students do an amazing job juggling their academic studies with their many co-curricular activities. We would like to congratulate the students in Year 9 and 10 who represented the College at the State da Vinci Decathlon and the Year 10 students who attended the Science and Engineering Challenge in the past fortnight. Today four Year 10 pairs and a Year 9 pair of students are competing in the Evatt Competition which is a UN Youth Competition, which aims to educate young people about Australia’s place in the world and empower them as active citizens by developing public speaking, negotiation, teamwork, research, and diplomatic skills. The Year 12 House Captains ran an Inter-House Volleyball competition through lunch last week. It was great to see so many kids getting involved and enjoying the atmosphere created by the students leaders. Well done to Cuthbert House who won this competition. While many students participated, the following students stood out for their enthusiasm and help given to their Year 12 peers: Francesca Burke, Milli Triggs, Victoria Webb, Olivia Pitt, Perth Jaroensup, Paddy McKiernan and Charlie Rendall. A group of Year 10 students is taking advantage of the Writing Club on Tuesday lunch to improve their literacy skills and creative writing. Ms Sams encourages any students who is interested in this opportunity to come to the library to join in. Mrs O’Neill also encourages any student that would like any additional help with their homework or assessments to come to the library on a Wednesday lunch. Year 9 will be attending Bell Shakespeare production of 'Such Sweet Sorrow’ on Monday 24 May during periods 6 and 7. It is great to have this fabulous company back to school and this will lead into their study of Romeo and Juliet in Term 3. continued page 8

Stage 6 Year 12 have been busy with several events and functions over the last two weeks. The Year 12 Leaders participated in the mid-year leaders dinner and presentation. A great opportunity for the prefects to showcase their designated areas and what they have been working on throughout the semester. House Captains provided some physical activity for all students on the Senior Campus with a House volleyball competition. Many students participated in this event and enjoyed the spirit of competition and sportsmanship.

Quoi de Neuf!

As promised, this week’s Bonjour Bathurst features a conversation with the talented Annabelle Hickson. We very much enjoyed her company, as she is inspiring, warm, funny and relates to the students with ease. A city ‘lady’ converted to the country life. It is our delight to share a part of Annabelle’s story with the Scots All Saints community and afar. Annabelle will be a feature on Bonjour Bathurst as we go forward. We are very happy to have her on-board! Annabelle Hickson is a journalist, podcaster and photographer making passions and dreams her career. Annabelle recently created a seasonal publication GALAH, edited by herself, celebrating regional Australia. She lives on a pecan farm with her husband, three children and various animals. All students will now be able to join academic groups where they can share ideas, practice past papers, and support and encourage one another. Some Year 11 students are busy rehearsing and preparing for the Debutante Ball organised by the Highland Society which will be held on the 24 July. Finally, Year 12 leaver jerseys are due to arrive next week. Obviously the most important part of their final year as they are super keen to get them for the winter months.

Felicity Webb was away for the official Prefects' Induction but she received recognition at last weeks assembly.

Parents to the rescue

Ahh Saturday, you cold ole so-and-so! This past Saturday, hundreds of brave students and their families swapped their warm homes for freezing cold sporting fields. These heroic deeds were rewarded with lots of wins and lots of laughs! But fear not my friends, a sunny 17° is forecast for us this Saturday. Speaking of this Saturday, we’re hosting our first ISA Rugby fixture for the season. This will be our first full home game since that pesky COVID-19 came along more than 12 months ago. The grass is mowed, the sausages are ready to be sizzled and everyone is really excited to kick things off.

Unfortunately on Saturday morning our Net Set Go team had their game cancelled at the very last minute. The amazing parents of our young netball stars took to the court in a game of Kids Vs Grown Ups. As the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished. The girls gave Miss Murray and the other grown-ups a Netball lesson. A special shout out goes to Vivienne Jarvis who scored her first goal of the season. Wayto-go girls (and grown-ups)!

Senior School Athletics Carnival Next Thursday we’ll be running our Senior School Athletics Carnival on Campus East (Scots). Students are to come to school in their Winter sports uniform and wear their House shirt. We’re also asking students to wear a hat and apply sunscreen throughout the day, because that’s what awesome people do. In fact by simply wearing a hat, students will score a house point. Cross Country Our Junior and Middle School Cross Country Carnival was run and won last Friday on Campus West (Saints). Mawson won an incredible six of 12 races and proved that orange shirts really do go faster. We now have a team of amazing middle distance runners who will take part at the HICES Cross Country Carnival at Blue Mountains Grammar on Monday. I’ll let you know how we go next week. What a weekend of Rugby! Scots All Saints came up against Redfield College where our 1st XV enjoyed a 37-14 win. Our U16s went down 40-19 while our 2nd XV scored a 12-10 victory over Kinross. Unfortunately for our U13s, who played an 11-a-side non-competitive game against Redfield, came up short. Do it for Dolly Boarder’s Fundraiser The annual Do it for Dolly Day was held across Australia last Friday, 14 May. Across the country, 500 schools, businesses and communities embraced the message of kindness, wore blue and raised money and also awareness about the enormous impacts of bullying. This term the SASC boarding community has supported this very worthwhile cause. A cupcake and jelly cup stall on Friday was well supported by the students who were also encouraged to wear something blue to add to their uniform.

and 75 jelly cups awaited the hungry hordes who were also able to purchase a blue hair ribbon. Congratulations to the boarding community who raised a fantastic $502.75 for this most worthwhile cause. The boarding leaders, Amy, Hugo, Holly, Otto and Harriet should be commended on the dedication and leadership they displayed in the organising of this event. In the words of Tick Everett, Dolly’s dad, “Say yes to kindness and no to bullying.”

Isabel's story shortlisted for 'Write 4 Fun' final prize Following is a piece of writing from Year 10 student Isabel Randall. The story has been shortlisted for the final prize in the ‘Write 4 Fun’ Competiton. It will be published in the Write 4 Fun annual magazine.

The Last Job

the person who runs the camp.

Tall men in dark clothes walk up and down the fence line. Spotlights from towers keep watch on the ground. Large, sharp metal fences separate the inside from the out. The abnormal from the norm. The bad from the good even. My black, leather boots crunch against the midwinter snow. I wait for an opening. Two soldiers pass by each other without a word and once out of sight, I make a run for it. I run with my head down and clothes tucked closely, preventing me from the cold. I reach the sharp, wired fence and my eyes look upon a mass of bodies, huddled together making warmth from the cold. They said this rescue mission was going to be easy, yeah right. Forty-odd faces look up at me. Their faces pale and their lips blue. Layers of coats trying to prevent the cold are doing nothing for the mass of them. I shove my hand in my pocket, searching for my knife to cut through the fence. I wrap my hand around its hilt and the blade glows a dull blue. I thrust the knife into the fence and create a sizable hole for the prisoners to escape through.

Two men walk in, both in army uniforms with three lines on the chest. Three vertical lines one after the other. The symbol for the S.T.O.L Organisation. S.T.O.L stands for Service To Our Leader. The whole name and acronym suck but that’s what you get for leaving a narcissistic idiot in charge. The two men stand on either side of me as a third enters the room. “At last we meet.” The man in front peers down his nose at me. His voice commands authority, forcing me to avert my eyes. He comes closer, kneeling to level us. “You won’t be getting out of here this time, daughter”.

“Quickly, everyone out.” I urge the prisoners through the fence and out the other side. I check my pocket watch for the time. The soldiers pass by this spot every minute and I barely have enough time to get everyone out. Fifteen more people remain inside the fence, claiming not to want to come through, out of fear. Leaving them behind, I turn and sprint as hard as I can through the snow. I check the watch again and I slow my pace in defeat as the seconds count down. Five, four, three, two, one. My vision ceases as everything goes black. A blinding white light brings me back to my senses. The cold is gone from the air but snowflakes cover my anorak. The prisoners who were in the camp didn’t get away it seems. If anything I’m now one of them. I try to reach for my knife but ropes tying my arms and legs to the chair prevent me from doing so. Using my training I assess the room. It’s empty apart from myself in the centre. The room is small, square and covered in white paint. The only thing keeping me from going into an anxiety attack is the mirror facing me. It’s a one-way window for an interrogation. I’ve been caught before but not in these circumstances. This has been my most dangerous mission in six years. Not because of the high risk of getting caught, but because of Campus East (Scots) Senior School, Boarding (Years 9-12) 4173 O’Connell Road BATHURST NSW 2795

ONE OF MRS IVES’ FAVOURITE STORIES

Mrs Betty Ives, who had a 54 year relationship with The Scots School, had quite a few amusing tales from her association. When called upon to tell these, the story most often told was about an incident on the school’s dairy farm that operated for about twenty years from the mid-1950s. Early one morning the boys who were rostered on to milk the cows found them leaning up against the fence apparently asleep. Further inspection revealed that during the night they had broken through the fence into the neighbouring orchard. In the orchard was a pile of apples that had been discarded because they were damaged or otherwise unsaleable. The apples had fermented in the pile—apple cider. The cows were drunk! In a plot similar to that of a television sitcom, the complication was that it was the day that the Department of Agriculture inspectors were coming to test the quality of the milk. This of course would have revealed unacceptable levels of alcohol. The inspectors were delayed until such time as the cows sobered up and all was well. The photo above is of the milking machine in the dairy from the 1960s. Mr Andrew Maher, Archives Campus East (Scots) Senior School, Boarding (Years 9-12) 4173 O’Connell Road BATHURST NSW 2795
