Erkki-Sven Tüür, who was born in 1959 in Kärdla on the Estonian island of Hiiumaa, is one of the most remarkable composers of his generation. Largely self-taught, he studied percussion and flute at the Tallinn Music School from 1976 to 1980; later from 1980 to 1984 he studied composition with Jaan Rääts at the Estonian Academy of Music and took private lessons from Lepo Sumera. In 1979 Tüür founded the chamber rock group ‘In Spe’ that soon became one of the most popular in Estonia. From 1989 to 1992 he taught composition at the Estonian Academy of Music. His music has been performed at the Vienna Musikverein, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the Salle Pleyel in Paris, the Royal Albert Hall in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, Suntory Hall in Tokyo and the Sydney Opera Concert Hall.
Der 1959 in Kärdla auf der estnischen Insel Hiiumaa geborene Erkki-Sven Tüür gehört zu den bemerkenswertesten Komponisten seiner Generation. Seine musikalische Ausbildung erfolgte zunächst autodidaktisch, dann an der Musikschule Tallinn (1976–1980). Später studierte er Komposition bei Jaan Rääts an der Musikakademie Tallinn sowie privat bei Lepo Sumera (1980–1984). 1979 gründete Tüür das Ensemble „In Spe“, das bald zu den beliebtesten Rock-gruppen Estlands zählte. Von 1989 bis 1992 unterrichtete Tüür Komposition an der Estonian Academy of Music. Seine Musik wird in den wichtigen Konzerthäusern der Welt gespielt, so im Wiener Musikverein, dem Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, dem Salle Pleyel in Paris, der Royal Albert Hall in London, der Carnegie Hall in New York, der Suntory Hall in Tokyo, der Sydney Opera Concert Hall.
