Echo was an Oread who’d run the woods with Artemis, Mischievous nymph of the mountains and the caves. Words were her passion, she was crazed with them, dazed with them, Dizzy with the possibilities. And when Zeus would go down to the woods For a little bit of fun in the woods, it was Echo who would prattle Who would scatter chatter on the winds, So when Hera came near Hera wouldn’t hear what shouldn’t be heard by a wife.

Narcissus, kissed by the gods, got where the clear water tumbles with the dark, Darling of all who knew him. All who knew him asked the blind seer: ‘Will he know long life ?’ The seer said: ‘If he never knows himself.’ Narcissus, lost in the chase, driving the deer into the net And suddenly adrift and friendless.
