>> KZN to march for rights of rape victims

O

N Friday, 1 August at the start of Women’s Month, thousands of volunteers will participate in the eighth annual Silent Protest. The protest, organised for the first time in Durban by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), in association with St Michael’s Lutheran Church, aims to highlight rape survivors’ right to Post Exposure Prophylaxis (Pep) in order to prevent HIV sero-conversion. The demand for greater access to PEP is in line with AHF’s 20x20 Campaign. Central to the protest is the public act of showing solidarity with rape survivors who are often silenced by sexual violence. The Silent Protest will also take place in Grahamstown and Johannesburg. To join the Durban march, community members must meet at St Michael Lutheran Church, 43 Milne Street in the Durban CBD at 6am. The event is anticipated to end at 5pm.

For the past eight years, activists have staged the Silent Protest in order to draw public attention to rape, educate the public about their right to Pep after rape and to demand better services for survivors. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Government crime statistics reveal that 66 000 sexual assaults were reported in South Africa last year. Of these, only 6.5% are successfully prosecuted and less than half of one percent of perpetrators will serve any jail time. Studies agree that the majority of rape victims never report the crime to the police and there are many statistics that focus on the

ratio of reporting to non-reporting of rape survivors — the most conservative estimate comes from Rape Crisis (one in four) and the most shocking comes from the SAPS (one in 25). These statistics translate to anywherefrom260000toover1.5 million rapes annually. The statistics demonstrate the cultureofimpunityinSouthAfrica, where rape is commonplace

THE Reach For A Dream Foundation’s 2014 “Reach For Your Slippers” campaign returns to the calendar and calls on citizens to donate their “pocket change” to help support children who are battling lifethreatening illnesses. By making this worthy cause part of your budget, you help little ones in need and you win the right to wear your fluffy pantoffles to work on Friday, 1 August. In a few short years (it started in 2011), this wacky footwear fundraising day has gone from a one-city crusade to a nationwide movement, and each year sees office workers and school children from across the country opt for comfy fuzzy flats instead of shoes. If you’re confused about how to leave your slops or stilettos in the closet and shuffle through the work place or school in your pseudo-shoes could help a child diagnosed with a serious disease, read on. How the 2014 ‘Reach For Your Slippers’ campaign works • Go to Wimpy, Makro or Hirsch’s branch. • Buy a slipper sticker for R10each (at Wimpy you also get a free cup of coffee) • Wear your sticker and your slippers to work or school in a show of support and solidarity on Friday, 1 August. • Become a slippered superhero. The funds and awareness raised through this cause helps the non-profit organisation put a smile on the face of child, or more specifically, as the South African branch of the globally acclaimed Make-A-Wish Foundation, The Reach For A Dream Foundation is devoted to the same purpose made famous by its American counterpart — “fulfilling the dreams of children of any race, colour and creed between the ages of three and 18 faced with a life-threatening illness”. Since 1988 the foundation has been assisting toddlers through to teens to combat the gravity of a serious disease by making dreams – from surprise birthday parties, to laptops, to shopping sprees – come true. These fantasies temporarily allow children to return to their childhood and leave the pain, stress and anxiety related to their poor health behind. After the inaugural drive raised R175,000 in KwaZulu-Natal in 2011, the team was so inspired by the great response that they expanded the fundraiser nationwide. In 2012, the movement made over R1.3 million and in 2013 R2.3 million was raised. This year, the charity organisation hopes to grow these figures, and each of the seven Reach For A Dream offices across the country will spearhead the initiative and encourage members of their province to roll out of bed and remove the mu-mu (nightgowns), but leave the comfy footwear in place. - cptmagazine
