Commissioned by Presteigne Festival of Music and Arts Limited with funding from the Arts Council of Wales. First performance on 31st August 2010 at St Andrew’s Church, Presteigne, given by Clare McCaldin and the Presteigne Festival Orchestra conducted by George Vass.

3. O Unicorn Among The Cedars
The moon’s my constant mistress, And the lonely owl my marrow; The flaming drake, And the night-crow, make Me music to my sorrow.
O Unicorn among the cedars, To whom no magic charm can lead us, White childhood moving like a sigh Through the green woods unharmed in thy Sophisticated innocence, To call thy true love to the dance, O Dove of science and of light, Upon the branches of the night, O Ichthus playful in the deep Sea-lodges that forever keep Their secret of excitement hidden, O sudden Wind that blows unbidden, Parting the quiet reeds, O Voice Within the labyrinth of choice Only the passive listener hears, O Clock and Keeper of the years, O Source of equity and rest, Quando non fuerit, non est, It without image, paradigm Of matter, motion, number, time, The grinning gap of Hell, the hill Of Venus and the stairs of Will, Disturb our negligence and chill, Convict our pride of its offence In all things, even penitence, Instruct us in the civil art Of making from the muddled heart A desert and a city where The thoughts that have to labour there May find locality and peace, And pent-up feelings their release, Send strength sufficient for our day, And point our knowledge on its way, O da quod jubes, Domine.
I know more than Apollo; For oft, when he lies sleeping, I behold the stars At mortal wars, And the wounded welkin weeping. With a host of furious fancies, Whereof I am commander: With a burning spear, And a horse of air, To the wilderness I wander; With a knight of ghosts and shadows, I summoned am to Tourney: Ten leagues beyond The wide world’s end: Methinks it is no journey. Anon. 2. Why East Wind Chills Why east wind chills and south wind cools Shall not be known till windwell dries And west’s no longer drowned In winds that bring the fruit and rind Of many a hundred falls; Why silk is soft and the stone wounds The child shall question all his days, Why night-time rain and the breast’s blood Both quench his thirst he’ll have a black reply. When cometh Jack Frost? the children ask. Shall they clasp a comet in their fists? Not till, from high and low, their dust Sprinkles in children’s eyes a long-last sleep And dusk is crowded with the children’s ghosts Shall a white answer echo from the rooftops. All things are known: the stars’ advice Calls some content to travel with the winds, Though what the stars ask as they round Time upon time the towers of the skies Is heard but little till the stars go out. I hear content, and ‘Be content’ Ring like a handbell through the corridors, And ‘Know no answer’, and I know No answer to the children’s cry Of echo’s answer and the man of frost And ghostly comets over the raised fists.
