The Four Pieces for Piano reveal in miniature format the transparent phenomenon of compositional instability, the observation of the most fragile in-between spaces as they disappear. They concern the unfolding and deterritorialisation of (a-)symmetrical, structural, tonal-spatial-temporal phenomena that become compositional fissures, and finally observe what Husserl calls “self-givenness” and Heidegger the “manifest”, the “showing-itself-in-itself”.
The unfolded, compositional interstices refer to the Gospel of Matthew (16:16): “But blessed are you, for your eyes see and your ears hear.”

Mark Andre (b. 1964) studied composition with Claude Ballif and Gérard Grisey at the Paris Conservatoire, and with Helmut Lachenmann at the Stuttgart Hochschule für Musik. He has received numerous awards, including the Kranichstein Composition Prize at the 1996 Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music, and the 2002 Advancement Award of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. In 2009 he was appointed Professor of Composition at the Dresden Hochschule für Musik. His musical language is characterized by the deconstruction of algorithmically developed sets of rules. The resulting musical transitions represent metaphysical processes of transformation, such as the resurrection story in his works …auf… for orchestra (2005/2007) and Kar for strings (2009).
