A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks RUOK? Across Australia, Thursday 12th was national RUOK? Day. RUOK is the abbreviation for the all-important question, “Are you ok?” A question we are encouraged to ask our family members, school friends, work colleagues and others who we think could be struggling with life… and if they are, take action to help. The RUOK? website, www.ruok.org.au/joinr-u-ok-day, provides guidance and assistance in enabling all of us to help people struggling with mental health issues like anxiety, stress, loneliness, depression. Here are some tips from RUOK: “This year in the build-up to R U OK? Day we’re encouraging everyone to Trust the Signs, Trust your Gut & Ask R U OK? We want everyone to feel confident they know the signs someone might need support by listening to what they’re saying, seeing what they’re doing or knowing what’s going on in their life. Whenever you notice a change, no matter how small, we want you to trust your gut
and start an R U OK? conversation. Got a niggling feeling that someone you know or care about isn’t behaving as they normally would? Perhaps they seem out of sorts? More agitated or withdrawn? Or they’re just not themselves. Trust that gut instinct and act on it. By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. If they say they are not ok, you can follow our conversation steps to show them they’re supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load. If they are ok, that person will know you’re someone who cares enough to ask.” Organisations available to help if you or someone you know needs some advice include, but not limited to: Lifeline Australia 13 11 14 Mensline 1300 78 99 78 Relationships Australia 1300 364 277 Beyond Blue 1300 224 636 Kids Helpline 1800 551 800
