>>news2@feveronline.co.za ALL was exposed at Hibiscus Coast Municipality chambers on Tuesday when the application to turn Mpenjati beach, north of the lagoon and Trafalgar Beach, into a nudist one was approved by 32 councillors. Eight councillors objected while five chose to abstain from voting. The general consensus, according to the councillors, was that if youdon’twanttoseenakedpeople, don’t go to that particular beach. “While some may think it’s a rathercheekythingtosay, thepositive side to it is that the economic spin-off this beach will generate from naturist tourists, is tremendous.” Deputy Mayor, Johnnie de Wet, said council approved the application by KwaZulu-Natal Naturists Association (KZNNA) after thorough consideration. “Itwillbemadeanudistfriendly beach provided that they (KZNNA) successfully apply and obtain the necessary approvals from Department of Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs and KZN Ezemvelo in terms of the Integrated Coast Management Act 24 of 2008,” said de Wet. Municipal manager, Maxwell

Nobody is using that space... it is not nudity in public. Only people who want to see it, will see it.” He said the public will be informed as to when the beach will officially open as a nudist one and until then, nudity is forbidden. Those not in favour of council’s approval will not be allowed to appeal as there are no laws that provide for this sort of objection. However if anybody feels that their human rights are being violated, they may file a complaint at the constitutional court. John Skene, founder of the KZNNA was the main man behind the application. He said he was delighted that HCM had given the go ahead. “It’s a very courageous move that council has made. It’s going to be a financial drawcard for the South Coast,” he said. Skene, who is a naturists himself, owns a guesthouse in the area where guests practice the lifestyle. Residents have been split in opiniononthematteronsocialmedia.

No one was hurt and this incident took place outside of the store and lasted all of five to 10 seconds, from beginning to end. I would like to thank G4S for their professionalism during this incident. Investigations are on going.”

CANDYCE KRISHNA

>>news2@feveronline.co.za FORMER Hibiscus Coast Protection Services head, Dave Middleton, was denied bail for the fifth time by regional court Magistrate, Johann Bester, on Friday. Middleton faces 32 charges relating to the Sexual Offences Act. His alleged victims were nine and 13 years of age at the time of the incidents. He handed himself over to Margate police in September 2013, after he first evaded arrest and fled to Durban. The mother of one of the girls found nude images of the minors

on Middleton’s cellphone after he requested that she answer a call he had been waiting for. She noticed her daughter’s birthmark in one of the images and that the other ones were of another child who attended Middleton’s karate class. She then forwarded the pictures to her phone and reported the matter to police who began investigating. Middleton’s defense first argued that the images would not be allowed as evidence in the trial since it was obtained illegally. However, Bester provisionally allowed the pictures. Ugu to investigate school’s bill

CANDYCE KRISHNA

>>news2@feveronline.co.za MERLEWOOD Secondary has been experiencing financial difficulties after it was slapped with a R180 000 bill for water and sanitation services, a teacher at the school informed the Fever a month ago. The Ugu District Municipality has responded saying that the school’s services operate through domestic and fire meters.

“Aninvestigationisbeingconducted at the school and currently it can be confirmed that the school has a septic tank system. “The municipality is also investigating the discharge of this system,” said spokesperson Sipho Khuzwayo. He added that the accounts department has done verifications on the school’s account and has been found that payments made coincide with the utilised water and sanitation services.

“The municipality will conduct further investigations regarding the allegations,” he said. What baffles teacher Endhren Rangasamy is that there isn’t a constant water supply. “Pupils rely on Jojo tanks placed throughout the school to supply water. “The toilets don’t work and are in the most unhygienic condition. How can a school be charged for a non-existent service?”

EPUTY Minister of Higher Education and Training Mduduzi Manana, launched the Higher Education and training HIV/Aids (HEAids) programme at Esayidi TVET Nyenyezi campus on Friday. Manana said the programme was initiated by his department nine months ago. “If we didn’t bring this programme to this college we could have missed the point.” Manana said KwaZulu-Natal, being recorded as having the highest HIV/Aids incidents in the country, is not all bad be-

cause “this shows that the people in the province are getting tested”. HEAids ambassador and radio personality Chriselda Kananda was announced the “face” of the programme. She encouraged pupils to look after themselves and get tested for HIV. “I tested HIV positive 17 years ago. No human can determine when a person is to die,” she said. “First things first” is the slogan used for the programme. The director of HEAids Dr Ramneel Ahluwalia said its first priority for every South African is to look after their health. He said as HEAids, next they will be bringing men’s health programmes. Esayidi TVET principal Dr Sipho Nzimande said he hopes that this project encourages pupils to be honest enough and get tested.

EVEN students from local municipalities have been selected to pursue their career in Cuba. On Monday the Department of Health and the Ugu district Municipality held a farewell ceremony for them at Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre. “The thought of leaving my family for six years is a bit scary but I’m so grateful of the opportunity,” said Thamasanga Mbatha (17) of Mthwalume. He said first time he heard of this opportunity was at church, when members encouraged him to apply. Thamsanqa matriculated last year and is the only child of a single, unem-

ployed mother. Ugu District Municipality mayor Ntombifikile Gumede expressed concern that only seven students are being sent off this year compared to previous years. “We have six municipalities under Ugu and it worries me that in two consecutive years no student has been chosen from Vulamehlo Municipality. “It is impossible that all the students who applied did not meet the requirements,” she said. The mayor requested that the Department of Health look into this. Thulani Nkosana from the Department of Health said the dates when the students will leave for Cuba have not yet been confirmed. “We are looking at between the 13 to 15 November.”

HIS weekend is going to be a hectic for Ugu South Coast Tourism in that we will be concurrently involved in no less than three events in our area and in addition to promoting during the week at the Sports and Events Tourism Exchange (SETE) at the ICC in Durban. In the Umdoni area, we are presentingtheAfricaMarineandLeisure Expo at Scottburgh main beach, which will be a fascinating blend of oceanographic education, sea and land sports, entertainment, craft and commercial promotions - we encourage South Coasters to attend. Then inland in Oribi Gorge, we have sponsored the South Coast Lake

down here would relax before the big summer rush but no, every weekend is an opportunity and with us being a year-round destination we must make hay, as it were. We are shortly moving into a higher level of conference-related events by having an in house professional conference organiser (PCO) responsible for selling our area for mainly corporate and professional meetings and conferences. This initiative we believe, will add to those gap-filling opportunities which, for the hospitality industry, is an important bread and butter issue - especially when we can be a very seasonal place to visit. So everybody, before the mainly Gauteng and KZN folk are welcomed from the end of November, there are some jolly things to do this weekend. Till then we have event promoters to meet in Durbs - enjoy our eventing paradise.

>>news1@feveronline.co.za THE KwaNzimakwe African Gospel Church held a career expo on Saturday. The expo was held under a theme called ‘Christianity and education are hands in gloves.’ Various professionals were in attendance to motivate the youth and give them a clear picture on the different career choices. Unisa and CAO assisted the youth on subject choices when studying at tertiary level. Church district organisers Caleb and Thandi Phehlukwayo said the event was successful and believe they enjoyed the various activities that took part throughout the day. “We encourage church members and pastors of other churches to engage in youth development. Preaching the gospel, education and social growth goes hand in hand,” said Phehlukwayo. Attorney Thandi Sima encouraged the youth to pursue a career in law. She said female lawyers and attorneys are scarce. “Females should study hard and stand their ground in law firms,” said Thandi.

Move over, Maslow STEPH MCLENNAN

A

STEPH MCLENNAN fevercolumns@gmail.com

BOUT a million years ago, some guynamedMaslow, whohadway too much time on his hands, put togetheratriangularhierarchyofneeds, detailing what he thought were the most essential things for people to be in possession of. Ever since, high school and university students around the world have been falling asleep in lessons and lectures while the teacher, as bored as his or her subjects, drones on about this hierarchy. The soporific effect of Maslow has even been felt in examinations, where students have failed courses due to falling asleep in papers which included questions about Maslow and his blasted hierarchy.

So,tosumupthishierarchysoquickly that you won't have time to fall asleep, Maslow states that the first level of needs pertains to physiological matters. Food. Air. Excretion. Sleep. In other words, the basic elements required to not be dead. His second level of needs relates to securityneeds:ajob, healthandproperty. The third deals with love and belonging. By rights, Maslow should get a mention in the credits of every gooey chick flick ever made. On level four, getting to the stuff that Maslow thinks only the elite reach, sits things like self confidence and earning the respect of others. On the fifth level is the lofty notion ofself-actualisation,awordnotspoken

TO the fellow Hindus who celebrated Diwali with bangs, shame on you! Diwali is a Festival of Lighta, not bangs. Light up your hearts and feel the compassion for the scared animals. So much money wasted and so much distress for just a few hours of so-called entertainment. I’m sure God won’t be pleased to see the suffering you have caused to the poor animals. Suria Naidoo

outside the halls of academia since 1850. This encompasses traits like morality, creativity, and the ability to be non-judgmental. Here are the problems I have with Maslow:hisideasareponcyandoutdated, and have no resonance with the 21st century. Most of all, I take exception to Maslow's belief that one cannot reach level two until you have level one wrapped up, and so on. To my non-academic brain, this implies that no homeless person can be creative; that no unemployed person can have moral scruples, and that insomniacs can never fall in love. Also, as a person who relies upon my creativity (level five) for my bread and butter (level one), I assure you that my

What do all these violent events have in common? Traumatised people. While friends and family and sometimes communities all rally to help the victims, they, and even their nearest and dearest, often need professional counselling. For the lucky few who have good medical aids, this is usually available for a short period after the event. daily battle down the road from “victim” to “survivor”? bodily functions are all in order. In 21st century South Africa, in which each economic recession is worse than the last; each president more corrupt than his predecessor and where everything is uncertain, does one ever permanently move past level one? Or does one cling to the attributes of levels two to five in order to sustain level one? Here's how, in my opinion, a 21st century list of needs looks. There are no levels, because all are as imperative to truly living as the next: oxygen (as pollution-free as possible); a roof over our head (brick and mortar for the fortunate such as myself); friends (to provide a roof when one's own is taken away by the bank); a passion and a purpose (without this there is little point to getting out of bed), self-confidence (or at least the ability to fake it, because nobody likes or employs a wallflower), and laughter (because without this, breathing is futile).

The support group meetings are loosely structured, and are facilitated by Julia Christiansen, who has a wealth of experience in the field of Trauma Counselling. Christiansen says the healing process continues throughout life, and for the survivor, re-integration can be a lengthy and intense process, and each individual must determine the time it takes. The only requirement to join the group is that you commit to a confidentiality agreement with the other members of the group. IfyourequiremoreinformationgiveJulia(083 4581806) or Elaine ( 0823377702 ) a ring. The group meets twice a month, on a Wednesday, at 16h00, in the Southport Library’s activity hall. E.I Whitwam

Religious twaddle and evil gods I SEE our erudite Peter Chiolé, being so full of himself, quotes all sorts of twaddle in the hope that people will believe the rubbish he is sprouting (Science against God? Fever, 24 October). My dear man with the verbal diarrhoea, it seems that you were unable to see that I was wanting to know why your God cannot heal a simple amputee or Aids. I remind you that the Bible was cobbled together at the conference of Nicea by Constantine and all the religions

of the day because the Roman empire was failing and they needed money. Virtually all important events such as Christ, virgin birth, etc, arealltakenfromEgyptianhistory. Sad to say, but your religion condoned the most evil acts against Jews, Muslims and Aboriginals, not to mention the Inquisition, simply because it did not agree with your famed bible. A sick discredited god and his evil religion. You can keep it, pal. Charles Butcher, Shelly Beach

True faith needs no crutch

A RESPONSE to both Mr. Chiolé and Mr. Butcher’s posts, in which I take a neutral position. Mr. Butcher you claim that the Judaic-God of the Abrahamic faith, is impotent when it comes to healing a severed limb. Firstly, the conflation of invertebrates in such an argument serves as an example of our “inferior” genetic make up, lacking the ability to regrow a limb. This is simply how weweremade.Didthe“creator”not create us like this for a reason? Questioning this, is questioning our own fabric and design. The people at Boeing create planes but as the pilot, will you question the designers’ integrity because the plane lackstheabilitytosubmergeandoperate like a submarine? Same logic in this regard. Jesus said: “A little faith can move mountains.” Our advancement in science is an example of man moving mountains, and in time humanity will probably pave the way for cellular regeneration in our genome. Jesus also states “do not test the Lord your God”. This argument, however, has with it a certain element of testing

his ability (against his own creation) and therefore becomes irrelevant respectively. Chiolé, would humanity have “found God” earlier had middle-age Catholism not regulated, and limited science? Were you around 13.5 billion years ago to confirm the current age of existence? “A contradiction to your faith, as it is said to be much younger.” Did you take a journey to the Earth’s centre to confirm it has a solid core? Have you studied evidence to observe how amino-acids are intrinsically coded into cells? I admire your confidence in your certainty, but your faith in science is used to defend your faith in God. And true faith does not need a crutch of science, because true faith is knowing and certainty. One day man will understand his place in this great macro-spectacle, a mansion with many rooms. Lest the greatness of architecture blinds him, he becomes consumed by the viral psychological disorder called ignorance. Charlie Keiser Shelly Beach

Evolution, an unprovable theory THE letter from SVS refers. Here are some evolution facts which SVS cannot disprove: • Evolution (more precisely macro-evolution) is still a theory. • Scientific inquests rely on providing peer-reviewed empirical evidence for the scientific facts that a particular scientist has established to be fact. There are even greater miracles IN The Fever of 17 October Charles Butcher says no Aids patient has been healedbyGod.Whereisthatinformation from? Google reports on God healing AIDS as does CBN TV and 700 Club. Heidi Baker, Reinhard Bonnke, Joseph Prince ministries, besides others, have numerous healing testimonies. A local lady several years ago testified of her healing from Aids, as was someone in our church. Andrew Wommack has amazing healing DVD’s. Sid Roth interviews testify of God mightily working through people. Jesus healed all, Acts 10:38. Luke 17:12 - 19 records one of the ten lepers healed returned, glorifying God and thanking Jesus. True religion meant to make men free TO Esq SVS’s negative contribution on religion (Fever, 24 October) please consider Dr Sir Muhammad Iqbal’s favourable evaluation of religion. Please mark the contrast. Allama Iqbal said: “Humanity needs three things today – a spiritual interpretation of the universe, spiritual emancipation of the individual and basic principles of a universal import directing the evolution of human society on a spiritual basis. Modern Europe has, no doubt, built idealistic systems on these lines; but experience has

shown that truth revealed through pure reason is incapable of bringing the fire of living conviction which personal revelation alonecanbring.Thisisthereasonwhypure thought has so little influenced men while religion has always elevated individuals and transformed societies. Advantages of having a carport >> Carport can be used as a play area

CARPORT provides shelter for your vehicle. People and pets aren't the only things that need shelter from the elements. Besides a home, a car is usuallyconsideredtobeoneofthemoreimportant investments you make. A carport is a shelter constructed from wood, metals or other materials and it tends to take the place of a garage. Here are 10 advantages to using a carport. 1: Weather safety A carport can keep your car far away from the elements, whether harmful summer rays, winter snow, sleet or rain. A carport usually has a roof and sometimes sides. However, it is not usually enclosed. 2: Helpfulness for singles A carport can be helpful for people who live alone. Carports usually sit close to the home. Therefore, pulling up and into a carport and parking closer to the front door could be safer than parking in the street. 3: Protection Speaking of safety, housing a car under the carport may also shield it from vandalism or other random attacks. Burglars or perpetrators may be less inclined to enter a carport close to the home. 4: Additional space You can use carports as outdoor porches if you need extra space. 5: Other vehicle storage You can also use a carport to shelter

boats, trailers, motorcycles and other methods of transportation if you don't have room in your garage. 6: Shade You may use a carport as a play area for children or shaded areas for adults. 7: Organisation If you install a carport with walls, it may also serve as an extra storage unit for tools, boxes and other items. 8: Convenience Because most carports are open areas, they do not have doors. Ultimately, the lack

of door can be more convenient when you come home with grocery bags or other items you need to carry inside. A carport can also save on energy and electricity. 9: Added home value If your home does not have a garage and you decide to sell it, buyers might consider it a disadvantage. At least with a carport, prospective home hunters will see they can park their car, motorcycle or boat on the grounds rather than the street. 10: No more storage units A carport could save from having to rent a storage unit. Most of the time, you can construct a carport to resemble or at least blend with the architecture of your home, be it bricks, siding or wood. Before you decide to purchase a pre-fabricated carport, construct a carport on your own or even call in a professional, check with your municipality or homeowners association for zoning ordinances or for what is allowed in the neighborhood. Some communities require permits and proof of plans. — Supplied.

Water-saving tips TURN off the tap while brushing teeth, shaving or soaping hands. 1. Take shorter showers and use less water if you bath. 2. Avoid buying bottled water. 3. Sweep outside areas instead of hosing with water. 4. Use eco-friendly soap and cleaning products. 5. Fix leaks at home and report public water leaks to the municipality. 6. Always use a plugged-sink or bowl instead of a running tap. 7. Insulate hot water pipes to reduce time waiting for water to heat up. 8. Install aerators and flow-reducing valves on your taps. 9. Install water saving devices on taps, toilets, showers and sprinklers. 10. Install a water meter and monitor your use. 11. Install an instant water heater at your taps for immediate hot water. Methods to check your home is leak-free 1. Use your water meter to check for hidden water leaks. Read the water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water has been used. If the water meter doesn’t read exactly the same, then there is a leak. 2. To check for toilet tank leaks, add food colouring to the tank. If the toilet leaks, the toilet bowl will have changed colour

within 30 minutes. 3. Repair dripping taps by replacing the washer. If a tap is dripping at a rate of one drop per second, you could be wasting up to 10 220 litres per year. 4. If your toilet handle constantly stays in a downward position this means that water is constantly running. Replace or fix the handle to avoid wasted water. 5. Insulate your water pipes. If you do, you’ll get hot water faster, avoid wasting water while it is heating, and also saving money on electricity. Plants and garden 1. Learn about water-wise gardening. 2. Water plants at the coolest part of the day. 3. Group plants together that have the same water requirements. 4. Water plants with the water you used in the kitchen to rinse fruit and vgetables. 5. Choose local indigenous water-wise plants for your home and garden. 6. Adjust sprinklers to water plants and not the pavement. 7. Cover your pool so the water doesn’t evaporate. 8. Check your pool for leaks. 9. Put self-closing spray nozzles on hosepipes. 10. Use natural and organic garden products. - www.fortheloveofwater.co.za

Checklist for choosing student accommodation

FEVER There is only enough on-campus accommodation for one out of every five tertiary students.

>> There are no set standards yet for this type of accommodation

W

ITH matric exams now under way, the next major step for many pupils will be leaving home to attend college or university – and finding somewhere to live while they complete their studies. “And for the majority, this will probably not be a room on campus in an official residence, as SA tertiary institutions are woefully short of accommodation, says Andrew Schaefer, MD of leading national property management company Trafalgar. The latest available statistics from the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHT) show there is only enough on-campus accommodation for one out of

looking at should also have good security measures and procedures in place to ensure their personal safety and protect their possessions. Many students return home late at night which makes this even more important. • Building management. There is no doubt that student accommodation works best in blocks of flats or houses that have been built or specifically converted to meet student needs - and where there is strong property management enhanced by the presence of an experienced on-site caretaker or “house mother” to constantly address maintenance, safety and counselling issues. Good landlords who target student tenants will also be familiar with 10month leases and schedule major building maintenance for the “empty” months of December and January. Many will also provide low-cost/ free storage for students’ belongings during these months. • Single or shared rooms? Some students like sharing dormitory-style rooms and bathrooms with their fellow students, otherslikesharingaflatorahouseinwhich they have their own room, and yet others prefer to have a space that is entirely their own, even if it’s tiny. Their choice may also be influenced by cost, with shared accommodation generally being cheaper – and providing company. But whatever they

choose, they should make sure that there isaquietplaceintheirhouseorblockwhere they can go to study. • What furniture is provided? Ideally, student rooms should be semi-furnished, with beds, desks, built-in cupboards and lockers for valuables all provided, and students only having to bring their own linen, kitchen utensils and perhaps a small fridge. In a shared house or apartment, the study area, dining area and lounge should also be furnished, and there should be a workingstoveandfridgeinthekitchen.Onsite laundry facilities are also most useful and a fast Internet connection is essential these days, preferably Wi-Fi. • Boarding or self-catering? Students are notoriously bad at feeding themselves because they find meal preparation timeconsuming or because they just forget to budget for food, and many studies have linked poor academic performance to poor nutrition. So many parents prefer communes and student apartment blocks where the rent includes at least one good meal a day prepared by trained staff. But even if they choose this semi-boarding option instead of self-catering, students should always check the state of the kitchen and the equipment provided before deciding to rent.

Neighbour objections to renovations >> Some are even willing to pay huge sums of money in taking their objections to court.

BSTRUCTION of views when people are renovating is an ongoing issue and is always problematic when it comes to the interpretations of building regulations. This is according to Lanice Steward, managing director of Knight Frank Residential SA, who says many neighbours would object to renovations on the adjacent property if the new building was to detract from their views, the property value and privacy. Some are even willing to pay huge sums of money in taking their objections to court to prevent the renovations or building work taking place. In a case recently covered in a Smith Tabata Buchanan Boyes property law update, Turnbull-Jackson v Hibiscus Coast Municipality and Others. Turnbull-Jackson objected to construction work that had begun on

amenable and the owners would not have had their project delayed for years. “One should be aware that there have been many changes to zoning regulations and that if the neighbouring owners decide to build onto their home or upwards, that the plans could be approved based on densification principles and that objecting to these, if not completely founded, might be wasting valuable time and resources,” says Steward. She says if buying a property, also be aware of what could happen next door, and think about whether you would be able to accept what could be built. Even if there is a height or building restriction in the title deeds, the owners of the property could get that lifted, meaning it does not give unlimited protection. -Property24

Chefs fight hunger

>> ‘By the time I was 12 I was set on going into the food industry’ Surname: Hastings

First names: Gary Ivan Date of birth: 03-02-1960 Nationality: South African

G

ROWING up in a continental home whereby we had to dress up for all meals and make each mealtime an occasion with properly laid tables with candlesetc, mostdefinitely, setmeonthe path for my lifetime passion for food. FromaveryearlyageIwasalreadyexperimenting and assisting in our home kitchen with continental dishes prepared by mymother, whobroughtbackrecipesand ideas from her travels in the fashion industry, whereby she frequently attended all the major fashion fares in London, Italy, France, New York, Argentina and Australia. By the time I was 12 I already had my mind set on going into the food industry and after the death of my father I started work during school holidays at the Carevelle Restaurant in Johannesburg. The restaurant was situated in the stock exchange building and catered for up market lunches and functions. My first duties in the kitchen were peeling potatoes and washing pots and pans. I still maintain this is the best way to begin one’s career, as it forms a solid base and understanding of all aspects of the kitchen. In 1976 I joined the Caravelle full time, however after three months I was approached by the owner of the Café Royal restaurant in downtown Johannesburg to join his team as a trainee chef. After a year and a half at the Café Royal, I applied for and joined in September 1977 the in house chefs programme with Holiday Inns. In July 1978 I was called up for compulsory military duties and served with the defence force until July 1980. After completing my military training I traveled around Europe visiting most of theprincipalcountries, andthenreturned to Millpark Holiday Inn to continue my training. In April 1982 I was promoted to chef de partie and transferred to Welcome Holiday Inn for the opening of the hotel. In January 1984 I joined Southern Sun as a chef de partie for the opening of the Sandton Sun, whereby I started in

the fine-dinning Italian Villa restaurant andthereaftermovedtothemainkitchen banqueting production section, although the time I worked at this unit was short I had the opportunity to work closely with world renowned chef doctor, Bill Gallagher as well as chef Jos Thys and the experience I gained from these gentlemen was priceless. From there I joined the Mount Nelson Hotel team in Cape Town. After working at there for 18 months I joined Chef Johan Zsabo and his team as a chef departie at the Elizabeth Sun. In August 1989 I felt I was ready and achieved my goal of being an executive chef before I was 30. I joined the Karos Widerness Hotel as their executive chef and remained with them until March of 1993. The unit was extremely busy year round and catered for large conferences and business incentives. In May 1993, feeling I needed a change from hotels in general, I accepted the post as the executive chef of the Green Dolphin restaurant in Cape Town. Just after the birth of my son Dramond, I was approached by the Berjaya Hotel Group to take over one of their units in the Seychelles, which I accepted and left the Green Dolphin in 1994 after being with there for only one year. In July 1995 I left for the Seychelles and the hotel had three outlets as well as large banqueting facilities, with the most principal function been the swimsuit portion of the Miss World Pageant.

When the GM of the Mahe beach left to join another hotel group on the island he askedmetogowithhim.Ijoinedtheplantation Club Resort and Casino in the Seychelles in March 1997 as the executive sous chef. I went on to become the head chef and then the back-of-house operations manager responsible for daily running of the unit, overseas and local purchases, future projects and assisting with theoperationsofthehotel’sholdingcompany. In March 2003 I and long-standing partner Nonna, started our own company,AcropolisPTYSeychelles.Thepurpose of the company was to offer training to smaller establishments in the Seychelles as well as consulting for the larger hotels. In December 2004 we returned to South Africa, and I joined a consultancy as food and beverage projects chef. In February 2005 I went to Swaziland whereby I assisted the complex executive the late Chef David Kay with his daily operationsinallthreeunits.FromApril2005 until April 2006 I assisted the executive sous chef at the Palace Hotel with all aspects of the day-to-day operations according to the standards set out by Chef Smalberger. I also took ownership of the principal functions for the Nedbank Golf Challenge - the Pro Am Dinner, the Valley of the Waves and Boma functions, again under the guidance of the group executive chefs. In May 2006 I joined the Wild Coast Sun as its executive chef. My goals here are to continue upgrading the product offered to our guests and bring the food concepts more in line with current international trends. With this all said and done its not just all about hard work and long hours, when I can I enjoy diving, playing guitar ,writing music, short stories, inspirational prose and spending quality time with my family.

withdraw misleading claims. A consumer, who has asked not to benamed,boughtaR9 000SonyXperia Z1 smartphone, but had to turn as a last resort to the ASA after the “waterproof” cellphone stopped working a day after she used it in water. And the consumer told me she had tried endlessly to resolve the complaint dealing with Sony Mobile’s local agency and via its call centre that rang to India, where staff apparently had been unable to direct her to the company’s local repair centre. “Her cellular service provider refused to repair the phone, insisting that it is merely ‘water resistant’, and not ‘waterproof’ as claimed,” the ASA said in its ruling. According to the ASA the consumer was adamant that the phone’s ports had been properly shut before it was used in water and that she would not have risked deliberately damaging the device. She also mentioned several similar complaints she had seen on an online forum. Sony Mobile responded, saying that the phone was a “waterproof device” specified by an international standard and that it was “not susceptible to water ingress up to a depth of 1,5 metres for up to 30 minutes”, provided ports were all securely closed. “Thecellularserviceprovider’sassertions that the device is only waterresistant are therefore incorrect … this seems like a product warranty/ service/repair query rather than an advertising matter. There seems to be a dispute between the service department and the customer about the

source of the water damage,” Sony said. However, the ASA found in the advertised capabilities of the device, caveats to the claim that the phone was “smart, sleek and waterproof”, were “more aligned with what is commonly understood to be water resistant”. TheASAsaidtheconsumer’sargument appeared to “hold water” and it was “loath” to accept the claim of being “waterproof”. It ruled that the word “waterproof” be withdrawn from all advertising of the phone and that it not be used again in a manner thatsuggestsanythingotherthanwater-resistant capabilities. Sony Mobile said last week that it had amended its adverts for the phone to water resistant and that it had appealed the ruling, which was “made on the basis of a warranty claim” and that it was “engaging with ASA in order to clarify the situation”. “In the complainant’s specific case, their product was defective, and has since been replaced under Sony Mobile’s standard warranty against defects. Unfortunately, in this case, a service provider in the service chain did not follow the correct procedure for evaluating this device, which led to a poor customer experience,” Sony Mobile said. I found it sad that the consumer had to escalate the case to the ASA in order to obtain redress for a phone thatwasdefectivefromtheoutset, but this case shows it certainly pays to persevere. In another case, a consumer, Nico duPlessis, lodgedacomplaintagainst

a misleading Cartrack Car Recovery television advert, which he alleged was “confusing and untrue” as it vocally promised the company would give consumers R150 000 in cases where a vehicle was not recovered after theft. But then the payoff line appeared on the screen with the disclaimer: “Your car back or up to R150 000 guaranteed. Ts and Cs apply.” Cartrack responded saying the messagerelatingtotheR150 000was conveyed in a “clear, impactful and engaging manner” and 10% of the commercial time was “purposely used to deliver this message effectively, ensuring that there would be absolute clarity”. However, the ASA disagreed sayingit“takesissuewiththefactthatthe vocal and the written messages in the commercial are confusing”. “Advertisements should not containanystatementorvisualpresentation which, directly or by implication, omission, ambiguity, inaccuracy, exaggeratedclaimorotherwise, islikely to mislead the consumer,” the ASA said. The ASA found the advert ambiguous and likely to mislead as it displayed contradicting messages with a disclaimer that was not “sufficient or prominent enough to negate the initial, unqualified promise of R150 000 for any vehicle not recovered”. The ASA ordered that the advert be immediatelywithdrawninitspresentform. To lodge a complaint with the ASA, visit www.asasa.org.za

Banting for dogs THE true judge on whether a diet is ideal for both dogs and humans is based on whether they can provide the correct pH balances, with a leaning towards alkalinity. Thus, when looking at popular human diets, this key formula is always fulfilled. The Banting Diet, promoted by Professor Tim Noakes, fulfils these requirements. Often his proposed diet is misunderstood. He is actually advocating a high-fat diet with low refined carbohydrates, rather than a high meat protein diet. Looking thoroughly into his diet and recipes, the contribution of his veggies (predominantly alkaline) supersedes and balances the acidity from the meat content. Remember, fat mostly has a neutral impact on pH. Recently, astudyconductedbyanimalscienceresearchers in California now demonstrates feeding dogsfresh, healthy, wholefooddietsinsteadofhighly processed kibble and cans results in improved health measures. When preparing pets’ diets the same considerations should be applied as to preparing human nutritionalfoods.Adogs’BantingDietwouldbeanexceptional dietary plan suitable for the whole family. Consideringcommercialpetfoodsinpelletorkibble form, it is quite clear why such diets cannot perform. The main ingredients are refined carbs — brewers rice, wheat and corn gluten, potato meal, soya meal and animal meals. Actually, such refined carbs areratedas“extremelyacidic”andtheircontribution overrides any alkaline ingredients coming from this diet. The same arguments follow for diets containing copiousamountsofmeat(raworcooked).Inthelast few years, there has been a trend to feed our companion animals a high raw-meat diet. Meat too is classified as an “extremely” acidic. Acidosis leads to inflamed cells; reduced immunity and an array of health ailments like skin disorders, arthritis and kidney stones. The recent landmark veterinary studies from West Hollywood, California, support what human nutritionists have been advising for decades — “stay clear of heavily processed foods and eat wholesome, balanced meals prepared fresh from the highestquality ingredients available; are lightly cooked and have no preservatives”. Beach festival date announced PRECIOUS GUMEDE HIBISCUS Coast municipality in partnershipwithCyassoundHoldingshas announced the dates for this years Summer Beach festival. Deputy mayor Johannes de Wet highlighted a few aspects planned for this years festival. “Theserviceproviderhasmadean application to the SAPS for tighter security in order to manage safety of the residents and patrons on the beach during the festival,”

said de Wet. “This is in line with accommodating the huge influx of vehicles and visitors who will be visiting the St Michaels Beach and extend their visit to our newly crowned and consistent winners of Blue Flag beaches,” he added. Reports from last year left the public confused whether there will be a beach festival this year, after the municipality received reports from the St. Micheals residents saying the beach was left filthy an unpleasantly smelly dump, with broken beer bot-

tles all over. “The municipality is of the view that this year’s Hibiscus Coast Summer Beach festival is set to raise the barin2014whenitwillbestrategically staged on 30 and 31 December 2014, spilling over onto 1 January 2015 to bring flare and excitement in order attract as many visitors and tourists as possible. TheCouncilhasnonethelessnoted the concerns raised by residents on the iBeach Xplosion of last year, and will be taking precautions to mini-

mize such complaints, including updating relevant stakeholders of the staging of this particular event,” said De-Wet HCM has promised visitors and patrons a comfortable, safe event for all visiting the South Coast. Deputy mayor said the three-day program will kickstart with a thrilling variety of sports, fun games, and good music for all ages and lots of entertainment for the visitors. On the 31st December, the event will host a paying New Year’s Eve Party, providing a

more structured, controlled and safe environment for patrons who will be visiting St Michaels Beach. On the First of January New Year’s Day, artists from all over KwaZulu- Natal and nationally will be doing live performances; setting up a free- of- charge, laid back beach picnic atmosphere for patrons to continue to enjoy their NewYearcelebrationsfrom13h00up to midnight.” More than 5 000 patrons are expected to be on the beachfront of St Michael’s to enjoy this festival.

Notice Notice of submission of Application for Rectification of Unlawful Commencement or Continuation of Listed Activities in terms of provisions of S24G of NEMA (Act 107 of 1998 as amended) to the Department of Environmental Affairs for the Emergency reconstruction of the collapsed railway embankment, Amanzimtoti River, KwaZulu-Natal. A Water Use License Applications (WULA) in terms of the National Water Act, 1998 (Act No. 36 of 1998) may also be required. All required documentation will be submitted to the Department of Water and Sanitation if deemed necessary. A section of a railway embankment located along the aManzimtoti River mouth estuary (near the Amanzimtoti Railway Station) was being undermined due to increased estuarine flow and wave action. The heavy rainfall and subsequent increased water volumes (flooding) experienced at the river mouth during December 2012 resulted in the complete failure of the embankment. Consequently the south-bound railway track collapsed, causing three locomotives to enter the river at the foot of the embankment. The decision to commence with the emergency reconstruction of the embankment was based on the risk to the general public and estuarine environment associated with the potential collapse of the remaining railway line, especially with the current increased rainfall. The decision to commence with the emergency construction activities was based on the risk to the general public and estuarine environment associated with the potential collapse of the remaining railway line, especially with the current increased rainfall. The activity has triggered a section 24G application in terms of the unlawful commencement of listed activities:Government Notice, Listing Notice 1, GNR 544: No.11, 16, 17 and 18. Young wins number one plate for 2014 >> This was the Paddock prodigy's fifth overall victory.

W

ADE Young (18) rounded the 2014 Liquorland National Enduro Championship off with yet another overall win and class victory when he won the Liquorland Matatiele WFO National Enduro this past weekend. This was the Paddock prodigy's fifth overall victory and sixth E1 Class Championship win this season resulting in him retaining the Number One plate for the second consecutive year while he has also claimed the E1 (200cc) Championship again. Young's team mate, Travis Teasdale, took the early lead in the race after winning thefirstExtremeStage. Atightbattlecontinued at the front between the two Brother KTM scholars and the defending E2 champion, Altus de Wet (CargoTac Husqvarna Factory Racing). De Wet went into the race as the overall runner-up behind Young and leading the E2 standings while Teasdale, who claimedhisfirstoverallpodiumresult at the Matatiele event last year, was aiming to finish the season on the podium. Behind them only seconds separated Proudly Bidvest Yamaha teammates, Brett Swanepoel (E1) and Kenny Gilbert (E2) at most stages. Like De Wet, Swanepoel would also leave for the ISDE the day after the Matatiele race and a tumble over the handle bars (De Wet also experienced one of those!) and lost time did not form part of his plan. Louwrens Mahoney, Young's team-mate and the only other overall and E2 Class win-

ner this year, rounded off the E2 podium and finished seventh overall with Paddock scholar, Kyle Flanagan (TLB Plant Hire / Alfie Cox Racing KTM) fourth in E2 (11th overall) and Nick Wade (Team Liquorland Yamaha Racing)fifth.Theseasonlongbattlein theSeniorClassreachedboilingpoint at Matatiele with the multiple defending champion, William Gillitt (Team Liquorland Yamaha Racing) leading the suspension guru, Hilton Hayward

consecutive years (he has won this class several times before 2010, but the class did not have national championship status) Cox will now be crowned as the new champion. The battle for the final overall Master Class podium position for 2014 was betweenKirkandGarthProst(CargoTac Husqvarna Factory Racing) and the way the cookie crumbled, it was Kirk who claimed the third podium spot for the year. Prost finished fifth at Matatiele, but a 10th place in class at the season opener, resulted in him having to settle for the fourth place overall for the season despite finishing on the podium four times during the season. Carl Rohrbeck (KTM) was sixth at Matatiele and was followed by Dino Santoro (Beta); Gary Franks (Husqvarna) and Eric Alcaraz (KTM). The new High School Class Championship had the nerves all tangled up at the final race. Three victories for Eduan Bester (NUTS Racing / Century Civils KTM) resulted in him leading Chayse Orsmond (TLB Plant Hire / Alfie Cox Racing KTM), who has also won twice this season and finished on the podium three more times, by a mere two points. Orsmond won the battle with a class victory at Matatiele, but Bester (he finished second) ended up winning the war by claiming the first High School Class Championship title. The two youngsters finished the season with the same amount of points AND the same amount of wins, but Bester scored more second places than Orsmond.

“A TIGHT BATTLE CONTINUED AT THE FRONT BETWEEN THE TWO BROTHER KTM SCHOLARS AND THE DEFENDING E2 CHAMPION, ALTUS DE WET (CARGO-TAC HUSQVARNA FACTORY RACING). Gillitt's teammate, Steven Landman, finished fourth with Laurence Truter (KTM) fifth;PeterJung(KTM)sixthandChris Lindhorst (KTM) seventh after a testing event. The veteran enduro and off-road competitor and multiple former champion, Alfie Cox (KTM) can now add the Master Class Championship title to his long list of achievements. Cox has won the Master Class at all six rounds of the 2014 series after not competing in the national enduro series for many years. Defending champion, Denzil Torlage (Proudly Bidvest Yamaha) finished as the runner-up after each race this year and after winning the Master Class Championship title for a record of five

A McLaren 650S was reportedly stolen during a hijacking in Warden near the KwaZulu-Natal and Free State border. Investigations task team was assigned to the case. “No further information can be disclosed at this stage due to the highly sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation,” Neilson said. Daytona Motor Group CEO Justin Divaris said the car was bound for its showroom in Sandton. “The vehicle had come in through the port and was in a container. It is one of our demonstrator models we used for test drives and for the press, and was not specifically on order for a customer, thank goodness.”

Schumacher was with his 14-year-old son in the French Alps when he fell, hitting the side of his head on a rock and cracking his helmet. “Life after a head injury is punctuated by stages. We hope, but we have to give him time,” said Payen last Thursday. Hepredictedaconvalescenceofonetothreeyears. Earlier French F1 commentator Jean-Louis Moncet repeated a report that Schumacher was “waking up very slowly” from the induced coma controlling his serious brain injuries. Moncet said: “I saw his son and he told me Schumi was waking up very slowly, very slowly.”

Payen commented: “It is to see how he progresses and then tell his wife and his children what changes I have observed. He is in very favourable conditions. In September 2014 Schumacher left a rehabilitation clinic in Switzerland and returned home to his estate on the edge of Lake Geneva. — Wheels24.

According to the guild, the cars will be judged on the following criteria: aesthetics, build quality, ergonomics, fuel consumption, environmental friendliness, safety features and value for money. Judges will have access to independent performance test data, comparative pricing and specifications, as well as comparative parts prices. A release from the guild says: “While all are deemed to represent outstanding automotiveengineering, therecanbeonly one winner and that model will epitomise all-round automotive excellence — the sole criteria for the Car of the Year.” — Wheels24. Audi A3 Sedan 1.4T SE S Tronic.

Divaris said that he believed that the theft had been a mistake. “I firmly believe that whoever stole the truck had no idea what they had taken. There is obviously no market for a car like that in South Africa and I think they were after other electronic goods.”He also denied that the Durban business mogul had bought the car, and said they looked forward to getting their car back. — Jeff Wicks.

A man, who allegedly stole Schumacher’s medical records and who was allegedly attempting to sell them to different media for $67 000 (about R7 350 000), worked as an executive at a Swiss helicopter air rescue company, which organised the German sportsman’s transport from a French hospital to Switzerland in June. The man, arrested and interrogated by police, had denied any wrongdoing. He was being detained in a Zurich police holding cell, but was found hanged when officers took him breakfast before a scheduled hearing before a judge.

It is understood that the sports car arrived at the Durban Harbour on Monday and once cleared through customs had been placed in an unmarked container bound for Johannesburg. Law enforcement reports that the the heavy goods truck carrying the McLaren was hijacked in Warden near the KZN-Free State border. The driver had been thrown out by criminals at Hartebeespoort although was unharmed in the robbery. Police reports that the car had been ordered for a Durban business tycoon, who had bought the performance vehicle through his company. The businessman denied this and insisted his company had not purchased the sports car. Imperial Logistics marketing executive Michelle Neilson confirmed that a truck was hijacked on the N3 between Warden and Villiers with a container containing laptops and the McLaren 650 S.
